Dear Friends, 2020 presented some of the most monumental challenges faced by Wolf Trap Foundation in our 49-year history. When the global health crisis hit, we were forced to cancel all in-person activities, and our strong vision for the summer had to be refocused and expectations reset. Through a new, distanced lens, we found creative means to deliver Wolf Trap to our community. Foundation staff expanded their skillsets in video production, virtual programming, and even learned new food service protocols—all in the spirit of bringing the arts and experiences into focus dynamically and safely for our patrons, donors, educators, and children. Artistic performances streamed onto mobile devices and into patrons’ homes, offering unique views of our beautiful Park; education programs pivoted to a distance-based model for teachers and families to continue learning in an interactive manner; and on-site experiences like Wolf Trap Drive-Ins and Picnics in the Park invited friends and families to gather safely and see familiar faces. And most notably, Wolf Trap Opera became the sole operatic rising artist program in the U.S. to successfully and safely conduct a summer residency. Amidst the challenges of 2020, the outpouring of passionate support from Wolf Trap Foundation Board members, donors, patrons, partners, educators, and dedicated staff exemplified the vibrant Wolf Trap spirit. Wolf Trap would not exist today without the ongoing generosity and positive outlook brought forth by individuals like you. Crystal clear throughout all of this change was the immense power the performing arts has to shine joy and light upon us during the darkest of moments. Thank you for continuing to see us, hear us, and stay connected in a world that has felt very far apart. We are forever grateful for your continued belief in the Foundation’s mission and programs. We turn our focus forward to a new year when music will continue to move us, unite us, and keep our eyes on a bright future.

2020 BEGAN WITH LIVE MUSIC Wolf Trap’s 2020 year started off with a robust season of artistic plans and programs for the first three months before ambitions were stifled by the global pandemic. The Barns spring season began in January with inspiring in-person performances from artists like the harmonizing trio Bailen, American music icon Art Garfunkel, thrilling Tex-Mex rockers The Last Bandoleros, and soul powerhouse Liv Warfield. The original female country outlaw Tanya Tucker also took on The Barns’ stage with a fiery performance just days after winning her first two Grammy Awards. The Chamber Music at The Barns season continued with masterful classical performances by baritone Will Liverman and pianist Ken Noda; Paul Huang, Danbi Um, and Orion Weiss; and the Brentano String Quartet. By mid-March though, the world turned upside down and the nation quickly came to a crashing halt with the spread of COVID-19. Wolf Trap swiftly took action to protect patrons, artists, and staff by postponing and rescheduling all spring performances, activities, and services. No longer able to hold in-person performances, events, and programs, Wolf Trap refocused on what mattered most and began to envision its activities for a digital world.

Following the uncertainty of the spring and a growing public health crisis, the Foundation made its toughest call yet—for the first time in its 49-year history, Wolf Trap canceled its summer season. Even with this heartbreaking decision, support from longtime fans far and wide immediately came flooding in. With the choice made for the health of the community, the Foundation shifted its focus forward to find new ways to connect with a much-loved audience through innovative virtual performances, online educational tools, and a few safe limited on-site experiences. Without in-person performances, Wolf Trap looked through a different lens to bring artistic talent to patrons and quickly evolved into a video production studio, introducing Wolf Trap Sessions—a digital initiative bringing together a diverse group of talented artists in curated collections of on-demand and streaming performances for all ages. Recorded live at Wolf Trap National Park by Foundation staff, Park Pop-Ups brought music, dance, and new views of the Park right into audiences’ homes. Presenting a variety of genres, the nine Park Pop-Up performances highlighted local artists including: the U.S. Marine Band’s Free Country Acoustic Quartet, emerging folk duo Palmyra, jazz-fusion ensemble
t.l.a.o.o., Latin American trio Cantaré, Eddie from Ohio, children’s drumcussionist Uncle Devin, singer/songwriter Skribe, classical Indian dancers from Natyabhoomi School of Dance, plus Wolf Trap Opera’s artists in Woodland Scenes. For Opera UNTRAPPED Online, Wolf Trap Opera introduced four newly recorded digital productions from the summer’s talented artists including Love: Surrender, Orpheus Project, Into the Woods, and Studio Spotlight. Wolf Trap Opera also dug into its streaming video vault to re-release several past productions digitally, with new artist introductions, including The Touchstone, The Juniper Tree, Roméo et Juliette, Merlin’s Island, Idomeneo, and more.

Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods performances were transformed into virtual Field Trip Fridays, featuring a wide range of Wolf Trap Teaching Artists. For seven weeks, Teaching Artists welcomed viewers into their homes and backyards to enjoy a whimsical story about an inventive primate, a sing-along
about protecting the planet, an African drumming session, a dance performance about emotions, and more. The popular series was highlighted on WUSA9’s Great Day Washington and in The Washington Post.
SEEN & HEARD FROM HOMe As the year progressed, Wolf Trap had to make yet another difficult decision to cancel the fall season at The Barns. Not to be outdone by the pandemic, the Foundation rallied with a clear vision of unique perspectives for beloved Barns programs. With the help of Wu Han, celebrated pianist and Artistic Advisor for Chamber Music at The Barns, Wolf Trap announced a three-year partnership with The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (CMS). Instead of live performances, Wolf Trap presented four virtual classical concerts from CMS’ acclaimed Front Row: National series, featuring Michael Brown, Alessio Bax and Lucille Chung, Cho-Liang Lin, and Gilbert Kalish, to Chamber Music at The Barns audiences. Once a Wolf Trap artist, always a part of the Wolf Trap family. While the pandemic forced performers to cancel and postpone numerous tours, several Filene Center and The Barns’ artists collaborated with Wolf Trap to promote their own virtual shows. Andrew Bird, Rufus Wainwright, Suzanne Vega, Yacht Rock Revue, Kassa Overall, Vienna Teng, and Darlene Love all hosted streaming performances, with Wolf Trap receiving a portion of the proceeds. Fan-favorite Mary Chapin Carpenter even recorded a rare solo performance One Night Lonely without an audience on her hometown stage at the Filene Center, which was streamed and will be released as a live album.
HOLIDAY SING-A-LONG FROM HOME: Follow THE BOUNCING BALL Closing out an astonishing year of embracing new ways to connect, the ever-popular annual Holiday Sing-A-Long went digital with a two-part performance filmed by Wolf Trap’s video-production crew and released online in December. The festive musical celebration featured performances by "The President's Own" United States Marine Band, appearances from costumed holiday characters, and of course, plenty of carols and songs to sing along to from home!

WOLF TRAP OPERA: IN CLEAR VIEW, OF SOUND VOICE Summer 2020 brought a unique set of challenges for Wolf Trap Opera’s (WTO) early career artist program, but thanks to generous support, innovative leadership, and strong health and safety protocols, Wolf Trap Opera became the only operatic training program in the U.S. to successfully conduct an in-person summer residency. Kicking off this year's residency, Opera Insiders were treated in February to the unveiling of the 2020 roster of Filene Artists, Studio Artists, and Fellows during Wolf Trap Opera’s First Look. Held in person before the pandemic, the afternoon of exceptional talent featured live performances by tenor Brian Michael Moore, mezzosoprano Megan Esther Grey, and soprano Yunuet Laguna, in addition to a preview from Wolf Trap Opera leadership. At the end of June, Wolf Trap Opera welcomed 15 Filene Artists, 17 Studio Artists, and four Fellows to Vienna, VA for a six-week in-person residency, joined by a few artists working remotely. During an initial two-week quarantine period, artists participated in virtual coaching and group sessions with an impressive list of guest alumni including: 2020 Filene Artist in Residence Denyce Graves (’89), Eric Owens (’94, ’95), Christine Goerke (’95), Tamara Wilson (’08), Jamie Barton (’09), 5 2020 ANNUAL REPORT
Kate Lindsey (’05, ’07), David Portillo (’09, ’10), Ryan McKinny (’06, ’08), and Michelle DeYoung (’95). Once the two-week quarantine period lifted, artists began in-person work to rehearse and record scenes for digital performances. Strict safety protocols were put into place by the WTO team, based on CDC and Commonwealth guidelines, as well as consultations with colleagues from European opera houses. Artists observed increased social distancing, wore masks on-site at all times (except when singing), and participated in daily health screenings. Production staff utilized plexiglass barriers for protection, and rehearsals took place in outdoor spaces whenever possible. As other opera companies began planning to reopen operations safely, WTO’s successful protocols served as a blueprint for the opera industry.

In addition to remote coaching from prestigious WTO alumni, 10 guest faculty, and four language coaches, Filene and Studio Artists participated in live Master Classes led by legendary soprano Renée Fleming and celebrated WTO alumna and 2020 Filene Artist in Residence Denyce Graves. Graves worked with Studio Artists on style, performance, language, and more during her Master Class that was also streamed for the public on Facebook Live to 14,000 viewers.

Four scenes programs allowed Filene and Studio Artists to hone their craft focusing on specific roles, and productions were captured on site for digital distribution. New video content for Opera UNTRAPPED Online included Love: Surrender, Orpheus Project, Into the Woods, and the annual Studio Spotlight.

