Few endeavors touch hearts and minds like the arts. Live performance has the power to bring people closer together, forge lasting friendships, and build and uplift communities.

We see it firsthand at more than 200 shows at the Filene Center, The Barns, and Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods, and we bring it directly to our youngest learners in our early-childhood classrooms across the country.

It has been an extraordinary year for Wolf Trap Foundation—certainly as measured by the milestones reached and record achievements captured in this report—but also in impact that is as difficult to quantify as it is powerful to experience. Unifying, inspiring, and welcoming experiences have been hallmark principles of Wolf Trap Foundation since its founding by Catherine Filene Shouse more than 45 years ago, and they ring ever stronger today.

In a year of tremendous performances and education expansion, we thank the dedicated Wolf Trap community of exceptional artists, donors, patrons, partners, educators, and others who made this experience possible for so many. In these pages we celebrate our collective impact and the knowledge that together we are far greater than the sum of our parts.

A YEAR OF

ARTISTIC MILESTONES Wolf Trap presents excellent and innovative programming every year. From notable sell-out concerts and high-energy artist debuts to memorable anniversaries and stunning opera premieres, 2017 was a year of extraordinary artistic milestones.

A SEASON OF DIVERSE SHOWS FOR EVERYONE With nearly 200 unforgettable performances, including more than 90 Wolf Trap debuts and one world premiere, the Filene Center, The Barns, and Children’s Theatre-in-theWoods saw record-breaking performances of remarkable talent and diverse artists for all to enjoy.

Wolf Trap fans sold out the Filene Center a total of 20 times, including an unprecedented three-performance debut by Sting. Audiences packed the house for legends and timeless favorites like Lionel Richie, Aretha Franklin, The Moody Blues, The Beach Boys, MAZE featuring Frankie Beverly, Mary J. Blige, Steve Martin and Martin Short, and many more.

WOLF TRAP FOUNDATION FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS 2

With 57 new artists performing at the Filene Center for the first time, 2017 included debuts by former The X Factor contestants Fifth Harmony, eclectic new wave singer-songwriter Joe Jackson, folk rocker John Mellencamp, powerful singer-songwriter PJ Harvey, and piano storyteller Regina Spektor. Wolf Trap welcomed thousands of new patrons with the addition of fresh and explosive acts, like R&B prodigy Bryson Tiller, YouTube sensation 2CELLOS, and reggaeton king Daddy Yankee.

The Filene Center showcased unparalleled music diversity, where in two weeks, patrons could revel in the infectious reggae groove of Rebelution, travel to the Motown era with icon Diana Ross, experience Orff’s epic Carmina Burana with the National Symphony Orchestra and Wolf Trap Opera alumni, be “Bad To The Bone” with George Thorogood & The Destroyers, and enjoy brilliant bluegrass with the Punch Brothers.

The Barns presented outstanding spring shows that included Aaron Tveit, Emerson String Quartet, Jordan Smith, and The Second City. The E-Street Band’s Max Weinberg kicked off fall with a stellar sold-out performance, followed by sell-outs for The Bobs, George Winston, and An Evening with David Crosby & Friends. The Barns also welcomed several new emerging artists like genre-twisting R&B singer Son Little, rising country star Maggie Rose, and retro-soul singer Bernhoft.

The 2017 Filene Young Artists

ARTISTIC OVERSIGHT Wolf Trap Opera was delighted to welcome back 2003 Filene Young Artist Simon O’Neill as the 2017 Filene Artist in Residence. O’Neill worked with Wolf Trap Opera’s young singers on artistic and practical career preparation, presented a free public master class in July, and performed as a special guest in Wolf Trap Opera’s Aria Jukebox.

Violinist Lara St. John returned to Wolf Trap as the 2017–2018 Artistic Advisor for Chamber Music at The Barns, programming a season that marries her well-regarded interests in traditional folk music and emerging young artists. St. John and pianist Matt Herskowitz kicked off the season with a Founder’s Day performance that set the tone for a dazzling Chamber Music series.

LISTEN, WILHELMINA! This year, Wolf Trap Foundation commissioned a new mini-musical for young children. Wolf Trap Opera partnered with Wolf Trap Education in May to premiere Listen, Wilhelmina! as the featured performance of the Wolf Trap Institute Field Trips. Written by composer David Hanlon and librettist Kathleen Kelly, Listen Wilhelmina! returned for public performances at Children’s Theatrein-the-Woods in July as part of Wolf Trap Opera’s UNTRAPPED series.

