Dear friends, The end of the calendar year is a time for reflection, and this year we are especially grateful to have emerged from the last few years stronger and more determined than ever. By many measures, Wolf Trap Foundation’s 2022 season was a tremendous success, and we thank you.

It is because of the generosity of thousands of Wolf Trap Foundation donors that we continue to have one of the most diverse and broad offerings of any center for the arts in America. In this past year we returned to full seasons of activity at all three of our stages, including fully staged productions by Wolf Trap Opera.

In addition, a Commonwealth-wide expansion of Wolf Trap’s Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts has dramatically increased our presence across the state of Virginia, adding a new level of local focus to our national programs in Education.

We are in an exciting period of growth at Wolf Trap. Our commitment to ensuring that Wolf Trap remains a vital resource to our community remains strong and unwavering, and as we emerged from the challenges of the last few years, we have taken intentional steps to plant the seeds for a strong future.

With just one year remaining, the Campaign for Wolf Trap: Our Next Chapter, the Foundation’s largest fundraising effort to date, is showing what philanthropy can do for our beloved spaces and for our endowment, ensuring our programs continue to grow and thrive and that our longstanding commitments to diversity, education, and access are as deep as ever.

OLF TRAP blossomed in 2022 with energy and activity. Audiences enjoyed

exceptional artistic moments during collaborative community concerts, live performances by legends and rising stars, grand opera productions, engaging children’s shows, and so much more. It was a year in full flower on and off stage, starting with patrons returning to the Park to find a beautifully re-clad Filene Center with reconfigured seating and aisles (learn more on page 15).

CULTIVATING OPERA TALENT

Wolf Trap Opera’s prestigious training program produced a triumphant and beautiful live season complete with new full-scale productions, impressive concerts and recitals, and a host of UNTRAPPED activities showcasing the remarkable abilities of this year’s Filene and Studio Artists.

Verdi’s timeless and heart-wrenching La Traviata became larger than life as Filene Center audiences reveled in soaring arias, gorgeous music, and grand sets. Presented in collaboration with the National Symphony Orchestra, the Italian opera immersed audiences in an extravagant Parisian world that captivated eyes and ears with a love story for the ages.

Two additional opera productions premiered at The Barns, including what is considered the first German romantic opera, Weber’s Der Freischütz (The Marksman). This energetic and unique production streamed online in the fall for free viewing.

Closing out the opera season, Appalachian folk melodies took over The Barns with Floyd’s heartbreaking American opera Susannah. Wolf Trap Opera also hosted Musical Mediterranean with Steven Blier and the ever popular Aria Jukebox.

Locally, Foundation staff and Teaching Artists worked closely with public elementary schools, libraries, and early childhood programs in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, to deliver rich, arts-infused programming through Baby ArtsPlay!™, ArtsPlay!™, and family workshops, and provided customized arts-integrated strategies for educators through classroom residencies and workshops.