Among other digital offerings, nine Little Lunch Music performances streamed live on Facebook with artists singing excerpts around the Park, and the ever-popular Aria Jukebox appeared online with audiences voting before the broadcast. Rounding out the residency were two virtual industry audition days that allowed the artists to show their skills to 60 directors, conductors, agents, and managers around the globe.

For the first few months of 2020, Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts operated per usual, with Wolf Trap Teaching Artists delivering arts-based learning strategies to children in pre-K through first grade in classrooms throughout Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and across the country. When the pandemic forced schools and centers to close, Wolf Trap Education rose to meet the challenges with quick thinking and creativity. As teachers and parents were tasked with finding ways to engage students and children at home, Wolf Trap converted in-person services to virtual offerings and created valuable new tools. Teaching Artists received special training and support from Wolf Trap Education on how to best transform residencies and workshops for the virtual space— specifically addressing the issues of interactivity, accessibility, responsiveness, and the challenge of creating meaningful connections in a new environment. These trainings enabled Teaching Artists to continue residencies virtually and work one-on-one with early childhood educators to develop creative curriculum approaches that engage students learning from home. Wolf Trap Education debuted a new e-newsletter designed to serve as a national professional development resource for early childhood educators. Distributed three times annually, the newsletter provides artsintegration strategies alongside case studies, industry research, and key takeaways intended to enhance connections between teachers and students, and children and learning.
Wolf Trap also developed a Parent Resources webpage to provide parents and caregivers with easy access to artsintegrated educational experiences they could incorporate in home environments. Family Involvement Workshops proved to be particularly popular in a digital format. Penny Russell’s puppets and Kofi Dennis’ West African drums were a hit among younger children, and families enjoyed interacting with these Wolf Trap Master Teaching Artists from the comfort of their homes. In 2020, Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts welcomed two new affiliates to its nationwide network. Greater Denver Wolf Trap, which received an enthusiastic response to its online announcement during the Rocky Mountain Early Childhood Conference this spring, is a program of Think 360 Arts for Learning and sponsored by the PNC Foundation via its $500-million early childhood education initiative, PNC Grow Up Great. Colorado also saw one of the year’s only in-person residencies in March when Wolf Trap Master Teaching Artist Sue Trainor worked with four preschool classrooms in Aurora Public Schools, which was made possible thanks to the support of Northrop Grumman Foundation.
In the fall, Central Indiana Wolf Trap, a program of Arts for Learning Indiana, joined the affiliate network, expanding services in the Midwest. Wolf Trap's affiliates around the country worked with local school districts and early learning centers to determine how best to fulfill needs during remote learning. The October Affiliates Conference gathered representatives virtually from all 22 affiliates in the U.S. and Singapore for two days. Sessions provided spotlights on topics like best practices for quality virtual education, equity issues, adapting learning strategies for children with special needs, and creating community-specific experiences. Wolf Trap's recognition and leadership in arts education continued to advance as Education staff spoke on panels at several conferences and events aimed at members of the governmental, business, and educational communities, and discussed a variety of topics related to early childhood education, internships, and career advancement. Panels and conference presentations were hosted by George Mason University, Virginia Association
of Colleges & Employers, Association of Arts Administration Educators, Rocky Mountain Early Childhood Conference, and Alliance Theatre at the Woodruff Center for the Arts.

Wolf Trap Education introduced a new professional webinar series, Arts Across the Curriculum, with the first session in November. As part of its ongoing professional development training, Education also developed a two-part seminar, "Perceptions of Race & Cultural Expressions: How These Influence Early Childhood Education Practice & Learning Experiences," to provide Teaching Artists and staff with resources to advance the practice of reflecting honorable, informed, and culturally responsive engagement with partners and communities.

EDUCATION IMPACT & ADVOCACY In the fall, Wolf Trap Education worked with ICF, a Northern Virginia-based research and consultancy group, to establish research tools for the Institute’s Early STEM/Arts Five-Session Residency model and identify the program’s impact on classroom environment, teacher professional development, and the perception of arts integration as an effective instructional approach.

