Few things in life have the power to bring people together like the performing arts. Live performances can build bridges between communities, move audiences to laughter and tears, and provide moments of relief and joy during our otherwise hectic lives.

Whether you’re dancing on the lawn at the Filene Center, singing at Children’s Theatre-in-theWoods, or enjoying an intimate performance at The Barns, the palpable energy and welcome interactions with those around you make it clear that Wolf Trap is a place for everyone.

Looking back, it’s easy to see what an extraordinary year 2019 was for Wolf Trap Foundation. With a renewed 20-year partnership agreement with the National Park Service, our commitment to the community has never been stronger. Our audiences are increasingly diverse, drawn to an array of relevant music, theater, and dance offerings, as well as stunning performances from our own Wolf Trap Opera. At the same time, future generations of young people are being shaped by the positive influence of our early childhood education programs. Wolf Trap built strong partnerships this year, and philanthropic efforts have continued to grow with nearly 10,000 dedicated supporters.

Wolf Trap exists thanks to the vision and generosity of founder Catherine Filene Shouse, and the Foundation’s accomplishments today are due to the ongoing support of our donors, community members, patrons, partners, and educators who continue to believe in Wolf Trap’s programs. Kicking off an astounding summer season, Wolf Trap welcomed Grammynominated Americana rockers The Avett Brothers back for three exciting performances during the summer’s opening weekend. The #ThreeNightsofAvetts brought new patrons from around the country to the Filene Center, many of whom attended each night to enjoy a different set and opening act.

Multi-night shows became a theme of summer 2019 with three rocking nights of Sting, two iconic performances of Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band, multiple Broadway-worthy Rock of Ages shows, and a duo of magical nights of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire™ in Concert with the National Symphony Orchestra.

Fans attending performances of Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! were treated to guest appearances by Chef José Andrés and opera star Renée Fleming.

American Ballet Theatre also returned to the Filene Center for three dreamy performances of their romantic production of Swan Lake, including a Friday night performance by extraordinary Principal Dancer Misty Copeland as Odette/Odile.

3 Many performances reached capacity this summer including the magnetic Grammy-winning Kacey Musgraves who delighted patrons with her “Rainbow” of colorful country-pop songs on her Oh, What a World: Tour II. Other shows that quickly filled the house and lawn included Dire Straits’ front man Mark Knopfler, the sensational Sarah McLachlan with the National Symphony Orchestra, pop superstar Lionel Richie, and R&B funk legends Earth, Wind & Fire.

Several shows brought electric energy to the stage, including Lenny Kravitz, Mary J. Blige, and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue with Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals, who all had crowds dancing the night away.

The National Symphony Orchestra returned to the Filene Center with the Wolf Trap debut of NSO Music Director Gianandrea Noseda and violinist Ning Feng in a program of Tchaikovsky and Beethoven. Kicking off the Orchestra’s residency at the Filene Center was hip-hop icon Nas, followed by a diverse lineup of concerts including musical satirist “Weird Al” Yankovic, Disney Pixar’s Coco: In Concert Live to Film, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in Concert, and powerhouse soul diva Jennifer Hudson.

The Filene Center saw its fair share of new faces with debuts from artists like the legendary Red Rocker Sammy Hagar, R&B stars Bobby Brown & Bell Biv DeVoe, progressive jazz champion Kamasi Washington, jam band Dispatch with Anderson East, ska-influenced Sublime With Rome, Nickelodeon superstar JoJo Siwa, boundary-pushing bluegrass collective Trampled By Turtles, ‘90s alternative singer Liz Phair, and reggaeton phenomenon Farruko.

Patrons enjoyed some of the world’s leading cultural offerings like the debut of the Middle East’s leading dance company Caracalla Dance Theatre, who performed One Thousand and One Nights. Audiences were also wowed by a special 140th anniversary performance by the venerable Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, led

by Long Yu and featuring cellist and MacArthur Fellow Alisa Weilerstein.

CELEBRATING MILESTONES Wolf Trap saw a year full of honored anniversaries across its venues. At the Filene Center, the National Symphony Orchestra teamed up with hip-hop icon Nas to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his revered album Illmatic. Other milestones included RAIN celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ Abbey Road album, Stray Cats’ 40th Anniversary Tour, and Rock of Ages’ Tenth Anniversary Tour.

