2 2 OUR YEAR OF IMPACT
MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADERSHIP
2020 has been a year like no other. As the COVID-19 pandemic raged through the world, the importance of our WMM Community has never been more critical. Our small team pivoted to remote workspaces and directed their energies to support our members by sharing resources and spotlighting leaders needing crucial assistance. We urged our community to be responsive to their grantees’ urgent needs, shed traditional grantmaking practices, and increase support for women and girls.
We stepped into our values of being bold, curious, and learning in community. We supported shelters with PPE and we challenged ourselves and others to listen and learn from those around us and take in new perspectives. We also called upon the broader philanthropic sector to examine how it can and should evolve its approaches to be a more positive force for change.
As this pandemic has exacerbated the systemic inequities facing women and girls in every country, threatening their safety, health, and opportunity, we stepped up. We dove into our Wednesday series, we learned about powerful storytelling in our Philanthropic Leadership Program, and we connected via Zoom. Our brave Summit speakers inspired us to address the rising economic insecurity, climate damage, violence, systemic racism, and political unrest that have tested the stability of democracies worldwide. In intimate spaces, we shared our own experiences as we healed and supported each other.
Sarah Haacke Byrd, Executive Director.
S. Mona Sinha, Board Chair.
We recognize that today we find ourselves at a tipping point in the fight for gender equality.
The uncertainty and complexity of this year called on WMM to be our boldest and most ambitious. We answered this call with our new Give Bold, Get Equal Campaign, which launched in conjunction with our Virtual Power of Us Summit. Since September, we have secured $95 million in commitments towards our goal to mobilize a minimum of $100 million in new funds for organizations working to improve the lives of women and girls. We thank you for bringing your leadership to the forefront at this time.
As 2020 comes to a close and we reflect upon the enormity of the year, we recognize that what is needed today is different from what will be asked of us tomorrow. In 2021, we will bring forth the same blend of possibility, hope, and determination that we tapped into during the early days of the crisis. As we continue the journey to understand how philanthropy can evolve to support the transformation of inequitable systems, we will leverage our community’s collective strength, networks, and voice to ensure the fight for gender equality moves forward. Our expanded programming for next year reflects this purpose.
We are excited to share this report with our annual review and roadmap for the future. We invite you to celebrate our collective accomplishments and hope you will join us.
In collaboration, on the important journey ahead.

OUR STORY From Campaign to Community
Our history as an organization is proof that when women give boldly, others will follow. The idea for Women Moving Millions was sparked in 2007, when our founders catalyzed a major funding initiative to raise the bar on women’s giving by asking women to make bold million dollar commitments to strengthen the capacity of women’s funds. This campaign, launched in partnership with the Women’s Funding Network, made history by securing a groundbreaking $181 million in commitments from more than 100 donors for over 40 women’s funds.
Recognizing the need to mobilize greater resources for women and girls did not end with the campaign,
a passionate and committed group of women philanthropists came together to form an ongoing organization dedicated to catalyzing resources to achieve gender equality.
Today, WMM is a thriving global membership community of more than 340 high-net-worth women from 16 countries who have committed nearly $800 million to organizations and initiatives benefiting women and girls. Our members are some of the most engaged, purposeful, and powerful philanthropists of our time. Together, we represent a new era of resources by and for women, using the power of our voice and influence to inspire others to invest with a gender lens.
2020 A YEAR OF IMPACT
In 2019, Women Moving Millions launched a strategic planning process to chart a path for growth with the goal to increase the amount of resources being directed to the movement for gender equality. At the Annual Summit, we unveiled our ambitious strategic plan to increase our impact by 2025. We shared our bold new brand identity and website, along with our Manifesta, core beliefs, and the values guiding our decision-making moving forward. We also announced our vision for the future: a gender equal world.
OUR VISION
WMM Five-Year Strategic Plan
Driven by our shared values of bold action, curiosity, and the power of community, we established three goals to accelerate progress toward our vision.
1. Double the size of our collective impact
“This is the power of women’s philanthropy: to listen, learn, and bridge understanding to inform how we work together in support of a shared agenda.”
