Happy Birthday, Times Five! Points of Interest
Boy, do I have egg on MY face! Last month, in our August issue, I forgot to say “Happy Birthday” to my son, Adam, who turned 27 on August 22, my granddaughter, McKenna, who turned 6 on August 23, and my nephew, Dylan who turned 16 on August 10. My only saving grace? Last month’s column was on “living in the now.” Hmmm… maybe I did too good of a job at that? Regardless, I wish a happy birthday to Adam, McKenna, and Dylan! So very sorry about that. It doesn’t seem possible that Adam is 27. Where has the time gone? He is now an adult—he recently bought his first home, has a truck payment, and has been with his girlfriend, Sam, for almost 10 years now. Wow. McKenna’s birthday is the day after Adam’s. My daughter, Carissa, required a planned C-section for McKenna, and she really wanted them to “share” a birthday. Problem was, the doctor didn’t do C-sections on Mondays. So, instead of shared birthdays, they have back-to-back birthdays. McKenna is a very cool little girl! Her sister, Savannah, is twelve and a half. They are quite the pair. It is very entertaining to watch their interaction with one another. Sometimes they are best buddies and other times they fight…just like siblings do. Welcoming a new baby into a family, as we all know, changes our lives forever. My nephew, Sean Albracht, and his wife, Jennifer, were recently blessed with a baby. On July 31, they welcomed Jackson George Alfred Albracht. The entire Albracht clan (Albracht is my maiden name) welcomed him with open arms. My brother, Tom (Grandpa), took a video of him shortly after he was born and sent it, along with several pictures, in a group text so everyone could see this beautiful little being right after he was born. This is where technology shines. It was very special for all of us. Congratulations to Sean and Jen! When a new baby comes along, it’s a great touchstone for us all to remember and appreciate the time and attention that a newborn requires. The sleepless nights, the joys of our children’s first smiles, when they begin crawling, walking, and all those other early milestones. When I saw the video of Jackson, a flood of memories came back to me about my two “babies.” Where has the time gone? I love my kids. And grandkids. And nieces and nephews. And great-nieces and great-nephews! I am very blessed to have all of them in my life. I also would like to wish a “Happy Birthday” to Roxy Orr, my Operations Manager here at Women’s Edition. September is going to be a great month for us all! Let’s make it great. Enjoy this issue, and we’ll see you next month!

Transitioning to Fall Turn Your Summer Wardrobe Into Fall Looks! By Holly Bell
It’s that awkward time of year again—the beautiful days of summer are winding down, but fall is not quite here yet. The trees are still green and the temperatures are still warm, but evenings start to get cool. What can you wear that will be comfortable all day? Learning to style your favorite summer pieces into early fall looks stretches your wardrobe and allows you some fun experimentation. Summer dresses can easily transition to fall, especially those bright florals with the dark backgrounds that were so popular this year. If the dress is sleeveless, layer a long-sleeved lightweight knit top underneath—it becomes a jumper with a totally different vibe. I really love those short, stretchy tops that are made from lace or sheer fabrics for layering under a dress. They add an extra layer of warmth without adding bulk, and the look is a bit more modern and edgy than the usual choice of topping off the dress with a cardigan. Speaking of cardigans, the look this fall is long, longer, and super long. Layer one of these chic cardigans over anything for an updated fall look. Boots are another way to update a summer look for fall. It’s not time yet for furry knee-high boots, but the weather is perfect for the always fashionable ankle booties (with a little chunky heel). I also love the boot with the cutout toe for this transitional weather. Even though the temperature is still warm, it’s time to put away flip-flops and sandals. Fall is a season for a closed shoe or flat. Leggings have been fighting to take over our lives for several seasons now, and they will officially be in the spotlight this fall and winter. We are not just talking about the black matte stretchy ones that a lot of us live in. We are talking shiny fabrics, bold hues, and tons of loud patterns. These cute leggings are just begging to be matched with all your fall favorites. One thing to remember about leggings: They are not pants. They need to be worn under a dress or a top that covers your bum. We love leggings, but let’s keep it tasteful! Designers are mad about plaid this fall, as usual. Layer an open plaid shirt over your summer tops to bring a bit of a fall mood to your outfit. Black, white, and gray, along with Americana red and blue, will be the top color stories for fall. Ever-popular denim will be here again but in different ways. Pop that denim jacket over your summer dress for cool evenings. You will be warm and on trend. The newest jacket of the season will be velvet. Done in glorious tones of navy, emerald, and gold, the velvet jacket is richness on top of richness. You will be surprised how much use you will get out of this classy jacket. Pop it over jeans and a tee, over a summer floral dress or skirt, or over black pants or a dress for an evening out. The velvet jacket is going to be my go-to new purchase for fall.

Stop In Today! Your fall wardrobe will not be complete without a jazzy leather jacket. Leather (and faux leather) have been worked and reworked to be beautiful, comfortable, and definitely wearer-friendly for all ages. Bomber shapes, along with longer varieties, would be perfect to toss over a summer dress or skirt. Add leggings and booties, and you’ve transformed your summer favorites into fall faves! Leather pants will also be in the forefront, with the added offerings of leather leggings and sweatpants. You will find leather in all sorts of proliferations, from baggy to trim and from tailored to studded. Leather will be an important look to wear now and into the winter. Leather pants with a summery top and a chunky necklace will get you ready for an evening out this fall. Another way to move into a more fall look is with a trendy fall bag. Put away those fun fabric totes—bags this fall will be structured and tailored, with lots of gold embellishments and closures. Traditional fall colors will prevail, with dark red being the new fall color. Adding a scarf to your outfit also helps to convey a more transitional look. Olive green is the go-to color for scarves and wraps. It is a great fall hue, as it works with basically everything. There will still be plenty of sweater wraps, ponchos, and large scarf wraps to throw over your outfit when it is not quite coat weather yet. As summer winds down, enjoy the beautiful weather and the mixing of trends for fall 2017. With the right additions, your summer wardrobe will stretch for months! Editor’s Note: Holly has been in the fashion industry for over 30 years as a buyer, boutique store owner, visual merchandiser, and fashion show producer. She is currently the owner of a modeling agency. Holly regularly appears on local TV doing fashion segments. WE

powder, one-half cup of shredded Parmesan, one-half cup of dried breadcrumbs, and 1 egg. Mix well and form into bite-size balls. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. (You can always use a large bag of frozen meatballs if you don’t want to make your own.) Put the meatballs into the slow cooker and cook on low for 4–6 hours. Oven Garden Potato Fries Wash and halve 8 russet potatoes lengthwise, then cut each half into long wedges. Place wedges on a cookie sheet lined with aluminum foil or parchment paper and drizzle with 4 Tablespoons of olive oil. Season with salt, pepper, rosemary—whatever spices you want. Bake at 425 degrees for 25–30 minutes. Slow Cooker Beef Chunk cut a 2-3–pound chuck roast. Sear all sides in 2 Tablespoons of canola oil, until lightly browned. Place in slow cooker with 1 envelope of dry onion soup mix, 1 jar of whole or sliced pepperoncini (and a bit of the juice), and one-half cup of water or beef broth. Cook on low for 6–8 hours. Shred the beef and serve as sandwiches with the gravy. Broccoli Salad Wash 1 head of broccoli and cut into bite-size pieces. In another bowl, mix 1 cup of mayonnaise with 1 teaspoon of vinegar and 1 teaspoon of sugar (taste and adjust). Stir the mixture into the broccoli florets. Add 4 chopped hard-boiled eggs, one-half cup of sliced green olives, and one-fourth of a sliced onion. Add 1 cup of raisins and 5 pieces of cooked and crumbled bacon. Stir well; add more mayo, if needed. Chill overnight.
Fresh Corn Soup Cut the corn off of 5 corn cobs (you will need 4 cups of corn). Sauté the corn in 2 Tablespoons of butter for 2–3 minutes in a soup pot. Add one-fourth cup of sliced onion and sauté for another minute. Add 2 cups of milk, 1 cup of chicken or vegetable stock, 1 clove of minced garlic, 1 teaspoon of fresh oregano, a dash of cinnamon, and salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a boil, then turn the heat down and simmer for 5 minutes. Add one small can of diced green chilies, 1 cup of shredded or cubed Monterey Jack cheese, and 2 diced tomatoes. Heat through. To thicken the soup, blend one-half cup of milk with 3 Tablespoons of flour or cornstarch, add to the soup, and let simmer. If desired, use an immersion blender to smooth and further thicken the soup. For protein, you could add cooked chorizo sausage or crumbled, cooked bacon. Adjust spices as desired. Top with crispy tortilla chips. Garden Minestrone In a stockpot, sauté 4 pieces of bacon until browned. Add 1 peeled and chopped onion, 2 cloves of minced garlic, and 2 teaspoons of fresh oregano. Cook another 3–4 minutes. Add 2 cups of spaghetti sauce and 3 cups of chicken stock (or more, if you wish). Let simmer for 2–3 minutes. Add any chopped fresh vegetables: one-half cup of chopped carrots, one-half cup of chopped celery, one cup of fresh corn off the cob, one chopped zucchini or yellow squash, or 2 chopped tomatoes. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and cover. Cook for 30 minutes. Add 1 can of drained northern beans and one-half cup of small pasta or broken spaghetti. Simmer another 15 minutes. Adjust seasonings. Serve with grated cheese and garlic toast. WE

Omaha Hypnosis Center Unlock the Potential Within By Annie Kontor
What is stopping you from living your best life? Is it those last few pounds you want to lose? Is it the stress in your everyday life? Are you stuck behind obstacles that keep you from advancing in your career? We all struggle with things that prevent us from reaching our peak performance. Overcoming these challenges can seem like a daunting task. Jeff and Devan Martin of the Omaha Hypnosis Center take a different view: They see setbacks as building blocks to success. This husband-and-wife team has made it their mission to help their clients realize their true potential in any facet of their lives through the power of hypnosis. Wait a minute, you might be thinking. Hypnosis? You mean keeping your eyes on a gold pocket watch dangled by a person wearing a cape? Nothing could be further from the truth. In 2008, Jeff and Devan first opened the Lincoln Hypnosis Center. They saw a need to help people in Omaha, as well, so they opened the Omaha Hypnosis Center in 2012. Over the years, they have helped hundreds of clients quit smoking, lose weight, become better athletes, and realize their personal and professional goals. How does it work? Hypnosis is the art and science of suggestion. It helps people overcome old negative habits, allowing them to let go of the unwanted things that have hurt them in the past. At its core, hypnosis helps people change their perception—how information is taken in and processed. Poor perception leads people to develop bad habits, such as overeating or smoking, to cope with life. The process at Omaha Hypnosis Center begins with a free hypnosis consultation, in which a new client meets with Jeff or Devan to assess goals. The potential client undergoes testing so she can see what hypnosis feels like. Then Jeff and Devan devise a plan uniquely tailored to that individual. Changing her outlook on weight loss transformed Gailanne Hindsley’s life. “I have found my inner self,” she relates. “My body feels at peace—I never knew how your body feels after losing 29 pounds. Jeff has helped me all along the way.” The Martins stand by their work. Their service guarantee is the best in the business. Once a client comes in for weight loss, she continues her visits until she gets to her goal weight. If the weight comes back, she can return for reinforcement sessions. Who can benefit from hypnosis? Anybody! “We’ve helped thousands of people quit smoking, become fit, sleep better, and find new jobs,” Jeff observes. “We have enabled people to conquer their fears and have less stress. Results happen here.”