3 STELLAR BARNS SEASON Fresh off renovations in 2018, The Barns welcomed patrons in 2019 for more than 80 shows including performances by legendary singer/songwriter Graham Nash, melodic rock band The Verve Pipe, reggae architects Toots & The Maytals, and acclaimed pianist George Winston. Patrons were thrilled by the debut of Buena Vista Social Club’s Omara Portuondo, John Oates of legendary Hall & Oates, groundbreaking rock group Ronnie Spector & The Ronettes, and Tony-winning leading lady Sutton Foster.

Wolf Trap was honored to have pianist extraordinaire Wu Han back for a second season as Artistic Advisor for the 2019-2020 Chamber Music at The Barns series.

After finishing out a fantastic first season with artists like The Montrose Trio and Calidore String Quartet, Wu Han based the 2019-2020 season on the book Music for Life and featured artists like the Escher String Quartet, classical guitarist Jason Vieaux, and pianist and polymath Jeffrey Kahane.

NEW ERA OF OPERA LEADERSHIP After 22 years of leading Wolf Trap Opera, Kim Pensinger Witman retired as Vice President of Opera and Classical Programming in early 2019 and handed over the reins of this prestigious program to Wolf Trap’s Lee Anne Myslewski. Under Myslewski’s leadership this year, Wolf Trap Opera thrived with an impressive lineup that included producing Rossini’s The Barber of Seville at the Filene Center, recitals and concerts, the UNTRAPPED series, and a masterclass with 2019 Filene Artist in Residence Lawrence Brownlee.

At The Barns, Wolf Trap Opera shed light on two lesser-known opera gems with a double bill entitled The World Turned Upside Down, comprised of Gluck’s Merlin’s Island and Ullmann’s The Emperor of Atlantis. Following the double bill, Wolf Trap Opera immersed itself in the comical and enchanting world of Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos. Steven Blier also celebrated 25 years at The Barns with two special 25th Anniversary Concert performances featuring current artists and alumni.

In August, Wolf Trap Opera brought its talented artists to the Filene Center to perform in a delightfully lighthearted and colorful production of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville. Before the show, Opera supporters enjoyed a dinner on the Associates Deck hosted by Wolf Trap Foundation President and CEO Arvind Manocha and Chairman of the Board Dan D’Aniello. Guests were treated to a conversation between Wolf Trap Opera’s Lee Anne Myslewski and Thomas Lausmann, a former Wolf Trap Coaching Fellow and newly appointed Director of Music Administration at The Metropolitan Opera. Originating at Houston Grand Opera, the whimsical production was complete with a giant guitar and an enormous bright pink piano on stage.

The world’s leading Rossini tenor and Wolf Trap Opera alum Lawrence Brownlee (‘01) returned to serve as the 2019 Filene Artist in Residence. While here, Brownlee led a free public Master Class to coach the program’s Studio Artists on well-known arias from Simon Boccanegra, L’italiana in Algeri, and more.

1 ZERBINETTA AND HER CLOWNS TRY TO CHEER UP THE FORLORN ARIADNE IN ARIADNE AUF NAXOS 2019 WOLF TRAP OPERA FILENE ARTISTS

As part of the UNTRAPPED series, Wolf Trap Opera’s partnership with the National Orchestral Institute + Festival provided the opportunity for Wolf Trap to produce a semi-staged production of Ravel’s one-act comedy L’heure espagnole, in addition to a captivating performance of Porgy and Bess: A Concert of Songs with alumna Alyson Cambridge (‘04,‘06). Earlier in the year, Washington Concert Opera collaborated with Wolf Trap Opera for two performances of a rare retelling of Swiss composer Frank Martin’s Le vin herbé at The Barns.

REACHING NEW AUDIENCES Wolf Trap Opera reached new audiences thanks to the digital streaming of Roméo et Juliette (2018) and The World Turned Upside Down (2019). In May, Idomeneo (2018) and Roméo et Juliette (2018) could also be heard on Classical WETA in broadcasts reaching thousands. In October 2019, the audio recording of Wolf Trap Opera’s 2017 production of The Fall of the House of Usher was released on Philip Glass’ label Orange Mountain Music.

In 2019, WOLF TRAP EDUCATION took tremendous steps forward by welcoming its first international affiliate, increasing its recognition as a thought leader in arts education, and presenting world-renowned artists and post-performance workshops at Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods.