Highlighted findings from the report included: positive attitudes from teachers regarding their ability and experience with integrating arts into STEM; maintaining student interest during the instructional format for all sessions; and Teaching Artists' sensitivity to children's needs in 100% of sessions. Nearly all of the observed classrooms had a Teaching Artist who actively engaged students in analysis and reasoning (93%), provided opportunities for students to create ideas or products (86%), and prompted children’s thought processes (100%). Education advocacy remains a priority for Wolf Trap. In January, the Foundation traveled to Richmond to host a reception for state representatives and regional education partners, including Greater Richmond Wolf Trap and the Virginia Commission for the Arts. Virginia First
Lady Pamela Northam provided remarks alongside Wolf Trap Foundation President and CEO Arvind Manocha. Several Wolf Trap leaders were in attendance including: Board members John King and Margaret Gupta, Associates Board member Whitney Zatzkin, and former Board member Tom Minnick, in addition to several members of the Virginia General Assembly. The reception built awareness of Wolf Trap’s role as a statewide partner in providing high-quality professional development to early childhood teachers. New funds allocated in Governor Northam’s recent budget expand support for early childhood services across the Commonwealth. With additional funding support, Virginia communities and school districts— particularly in rural areas—gain access to Wolf Trap Education programs, and services are expanding from pre-K to first grade.
HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER ASSISTANCE April brought a new virtual platform for Wolf Trap’s Grants for High School Performing Arts Teachers Program, whose projects were supposed to culminate with a final on-stage performance at The Barns. This year’s grantees included classes from seven high schools in Washington, D.C., MD, and VA, who enthusiastically showcased their talents online via #WolfTrapVirtualStage. Students vocalized from their living rooms, performed interpretive dance in their backyards, and contributed split-screen duets, which were featured on WUSA9’s Great Day Washington and Broadway World.
EYE ON THE NEXT GENERATION While the spring cohort of Wolf Trap’s nationally recognized Internship and Apprenticeship Program began in person, the students finished their internships online with remote projects and virtual career seminars with Foundation staff. For summer interns and apprentices who were unable to participate in person, the Foundation offered panels with program alumni as professional development opportunities. Alumni spoke on fundraising, networking, and communications, in addition to offering practical advice on career prospecting, resumes, and interviews.

BACK TO THE PARK: DRIVE-IN, PICNICS, & SUPPERS While the Filene Center remained dark, patrons had an opportunity to enjoy the Park from a new view with Wolf Trap Drive-In. For five glorious August nights, patrons loaded up cars with blankets, pillows, snacks, and more, and drove right onto the East Parking Lot for a magical movie experience. While watching colorful sunsets amongst the trees, fans laughed along to This Is Spinal Tap, saw stars in the Dreamgirls spotlight, sang along with Mamma Mia!, moved to Dirty Dancing, and watched the world’s greatest animal vocal competition of Sing. Patrons remained socially distant with picnics in their designated spot and pre-purchased Movie Packs of treats for a complete contactless experience.

Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts remained open and many visitors relished hiking on the trails, having a picnic, and witnessing the lush flora and fauna. Once Virginia allowed distanced social gatherings, Wolf Trap utilized the Park’s tented decks as al fresco dining spaces, and invited members and the public to a series of Picnics in the Park in July. More than 650 Wolf Trap patrons and community members enjoyed the summer tradition of picnicking in the park during six events, noshing on locally-sourced picnic fare. With the summer Picnics in the Park selling out in a matter of days, the concept was reinvented as Fall Fest Chili Suppers in October. Nearly 700 guests enjoyed distanced dining on the decks at Wolf Trap National Park, with catering provided by D.C.’s legendary Ben’s Chili Bowl. Thank you to Wolf Trap's longtime partner for supporting Picnics in the Park.

MUSIC MOVES US, MEMBER LOYALTY, AND FUNDRAISERS Held in early March, Wine at Wolf Trap was the Foundation's last event to take place in person before the pandemic. The evening of fine wine and a delicious five-course dinner designed by award-winning Chef and Restaurateur Cathal Armstrong and Master Sommelier Jarad Slipp featured an elegant spin on Chef Armstrong’s favorite homespun Irish dishes. The beloved annual celebration reached new milestones with 200 guests in attendance and raised $175,000 for Wolf Trap Foundation’s arts and education programs. The night provided an unforgettable gastronomic experience, made even more nostalgic when just a few weeks later, the world was forced to pause all social gatherings. In November, Wolf Trap Foundation’s much anticipated fall soirée Bourbon and Bubbles was creatively redesigned. Guests and their invited parties at Bourbon in Bubbles enjoyed distinctive bourbons and champagnes in the comfort of private, cozy “bubbles” beneath the stars just outside The Barns. A highlight of the evening was a fireside guided tasting led by Tracie Franklin of Uncle Nearest Tennessee Whiskey—the first major spirits brand owned by an African-American woman. The distillery’s namesake, Nathan “Nearest” Green, was the first African-American master distiller on record and credited with teaching Jack Daniels how to make whiskey.