No one offers what Omaha Hypnosis Center does—an entire program based on the client’s needs. The Martins are skilled at meeting Devan and Jeff Martin a patient exactly where she is. They are trained both in hypnotism and in the field of neuro-linguistic programming, and they are members of the National Guild of Hypnotists. Jeff is a founding member of the Master Hypnotist Society, and Devan has extensive training as a personal and executive coach. The Martins can also help clients improve their work performance. Medical providers and educators are excellent candidates for hypnosis. Because of their stressful work environments, it is critical that they remain calm and relaxed. Hypnosis helps these professionals deal with the pressures of their jobs so that they can leave the stress at the office and relax more at home. “When I met Devan, I had become stressed out beyond control, both at home and at work,” says Cassie Taylor, the owner of Black Belt Movers. “Devan helped me find the true source of the issues I was having. She helped me focus on the steps to move forward. She doesn’t make excuses for our issues. She helps us resolve them so we can find the light at the end of the tunnel.” The Omaha Hypnosis Center also works with athletes of all ages. Many players have athletic ability but need help fine-tuning their skills to step into “the zone,” where they can push beyond barriers more naturally. To be at the top of their game, athletes need mentors to help them shake it off when they are feeling down about athletic setbacks. Jeff is passionate about helping athletes reach their full potential. What is preventing you from fulfilling your dreams? If you’re ready to use your obstacles as building blocks to success, check out the Omaha Hypnosis Center. For more information about all the services Jeff and Devan Martin provide, visit www.omahahypnosiscenter. com or call 402-502-9334. In Lincoln, visit www. lincolnhypnosiscenter.com or call 402-465-0409. The Omaha Hypnosis Center is located at 11414 West Center Road, Suite 325, in Omaha. WE

Things to Worry About Borrowing Trouble
By Sharon Knierim
Are you a worrier? Do you obsess about things that you cannot change? Welcome to the club. It seems that since the beginning of time, people have worried and fussed about their personal lives and the lives of others. We worry about success and being happy. We strive to make others happy and spend untold amounts of time reconciling family matters, world problems, property issues, and…well, sometimes it seems there isn’t enough time in the day to worry about everything. If you are keeping a physical list of topics to worry about, you might be overdoing it. Our dear mother was a worldclass worrier. Looking back, she probably did have reasons for concern. She and Dad raised five children on a 160-acre farm that seemed to have its own mind about production rates. When Mother was asked if she worried less about her children now that we were grown and gone from home, she replied, “Oh, no. Now that I can’t see you every day, I worry about what you’re doing and if you are healthy and doing well.” That’s a classic answer from a true worrier. There is a long-held belief in some faiths that worrying is a sin. Well, we don’t want to be sinners, do we? That in itself is a good reason to give up worrying. Just walk away from it. That may sound easy, but we all know it’s not. As a very young person, I used to be sure that if I worried

enough about something awful happening, it would not happen because of my ability to worry it away. That logic is flawed and really offers no comfort. And besides, if the awful thing did happen, I would blame myself and worry that I hadn’t worried enough about it. Does that make sense? It shouldn’t, and it doesn’t. As an adult, I still worry, but at least I have changed my tactics. It seems that humans are hardwired to worry. Do you suppose Adam and Eve worried during their stint in the Garden of Eden? Do you suppose Christopher Columbus worried? Or the many wives of Henry the Eighth? You can bet they did, and maybe you can understand why. But in these instances, worrying itself did not and would not have made a difference. Christopher Columbus probably countered his worry with the science and logic available during his journey.

As for the wives of Henry, well—maybe there was a way to escape their fate, and maybe there wasn’t. Either way, sitting around ruminating wouldn’t have changed anything. (Still, I would have worried, too.) When we are truly honest with ourselves, we realize that worrying is nothing more than the negative use of energy. It accomplishes nothing. It is best to be aware of a potential situation, in case action needs to be taken, but don’t invite trouble by actively imagining the worst possible scenario. One close friend has suggested that the art of worrying is perhaps a defense mechanism. Her feeling is that as long as we spend our time and energy worrying, we are held in place by it. According to this wise sage, worrying requires no immediate action. She may be partially right. Another friend has suggested that worry is a false pathway to martyrdom. There may be some truth to this idea. Worry can certainly be used to make other people feel guilty. Who hasn’t arrived home later than expected, only to be told, “I was so worried about you!”? This usually precedes, “You should have called.” If you are on the worry bandwagon, see if you can get off of it. Worry creates stress, and we all know what that can mean to our physical and mental health—not to mention our relationships and productivity. This is not to suggest that we all become absolutely blasé. Still, there are more positive approaches to handling concerns. If you are worried about someone in your life, sit down and have a heart-to-heart, diplomatic conversation. Many people who are the target of worry don’t realize they are causing anxiety for others. The point of a discussion like this is not to make anyone feel guilty or remorseful but to determine methods to handle the builtup trepidation. If fear and worry about world affairs is taking a big chunk out of your stamina, change your habits. Look for positive happenings and make positive things happen. Take action. There is a lot of happiness to be had in life without clouding it with worrying about things we cannot change. Whether you turn to your faith or find the answers in logic or positive methods of problem-solving, giving up unnecessary worrying is always a good move. WE

Vantage Point
Chastain Otis Insurance and Financial Services Protecting Your Best Interests By Robyn V. Powell
When back-to-back storms hit the Omaha region this summer, causing massive power outages and damage to property and vehicles, many people were unprepared for the second storm. Many homeowners are now revisiting their current policies for coverages and deductibles. Learning that insurance would not pay for losses they assumed were covered added insult to injury. Without electricity, refrigeration failed, resulting in food spoilage. Some who incurred hail damage both to their home’s roof and to their vehicles during the storm were informed by their insurance companies that there would be multiple deductibles to pay. Crystal Miller, an agent with Chastain Otis Insurance and Financial Services, says the storm was “an unwelcome wake-up call to many people, driving home the importance of understanding exactly what is and is not covered in your policy.” Insurance is complicated and can be very confusing. Policies contain a lot of fine print, differ in coverage and how claims are settled, and need to be reviewed and updated every so often. Navigating through the maze of complications, strange language, waivers, deductibles, clauses, and rates can be time-consuming and overwhelming. What seems like the cheapest insurance when you first buy it may turn out to be the most expensive when something goes wrong. So, while everyone needs insurance, what they really need is insurance designed specifically for them. Otherwise, how do you know if you’re underinsured or overpaying? Chastain Otis specializes in customizing insurance to each client’s needs. As the largest family-owned, independent insurance agency in Omaha, says owner Dave Chastain, they provide home, auto, business, life, and health insurance for individuals and commercial clients. “We bring a unique value to our clients by providing choice, advice, and expertise,” explains Crystal. “Our licensed and experienced agents work to find you the right coverage by asking lots of questions and listening to your needs. It’s so important to understand the unique needs of each client in order to design a customized plan. Once we clearly understand the client’s needs, we shop the market for the best plan at the best price. With a pool of insurance companies to draw upon, plans can be tailored to a client’s individual needs at affordable rates.” Crystal also understands the importance of fully understanding your insurance policies before you choose. “At Chastain Otis, we take the time to explain your policy so you understand the fine print, including coverages you may not be aware of,” says Crystal. insurance offers liability protection that extends beyond your property, providing protection if your child Crystal Miller, agent or pet accidentally injures another person in a public space. When you insure both your home and auto with certain companies, you may benefit from a single deductible. If both home and auto are involved in the same loss (as in the case of the recent hail damage, for example), only one deductible applies. Another unique feature some carriers provide is coverage for equipment breakdown that will protect you if a power outage results in food spoilage. Emergency lockout insurance has no deductible and pays up to $200 for expenses incurred for services to gain entry into a covered auto or residence. “One of the greatest secrets of auto insurance,” explains Crystal, “is increasing your medical pay coverage. Doing so covers immediate bills, ambulance costs, and cosmetic reconstructive surgery for each person in your vehicle—whether you were at fault for the accident or not. For a small additional premium, you can extend your coverage from $1,000 to $25,000, and it pays for bills before the claim is finalized. There are so many uninsured or underinsured drivers today; it’s critical to make sure you’re protected.” Chastain Otis has been serving clients in the Omaha area for over 80 years. As a family-owned and -operated business, they understand the importance of taking care of loved ones without breaking the bank in the process. “Whether you’re looking to cover your family or employees in your business, whether you need to cover one person or 50 people, we treat everyone like family,” Crystal concludes. “When the time comes to make a claim, we will be with you to make sure you come through it as you should.” You’ve worked hard to get where you are! The last thing you want is to take a gamble on insurance. Whatever your insurance needs, the professionals at Chastain Otis have got you covered. Fresh Concept
Personalized Jewelry Every Piece Tells A Story By Ellen M. Walker
What makes the difference between a lovely piece of jewelry and a truly treasured keepsake? It’s the personal touch. What better way to express your love and preserve a memory than by designing and purchasing a beautiful personalized gift? We all love to give a great gift. We love bearing the gift that she will proudly wear and show off to her friends. We love watching her get a little teary-eyed when she opens a gift that preserves a special memory. Many of us would love to preserve a memory; we just don’t know how to do it. A visit to the jewelry store or a quick perusal online brings about so many incredible personalized gift options. The availability of jewelry to personalize is overwhelming: monogrammed jewelry, birthstones, inscriptions, custom designs—where do we begin? What should you look for in a personalized jewelry gift for someone special? If you’re new to buying jewelry, visit some jewelry stores and talk to the staff. Let them educate you about the 4 Cs of diamonds (cut, color, clarity, and carat). Let them explain the differences between gold, silver, and platinum. Let them show you what each gemstone represents. The sales clerks at jewelry stores are excellent sources of information. It’s also essential to know what kind of jewelry you are looking for. Think about the reason you’re purchasing the jewelry. Is it a holiday gift, a birthday gift, or a gift for an occasion special to the two of you? Make sure the gift equals the occasion, and make sure the piece sends the message you want to send. The next part of your research is with the lady herself. To choose a gift she’ll truly love, you first need to pay attention to the jewelry she already wears and how she wears it. Does she wear jewelry every day or only on special occasions? Does she wear unique and unusual styles, or does she prefer a classic and traditional look? Styles of jewelry change over time, but the top choices in jewelry are pretty static. Diamonds, as they say, are a girl’s best friend. According to sales figures, this may be true. Cut, color, carat, and clarity are what you need to look for. Walk into the store and mention the 4 Cs, and you are already ahead of the game. Pearls remain a classic gift. Freshwater, saltwater, natural, cultured, and imitation pearls provide a wide range of options for every budget. Size, shape, and clarity all play into what type of jewelry you will purchase. Gemstones come in many different shapes and sizes. They can be natural or created within a laboratory setting, or they may even be imitation. Gemstones are typically measured by their overall size and by how much they weigh. Keep in mind that some gemstones may be treated, which may or may not impact the overall worth of the gem.