WELCOMING NEW AFFILIATES

Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts welcomed two new affiliates this year, bringing its network to 21 partner organizations that are replicating Wolf Trap’s model of arts-integrated early childhood education in their communities.

In May, Singapore Wolf Trap became Wolf Trap’s first international affiliate.

Announced at the Permission to Play symposium, the affiliate is housed at Singapore Repertory Theatre.

In September, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga - Wolf Trap was introduced to the growing network with an event at the Siskin Children’s Institute in Chattanooga that was attended by the mayors of Chattanooga and Hamilton County. The program is housed within the university’s Southeast Center for Education in the Arts and serves the greater Chattanooga region.

A THOUGHT LEADER IN ARTS EDUCATION

In 2019, Wolf Trap Institute strengthened its position as a thought leader in the field of early childhood arts education and continued to be a major voice in a critical conversation. Institute programs were on full display in Austin, TX at SXSW EDU, one of the world’s foremost education conferences. Wolf Trap leadership led a lively conversation about using the arts to make teaching and learning environments more culturally responsive. The panel was led by Akua Kouyate-Tate, Wolf Trap Vice President of Education; Melissa Carlson, Senior Digital Producer at PBS member station WGBH; Wolf Trap Master Teaching Artist Kofi Dennis; and Kantara Souffrant, dramatic artist and Assistant Professor of Art History at Oberlin College and Conservatory.

The theme of cultural-responsiveness, equity, and access to high-quality early childhood education was also core to Wolf Trap’s presentation with leaders from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Education Commission of the States at the 2019 Grantmakers for Education Conference in New Orleans, LA. In May 2019, Wolf Trap’s Akua Kouyate-Tate and Master Teaching Artists TerleneTerry Todd and Christina Farrell were invited to South Korea in partnership

3 with the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service (KACES) to participate in International Arts Education Week.

Wolf Trap also maintained a strong presence as a trusted leader and proven model in education in the Commonwealth of Virginia. With the assistance of Foundation Board member Margaret Gupta and former member Tom Minnick, Wolf Trap leadership, including President and CEO Arvind Manocha, hosted 28 Virginia legislators from both sides of the aisle at a reception during the legislative session in Richmond. In addition to First Lady Pamela Northam, attendees included two former secretaries of education, the current Virginia secretary of education, two deputy education secretaries, and the state superintendent of education.

FOR THE NEXT GENERATION In the spring, Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods welcomed 2,531 children, teachers, and chaperones from 36 different D.C.-area schools/centers for field trips to sing and dance with bilingual performer Sonia De Los Santos.

In the summer, Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods (CTITW) was filled with remarkable artists and extraordinary moments for children, families, educators, and caregivers. The diverse season featured 33 shows by 23 artists, like Moona Luna, Madcap Puppets, Taratibu Youth Association, and the Grammy-winning The Okee Dokee Brothers. After each performance, many patrons chose to Stay and Play by exploring the trails, playing outdoor games in the meadow, and participating in free ranger programs or artist workshops.

New this year, Wolf Trap Grants for High School Performing Arts Teachers welcomed its seven 2018-2019 grantees and their students to perform their projects at The Barns. Schools from Loudoun, Fairfax, and Arlington counties in Virginia, Prince George’s County Maryland, and D.C. performed grant projects like “Mitosis on the Move” at The Barns, participated in a panel discussion with Wolf Trap staff, and toured the Filene Center.

1 IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY Wolf Trap furthered its reach and strengthened its community relationships in 2019. From pre-performance discussions and collaborations with local organizations to robust internships and educational experiences, Wolf Trap continued to participate in activities that connect with community members.

Wolf Trap also engaged new audiences by participating in community events like Passport D.C., Crystal City BID, and D.C. Pride Festival, in addition to cultural celebrations for Chinese New Year and Nowruz.

Wolf Trap carried on its commitment to providing arts for all by increasing accessibility initiatives and community programming. More than 1,350 Young at Arts tickets were distributed this summer, making it easier for families to connect with each other and develop the next generation of arts supporters.

Wolf Trap also offered complimentary tickets to more than 5,800 veterans and their families through the USO and VetTix.

Patrons attending Filene Center performances had several opportunities to participate in exciting pre-show activities. Before Disney Pixar’s Coco: In Concert Live to Film, attendees were greeted by Los Gallos Negros, a collective of musicians that specialize in multi-cultural Latin American music. Attendees also participated in face painting, art activities on the Old Farmhouse Lawn, and Day of the Dead learning experiences. Los Gallos Negros returned to delight patrons once more before the summer’s final show and counted down the lawn rush before Gipsy Kings.

