Art at Wolverhampton Grammar School has been in the top 2% nationally for exam results for over ten years. This is testament to the value that the school places on the creative arts, the expertise and dedication of our specialist teachers and the hard work of our talented students.

The school regularly submits entries to the Merchant Taylors’ Photographic Exhibition and other nationally recognised competitions. The department also hosts 2

a variety of extra-curricular activities to enhance exposure to culture and the arts across our Junior School, Senior School and Sixth Form.

At Wolverhampton Grammar School we prepare our students for a wide variety of careers in an ever changing world.

Training in the arts promotes creative and critical thinking, collaboration, communication, social confidence and cultural sensitivity. That is why the employability of students who study art disciplines is higher than those who do not, but art is about more than that. It is about identity, empathy, personal expression and freedom of thought; all these things we cherish at Wolverhampton Grammar School.

The Viner Gallery The gallery is named after Charles Viner, Head of Art from 1942 to 1969.

Charles opened the gallery in 2008 at the great age of 101 years, and put on a one-man-show of prints, paintings and carvings in the summer of 2009.

The main focus for the gallery is to celebrate the talents of our students and we take this ethos out into our community too; the school was represented last academic year at the Black Country Living Museum’s ‘Red

by Night’ event and at Ironbridge Fine Arts & Framing studio.

The Viner Gallery also enables the school to host an extensive programme of exhibitions, showcasing the work of our students alongside practising artists. We have held soloexhibitions by notable artists such as Michael Warren (former student), Grace Gelder (former student) and Derek Jones amongst others, and regular group shows of regional artists, most recently including Dave and Jenny Gunning. We celebrate international talent too with biennial exhibitions with our sister school in Uganda - the Lords Meade Vocational College. Please read on for this year’s programme.

Strange Fascination Adrian Clamp This exhibition is the product of the artist working and responding to environments over the past two decades. The wide ranging themes explore attitudes of social issues, identity, fantasy and genetics.

Hands On Joint exhibition This is a touring exhibition celebrating the fantastic talents of students from both Q3 Academy and Wolverhampton Grammar School. The exhibition showcases a range of techniques and styles. The work will be on display in the impressive Design Centre at Q3 Academy before moving to the Viner Gallery.

Meet our Head of Art, Mr James Millichamp The aim of the department is to bring art to life for every student. As Head of Art, James is responsible for leading the work of the Art Department across the senior school.

As well as being Head of Art at Wolverhampton Grammar School, James is also a practising artist. He has exhibited work in a number of galleries across the region as well as in London.

The Art Department is based in a purpose-built centre with customdesigned studios and it’s own double gallery. We have two dedicated expert teachers, Mrs Diana Ward and Miss Emma Bowater, alongside myself, as well as support from a range of professional technicians. Students have

the benefit of working with acclaimed artists in a centre that is perfect for creating and displaying outstanding artwork.

One of the great things about working in the Art Department at Wolverhampton Grammar School is taking part in the wonderful Easter Art & Culture Visits.

We have travelled to cities as far as Amsterdam, Barcelona, New York, Paris, Rome and Venice to name but a few. It gives me enormous pleasure to know that our youngsters are given opportunities to see some of the greatest masterpieces of all time in the most incredible settings around the world. The students will remember these experiences for the rest of their lives.

Trips and Visits Jackfield Tile Museum Tube-lining Workshop July 2016 Our Year 10 artists will travel to the wonderful Jackfield Tile Museum, home to the Craven Dunhill Factory and once centre of the world tile industry, to produce a ceramic tile-picture using Victorian techniques, as part of their GCSE coursework.

Black Country Living Museum and The New Art Gallery, Walsall Bronze Arts Award Gifted and talented students from Year 9 will travel to the Black Country Living Museum and visit the Garman-Ryan collection at Walsall throughout the year as they undertake workshops and develop their own interactive digital projects.

Wolverhampton Art Gallery Regular visits to the city centre’s art gallery allows students in Year 7 and 8 the opportunity to enjoy Pop Art and themes of Conflict as well as the Edwardian, Georgian and Victorian collections, alongside the regularly updated visiting exhibitions.

Ironbridge Fine Arts & Framing Etching Workshop June 2016 On the banks of the Severn in the beautiful village of Ironbridge is a fantastic gallery, run by Jenny Gunning.

Our Sixth Form students go there to create original etchings to professional standards using the facilities on offer as part of their A Level studies.

Clubs and Activities

Art Club

Craft Club

The aim of Art club is to give students the opportunity to experiment with ideas and materials outside of their normal lessons. All senior students are welcome and can input their own ideas about possible group projects.

Previous work has revolved around contemporary artwork including graffiti and illustration, where students created their own work in response to a particular artist.

Craft Club meets in the Art block every Wednesday after school until 5.30pm and is a place for beginners, experts and everyone in between to enjoy some time crafting. This year, students have been developing their sewing skills by making Minion toys from the film Despicable Me, with some students also advancing onto making cushion covers.

During 2016 Craft Club will expand its range by also trying paper craft, card making and themed makes for events like Christmas and Halloween.

Warhammer Club Battle Commences in the Jenyn’s Library every Thursday after school.

The Club is ever popular. We run two systems of strategy battle games (40K and Fantasy) and everyone from Year 6 to Year 13 is welcome. Last year, our 40K team made it to the national semifinals of the School League, ranked 6th place in the country. The Warhammer Fantasy team got even further, placed 3rd and progressing to the final of the newly refurbished Warhammer World.

Photography Club Gary Williams (parent and professional photographer) has set up a club for anyone interested in learning more about photography. We asked Gary to introduce himself and the club:

“

If you, (like me) are a bit of a frustrated

artist and can’t draw to save your life… then let me introduce you to the dark arts of photography.

If you’ve ever looked at a piece of album artwork and been inspired then come and flex your artistic muscle at the club.

We study a whole variety of different techniques from taking portraits to learning the difference between F stops and shutter speeds as well as computer skills in Photoshop.

Mastering the skills of camera use is a challenge, in particular some technical knowledge must be learnt. The results can be amazing with a little bit of application. Some of the topics we’ve covered include: providing photo support for the school plays; making stunning artwork from rubbish that we have found in the street; glowing orbs of light on the playing fields to experimenting using

2015 Merchant Taylors’ Photography Competition Students are invited to submit an entry to this annual, national photography competition.

This year students can choose to submit one photograph depicting , ‘The Natural World in the UK’ or ‘The Man Made World in the UK’.

There are three categories: • Junior years 3-8) • Senior (years 9-13) • Staff

Cash prizes are available for the winning entry as well as the runner up for each category. All photographs will also be available to view on the Merchant Taylors’ Company website and displayed at Merchant Taylors’ Hall over the busy December period.