Precious metals play into almost any jewelry you purchase, as the metal is what encases the gem. When considering silver, look for the words “sterling” and “silver-plated.” Silver-plated simply means that silver is placed over another metal; sterling guarantees that the metal is at least 92.5 percent silver. Platinum has made its mark over the past few decades; it is typically mixed with 10 percent other metals. Gold continues to be sought after. You can tell the purity of the gold by the karat. Because gold is naturally soft, it is often mixed with other metals to gain stability—or to adjust its color. Yellow gold is the metal’s natural color. White gold and rose gold are simply yellow gold mixed with other metals, which changes the tint. Birthstones have a long history behind them, depending upon the story you are reading. Some birthstones are thought to have medicinal benefits, while others are thought to have mythical and biblical meanings. Mother’s and grandmother’s rings, which contain the birthstones of a woman’s children or grandchildren, are very popular gifts. What mother doesn’t love to showcase her children with a beautiful piece of jewelry? Choose your precious metal and your setting and include the gems that correspond with the births of her children. Mother’s necklaces encase the gems in a pendant or pendants, providing an alternate way to personalize the jewelry. Larger pendants could even include the children’s names. If you want something even more unique, consider a mother’s brooch, which she can wear to accentuate any outfit. For a fun gift that builds over time, consider a custom charm bracelet. Designed to showcase the many different passions and interests of their
www.womensedition.com
wearers, charms are a fun way to share your life! There are many different options to choose from; however, PANDORA leads the market on charms. Designed to be customized at any length, bracelets allow charms to be strategically placed directly around the wrist. Charms come in a wide variety of shapes, styles, and types. Imagine celebrating her favorite NFL team, her alma mater, her pets, and her children in a stylish and modern way. An additional perk is that a charm bracelet can be built upon, year after year. If you struggle with new gift ideas for every occasion, picture yourself buying a new charm for each anniversary, birthday, or holiday. This gift is sure to please. A newer customized jewelry option is fingerprint jewelry. Imagine creating a custom pendant or even a keychain from a child’s fingerprint, handprint, or footprint! What mother wouldn’t be thrilled with such a gift? Specially trained jewelers can create these keepsakes in gold or silver, and this treasurable keepsake can be enjoyed regardless of the age of your child. Another popular piece this season for women and men is the signet ring. Signet rings have been around since the 13th century. What was once used as an official mark or signature to sign a document is now one of the only pieces of bijoux you’ll see on supermodels and businessmen alike. Signet rings may be adorned with initials or a personal design. Whether the style is classic or contemporary, there is a signet ring design for anyone. Repurposing old or outdated jewelry is also popular. What if you already have an exquisite piece of jewelry, but it doesn’t fit with your loved one’s personal style? Or perhaps you have a beloved ring or heirloom piece that has been passed down for
generations, but the setting is very old-fashioned. Did you know that you can have that piece repurposed to fit another style? A specialized jeweler can help you create something amazing from an outdated heirloom. You can take an old and tarnished ring and have the gems reset into a beautiful new piece that not only carries on tradition but also puts a smile on your loved one’s face! It takes a certain kind of imagination to visualize an old piece coming back to life. Many jewelry stores are equipped to redesign jewelry or create custom pieces. When you visit your jeweler, bring along the item you want to have restyled. If you want a brand-new design, bring along any photographs or sketches. If you don’t have any ideas, your jeweler may sketch something for you based on your needs. Customized jewelry can take some time, especially if the jeweler specializes in custom pieces, so be sure to place your order with plenty of leeway from when you need it. Ask for an estimated finish time for when the piece will be ready to pick up. With the holidays approaching, consider giving a gift that will continue to give, every time your loved one wears it. Consider personalized jewelry as a keepsake that can be passed down for generations. Each generation can carry a little bit of their family in a treasured piece of jewelry. While there are many options to choose from, don’t get overwhelmed. When in doubt, simply ask your loved one what she prefers. Even if she knows there’s some jewelry coming her way, you can still surprise her with the final product. Out and About
Tufly’s Shoe Center Promoting Happy, Healthy Feet By Roxy Orr
Fitness experts urge us to take 10,000 steps a day to stay fit and healthy. That’s about 3,650,000 steps a year—no small task, especially if your feet hurt. Remember the saying “my dogs are barking”? If you are experiencing foot pain, come visit Alan and Dorothy Tufly of Tufly’s Shoe Center. They fill doctors’ footwear prescriptions for diabetes, plantar fasciitis, arthritic deformities, and other problems. They are specialists at solving foot problems with great-fitting, stylish shoes. We tend to focus on many other parts of our bodies to maintain health—we moisturize, we exercise, we tone, we diet—but we often ignore the important platform upon which our skeleton balances. If you have ever had a foot problem, you know it’s true: If your feet hurt, everything hurts. “We have solutions to foot problems, and the trust of our customers is so important to us,” Dorothy says. “That is what we strive for with each customer.” Alan and Dorothy are passionate about helping their customers find the right shoes for their individual needs. The Tuflys opened their shoe store 24 years ago and

have been at their present location at 16909 Lakeside Hills Plaza for 12 years. Alan and Dorothy have a combined 55 years of experience in the business. While I was in the store, looking at the different styles of shoes, a young woman came in with a special request—she had small, wide feet. She was a special education teacher, and she knew that she needed comfortable shoes with good support. Dorothy asked her key questions about her needs, her style, and what types of shoes she had liked in the past. After listening carefully to her customer and zeroing in on what she needed and desired,

Dorothy suggested several shoes. Ask yourself if this is the type of treatment you might get at a big box, self-serve shoe store. There is a certified pedorthist on staff at Tufly’s Shoe Center. Dorothy calls pedorthists “pharmacists for the feet.” Pedorthists have completed additional educational and clinical training in the mechanics of the foot; they work with other healthcare professionals to ensure that each customer is evaluated correctly regarding foot needs. One of the solutions for balance or gait difficulties is molded orthotics. At Tufly’s Shoe Center, your orthotics are fitted and molded to your own foot. Orthotics are fit specifically for each customer and are made in the in-house lab. Orthotics can help customers who are suffering from pain in their feet, knees, hips, and back. Shoe manufacturers are listening to men and women who are demanding great style, fit, and comfort in their daily footwear. The Finn Comfort line is known as the ultimate therapy shoe, improving posture and muscle function. Several years ago, I had a colleague who was going to Italy for three weeks. She asked me what kind of walking shoes to take with her. I referred her to Tufly’s Shoe Center, where she purchased a red pair of Finn Comfort sandals. She later told me that those shoes were the best investment she made for that trip. Finns have removable insoles, allowing you to put in your own custom insoles, if needed. That way, you can have great arch support and a stylish shoe.
Other brands available at the store include Brooks, Think!, Dansko, Aravon, Alegria, Earth, Vionic, Dunham, Saucony, P.W. Minor, Drew, and Naot. Danskos are popular with professionals in the medical, culinary, and teaching fields. Finn Comfort’s Finnamic line of stability rocker sole shoes are a very important line for people who need relief from plantar fasciitis, pain in the metatarsal of the mid foot, and arthritis problems. The Tuflys are particularly impressed with the Naot brand—a newcomer in spring 2014. This line from Israel (“Naot” means “oasis”) has been around since 1942 but is relatively new to the United States. Tufly’s carries all styles of shoes, including workout, casual dress, business casual, and special occasion shoes. The office collections are especially popular with male and female young professionals. Young or old, working or retired, active or relaxed—no matter what your style, you’ll find shoes at Tufly’s that fit your needs. Alan and Dorothy are happy to place special orders, and they keep notes about your purchases for future reference. They’re eager to help you find a shoe that keeps those dogs from barking. Shoes that address your foot pain can still have a “Wow!” factor. Remember that 10,000-step journey? It begins with a first step to Tufly’s Shoe Center. Visit Tufly’s Shoe Center at 16909 Lakeside Hills Plaza, in Omaha. For more information, call 402-614-2221 or visit www. TuflyShoeCenter.com. WE

Stayin’ Alive With Cure, Inc. Safety Training and Products for the Office By Julianne M. Dunn, RN, BSN, JD
At the beginning, it was Dan Hosford and his safety products, going door to door. In 1996, after researching the market, Dan used his personal credit card and bought products from wholesalers. Before he sold a single Band-Aid, he established a business plan, hired a lawyer, formed a corporation, secured insurance, and developed a catalog. Only after establishing a firm legal and business foundation did he start selling to Omahaarea businesses. Internet sales would come later, at www.TheCureSafety.com. For a former broadcast communications major from UNO and general manager of KLNG radio in Council Bluffs, starting Cure, Inc., was a gamble that has paid off for Dan. He is joined by his wife, Peg (customer service, shipping, and receiving); his nephew, Alex Tworek (IT, website design, and maintenance); and Michael Hogan, who does all of some things and some of everything (CPR training, customer service, and sales) to make the business go and grow. The product side of Cure, Inc., focuses on first aid
supplies, first aid kits, earplugs, safety glasses, fall prevention and protection, and work gloves. The company sells safety products through door-to-door contacts, catalog sales, and online at www.TheCureSafety.com. The company also provides several sizes of metal first aid boxes that affix to the wall. Businesses can also buy boxes to place throughout their office(s) in accordance with workplace safety rules and regulations. Cure, Inc., customer service representatives visit these businesses on a regular basis to refill the boxes. After about three years of selling safety products, Dan began to receive requests from established

Bye-Bye, Bulges! Non-Surgical Fat Reduction By Monica L. Davis
Sometimes, no matter how much you motivate the mind, the body just doesn’t follow. Even with the strictest adherence to diet and fitness, your body doesn’t always deliver the results you want. Traditionally, liposuction was the next step for fat reduction. In this procedure, unwanted fat cells are broken up and drawn out of the body with a small tube called a cannula and a powerful vacuum. Though this procedure is effective, it is also invasive and may require the use of general anesthesia. Luckily, our options have multiplied! Many minimally invasive and even non-invasive cosmetic alternatives to traditional lipolysis are now available. SculpSure is an FDA-approved laser treatment for non-invasive lipolysis. The procedure uses a hands-free heat laser belt, which employs specific wavelengths and heat to eliminate fat cells on areas of the body like the flanks and abdomen. This device literally melts the fat away. The procedure takes approximately 25 minutes and can actually target multiple areas at one time! In the months following treatment, your body will naturally flush out the eliminated fat cells. SculpSure patients have reported visible results as early as six weeks after the first treatment, but complete results are typically seen 12 weeks after the first treatment. SculpSure is appropriate for many body types and is suitable for men or women. The fat cells are destroyed during the procedure, so they will not return. (Of course, other fat cells in your body will remain, so weight gain
is possible if proper diet and exercise are not maintained.) Verjú (also known as the “green laser”) uses a low-level green laser system in which light passes through the skin and liquifies the fat within cells beneath the skin. The liquified fat then leaves the fat cell (without harming the cell itself). The fat is processed naturally in the body’s lymphatic system, and the fat cell shrinks because it’s no longer full of fat. The areas of the body most commonly targeted with Verjú are the hips, thighs, and waist. Patients typically report seeing results after just a few sessions, though more sessions produce more results. The procedure is painless, and you may return to regular activities immediately afterwards. It’s best to stay properly hydrated so your lymphatic system can work at its best to metabolize the liquified fat. For long-term results, it’s important to maintain a healthy diet and exercise to avoid regaining the fat. ›››