In a typical year, 50% of Wolf Trap’s operating expenses would be supported by ticket sales. Once the Filene Center and The Barns seasons were canceled, philanthropy became more critical than ever. In addition to contributions from membership and corporate and foundation grants, the Foundation launched the Music Moves Us initiative, a broad community-supported effort to fund bold digital activities and strengthen operations to ensure a future of music for all. Thousands of individuals and corporate partners made the choice to donate the value of their canceled tickets instead of taking refunds, longtime and new supporters made outright donations, and hundreds purchased limited-edition t-shirts to show their support during this very challenging time. Several corporate partners offered matching gifts to encourage donations, and loyal media partners like iHeart Media, WUSA9, Clear Channel Outdoor, and Entercom Communications graciously promoted Wolf Trap’s campaign with free communications. Half of the nearly 2,000 people who donated to Music Moves Us were new donors, and they hailed from across the country. WOLF TRAP LEADERSHIP HOSTED LIVE VIRTUAL CONVERSATIONS WITH THE COMMUNITY ON SOCIAL MEDIA.
This year looked different for everyone, including our 8,600 members who were accustomed to attending dozens of shows, and meeting before and after performances to celebrate and be together. 2020 started with a strong renewal rate among members and record growth in the Encore Circle membership program, hitting an all-time high of 561 (overall growth of almost 20% since 2016). This dedicated group of supporters rallied by showing their love for Wolf Trap and determination to help the Foundation weather the crisis. In fact, one third of Wolf Trap members made an additional gift to the Foundation in 2020, and nearly a quarter donated the value of tickets to canceled 2020 performances back to the Foundation. Luckily, many members were still able to come together to enjoy some of their favorite events online and safely in person thanks to our large outdoor spaces.
The popular Season Kick-off and Backstage Tour event for donors, which usually takes place in May, was viewed through new eyes and offered online this year. One of the most highly attended interactive member experiences was the July Facebook Live Happy Hour conversation with Foundation President and CEO Arvind Manocha and Vice President, Development Sara Jaffe. The event had more than 5,500 views, with many members and friends asking questions and sharing feedback. A holiday version of the virtual Happy Hour occurred in December with trivia and prizes for viewers. Wolf Trap donors also stayed connected via monthly Zoom chats with Education and Opera teams who provided program updates, plus a virtual wine tasting event for Leadership donors with vintages by Project M Wines in Willamette Valley and a serenade by Wolf Trap Opera artists.

D’Aniello, Chairman Emeritus of The Carlyle Group. Even without a typical performance season, the accolades continued to roll in for Wolf Trap’s iconic venues and leadership. Consistently dubbed the Best Outdoor Venue by Washington City Paper, Wolf Trap captured the award for 2020, and has for 10 years running. Virginia Living magazine also recognized the Filene Center in 2020 as its Best Music Venue and Best Venue for Family Entertainment in the Commonwealth, while distinguishing The Barns as Best Historic Theater. The Foundation’s talented Creative team earned three “best of” in-house design awards from Graphic Design USA, and Virginia Business magazine highlighted Wolf Trap President and CEO Arvind Manocha in its “Virginia 500—The 2020 Power List.”

FAREWELLS & GOODBYES The Foundation joined the world in celebrating and remembering Wolf Trap friends: award-winning singer/songwriter and 19-time Wolf Trap performer John Prine; Jamaican music pioneer Frederick “Toots” Hibbert of Toots & The Maytals; Kool & The Gang co-founder Ronald “Khalis” Bell; and opera-loving champion of the arts and supporter Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

WOLF TRAP’S GOT YOU COVERED Wolf Trap employed four Wolf Trap Opera costume shop staff to make more than 1,000 face masks out of materials already on hand. After distributing masks to WTO artists, Board members, and staff, Wolf Trap recognized an opportunity to give back to the community and worked with Vienna Business Association to make masks available to local businesses. Masks were also distributed to fellow nonprofits, teachers, and media partners who supported Wolf Trap’s summer efforts. Wolf Trap also found fresh and playful ways to enhance patron knowledge, with weekly artist trivia on social media. Fan favorites ranged from fun facts about country-pop star Kacey Musgraves, multiplatinum vocalist Josh Groban, and American Ballet Theatre Principal Dancer Misty Copeland, to celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with Latin artist highlights. Wolf Trap curated themed Spotify playlists to keep the music moving like “Wolf Trap’s Family Music Dance Break,” “Black Music Month Playlist,” and "Trail Mix." In an effort to keep the spirit of summer alive and engage its much-loved community, the Foundation developed a series of Wolfie activity pages for young fans to complete at home, and a fully illustrated print-at-home coloring book, Wolfie’s Magical Song, that followed Wolfie’s heartfelt journey to find his song and connect with animal friends.
