FROM THE FOUNDER
Dear Friends of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, April 2017 marked the museum’s 30th anniversary, a wonderful occasion to celebrate. The milestone brought with it exciting events, including a beautiful gala organized by Board President Cindy Jones and co-chairs Amy Baier, Kristin Cecchi, and Jamie Dorros. It was a splendid evening, and our most profitable gala ever, with many old and new friends of the museum in attendance. We are grateful for many new works donated to the collection this past year, several of which were given in honor of the anniversary. Among the outstanding works that visitors may now enjoy in our galleries are a painting by Berthe Morisot, Jeune Femme en Mauve, given by Teresa and Joe Long, a story quilt by Faith Ringgold, and a large-scale photograph by Lalla Essaydi, purchased for the museum by several NMWA Board and Advisory Board members. It also is my honor to report that in the spring, we received a $9 million bequest from the estate of Madeleine Rast. Rast was a longtime friend of the museum, and this generous and extraordinary gift will certainly strengthen our exhibitions and programs for future generations. It is the single largest cash gift the museum has ever received. The museum once again attained the highest possible rating of four stars from Charity Navigator, America’s largest and most referenced independent evaluator of charities. As we recognize the anniversary year, it is important to thank each and every one of you for your support of the museum as we continue to foreground great women artists, their history, and their many accomplishments. Dear Friends of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, The past year has been filled with achievements as the museum celebrated its 30th anniversary.

In our galleries, a new thematic installation of our collection energized not only the art on view but also our visitors, who were favorably impressed by the interesting and thought-provoking juxtaposition of artistic genres and time periods. Our special exhibitions were filled with impressive and diverse works by women artists, culminating in Revival, an exhibition of sculptures and photographs that derive their power from scale and spectacle. We also engaged with enthusiastic audiences, both large and small, through our education and public programming, including the second year of Women, Arts, and Social Change. We wish to especially thank Mildred Weissman for her multi-year gift underwriting new communications and marketing initiatives, which have raised the museum’s profile and bolstered the visibility of our programs. Off-site, a selection of photo-based works traveled to the Whitechapel Gallery in London for Terrains of the Body: Photography from the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Sponsored by the committee UK Friends of NMWA, this was our first-ever collection exhibition to travel to Europe. It was a wonderful accomplishment and a great success, garnering tens of thousands of visitors and wide press coverage. Online, we grew our audience during the second year of the viral hashtag #5WomenArtists. Once again, the campaign connected with a very broad audience, challenging and galvanizing social media users to name and support women artists. We are proud to report that this year’s effort was honored with a Gold MUSE Award from the American Alliance of Museums. We are able to create innovative and ambitious offerings thanks to you! Chromatic Scale: Prints by Polly Apfelbaum | March 10–July 2, 2017 Chromatic Scale featured Apfelbaum’s prints with bright colors and abstract motifs. Revival | June 23–September 10, 2017 In celebration of NMWA’s 30th anniversary, Revival illuminated women working in sculpture, photography, and video who use spectacle and scale for expressive effect.

COLLECTION In January, NMWA reinstalled its collection. Themes such as “Body Language” and “Herstory” draw connections between works across mediums and time periods.

Digital Asset Management NMWA implemented its first digital asset management system, named BETTY in honor of patron Betty Boyd Dettre. • 17,518 assets are currently in BETTY • 64 user accounts have generated 78,004 views and 8,612 downloads • 121 issues of Women in the Arts magazine are now searchable • 376 new images of collection art have been digitized and uploaded Digitization efforts have aided researchers, staff, and vendors.

Art, Books, and Creativity NMWA educators led the seventh annual Art, Books, and Creativity (ABC) Teacher Institute in July 2016. Eighteen pre-K–12 teachers gathered to learn and create. D.C. #5WomenArtists For Women’s History Month, NMWA held the second year of its #5WomenArtists social media campaign, issuing a challenge: “Can you name five women artists?” • 11,000+ people participated, including 520+ organizations from 30 countries • Individuals and organizations posted 17,800+ tweets, 4,500+ Instagram posts, and 80+ blog posts • The campaign was honored with a Gold MUSE Award from the American Alliance of Museums
LOCAL, NATIONAL, AND INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEES Committees champion women through the arts in their regions and support the museum’s work in Washington, D.C. Committees host and sponsor a wide range of activities and events. In FY17, committees nominated artists working in metal for the fifth installment of the Women to Watch exhibition series, a collaboration between NMWA and its committees presented every three years.
Selected committee highlights: • The Ohio Advisory Group held the first Fresh Talk Outreach Event outside of D.C. in May 2017 • The Texas, United Kingdom, and Massachusetts committees raised money to donate works of art to NMWA • The Ohio, Mississippi, and Georgia committees marked NMWA’s 30th anniversary with significant donations • The UK Friends of NMWA sponsored the exhibition Terrains of the Body at Whitechapel Gallery in London, which attracted more than 75,000 visitors