Sarah Haacke Byrd
By 2025, we will double our membership and mobilize increased investment in organizations and initiatives benefiting women and girls. Through membership growth and renewed $1 million commitments from existing members, we will catalyze a minimum of $275 million in additional resources to achieve gender equality. Through storytelling, knowledge sharing, and research, we will demonstrate how our membership community is a positive force for change.
2. Invest in the leadership journey of our community to enhance their philanthropy
Building on a multiyear investment in our groundbreaking Philanthropic Leadership Program from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, we will invest in expanding our educational program offerings for members. Our goal is to further nurture participants’ understanding of
how to be supportive leaders in service of the women’s movement, hone skills to enhance their philanthropy, take deep dives into issues impacting women and girls, promote the use of gender lens investing to transform systems, and strengthen the connections between members to fuel learning, inspire sharing, and foster collaboration.
3. Spark a demonstrable increase in resources for women and girls from external sources
Research demonstrates that investing in women and girls has an exponential impact beyond the individual. With this knowledge, we will build out an advocacy program to raise awareness about how a gender-focused approach translates to stronger and more resilient families, communities, organizations, and nations. We will tap into our community’s collective strength, knowledge, and networks to call for gender-focused investment approaches, amplify better models of change, bring our thought leadership, stories of impact, and ideas to the broader philanthropic community, and - ultimately - mobilize more resources to accelerate gender equality.

2020 In Review
Virtual Power of Us Summit
Our first-ever global Virtual Summit convened experts and changemakers with more than 1,200 participants to examine the transformational role philanthropy can play in supporting systems change, reimagine a more equitable future, and co-create dynamic and creative solutions for collective impact. Together, we explored the ways women and girls drive change in government, racial and gender justice, climate, the economy, women’s safety, the media, and philanthropy.
Philanthropic Leadership Program Intensive
In October, we piloted the Philanthropic Leadership Program Intensive, Storytelling for Purpose: A Leader’s Tool for Social Change. Rooted in our 5-day Philanthropic Leadership Program, this 3-part virtual series offered a deep experiential dive into storytelling, with a focus on developing the personal story our members share with the world. We look forward to offering this program again in 2021.
WMM Wednesdays Virtual Series
Starting in the spring, we convened our community for a series of intimate conversations with voices from the field about the most pressing issues of the moment. From domestic violence to climate justice, women’s health, the care economy, women’s funds, Native American and indigenous communities, and racial justice, these weekly convenings shone a light on movement leaders and their response to the pandemic.
Voices from the Field
This new digital publication series spotlights leaders on the frontlines who are working to build a gender equal world. We were thrilled to amplify the work of the Equality Fund, Donors of Color Network, Grantmakers for Girls of Color, and the National Network to End Domestic Violence.
WMM Quarterly
Launched in April, the WMM Quarterly curates resources, insights from the field, partner news, and the latest in gender lens philanthropy for our nearly 5,000 global subscribers.
WMM Community Hub
We fast-tracked this new member-only digital space to support connection, learning, and sharing, as well as for our team to communicate the latest research, news, and insights in gender lens philanthropy. This platform connects members to a global community working to advance gender equality.
Regional Connections
In addition to an in-person New York gathering with The 19th in February and the launch of regional listservs in March, our team quickly moved to set up regional cohort Zoom calls to break the isolation caused by the pandemic and support local sharing and connection.
2020 OUR YEAR OF IMPACT
GIVE BOLD GET EQUAL
On September 10, Women Moving Millions launched the Give Bold, Get Equal campaign to mobilize a minimum of $100 million in new funding for women and girls.
As a direct response to the urgent need for increased funding, this campaign seeks to push the agenda for equality forward at a moment of unimaginable need. With only 1.6% of philanthropic dollars going to organizations benefiting women and girls, and a mere 0.5% of foundation dollars going to women of color, the call for action is loud.
WE CANNOT ACHIEVE GENDER EQUALITY WHEN FUNDING DOESN’T REFLECT THE DISPROPORTIONATE BURDEN THAT WOMEN AND GIRLS FACE AROUND THE WORLD.
By closing the funding gap, we can take action to address the systemic and cultural barriers to equality that affect the lives of millions of women and girls globally. With equal funding, we can ensure equal rights, equal pay, and equal power around the world.