A non-invasive treatment that eliminates stubborn fat by freezing it is CoolSculpting. Cryolipolysis, the science in which CoolSculpting is based, revealed that cold can target fat cells without damaging the skin or surrounding tissues. CoolSculpting is used to safely and effectively treat areas of the body such as the stomach, sides, thighs, and lower back. During the treatment, precisely controlled cooling freezes (and kills) fat cells beneath the surface of the skin. Your body then naturally eliminates the dead cells in the following weeks. CoolSculpting treatments take about an hour for each area treated, and patients may return to routine activities immediately after treatment. Patients have reported noticing results as soon as three weeks after their first treatment, with dramatic results after three months. For maximum results, you may undergo multiple treatments. As with SculpSure, the frozen fat cells are permanently gone. Fat will not return where the cells have been removed, though proper exercise and diet are required to avoid gaining weight in other areas of the body. Lastly, imagine a fat reduction treatment so relaxing it has been compared to a hot stone massage! QuantaShape is a treatment that uses ultrasound therapy and lymphatic massage for non-invasive body shaping. During each 45-minute therapy session, a device emits ultrasonic waves to penetrate the skin and reach the unwanted fat beneath. The ultrasonic waves then incorporate heat to dissolve the fat. A lymphatic massage is used to move the fat toward the lymph nodes, where it is eliminated through the body’s natural lymphatic system. Three to four days after each session, a brief lymphatic massage may be used to further remove fat waste. QuantaShape is typically used on the thighs, flanks, hips, and buttocks. While some patients have reported noticing visible results immediately, maximum results will require three to five sessions. Finding the right specialist is essential to your experience and results. Make sure your board-certified surgeon, dermatologist, or esthetician has the certification, training, and education to perform the procedure you are interested in. When you meet, be sure to get all your questions answered. The more you know what to expect, the more successful your non-invasive fat reduction experience will be! Launch Your Creation We Can Make a New Decision We’ve decided that we want to “go for it”—it is time to grow in our chosen profession. Perhaps it’s a promotion we are going after or we have decided to expand our business. We’re excited, we’re passionate, we’re committed! We line up our energy, visualize how we want it to unfold, match up our energy to our desire and…presto! We have deliberately created what we set out to do. “You create your own reality.” —Seth Roberts So now we are in the thick of our creation of our reality. We are working more hours than we have in years. There are conference calls, meetings, and business travel. Whoa—all of a sudden, we realize this is not quite what we had in mind when we launched our creation. All of a sudden, we realize that we are struggling. “…There is no reason for you to suffer or struggle your way to or through anything.” —Abraham–Hicks So what should we do? After all, we are the ones that made the decision to go for it. Is it one of those things where we just need to suck it up? Hey—we made our own bed, now we must lie in it, right? Wrong! “The best way to predict the future is to invent it.” —Alan Kay
By Janet Van deWalle
So what’s the answer? We return to the “creation” mode. We look at how our lives would be if “we could have it our way.” We realize that we do not have to struggle just because we are growing. We realize that the purpose of life is to seek our joy. The wonderful thing about creation is that it is an ever evolving experience. When we initially set our goal, we were standing in a different place than we are today. We looked at what we wanted. We successfully created it, and guess what? We are now standing in a different place than we were when we launched our original intent. Hey, guess what? We can make a new decision to create a different experience in our life than what we are experiencing right now. Some may say that if you want to grow, you have to struggle. Some may say that this is simply the reality of the situation. “Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.” —Albert Einstein So, the answer is to create a new reality in our lives. One that is fun and exciting, one that we are passionate about. Remember how we do it? We now know what it is that we don’t want, which immediately brings us to knowing what we do want. We visualize and line up our energies to get into the feeling of how it will be. We then get out of the Universe’s way and allow it to deliver to us the WE creation that we have launched. WE

Music as Metaphor Learning Life Skills Through Music I like music! I like listening to music, although I don’t often turn on the radio when I’m at home. (I’m usually not in one room long enough to listen.) I also don’t have the radio on when I’m using the computer because I like the quiet…especially when I’m composing a letter or writing a column. It’s easier for me to think when it’s quiet. When I’m on a long drive, however, I like to have the radio turned on. Going cross-country, I scan for available stations, both AM and FM, and find a variety of things to listen to. One time, while driving through New Mexico, I came across a station run by the Navajo tribe. They were playing a native drum selection. Another time, I listened to a local talk show. I recently found a program playing classical violin arrangements. The hosts discussed each piece and gave their opinion. My choices are whatever is available. Music is a big part of my life. My husband was a musician and played with many local bands over the years: rock, folk, jazz, big band, golden oldies, classics, new wave…a little bit of everything. No rap or hip hop, though, and seldom anything that would be classified as country/western. My appreciation of music grew. That’s one of the nice things about music—you can always explore different genres and listen to different musicians. I learned the importance of music in life. Music teaches discipline. Many musicians first learn the basics through lessons; others learn to play by ear. Most musicians I know play more than

one instrument—some play enough to be a one-man band, but everyone has a specialty. Good musicians play all the time. Even when they don’t have their instrument, they hear music and think about how they would play it. Exploring different types of music and listening to how the same song is played by different musicians encourages experimentation. I think that’s why my husband liked jazz…he could experiment with different arrangements. When a musician plays with other musicians, he learns to collaborate and cooperate. Music is a common language. Whether playing solo, in a small group, or in a large band, musicians have a common end: usually, to please themselves as much as to please their audience. I think of music as a metaphor for life. We must learn to interact with others. Like life, music takes cooperation—if it isn’t there, chaos results. Music also takes tolerance. Whatever the level of talent, the type of music, the rhythm, or the tempo, one can learn from differences. Music encourages change and variety. It also demands respect for those who have come before. Do you remember how our parents thought our music was so awful? Remember how horrible we thought their music was? How do you feel about it today? There’s always something to be learned. Just listen. Editor’s Note: Marge has three children, two grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She holds advanced degrees in education. Her life’s mission is to teach everyone that kids are people, too. WE

Bathroom Renovations Make a Stylish Splash
By Robyn V. Powell
Whether you’re thinking about putting a “For Sale” sign in front of your house or just want to enhance your lifestyle, you may want to consider a bathroom remodel. An updated bathroom is one of the best ways to boost property value and get more enjoyment from your home. With an average 70 percent return on investment, a bathroom remodel is always a worthwhile project. Realtors tell us that, from a buyer’s perspective, the bathroom is just about as important as the kitchen. After all, shouldn’t the room where you begin and end your day be a luxurious place that gives you a good feeling? Today’s bathroom trends draw inspiration from the past, combining luxe materials and rich color with modern, minimal shapes for a look that’s clean and timeless. Consider cabinets with furniture appeal—ones that make the piece look like fine furniture rather than just a box that holds a sink. As part of the trend toward darker, moodier colors throughout the home, new bathrooms are emerging in somber and dramatic colors, as well. Balancing dusky walls with shiny white fixtures and gold or silver accents adds richness and keeps things from getting too gloomy. Hardware is the jewelry of the bathroom, and the right hardware can really take the room to the next level. Even if sleek and minimal is your style, your bathroom is the perfect place to add a touch of opulence. Spa-like experiences are in demand. People want the master
bathroom to be special—even extraordinary. Create a spa shower by incorporating a rainfall showerhead. What better way to begin your day? While heated floors are definitely a luxury, they can be a game-changing upgrade in a cold climate. Heated floors can also save homeowners money by allowing them to keep temperatures lower in their home without the worry of having cold floors. Tap into new technology by installing water-resistant music and Bluetooth systems in the bathroom. Streaming music in the bathroom can add a little pep to your morning routine or help relax you as you get ready for bed. When updating a powder room, the trick is to create big impact in a petite space. One of the best ways to pull this off is to select a vanity as a statement piece. For a sophisticated look, try an antique cabinet fitted with a marble top and an undermount basin. A beautiful mirror and elegant sconces complete the look. ›››

If you’re lucky enough to live in a home with historical value, preserve its integrity and create a lavish bath with sophisticated marble. Marble takes a bathroom from bland to brilliant by bouncing the light around—it makes even a small bath more spacious and instantly richer. Opt for paneled cabinetry and for fixtures and hardware that reflect vintage styling. Children’s bathrooms should be practical and attractive. Popular trends, like blue walls paired with white cabinetry and fixtures, are visually appealing and fresh. Blue has a calming effect on the mind and body, creating an ideal setting for bath time. For playful touches, draw upon trending nautical or marine themes. Choose from a delightful array of starfish-shaped bathmats or shower curtains that feature marine animals like whales or dolphins. Remodeling a bathroom is an ideal time to cut down on your water usage. Installing low-flow faucets, showerheads, and toilets can reduce water usage by 30 percent with no noticeable reduction in effectiveness. That adds up to tremendous savings on your water bill. While a tankless water heater can save money, it may not be the right choice for a remodel. The initial cost of installing a tankless water heater is high, and retrofitting a home with an existing tank system can add to that cost. Your home’s piping, gas line, and gas meter may need to be resized, and special venting will be needed for safety. Check with your contractor to see what would be required in your home. If your remodeling project involves changing your floor plan or adding to your home’s square footage, consider hiring an architect who will examine your home, listen to your ideas, and come up with a design solution. Once you’ve settled on a design, look for an experienced contractor to head up your bathroom remodel. Word of mouth is—by far—the best way to find a qualified professional to tackle the job. Ask relatives, friends, and neighbors for referrals, and check their references. Ask each reference if the job was completed on time and on budget and whether she would use the contractor again. After zeroing in on a contractor, make sure you have the entire contract in writing. It’s always a good time to update a bathroom! Transform your bathroom from a blah-but-functional space into a place you and your guests will be glad to go. Claxton Fireplace Center Keeping the Home Fires Burning By Robyn V. Powell
When temperatures drop and dusk falls early, there’s nothing more inviting than curling up beside an open fireplace. Something about the smell of slow-burning wood, the sound of crackling flames, and the feeling of cozy warmth draws us to the hearth. For centuries, the fireplace has served as the heart of the home—a gathering place for family and friends seeking warmth and companionship. Today, the fireplace remains central to our sense of what home means: family and security. Realtors also tell us that a fireplace ranks high on a homebuyer’s wish list, adding value and resulting in a quicker sale. If your home doesn’t have a fireplace or the existing one is not in working order, there’s good news. With the help of Claxton Fireplace Center, you can add a new fireplace or update an existing one without breaking the bank. Claxton Fireplace Center in Omaha has been selling, servicing, and installing fireplaces for over 20 years; they specialize in refacing and fireplace additions. They handle projects from start to finish, eliminating worry and saving you time and money. Owner Dan Claxton and his experienced team of professionals have the expertise to help you understand the options that might work best for your home. “We ask a lot of questions to understand your needs,” says Dan. “We talk about whether you might choose wood-burning or gas, or whether you want shelving or a custom mantel.” No matter where you want to put a fireplace, Dan and his team will help you find something to suit your taste and your home. Claxton Fireplace Center can also help with solutions for fireplaces that are outdated or don’t work. For instance, gas fireplace units can be inserted into existing wood-burning fireplaces with all fumes vented directly outdoors by way of piping placed inside the existing masonry chimney. This ensures a safe and clean system for the home. Visit the Claxton Fireplace Center showroom to view 24 different types and styles of fireplaces—and how they look when they’re actually burning. “One of the greatest keys to our success is our knowledgeable in-house team,” explains Dan. “A fireplace installation can involve as many as 10 different skilled trade professionals, including stone, tile, framing, and carpet experts, as well as painters and roofers. Clients really appreciate that they can have us coordinate and manage the entire project. If they have any questions or concerns, they don’t have to track down different contractors. We manage the project in its entirety, guaranteeing the level of quality.” Renee Holder, a recent client, says, “The experience we had with Claxton Fireplace couldn’t

have been better. They were on time every day, cleaned up after themselves, and completed the entire project on time. I was especially impressed with how Dan Claxton, the owner, would respond to email questions so promptly.” Another client, Kristin Olson, also had a great experience. “When it came time to update our 1970s-era fireplace, we knew exactly who to call—Claxton Fireplace,” Kristin shares. “I’d heard great feedback from friends and family who’d used them, so I didn’t hesitate to reach out. Our initial consultation was extremely informative, and we easily made our product choices in their gallery. Through several home visits, we were able to customize our choices from their wide selection of products and finishes. The installation team was courteous, professional, and responsive to our needs. We are thrilled with the finished product—it’s sleek, modern, and perfect for our home.” Owning and managing a small business requires wearing a lot of hats, says Dan. “Our business is very hands-on. Managing projects requires me to know the ins and outs of every job, from the initial meeting with clients through to completion. Of course, I want the end result to be great, but it’s important that the process be just as good.” At the heart of Dan’s philosophy is a commitment to excellence, attention to detail, and the importance of a long-term relationship with clients. “Once we shake hands and agree to work together, it’s time for me to do my job and deliver on our promise,” he asserts. One of the greatest rewards for Dan is seeing how happy people are with the finished project. “When they’ve dreamed about owning a fireplace, hearing them say, ‘This just makes my house!’ makes it all worthwhile. I love helping people create opportunities to make memories with their families, like birthdays and Christmas, in front of the fireplace. It’s where life happens.” In addition to installing, updating, and retro-fitting fireplaces, Claxton Fireplace Center offers chimney sweep services, performs inspections and maintenance, and does external repair on masonry chimneys. Autumn Landscaping Projects Summer May Be Over, But Yard Work Sure Isn’t!
By Anne Yankus
When the leaves start changing, landscaping is typically the last thing on people’s minds. However, landscaping during the fall is a great way to get a leg up on next spring’s yard. In fact, fall is the best time for yard and garden projects like seeding grass, spreading mulch, pruning dead or dying plants, and planting certain spring bulbs. Not all bulbs should be planted in the fall, but some good examples of fall bulbs are bluebells, crocuses, daffodils, grape hyacinths, irises, snowdrops, spring starflowers, tulips, and winter aconite. These should be planted before the ground freezes. Before placing your bulbs, you may want to consult a landscaping expert, to make sure you’re choosing a spot with optimal growing (and shading) conditions. Another smart fall landscaping project is reseeding the lawn. Even the best-kept lawns can develop bare spots for one reason or another, and the best way to combat these problems is regular reseeding. Reseeding is best done in cooler months before the ground freezes—mid September is a good rule of thumb in the Midwest. The process has several steps, including raking away the thatch layer of grass, clearing debris buildup, loosening the soil, spreading the seed, and going over the whole area with a rake to give the seeds some cover. For large areas or multiple bare spots, it’s best to hire a landscaper and make sure the job gets done right. You’ll need to water the area every day for at least 10 days following planting.
If you feel your lawn has sustained too much damage to be spruced up with basic reseeding, there is always the option of starting again from scratch. As with reseeding, fall is the best time to plant a new lawn, and your first step is to remove your old lawn. This is a big job, and it requires some specialized equipment and skills. First, the existing lawn can be removed with a gas-powered sod cutter. After the grass is gone, the pH level of the soil should be tested, any rocks should be removed, and the ground should be entirely tilled. For optimal grassgrowing conditions, a layer of sand and compost should be mixed with the topsoil. Depending on the results of the pH test, the ›››