Prior to Mary J. Blige’s spectacular performance, 10 dancers from the Howard University Step Team performed their powerful step routine on the plaza to get the crowd ready for an electrifying night.

Other entertaining pre-show activities included a special appearance by Wolfie in a purple tutu for American Ballet Theatre’s Swan Lake, PNC’s rocking plaza photo booth, an ABBA cut-out for patron selfies, and costumes galore for Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire™ in Concert and Sing-A-Long Sound of Music.

Thanks to PNC, the Premier Sponsor of Wolf Trap’s 2019 Summer Season, one lucky fan became a Rock Star for a Day and received the VIP treatment to see Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band. Contest winner Signe Fenwick and her daughter arrived to the show via limo, walked the red carpet, dined at OVATIONS, visited Encore Circle Lounge, and enjoyed front row pit seats.

LETTERS OF LOVE For two weeks in July, Wolf Trap hosted Visit Fairfax’s “LOVEwork” outside the Filene Center to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic “Virginia is for Lovers” slogan. Patrons and artists alike posed with the six-foot “LOVE” Letters as they made their way over to the show.

PARTNERSHIPS Wolf Trap partnered with Vienna’s own Caffè Amouri to create an original Wolf Trap blend of coffee. Artisanal, fair-trade beans from Papua New Guinea and Guatemala were roasted, blended, and ground in Vienna for patrons to enjoy in either a hot or iced version. Audiences also had a chance to try out new drinks like the Guava Otter gose, which Richmond’s Väsen Brewing Company canned for Wolf Trap.

Wolf Trap joined forces with Leidos, MAXIMUS, and PNC to host the Corporate B2B Social event on the Associates Deck. Bringing together more than 40 of the Foundation’s corporate partners and other members of the corporate community, guests enjoyed connecting with community-minded business leaders and a rocking performance by Steve Miller Band and Marty Stuart.

The 2019 Wolf Trap Ball was the most successful event in Wolf Trap’s 48-year history, raising more than $1.7 million. The September gala celebrated the Foundation’s first international Institute affiliate Singapore Wolf Trap. His Excellency Ashok Mirpuri, Singapore Ambassador to the United States, and his wife Gouri Mirpuri served as honorary hosts for the evening, and the elegant dinner was highlighted with remarks by United States Secretary of the Department of Interior David Bernhardt. The Ball was co-chaired by Patrick and Annie Pacious, and Srikant Sastry and Manjula Pindiprolu. Capital One was the 2019 Official Events Sponsor, leading corporate sponsors for the Ball, as well as Wolf Trap’s other signature events Wine at Wolf Trap and Bourbon and Bubbles.

LEADERSHIP GIVING Leadership donors are individuals who contribute $25,000 or more personally to Wolf Trap Foundation each year, and are a vital and growing part of the Wolf Trap family. This year alone, their donations made up more than a quarter of the Foundation’s overall contributed income. Some projects that are made possible with gifts from Leadership donors include Grants for High School Performing Arts Teachers, the Wolf Trap Opera Career Development Program, American Ballet Theatre’s Swan Lake, the expansion of the Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts residencies and affiliates, Chamber Music at The Barns, and the Foundation’s Internship and Apprenticeship Program. The vibrant Leadership donor program brings this group of philanthropists together for exclusive opportunities throughout the year. In 2019, Leadership donors gathered for several events, including the first ever “Summer Soiree” on the Associates Deck before an incredible Sting concert at the Filene Center.

GROWING MEMBERSHIP Membership continues to grow and provide a strong base of more than 9,400 dedicated supporters. In addition to their annual donations, ranging from $80 to $25,000, Wolf Trap Foundation members purchase 20% of all performance tickets sold and attend a wide variety of shows each year. In 2019, more than a dozen member events took place, and feedback from members indicates they are satisfied with their Wolf Trap experience including enjoyable benefits, excellent customer service, and unforgettable performances. Many Wolf Trap Foundation members also donated their time and talent as volunteers throughout the year, with more than 140 members contributing approximately 7,500 hours of service in 2019. Others are supporting Wolf Trap’s future through the Catherine Filene Shouse Legacy Circle.