WOLF TRAP OPERA STUDIO 10TH ANNIVERSARY Wolf Trap Opera Studio celebrated its 10th anniversary season with a special Studio Spotlight scenes performance on July 8. Over the past decade, more than 100 young singers have benefited from the Studio’s performance-based training, guest faculty expertise, individual mentoring, and seminars that demystify the opera profession.

WOLF TRAP OPERA – TOSCA Wolf Trap Opera’s expanded 2017 season included the company premiere of Puccini’s blockbuster Tosca, which earned a cheering audience ovation and praise from The Washington Post. In addition to Tosca, three new-to-Wolf Trap operas were presented at The Barns—Rossini’s The Touchstone, and a double bill featuring Philip Glass and Robert Moran’s The Juniper Tree and John Musto’s Bastianello.

As part of a multi-year plan to offer opera performances to a broader audience, Wolf Trap Opera continued its free, online streaming project with the 2017 production of Rossini’s rarely performed The Touchstone (La pietra del paragone). The acclaimed production is streaming through March 2018.

Joining the national 80th birthday celebration of Philip Glass, Wolf Trap Opera performed two of the composer’s operas—The Fall of the House of Usher and The Juniper Tree. In November, Wolf Trap Opera made the first-ever recording of The Fall of the House of Usher that is set to be released next year on the composer’s label Orange Mountain Music.

ANNIVERSARIES AND FAREWELLS Wolf Trap saw a year full of celebrations and anniversaries. Fans rocked the Filene Center to celebrate The Moody Blues 50 th Anniversary of Days of Future Passed Tour, and recognized milestone tributes like The Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band 50th Anniversary and The Ambassador: Jimi Hendrix, A 50th Anniversary and 75th Birthday Concert Event.

Audiences also said goodbye to Mamma Mia! and The Bobs, who both made stops at Wolf Trap on their farewell tours. The legendary Aretha Franklin shared a spectacular sold-out performance at the Filene Center after announcing this would be her last year touring.

EDUCATION As a core principle in the Foundation’s mission, Wolf Trap’s education programs reach nearly 100,000 children, college students, families, educators, and caregivers annually through early childhood education, teacher professional development, Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods, internships and apprenticeships, classes and master classes, and grants for high school performing arts teachers.

INSTITUTE ACCOMPLISHMENTS In partnership with Springboard to Learning, Wolf Trap Institute welcomed its newest affiliate, Greater St. Louis Wolf Trap, to bring unique arts-based learning experiences and professional development to children and educators in the St. Louis community.

Wolf Trap Institute gave an interactive presentation in February at the National Title I Conference in Long Beach, CA. The prestigious conference brought more than 3,000 leading education professionals together who are committed to providing children living in economically disadvantaged conditions with high quality education. Wolf Trap’s session— Tomorrow’s Pioneers: Providing Access to All in Early Childhood Through the Arts— allowed participants to engage in quality STEM/arts experiences and explore the connection between the arts and early childhood curriculum with a Wolf Trap teaching artist.

For four days in September, the 2017 Affiliate Conference provided networking opportunities and professional development for 35 teaching artists and directors from 18 affiliates around the country.

Wolf Trap Institute received an award from the Annandale Christian Community for Action Child Development Center in August for providing innovative arts-based teaching strategies for children.

With a total of 29 Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods shows this summer, more than 15,000 young children, families, and caregivers were treated to engaging performances including FLY Dance Company, Listen, Wilhelmina!, David Engel – Jedi Training Academy!, Vital Theatre Company – Pinkalicious the Musical, and Jazzy Ash & The Leaping Lizards.

During the 2016–2017 school year, Wolf Trap Institute expanded its work to reach more than 17,000 children across the Commonwealth of Virginia and partnered with school districts in nine counties to provide STEM/arts professional development and family involvement workshops.

Funded by a highly competitive grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Wolf Trap Institute will embark on a project entitled Creativity Connects: Arts in Early Learning. Over the next two years, the Institute will host symposia in five cities: Seattle, Los Angeles, Denver, Milwaukee, and Charleston.

Wolf Trap Vice President of Education Akua Kouyate-Tate, former Virginia First Lady and Secretary of Education Anne Holton, and Wolf Trap Teaching Artist Paige Hernandez lead an arts-integrated teaching session with children at India’s Manjul Playhouse and Nursery.