soil will need to be amended with lime (to raise the pH), peat moss (to balance the pH), or sulfur (to lower the pH). As you can see, completely rebuilding your lawn from scratch is a pretty arduous process. It is likely in your best interest to hire a landscaping service for this kind of job. As I mentioned previously, the best time frame for fall landscaping depends on where you live. For residents of the northern half of the United States, early fall is best. This is when the soil is still warm but temperatures have cooled since the summer months, which makes watering easier (plus, the water is less likely to evaporate). Make sure your fall landscaping is finished no later than early October. Having to work within such a tight time frame can be tough, but landscapers are properly trained and equipped to get the job done in time. If your yard needs more than maintenance, consider talking to a landscape designer about a larger plan. A landscape designer can design and implement a yard-wide aesthetic for you. Consulting a landscape designer for the initial design plan of your yard is often free—you’ll only be charged for the work you have done. Hiring a landscape designer can be a great choice if you want that top-notch curb appeal but can’t quite visualize the look on your own. If your yard already looks great and just needs regular maintenance, hiring a landscaper can save you an incredible amount of time and energy. They bring expertise and manpower to your yard. Don’t go with the first landscaper who falls in your lap, of course. Be sure to check their credentials first! Make sure they’re certified with any required state or local licenses, and check that they’re federally certified to apply pesticides. It’s also a good sign if they’re members of your state’s landscape or nursery association, as this means they’re involved with professional development programs. Don’t let the lazy days at the end of summer deter you from improving your springtime curb appeal. Some prudent choices now, along with the right professionals to advise and assist, will keep your fall landscaping game strong and bring you beautiful results next spring! Breaking the Cycle of Chronic Pain Combined Treatments Offer Hope
By Kylie Gumpert
From bumps and bruises to broken bones, we’ve all had our scrapes with pain. For some people, though, pain lingers long after it should have stopped. If you are still experiencing pain after an injury has already healed, or if you’re dealing with pain that seems to have come out of nowhere, it’s time to call a physician to see what treatment options might help manage or eliminate your pain. Chronic pain is defined as pain that lasts for 12 weeks or more. It might be caused by a serious injury that doesn’t heal well, or by diseases like cancer, arthritis, or diabetes—or there may be no apparent reason at all. The psychological aspect of pain should not be overlooked. Anxiety, stress, and bad memories can significantly affect a person’s perception of pain. In some cases, this can help explain why some people continue to experience severe pain long after a physical injury has healed. According to the National Institutes of Health, in 2012, 25 million Americans reported suffering from chronic pain. That’s a lot of pain, with a lot of possible causes, that lasts a very, very long time. Because chronic pain has so many variables, it also has many different treatment options (both conventional and alternative). A varied plan is often needed to address the physical, psychological, and social aspects of chronic pain. The journey to resolving chronic pain should start with a visit to your primary care physician. You will likely be referred to a pain

management specialist, who will look at your history and suggest which treatment methods might best address your chronic pain. Conventional treatments for chronic pain include Botox injections, nerve blocks, and pharmaceuticals. For involuntary muscle contractions, Botox can be used to stop neurotransmitters from sending signals to the brain to contract—the muscle then relaxes. Nerve blocks are injections of anesthesia and steroids that help numb severe pain. For some patients, nerve blocks are necessary before they can begin other therapy methods. For some patients, medication is the best way to achieve normal functioning throughout the day. These can range anywhere from acetaminophen to antidepressants, from muscle relaxants to opioids. (Opioids bring a risk of addiction or physical dependence, so they must be used with care.) Alternative treatments may also be helpful, especially if your chronic pain has a psychological component. If needles don’t make you queasy, acupuncture might be something to consider. It’s shown to reduce chronic pain by 50 percent. Massage releases serotonin, a chemical naturally produced by the body that reduces

pain and aids sleep. This can help with many types of pain and may especially help patients with fibromyalgia or arthritis. Yoga, physical therapy, and chiropractic care can address the more physical aspects of chronic pain, helping to stretch out muscles and realign the body to ease pain from pressure or stress. Biofeedback involves a patient being hooked up to a monitor that can visually or auditorily show when they are experiencing pain. By understanding how pain changes measurements within the body, patients can get better at controlling how they perceive pain. Stanford neuropsychiatrist Dr. Kim Bullock has discovered a promising and unexpected method for relief of chronic pain: virtual reality. One patient with chronic pain in his left arm reported that his pain disappeared after the therapy. During his virtual reality sessions, the patient wore a headset and held a handheld device. He controlled the device with his right (pain-free) arm, but the image he saw showed his left arm doing the actions. This “tricked” his brain into thinking that his left arm didn’t hurt. Stem cell therapies for pain might be an option, too. Platelet-rich plasma treatments have shown promise in quickly healing injuries and relieving pain. With this therapy, the patient’s blood is drawn, and then its platelets (abundant with proteins called growth factors) are concentrated and injected into the area of pain. Eating a diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods is something anyone with chronic pain can do. Focusing on vegetables and avoiding meat and dairy has been shown to decrease some pain symptoms, especially when the diet is paired with regular exercise and stress management. Chronic pain can quickly lead to poor sleep, which makes it even harder to cope with the pain and make healthy choices. This can lead to depression or a sense of hopelessness about ever feeling better. Don’t let the cycle of chronic pain control your life. Ask your doctor about what treatment options might help relieve your pain, and implement small changes over time. Pain relief can be a very real thing in your life! An Inside Look
Papio Creek Gems Find Treasure at This Gem of a Store By Traci Osuna
Few people are fortunate enough to be able to say they have created a successful business from a hobby, but that is exactly what Kaffi MacNabb has done. Kaffi and her husband, Jim, own Papio Creek Gems, located just south of 144th and Center. The shop offers pre-made jewelry as well as anything a person would need to create her own one-of-a-kind pieces. “I’ve always had an artistic side,” says Kaffi. When her children were younger, Kaffi was a stay-at-home mom and enjoyed making wearable art. “When my kids got older, I started to look for something more to do, and I kind of fell into doing this.” Her business grew from making jewelry at home to doing showrooms by appointment. She started traveling around the country, bringing her wares to trade shows and gaining many new customers along the way. “It just snowballed,” she says. Kaffi opened her retail store about 12 years ago, and the business is very much a family affair. “My husband has always been very mechanically inclined,” she shares. “Anything that requires machinery and mathematics to figure it out, he’s all over it.” Jim made the transition from auto mechanic to gemstone cutter, and he just loves it. Kaffi and Jim’s son, Martin, is a jeweler at the store. He works closely with customers, offering guidance and advice for newcomers who may feel intimidated by the vast selection the store offers. “We ask LOTS of questions, and Martin…is very patient and helpful,” shares customer Carrie White on the store’s Facebook page. Kaffi says her goal is to provide her customers with everything they need to create their own jewelry. That includes beads, precious stones, gemstones, natural stones, quality clasps, chains, wire, sterling silver, 14-karat gold, and gold and silver plate. “We try to have the whole gamut of whatever people are looking for,” she notes. They also teach classes on jewelry-making when the need arises. “Classes are scheduled on demand,” Kaffi explains. “We just find out what our customers want to learn and schedule a class from there.” The staff also makes customized jewelry. They’ve created engagement rings as well as jewelry for bridal parties. The store offers customized stone cutting, ring sizing, and jewelry repair, as well. When it comes to the latest trends, Kaffi listens closely to what her customers are asking for. “The style in the Midwest is typically very different than what you might see in fashion magazines,” she says. “Whether it’s here in Omaha, or if we’re in Minneapolis or Kansas City, people tell us what they want, and that’s what we try to find.” One current trend that the McNabbs have seen

is the move away from very chunky, showy Kaffi MacNabb, owner pieces to something a little more subtle. “People are definitely scaling it back a bit,” says Martin. Whether customers are looking for ready-to-wear jewelry or are interested in making their own pieces, Martin says that rings are currently the most soughtafter items. He adds that many customers are also interested in rosaries and mala beads. (A mala is a string of 108 beads that is used in prayer and meditation.) Natural stones, Martin notes, are the preferred choice for rosaries and malas. Kaffi shares that her passion for her work and her love of family comes from one of her greatest influences: her grandfather, Dan Gordman, co-founder of the Richman-Gordman stores. “He was the biggest influence in most aspects of my life,” she recalls. “We used to talk all the time about business and family and how to balance it all.” “Styles change, trends change, and we want to make sure that we get a good-quality product, as well as being desirable to our customers,” Kaffi shares. She brings back many of the store’s gemstones from Asia. “Our main concern is making sure we maintain quality. I can sleep at night because I know that what I am selling is the best.” She wants to appeal to many different customers, and she loves the variety that brings. “Our business is not cookiecutter,” says Kaffi. “It’s very unusual…there’s always something different.” It seems that customers of Papio Creek Gems appreciate the dedication to excellence that Kaffi’s grandfather instilled in her. “It’s one of my favorite places to shop,” shares customer Carrie. “Quality products and quality customer service. They are nice people who obviously love what they do. They are happy to share their craft with others.” Papio Creek Gems is located at 3412 South 144th Street, in Omaha. The store is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays (closed Sundays). For more information, please call the store at 402-935-4367. The Biggest and Best Investing in the S&P 500
By George Morgan
Stock market indexes were developed to give the public a sense of which direction the market is headed. The oldest market index is the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which was first published in 1897. At that time, it consisted of 13 railroad stocks. Every weekday afternoon, news of the Dow was distributed in a flyer to financial types working in downtown Manhattan. Several decades later, that flyer became The Wall Street Journal. It was not until 1957 that the next major market index, the S&P 500, was developed and offered for general consumption. Participants in 401(k) plans are faced with the daunting task of choosing where to invest their retirement dollars from a list of mutual funds provided by their employer. Most of these people have no investment education or experience, and yet the growth of their retirement account depends on how well they choose their funds. They need a solution that is simple, lowmaintenance, cost-effective, and reasonably safe. That solution is an S&P 500 index fund. An index fund is a mutual fund that replicates a specific index. It accomplishes this by buying and holding all the stocks in that index in the same proportion as they are in the index. It does not time the market by buying and selling its holdings to enhance investment performance. Compare this to conventional, actively managed mutual funds, where a money manager trades
stocks to “beat the market.” This frequent trading is costly and sometimes counterproductive. Studies show that, in the long run, actively managed mutual funds underperform the market, while the index funds match the market. There are several elements that make the S&P 500 unique and, thus, a good fit for many 401(k) participants. The stocks that are included in the S&P 500 are chosen by a formula that considers various financial data points. Such things as profit levels, total sales, market cap, and number of employees are used to determine which stocks to include in the index. The result is a list of the 500 biggest and best publicly traded companies in the United States. When a company’s financial attributes decline and it falls below the index standards, that company is removed from the index. The net impact is that the companies used to calculate the S&P 500 are the biggest and the best that the nation has to offer. They represent 85 percent of the market’s total value of $26 trillion. The S&P 500 is a market cap weighted index. A market cap is simply the number of shares outstanding multiplied by the