In three short months, our invitation to Give Bold and #GetEqual is delivering results and gaining momentum. With stories in Forbes, Chronicle of Philanthropy, Inside Philanthropy, Women’s Enews, Philanthropy Women, and Medium, the campaign is garnering media attention for our work and the urgency of catalyzing resources for gender
justice in this critical moment when women and girls around the world are being hardest hit by the impact of the pandemic. And, on launch day alone, #GetEqual generated more than 6 million social media impressions.
By building upon the momentum and early success of the campaign, Women Moving Millions is uniquely positioned to influence and inspire investment with a gender lens and accelerate progress toward a gender equal world. Our work has only just begun as we aim to far exceed the $100 million goal.

2020 OUR YEAR OF IMPACT
“Take that leap. Step into that risky place. It brings immense joy. If you’re starting on this journey, recognize it’s a journey, not a sprint...You will learn, grow, shift, and change.” S. Mona Sinha
OUR FUTURE 2021 and Beyond
Our founders understood the transformative power of a community of women coming together to leverage their individual and collective voices, influence, and resources to accelerate change. As we look to the future, we will honor our history of boldness, collaboration, and innovation by challenging ourselves to adapt new approaches, listen to diverse perspectives, and work within and across movements to leverage our dollars to root out structural and systemic inequality.
Over the next four years, Women Moving Millions will continue to grow our community, double our collective impact, invest in our members’ philanthropic leadership journeys, and inspire bold giving. We will expand upon the critical role we play in strengthening the funding ecosystem of the movement for gender equality. And, we will advocate to overcome one of the greatest barriers to equality: access to capital.
To meet our strategic goals, we are expanding our current programs and launching exciting new initiatives.
The WMM Learning Lab
This spring, we will launch a highly curated digital resource library that will serve as a one-stop shop for cutting-edge research in gender-lens philanthropy, stories of impact, timely news and relevant insights, voices from the field, and remote learning opportunities. WMM will partner with thought-leaders, researchers, and practitioners who are shaping the movement for effective and responsive philanthropy, as well as the movement for equality and justice.
Generation Equality Conversation Series
With funding from the UN Foundation, we will host an intimate 4-part series to connect our members in conversations with the world’s most influential leaders, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and activists working to advance gender equality leading up to the Generation Equality Forum later in 2021. Through this series, our members will have an exclusive seat at the table as the global gender equality goals for the next decade are formalized.
#GetEqual Conversations
Our popular virtual member conversation series will continue this year with new voices, candid conversations, and opportunities for connection. Each month, we will invite movement thought-leaders, advocates, and activists to join us to share their important work and explore how our members can be partners in change.
2021 Member Day & Annual Summit
This years’ Annual Summit will take place September 30th to October 2nd in Washington, D.C. As in the past, this convening will be a unique experience for our membership to be together in community alongside leaders in the movement for gender equality for three days of connection, knowledge sharing, collaboration, and inspiration.
Expanding Our Philanthropic Educational Programs
Rooted in the Philanthropic Leadership Program, we will expand our programming calendar with a yearlong schedule of Philanthropy Deep Dives, Intensive Educational Series, and a special Gender, Climate, and Racial Justice Immersion Experience designed to further our members’ understanding of how to be supportive leaders in service of the women’s movement, hone
skills to enhance their philanthropy, deepen knowledge of issues impacting women and girls, explore how philanthropy can transform inequitable systems, and facilitate relationship building.
Regional Member Spaces
We will hold quarterly regional member calls to deepen connections at a local level. Through these curated virtual conversations, members will hear new insights and perspectives, expand their networks, and spark new collaborations and partnerships. We hope these calls continue to connect members during this period of isolation and serve as supportive, joyful spaces for connection and reflection.
Grow Our Network of Partners and Collaborators
Partnerships and collaborations are critical to achieving a gender equal world and enriching our community’s learning journey. We will partner with the UN Foundation, UN Women, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The Center for High Impact Philanthropy, the Equality Fund, and others to bring our members in conversation with the world’s most influential leaders, policy-makers, entrepreneurs, and changemakers working to advance gender equality.

GET CURIOUS
We believe that learning and curiosity are critical to being a more effective philanthropist. Through our #GetEqual campaign, we encourage you to challenge yourself to listen, learn, and reflect on how you can be a more effective ally and how your philanthropy can evolve to support the work ahead.