WOLF TRAP INSTITUTE AS A THOUGHT LEADER Wolf Trap Institute’s partnerships expanded to include 15 days of classroom residencies and training workshops for India’s Manjul Playhouse and Nursery in November. While there, Wolf Trap’s Vice President of Education Akua Kouyate-Tate, along with Wolf Trap Board member Margaret Gupta and Shashikant Gupta—sponsors for this international project—met with Virginia’s former First Lady and Secretary of Education Anne Holton.

In September, Wolf Trap Institute continued to be recognized as a national thought leader on early childhood arts integration with an invitation to present to the Virginia General Assembly’s Virginia Preschool Initiative Joint Subcommittee. Wolf Trap staff provided an update to committee members on the progress of Wolf Trap’s early childhood model program for STEM learning through the arts.

COMMUNITY Community is at the heart of Wolf Trap. Through enhanced audience experiences, fresh spaces, enriched programming, and new public initiatives, Wolf Trap reached beyond its boundaries to build strong community connections.

COMMUNITY AS FANS Wolf Trap audiences embraced their inner fandom by arriving costumed as wizards, dinosaurs, and video game characters for shows like Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone™ – In Concert, Jurassic Park™ – In Concert, The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses, and I Love the 90’s.

Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods invited thousands of young patrons and their parents to Stay and Play after shows with activities like arts workshops, Junior Ranger programs, and hula hoops and bubbles.

UNTRAPPED Wolf Trap Opera extended the thrill of opera to new places and unusual spaces this year with UNTRAPPED. In partnership with a variety of organizations and nontraditional venues, Wolf Trap Opera’s UNTRAPPED reached new audiences with exciting live performances in communities throughout the region.

In collaboration with Halcyon Stage, Wolf Trap Opera presented an immersive production of Philip Glass’ The Fall of the House of Usher directed by Septime Webre in a special one-night-only event at Union Market’s Dock 5. Together with Halcyon, Wolf Trap also took on a free Pop Up @ Union Market show with a two-hour scavenger hunt full of short opera and chamber music pop-ups.

At the University of Maryland’s Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Wolf Trap Opera joined The National Orchestral Institute Philharmonic for an evening of Pops Extravaganza – A Night at the Theater and later returned to perform Mahler’s Fourth.

SHOUSE HISTORICAL MARKER On October 18, the legacy and generosity of Catherine Filene Shouse were honored with the unveiling of a new Virginia Historical Highway Marker on Trap Road near the entrance to Wolf Trap National Park. During the dedication event, local community leaders, friends of Wolf Trap, and staff were joined by Shouse family members—John J. Robertson, Dana Robertson, and David A. Robertson—to celebrate Mrs. Shouse’s vision to create a cultural haven for all to enjoy.

SUMMER SEASON KICKOFF EVENT Wolf Trap welcomed members to the Filene Center on May 6 for the first annual Summer Season Kickoff Event. Families and friends enjoyed a sneak peek of the summer season, backstage tours, performances by Master Teaching Artist Kofi Dennis and Wolf Trap Opera artists, an ice cream social with Wolfie on the OVATIONS deck, and a panel discussion with staff from the National Park Service and Wolf Trap Foundation.

ENHANCED AUDIENCE EXPERIENCES To make the patron visit more convenient, fun, and memorable, Wolf Trap introduced mobile ticketing, extra path lighting, Snapchat filters, and new digital signage to assist patrons in wayfinding.

Patrons were also offered several new ways to enhance their Wolf Trap experience including a PNC-sponsored photo booth, member perk nights, pre-performance discussions, and happy hours on the Associates Deck. Audiences of the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone™ – In Concert were treated to a pre-performance Quidditch match in the Meadow, while those attending Jurassic Park™ – In Concert were able to interact with a Smithsonian dinosaur expert.

RECOGNITION Selected from a pool of more than 350 nominees, Wolf Trap Foundation was awarded a Virginia Commission for the Arts “50 for 50 Arts Inspiration Award” for contributing a benefit to the economic health and tourism in the community, exhibiting artistic excellence, celebrating diversity, and showcasing Virginia as a cultural destination.

Governor Terry McAuliffe congratulated winners at the Executive Mansion for a Celebration of the Arts in October.

On April 6, Wolf Trap Foundation accepted the 2017 Best of Reston Civic-Community Organization Award at the 26th Annual Best of Reston Awards Gala for sparking creative fires for lifelong enrichment of children.