share price. What this means is that the biggest companies in the index have the most influence over the index. For example, Apple has a market cap of $800 billion and has a weighting of 4.37. So, when Apple has a good day, the index tends to have a good day. Stocks numbered 400 to 500 on the S&P 500 list have a weighting of less than one. So, when they have a bad day but Apple has a good day, the market still tends to go up. We all remember our parents telling us “don’t put all your eggs in one basket,” and that can be very good advice, so long as you understand how it relates to investment. Many 401(k) plan participants are reluctant to put all their 401(k) dollars in an S&P 500 index fund because, in their mind, the fund is one single investment. This is not the case—shareholders of an S&P 500 index fund own shares of each one of the 500 companies on the list. The calculation of the Dow Jones Industrial Average includes the dividends paid by companies in the index; the calculation of the S&P 500 does not. Historically, the dividend return on the S&P 500 is in the 3 percent range. When you own an S&P 500 index fund, you own stock in all 500 companies. You are therefore eligible to receive those dividends on a quarterly basis, which enhances your investment return. Most index funds are set up so that when the dividend dollars are paid, they are automatically reinvested in your mutual fund. When you invest your dividends when the market is going down, you are buying at discounted prices. That’s my advice: Put your 401(k) dollars in an S&P 500 index fund. But if you won’t take investment advice from me, will you take it from Warren Buffett? He has left instructions for the people dealing with his estate after his death to put his wife’s money in an S&P 500 index fund. That’s a pretty strong endorsement!

The Green Thumb
Time for the Equinox The Waning Days of Summer By Sharon Knierim
As we approach the equinox, when summer slowly changes its routine and becomes early autumn, some of us breathe a sigh of relief. With the coming of shorter days and cooler weather, the heyday of gardening and weeding and the rushing here and rushing there to ensure proper amounts of water are passing quickly. The intense heat and humidity of summer weather are gradually replaced by more gardener-friendly weather and good conditions for outdoor comfort. It is definitely noticeable that today’s flower and bloom will be gone tomorrow. Plants large and small have the ability to recognize the coming of winter and offer up the first hints of autumn—the same flower that smiles today, tomorrow will be dying, as the poem goes. We humans make an effort to adjust, as well, but it seems that just as we acclimate ourselves to these new conditions, Mother Nature changes her mind and turns up the heat again. But as surely as the world turns, autumn will come. Some gardeners really are saddened by the end of summer. These are the folks who love “living outdoors.” However, these folks do realize that all is not lost simply because we turn the calendar from August to September and a few leaves turn brown, or red,
or orange. There is, after all, abundant beauty to be found in the autumn garden. A thoughtful and careful gardener will have planned fall-blooming perennials to extend the beauty of her garden. Of course, one of the first plants we think about in the category of autumn bloom and color is the chrysanthemum. Mums are available in a wide range of colors, varying from white to red to orange to yellow—even shades of purple and rust. And they’re so easy to grow! There is virtually no reason not to include this wonderful plant in any garden. After a season of growing, mums can be split and multiplied simply by plugging them into another location in the landscape. Nothing is more beautiful than multicolored drifts of chrysanthemums! Don’t be shy about asking for a starter plant, if you don’t have any mums yet. Many gardeners consider it a really sincere compliment

when someone asks for a starter, and we’re happy to share our plants in trade or simply as a gift to other gardeners. Mums often thrive in the most unfriendly environment, which makes them a popular choice in soil where not much else is willing to grow. Be sure to keep your mums pinched back until at least the Fourth of July so that they do not bloom too early. Also, keeping them trimmed back (gently, not severely) gives them a nice shape instead of a leggy look. One word of caution for newcomers to the world of chrysanthemums: don’t expect success if planting potted mums from a flower shop. The results are mixed on this. Sometimes, they will be successful, but they are often disappointing. Another popular autumn bloomer is the aster. There still seems to be some confusion regarding what exactly is an aster, so a bit of research might be required before adding them to the garden. Wild asters are often found by the dozens along roadsides. Don’t attempt to dig these up and bring them home. Leave them at the roadside so others can enjoy them. There are many species of the aster genus, so do a little homework and find the species you like best before adding them to your landscape. Both chrysanthemums and asters will bloom heartily until a devastating frost puts an end to their fun for the season. Cover them lightly with a bit of mulch to protect them from the icy fingers of winter, and they will return next spring. One annual worth mentioning for autumn beauty and color is the vigorous marigold. While it is true that the marigold will not return next spring, this is still certainly a worthwhile plant. Its seeds can be saved and successfully planted in the next growing season. Simply allow the seeds to dry down completely and store in an airtight container until ready to plant. Cooler temperatures seem to stimulate the marigold and turn its green foliage into a somewhat magical color. The plant seems to grow bigger each day, and its blooms are wonderful. For a really good show in the autumn garden, mingle marigolds with mums and asters. It’s a great way to end the growing season with a bang! Editor’s Note: Sharon Knierim has been a Master Gardener since 2003 through Iowa State University. She lives on a small farm in western Iowa and looks forward to sharing her passion for gardening each month with her green-thumbed reader friends. WE

The Return of Boutique Shopping Large Value in a Small Shop
By Ashley Anderson
Although some people greatly enjoy some types of shopping, it can also be stressful—and I’m not just talking about Black Friday. Shopping has become very tasking. What happened to walking into a store and working with a courteous associate to find what you needed? These days, shopping often entails wrangling a giant cart through a store the size of a small city, only to end up scanning your own items at a cantankerous self-checkout station. It’s probably fair to say that most people would prefer better customer service and less distraction during their shopping experience. Just thinking about going to a mall or department store can cause quite a panic, with all the people, traffic, and mass quantities of generic products. Sometimes, it’s best to pass on the one-stop shop and head for a small boutique that can help you find exactly what you want, calming your nerves in the process. A boutique can be described as a typically small business that serves a discerning or specific clientele. Boutiques provide specialized services or niche products in a more intimate setting. Boutique-style businesses are becoming newly popular with investment firms, beauty salons, and even hotels, but when it comes to shopping, boutiques have always fit the bill. Boutique shops typically serve a particular segment of the market and provide unique, high-trend products that department stores may not be able to provide. These products might include women’s clothing, men’s clothing, baby clothing, home decor, art, or jewelry and accessories. Boutiques will commonly focus on just one or two categories, and they will likely have a greater variety within that category than a department store typically would. In addition to a more diverse selection of products, there are many reasons that shopping in boutiques can be beneficial. Local small business retailers and boutique shops typically work directly with a select few suppliers, so business owners are very close to the quality and selection of products that they sell in their stores. Prices may be slightly higher in a boutique because they don’t get the volume discounts of a superstore, but they often have a selection of better products and access to some unique finds. Because boutique retailers buy in smaller quantities, they are able to provide a larger variety of items. This gives the shopper a product that is different from everyone else’s. In addition, a boutique retailer’s close relationship with her products and vendors allows her to provide shoppers with a personalized experience. Not only can boutique associates spend more time with you when you’re in the store, but they can also provide a personalized shopping experience away from the storefront. If you are looking for a specific item, a boutique owner can typically reach out to her suppliers to see if they can find what you want. Also, being a small
56
September 2017
boutique retailer allows for a more personal relationship with customers. The owner can provide personalized suggestions to help you make the best purchase. And when new merchandise comes in, you could be the first person she calls to come check it out and take it home. Boutique shops typically go above and beyond when it comes to customer service. As a brick-andmortar store, a boutique typically does not rely on online business significantly (if they sell online at all). Therefore, customer service and a hands-on shopping experience are key components to small business success. In the store, boutique associates can pay more attention to shoppers simply because the place is not as crowded as a department store. They can help you pair items for outfits, shop for the perfect gift, or even match clothing or decor that you bring in from home. Because boutiques are so often local businesses, owners typically have a close relationship with the surrounding community. Not only do they contribute to the local economy, they are also more likely to give back to those in their community by supporting local events or causes. Buying from a local retailer helps to support these missions, in addition to stimulating local economic growth. Most of the money (including taxes) that you spend in a small boutique stays in your community. To find boutique shops or retailers near you, check with your local small business association or chamber of commerce. They will be able to provide a listing of small businesses registered in your city. Local publications (like this one!) also provide advertisements for boutique shops. It’s likely that you know someone who owns a small business or boutique shop. The next time you’re heading out to shop, skip the big box store and check out a boutique instead. Their business and your community depend on your purchase. Sources for this article included: www.usatoday.com, www.sba.gov, and www.forbes.com. WE

Triba Health and Wellness Clinic Make Your Whole Body Feel and Look Better
By Marge Shoemaker
There are many reasons you might want to slim down. Maybe you’re taking a winter vacation and want to be in your best beach shape. Perhaps you have a class reunion coming up. There may be a wedding in the near future. Whatever the reason, you want to trim down and tone up. Traditional methods haven’t worked. You’re left with frustration and despair. If this sounds like you, call Triba Health and Wellness Clinic. Dr. Tom Triba (Tree-ba) established his business nearly 30 years ago. A graduate of the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, he interned at the world-renowned Gonstead Clinic in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin. Initially focusing on chiropractic problems, his interests gradually evolved. For the past 10 years, he has concentrated on general health and wellness, using non-invasive techniques to treat all parts of the body. “Chiropractic care helps many of the body’s ills,” Dr. Triba explains. “It emphasizes how the parts of our body are interconnected…how trouble in one part can be indicated by pain in another part.” Your feet bear the weight of all your body problems. When your feet hurt, your whole body is affected. Triba Health and Wellness Clinic can provide custom-designed foot orthotics intended to support the arches in your feet. They also have an Erchonia FX635 machine designed to ease the pain of plantar fasciitis. With this treatment, three lasers work together to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Patient Doreen S. reports that she experienced “immediate relief following one treatment after years of pain pills and surgery.” The Erchonia laser is also used to treat chronic pain, postoperative pain, and many other conditions. At Triba Health and Wellness Clinic, weight loss is accomplished through the doctor-supervised ChiroThin program. The ChiroThin brochure describes the program as “a very low calorie diet in combination with dietary modification, nutritional support formulas, and weekly doctor supervision.” Patient Wanda reports that the ChiroThin program is all it is advertised to be. She tells us the fat seemed to melt away. “I can wear a blazer now that I haven’t been able to wear for 25 years!” she proudly proclaims. Allergies are the body’s negative reaction to harmless substances, food, or stimuli, and they can cause significant discomfort. At Triba Health and Wellness Clinic, allergies are treated with Advanced Allergy Therapeutics (AAT). This program “treats the reactions from most forms of allergies and sensitivities…by treating the problem at its source, by retraining the body to no longer react inappropriately.” Conditions in the digestive and
respiratory systems, adverse skin conditions, and headaches or migraines, often aggravated by allergies or sensitivities, are eased. Patient Karen T. reports that she has fought reactions to allergies for years. When other treatments had little effect, she tried AAT. “Thanks to Dr. Triba, I can truly say: ‘At 65, I’m coming alive!’” she raves. For body contouring, the Zerona device is the method of choice at Triba Health and Wellness Clinic. This device works by painlessly emptying fat cells. The body then eliminates the fat through the lymphatic system. The result is loss of fat and inches with no pain, no surgery, no bruising, and no recovery time. Clients rave about Zerona body contouring. Arlene J. reports that she went on a trip with her “fit sis” looking like a new person. “My jelly roll is gone, and my energy is up,” she raves. “I’ll be back for more!” Client Laurie “thoroughly enjoyed the treatments in fat and weight loss” and highly recommends Dr. Triba and his staff. Kristine M. shares that the rapid results motivated her to work out and eat right. The Venus Concept is another available treatment, used to tighten skin and contour the body. Holly H. reports “instant results in facial contouring and wrinkle reduction” following her treatment. “The many procedures we perform in the office keep us fresh and focused,” Dr. Triba concludes. “It’s a great dynamic to have wide and varied options for non-invasive treatment. With a marvelous staff—Karen Casper and Rhonda Duffield—our goal is to provide excellent health care that is safe, non-invasive, and affordable.” What’s on the horizon at Triba Health and Wellness Clinic? A proprietary treatment to help people quit smoking! Triba Health and Wellness Clinic is located at 2720 South 114th Street, in Omaha. Preparing Your Vehicle for Winter Weather Don’t Get Caught Out in the Cold! By Julie Kuntze
Back-to-school sales in July always startle me. Didn’t summer just start? Now, Christmas trees are setting up in every retail store. Being prepared is generally a good thing, of course, so early autumn is an excellent time to start thinking about winterizing your car. Routine maintenance is a “must-do” before temperatures begin to drop. The National Safety Council (NSC) recommends having a trained mechanic do a thorough check of your vehicle’s basic systems, such as the ignition, wiring, spark plugs, air and fuel filters, and distributor. Proper fluid levels (such as oil and power steering fluid) should be confirmed and either changed or topped off, as needed. Drivers should be sure all vehicle lights are in good working order, from the headlights and brake lights to turn signals and interior lights. Be sure floor mats are the right size and are installed correctly. If you don’t have floor mats, consider purchasing custom all-weather mats, which provide a strong barrier between the floorboard and melting snow and ice. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reminds us that when outdoor temperatures drop, battery power does, too. They recommend having a technician check your vehicle battery for adequate voltage, amperage, and reserve capacity. Cable connections should be inspected and

tightened, and the charging system itself should also be tested. While a warmed-up engine is better suited for driving, you should never start your vehicle in an enclosed space because of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. “In fact, the Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that a car running in an attached garage is never safe, even with the garage door open,” notes the National Safety Council. Antifreeze levels should also be checked carefully before winter. Ask your mechanic to check the system for leaks, and be aware that cold temperatures can make the rubber parts brittle and dry. Examine gaskets and hoses when the engine is cold; they should be pliable and soft. Hoses and belts should also be inspected by a trained technician and should be replaced if they are showing signs of age or abnormal wear and tear. When temperatures begin to drop, be sure to fill your wiper fluid reservoir with a high-quality product that contains a deicer. Replace worn wiper blades, and consider installing
www.womensedition.com
heavy-duty wipers if your area experiences severe winter conditions. Be sure to carry a snow brush and ice scraper, and use them! The wiper motor can be overloaded trying to remove thick snow or ice that should have been scraped off. A trained professional should also check your braking system. It is important to know whether you have antilock brakes on your vehicle or not, as it will dictate the best method to use when slowing down or stopping on slippery roads. If you have antilock brakes, you should apply firm, continuous pressure on the pedal to slow or stop the vehicle without locking up the wheels. If you do not have antilock brakes, it may be necessary to pump the pedal instead. Tires should be checked for proper tread depth, inflation, and abnormal wear. Snow tires are a good option for vehicles that will be driving in winter weather conditions; they can be installed now and changed out again in the spring. Snow tires have a deeper tread and wear down quicker than all-season tires, but you want to have them in place before you need them. You might also consider tire chains (or snow chains). Most states have specific laws around the use of chains or

spikes, and they can vary widely, from being required in some areas to being prohibited except during certain months of the year. Weather, particularly in the winter, can change in an instant. One final and important step you shouldn’t put off is making sure your vehicle is stocked with essential safety provisions. Organizations like the Red Cross and the National Safety Council advise that drivers include a small tool kit, first aid kit, ice scraper, snow brush, traction aids (like a bag of sand or cat litter), jumper cables, blankets, and snacks (like canned fruit or nuts). A change of clothes (including extra mittens, socks, and hats), bottled water, and emergency flares or reflective triangles are also good to have on hand. It’s a disorienting time of year, when you might have to shop in a store where the holiday bows and tinsel are sitting next to Halloween pumpkins and masks. It’s a great idea to get your car ready for winter while the grass is green and the temperatures are high—before you know it, snow and ice will begin to fly! Are Your Hormones Out of Alignment? Treatment Strategies to Get You Back on Track
By Julianne Dunn, RN, BSN, JD
Back in the day, women put up with the “change of life” because they had no alternative. Thankfully, that is no longer the case! Today’s women (and men) can use many strategies to combat the unpleasant symptoms of hormonal imbalance. Hormones are chemical “messengers” that affect mood, digestion, glucose metabolism, cognition, weight balance, fertility, reproductive capacity, libido, sleep and wakefulness, and thousands of other functions of the normal human body. When hormone levels get out of whack, there can be no end of mischief. Most women experience drastic hormonal changes in their 40s and 50s, as they approach menopause. Hair loss or thinning, sleep disruption, emotional irritability, excessive sweating (that is, hot flashes), sudden food cravings, indigestion, mood swings, breast changes, and weight gain become part of the interior landscape. Not too long ago, the hormonal shifts of middle age were considered just a women’s problem—there was no such thing as “male menopause.” These days, it seems like every other television commercial is for a product to treat low testosterone! Doctors now recognize that men experience “andropause,” an agerelated hormonal shift. Symptoms in men are likely to occur at about the same age as in women, but they are often not so sudden in onset. Because hormones control many of the same body systems in men and women, there’s a lot of overlap in symptoms. Weight gain, loss of bone and muscle mass, low libido, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, depression, hair loss, and breast enlargement, along with testicular wasting, can be seen in men. People younger than age 40 can experience hormonal imbalances, but these are most often the results of an illness or condition that must be evaluated, diagnosed, and treated by a physician. Premature menopause in girls or young women or premature andropause in boys or young men are pathological conditions that may be symptoms of serious disease. They should not be treated like agerelated menopause or andropause. Many problems are associated with common hormonal imbalances. Estrogen dominance can cause changes in sleep patterns, weight, and appetite, as well as higher perceived stress and slowed metabolism. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) can lead to infertility, weight gain, higher risk for diabetes, acne, and abnormal hair growth. Low estrogen levels often lead to low libido, menstrual irregularity, changes in mood, and reproductive difficulties. Low testosterone can result in erectile dysfunction, fatigue, weight gain, loss of muscle mass, and changes in mood. Imbalances in hormones other than estrogen and testosterone can cause trouble, too. Hypothyroidism,
60
September 2017
for example, can cause weight gain, slowed metabolism, fatigue, anxiety, irritability, digestive issues, and irregular periods. Insulin deficiency is well known to lead to diabetes, which may bring a host of problems, including weight gain, nerve damage, vision loss, fatigue, breathing difficulties, dry mouth, and skin problems. An imbalance of adrenaline might be adrenal fatigue, which may come with reproductive difficulties, fatigue, muscle pain, sleep problems, “brain fog,” and anxiety or depression. If you’re experiencing some of these symptoms, you should let your physician know. She may order testing of your saliva, blood, or urine to determine your current hormone levels and identify the best treatment for you. Treatment for hormone imbalance often consists of hormone replacement therapy, in which supplements are taken to make up for the lowered levels of hormones produced by the body. Some practitioners advocate bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, which means that the hormone in the product is chemically identical to the hormone produced in the human body. Bioidentical hormones are sometimes included in traditional hormone therapy but are often individually prepared in a compounding pharmacy to the specifications of each patient’s physician. Because hormone replacement therapy does come with other health risks, you should thoroughly discuss the risks and benefits to you with your physician before choosing this treatment option. Many alternative (or complementary) strategies may help address the symptoms of hormone imbalance. For example, eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, reducing stress levels, getting more sleep, and limiting your intake of caffeine and alcohol can all help you feel better. Some herbs and supplements, including ashwagandha, holy basil, rhodiola, and amla, may be beneficial. Consult with your doctor and pharmacist before taking dietary supplements to treat the symptoms of hormonal imbalance. Restoring hormones to their proper levels brings relief for many people suffering from the troublesome symptoms of hormonal imbalance. If you’re not feeling like your usual, vigorous self, talk to your doctor to see if hormone imbalance might be the culprit. Oktoberfest Beer is Just the Beginning
By Jackie Williams
Let’s test your German: sauerkraut, bratwurst, strudel, lederhosen, dirndl, O’zapft is! Did you miss that last one? It means, “It is tapped!” Those are the opening words of what is considered the greatest folk festival in the world: Oktoberfest. The annual festival has been held in Munich, Germany, since the marriage between Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen on October 12, 1810. The celebration included festivities like music, eating, and drinking, and it concluded with a horse race in the meadow five days later. It was so popular with the public that the following year started the Oktoberfest tradition, which now continues around the world. Slight changes have been made…like the wiener dog races that have replaced the traditional horse races at some Oktoberfests, but the festivities go on. Have you noticed that Oktoberfest seems to begin in September? That’s because the festivities were prolonged and moved up into September, allowing for better weather conditions during the outdoor festival. Typically, the last weekend of Oktoberfest ends in October. If you are able to attend the official festival in Munich, which falls between September 16th and October 3rd this year, you should plan for every type of weather. The daytime can still be
warm, but by the time you come out of the beer tents at night, it can be dark, damp, and cold—even raining. Dress appropriately, which may include renting or buying a traditional outfit. You don’t want to be the party pooper wearing regular clothes, do you? Germany is a great destination to visit for Oktoberfest, if you have the time. Munich is the capital of Bavaria and lies at the foot of the German Alps. After Berlin, Munich is the second most popular destination in the country; the annual event brings over six million people to town. See Old World architecture, visit parks, experience the culture, and, of course, drink the beer! The total beer consumption during Oktoberfest is a staggering 1,430,000 gallons! Traditional Munich brewers set up beer tents on the festival grounds with seating for thousands. Beer is served by the liter, along with traditional foods like huge soft pretzels, bratwurst, roasted pork knuckles, sauerkraut balls, potato pancakes, and strudel. There are parades with floats, people dressed in folk costumes, rides, music, dancing, games, and more. You can choose ›››