FOOD AND BEVERAGE This year, concert-goers were able to enjoy local and sustainable foods and beverages from Wolf Trap concessions. From juicy grass-fed and dry-aged Black Angus beef to locally sourced breads and cheeses, Wolf Trap enhanced the menu for all while also supporting local partners. Wolf Trap also collaborated with Vienna’s own Caboose Brewing Co. to create a private-label craft beer—Wolf Trap Summer Ale. Back by popular demand, Wolf Trap Honey, sourced from on-site beehives, was a patron favorite in the Gift Shop again this summer. New this year—visitors could buy Honey Soap handmade by Muddy Creek Soap Company using Wolf Trap beeswax.

2017 will be remembered as the year of the Pavilion Cup. For the first time, audiences were able to enjoy drinks in the covered seating area of the Filene Center thanks to these spill-safe, reusable, and recyclable cups. The Pavilion Cups were a tremendous success and patrons purchased more than 40,000 during the summer season.

WOLF TRAP BALL A Mediterranean paradise awaited guests the moment they hit the red carpet at the 2017 Wolf Trap Ball, hosted in partnership with the Embassy of Monaco. Thousands of roses bloomed throughout the Filene Center, a nod to the late Princess Grace, and her love of the hot pink hued rose.

The importance of Wolf Trap Foundation’s mission was underscored by Virginia’s Governor, the Honorable Terry McAuliffe, who attended with his wife Dorothy, and delivered brief remarks before dinner. Applauding Wolf Trap as a leader in early education and the arts, McAuliffe declared, “We are the greatest state in the greatest nation on earth because of Wolf Trap. And I appreciate everything that Wolf Trap does.”

Ball co-chairs Karen and Fred Schaufeld and Nancy Laben and Jon Feiger announced that the Ball raised $1.5 million for Wolf Trap Foundation’s arts and education programs.

Serving as the evening’s honorary host, Her Excellency Maguy Maccario Doyle, Ambassador of Monaco, shared a videotaped message from His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco, which highlighted the passion Monaco and Wolf Trap share for the arts and nature. Nearly 850 Ball guests seated onstage at the Filene Center explored the Courtyard of the Princely Palace featuring an exact replica of Princess Grace’s wedding gown, danced on a model of the famed Opera House stage, and gambled in Wolf Trap’s own “Casino de Monte-Carlo” for the chance to win an extraordinary trip to Monaco.

AN EVENING OF THANKS Mid-summer, An Evening of Thanks united more than 150 of Wolf Trap Foundation’s most loyal supporters, all of whom were members in 1988 and are members today– nearly 30 years later. The celebration created a special opportunity for guests to share favorite Wolf Trap stories, recall decades of memorable performances under the stars, and enjoy distinctive recognition for keeping Wolf Trap among their philanthropic priorities over so many years. Wolf Trap Foundation President and CEO Arvind Manocha hosted the evening, thanking dinner guests for their significant longtime involvement and stating, “You have helped make Wolf Trap the beloved national treasure it is today.”

Following dinner, guests enjoyed a magnificent NSO performance of Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto, with pianist Seong-Jin Cho, and Orff’s epic Carmina Burana featuring Wolf Trap Opera alumni and a mega chorus of 220 made up by eight choral groups from around the region.

2017 Leadership Dinner: Board Chairman Dan D’Aniello and President and CEO Arvind Manocha hosted the Foundation’s most generous individual philanthropists at an elegant and exclusive Leadership Dinner at The Barns in early spring.

GREAT GATHERINGS The fall welcomed Wolf Trap’s popular bourbon tasting social, expanded this year to include an effervescent selection of sparkling wines. Nearly 200 Wolf Trap members and patrons enthusiastically attended Bourbon and Bubbles in November, and raised more than $80,000 for the Foundation. The evening featured something for every palate, from signature cocktails to upscale barbeque to a cigar lounge with hand-rolled cigars and bourbon pairings, all set to smooth blues music. The rustic simplicity of The Barns served as the perfect backdrop and provided both new friends and familiar patrons alike with a unique Wolf Trap experience.

The Foundation started some new traditions this year by hosting the first-ever Business to Business Social in August. This inaugural event brought together the Foundation’s corporate partners, vendors, and other members of the local business community for an evening of food, games, and fantastic performances by rock sensations Blondie and Garbage. More than 40 companies were represented, including small technology companies, local law firms, and nationally recognized banks. For several guests, the event marked their first Wolf Trap National Park experience. Each year, Wolf Trap partners with more than 75 businesses committed to investing in the community, performing arts, and education.