to go tent hopping all day long or go back several times to visit one tent per day. A lot of the tents require reservations for a table, so check with your hotel concierge to see if she reserves a table for their guests. If you can’t get overseas, consider the next official Oktoberfest—in Frankenmuth, Michigan. “Lord Mayor Christian Ude and the German Parliament from Munich gave an official proclamation in 1996,” states the official website at www.FrankenmuthFestivals.com. The 2017 festivities will take place September 14th–17th. Frankenmuth’s Oktoberfest includes the world-famous Hofbrauhaus beer, exported from Munich, as the official beer sponsor. Frankenmuth is known for its Bavarianstyle architecture, culture, and heritage; the city’s German roots will give visitors to the festival an authentic experience, complete with entertainment and food choices. There are several bands and an annual wiener dog race to check out while you are there. Frankenmuth may claim the official Oktoberfest in the United States, but it’s not the biggest. For that, you’ll need to head to Ohio and check out Oktoberfest Zinzinnati. From September 15th–17th, 2017, visitors to Cincinnati can attend the largest Oktoberfest festival in the States, with an attendance of over 500,000 people each year. The event kicks off with the Running of the Wieners and then the Gemuetlichkeit (or Goodwill Games) that evening. Oktoberfest Zinzinnati even holds the world record for the World’s Largest Chicken Dance (48,000 participants), a favorite event that you can participate in every year. If you want to stray a little farther from home, cross the border into Ontario to attend Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest, the “Greatest Bavarian Festival” in Canada. The festival runs from October 6th–14th this year. Besides the normal festivities, the area presents great culinary events before, during, and after the festival. There is also an annual Oktoberfest Golf Experience at the private and prestigious Deer Ridge Golf Club. Wherever you live, there will be some type of Oktoberfest festivities available in September and October. Oktoberfest is a festival for fun! Don’t worry about what seems like a focus on beer—Oktoberfest is family-friendly, and there are plenty of options for those who do not drink beer. You never know, you might like it so much that you do end up adding lederhosen and dirndl to your wardrobe! Enterprising Ideas
When You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know Ask SCORE
By Marge Shoemaker
Do you have a dream? Do you want to go into business for yourself but aren’t sure how to start? Do you have an idea for a service or invention but aren’t sure how to promote it? Do you have an existing business and are struggling? Do you have an entrepreneurial mindset but need guidance? SCORE is the place to go. SCORE is an organization made up of volunteers certified in nearly every aspect of business. Some are retired, some are still working; all want to share their knowledge and experience to help beginners in business. SCORE is supported by the Small Business Administration (SBA). Their primary office is located at 108th and Maple, in the SBA building. There is a satellite office offering workspace in the Rail and Commerce Building in the Commerce Village, at 10th and Pacific. Pauline Stark has been the chairwoman for SCORE since 2016. She is passionate about women succeeding in business. “SCORE has been predominately male for the past several decades,” she notes. She is working to shift the balance by recruiting women with the ability to help others…those who want to give back and share what they have learned. “It’s the nature of most women to be nurturing, to want to help,” Pauline says. She knows that women have professional strengths and an ability to understand the unique perspective of other entrepreneurial women. SCORE currently has 70 volunteer certified mentors who are ready, willing, and able to share their ideas and expertise. Pauline recalls one client who called and asked about starting her own small business. She was asked to bring in her business plan and talk to one of the counselors. “What’s a business plan?” the client asked. An appointment was arranged with a mentor, who explained what was needed in a business plan and why it was necessary to have one. When the mentor was sure the client understood what was needed, the client was given an assignment to work on her plan and then bring it in for review and assistance. Marilyn Riley is the SCORE secretary and official greeter—she’s the first person a prospective client meets when she comes in. Marilyn gives each client a packet of information and a checklist to get her started. After an introductory interview, Marilyn matches the client with a mentor. At the subsequent consultation, the mentor and the client together define the client’s path to success. “We feel it’s important for the clients to do most of the work and let us be guides,” explains Pauline. “They will more effectively learn the details of their business than if we did the work. This gives them ownership of the whole process.”
66
September 2017
Because she is a business owner herself, Pauline is aware of the knowledge needed for a start-up. She is also well aware of the occasional need for help and guidance on short notice. “We had one call,” she recalls, “where the client expressed her need for help getting a loan—tomorrow!” The SCORE volunteer helped the client put together enough information to get her loan. They then helped her set up a timeline to make her business work. Many new business owner/operators need advice on how to manage their finances…how to budget both time and money. They are advised on how to create a beneficial structure for their business. “One thing many women need to remember,” Pauline advises, “is to keep their personal lives separate from their business.” She knows how difficult that can be and assures each client that SCORE is there to help when things seem impossible. “The longer they work at it, the stronger they get,” Pauline notes with a smile. One of the greatest challenges Pauline faces is changing the public’s idea of SCORE. “Many people don’t know who we are. They think they can’t be helped, or they’re afraid we’ll take their idea and develop it ourselves.” SCORE doesn’t charge for the mentor’s time. They truly want to help new businesses. “That’s SCORE’s primary focus!” Pauline says enthusiastically. Another challenge is clients who miss appointments without calling. “Our people are volunteers…their time is wasted when someone doesn’t show up for an individual appointment or one of our workshops.” The volunteers also benefit from their time with SCORE. Prostate Cancer Awareness Month Screening to Keep Our Guys Healthy By Linda Barnes
I’m not sure how many men read Women’s Edition, but I know a lot of women do. We want to keep the men in our lives healthy! Encouraging men of a certain age to be screened for prostate cancer is an important step toward that goal. Prostate cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death among men, behind lung cancer and colorectal cancer. The good news is that blood tests, physical exams, and other state-of-the-art technology make early detection possible. Early detection, before cancer has spread, is a key to increased survival time. Please note that I said men “of a certain age” should be screened. Several risk factors determine when prostate cancer screening should begin. One of the most significant risk factors is age; the chance of developing prostate cancer increases substantially after age 50. However, other components of risk are weighed, as well. A man’s race, family history, and geographic location all play a role. African American men are at higher risk than men of other racial backgrounds for developing prostate cancer. The disease is more prevalent in North America, northwestern Europe, Australia, and the Caribbean islands; it is less common in Asia, Africa, and Central and South America. Having a father or brother with prostate cancer doubles one’s risk. The highest risk is associated with multiple incidences in a family, particularly if cancer occurred

at an early age. Some genetic testing may be helpful in establishing one’s risk. Inherited gene mutations such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 may increase the risk of prostate cancer. Once the risk level is determined, the doctor will recommend an appropriate age for first screening. According to the American Cancer Society, men with average risk should generally begin screening at age 50, men with higher risk should begin at age 45, and men with the highest risk of prostate cancer should begin screening at age 40. The doctor will recommend the frequency of testing, based on PSA levels, risk, and other factors. Screening is usually a combination of a digital rectal exam (DRE) and testing a blood sample for the level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), which is normally present in small amounts in a healthy prostate. While the PSA test is a more accurate predictor, the physical exam can spot abnormalities even when PSA levels are normal. Both of the tests together provide the best screening. What are the symptoms of prostate cancer? That’s the problem— usually, there are no warning signs of early prostate cancer, making

screening the best strategy for early detection. However, any urinary symptoms (burning, increased frequency) should be reported to a physician, as they may indicate non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate. If PSA levels are elevated or the doctor detects some abnormality during DRE, further tests may be needed—some options include imaging or biopsy. There are a number of specialized PSA tests, as well. It is a complex issue, so a reputable urologist should be consulted for guidance. Multiparametric MRI (a combination of imaging procedures) may help pinpoint the location of cancer within the prostate so fewer biopsy samples are needed. It also helps differentiate between aggressive cancer that needs prompt treatment and slow-growing, non-aggressive cancer for which treatment can be delayed. In some cases, MRI can be performed noninvasively by having the patient wear an external imaging antenna (as opposed to using an endorectal probe). When prostate cancer is diagnosed, both the grade and the stage of the cancer will influence treatment options. Grade is a measure of aggressiveness, while stage indicates the extent of cancer within the prostate and whether it has spread to other tissues. Age plays an important role in treatment decisions. In elderly men with slow-growing cancer, the risks of treatment may be greater than the cancer itself. A younger man with an aggressive cancer may opt for more aggressive treatment. Treatments might include hormone therapy, radiation, and surgery. Hormone treatment aims to shrink or slow the growth of the cancer. Radiation can be beamed to the cancer from outside the body or from within through tiny radioactive “seeds” placed in the prostate. Surgical techniques are continually being improved. Less invasive procedures and greater accuracy through such things as imaging and robotics make surgery a good option in some cases. Getting our guys in for prostate screening at an appropriate age is a big step in the right direction. In addition, good general health is believed to lower the risk of prostate cancer—and it never hurts to steer our loved ones toward better eating habits and regular exercise! September is prostate cancer awareness month. Make sure your guys are aware of when they should be screened. Cuddly Critters
A Fish Tale Setting Up a Home Aquarium By Kathy Glow
Fish lovers have long known that owning aquatic creatures can benefit one’s health. Watching fish swim gently back and forth can reduce stress and anxiety, promote relaxation, improve mood, and lower blood pressure and heart rate. Furthermore, aquariums encourage learning, imagination, and creativity. Starting a home aquarium is not a task to be taken lightly. Just as you would research what type of dog would best fit your family, you need to learn about which fish fare better together and thrive in which kinds of environments. You need to consider which fish are the hardiest and the easiest to care for. And, since fish are social animals, knowing which breeds can live peacefully together is important, as well. Before you choose between a cold-water tank and a heated one, you need to do a little research on your favorite fish. Some of the more popular cold-water fish include goldfish, tetras, and white clouds. Some popular freshwater breeds that prefer a heated environment are guppies, mollies, platies, danios, kuhli loaches, and sword tails. A betta is also a very popular fish, though males especially have been known to fight with other bettas. In the wild, some fish are born in salt water and go to fresh water to spawn (or vice versa). However, mixing fresh and saltwater fish in a home aquarium is generally not recommended because of all the work it takes to maintain optimal conditions for both types of fish. Maintaining a saltwater aquarium takes more work because the fish are more sensitive to changes in the water and their surroundings, as well as the pH level of the water. Many freshwater fish can survive just fine on flake food, whereas saltwater fish prefer a “meatier” diet consisting of brine fish and shrimp. Some popular saltwater fish include the butterfly fish, fire fish, dottybacks, wrasses, and pink- or blue-spotted watchman gobies. Tangs and Blennies are popular but can be aggressive to their own kind. Once you choose a tank that will fit your designated space and provide enough room for the fish you have chosen, you will need a filtration system and a light source. Both help promote the health of your fish. If you have live plants or algae in your tank, you need to manage the light to avoid overgrowth of the plants. Some fish are shy and like to have places to rest or hide in the tank. Placing objects in the tank can add visual interest, but avoid overcrowding the tank with decorations. Too many objects makes a tank hard to clean and makes it hard to see your beautiful fish. Be aware of the materials that you put in the tank—copper, paint, plastics, and untreated wood may all be harmful to your fish. The fish expert at the pet store can guide you. You will need a water testing kit to check the pH

level of the water and supplies to clean and “cycle” your tank. Cycling your tank involves bringing the water condition to a level that is safe before introducing new fish. Learn what type of food your breed of fish prefers, and always avoid overfeeding or underfeeding them. Do not stock too many fish in a small tank. Crowded conditions can make fish aggressive. Some experienced fish owners may desire a tank filled with exotic fish—the beautiful colors and elaborate fins are definitely a conversation piece. Before you consider this, be sure to check your state’s policies regarding ownership of exotic animals. Many of these fish have been stolen from the wild, and some may be on an endangered species list. Also remember that fish of any kind are not disposable pets. Introducing an exotic breed to a pond, river, or lake may harm the ecosystem (and the fish). Exotic fish can be extremely expensive to purchase (a golden carp can sell for two million dollars!). Owning an exotic fish can be lifetime commitment, as well. Most fish live from two to five years, but some exotic fish, like discus, pleco, koi, and arowana, can live for decades. Some grow rather large, as well; for example, the freshwater stingray can grow up to three feet. The primary use of a fish tank is as a home for your fish, but a fish tank can also be a beautiful decorative piece. Some people place it on a table or in a wall. Some of the more serious and creative aquarists have even placed tanks inside furniture, in their kitchen islands, or as railings in their homes. No matter what type of fish you prefer, one thing is true: fish make any home or office environment a more pleasing and peaceful space. Visualize Your Dreams Vibrate In Harmony

some crazy passion to want to accomplish that which you visualize.
Sounds plausible. (And that bit of wisdom always cracks me up.) It does seem obvious. But let’s explore the idea of failure further.

“If at first you don’t succeed, failure may be your style.” —Quentin Crisp I almost feel a bit bad for people who seem to believe that about themselves. Of course, I don’t, because it is a choice. It’s always a matter of continuing on in the direction of your dreams. Failure or success is a choice. You have to hold onto your vision and get yourself excited about getting there. You need to have your own reasons or motives to act—that is motivation. And you really have to work with this every single day. “People say that motivation doesn’t last.
