The use of interosseous (IO) vascular access continues to gain support from professional organizations and HCPs throughout the world. IO access has proven to be a safe, fast, alternative to conventional methods of vascular access. This session will review IO access to traditional vascular access. We will discuss how IO access has become a standard of care for emergent, urgent, and medical necessary cases with difficult vascular access. Finally we will review the ARROW® EZ-IO® Intraosseous Vascular Access System and how it can be used to gain safe and quick access to reduce delays in treatment and improve patient outcomes.

Rethinking the risk of peripheral IV blood exposure and catheter-related bloodstream infection: Engineering practices and products Marcia Ryder, PhD, MS, RN (US)

Peripheral IV catheter blood control (PIVC-BC) technology addresses the critical need for the protection of healthcare workers from exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Engineering blood control into PIVCs requires additional components to be added to the catheter hub, which raises some concern of increased infection risk. In this session, results of current research comparing bacterial transfer rate and biofilm formation of four blood control catheters and the correlation to catheter surface area, volume, components, and fluid path will be presented. The results of these studies may become increasingly important for catheters that remain in place greater than 96 hours under the clinically indicated site change standard as in set forth by the US and New Zealand Infusion Nursing Standards. Current guidelines and practices requiresand emphasis on infection prevention to reduce the increasing risk for PIV-CRBSI (peripheral IV - catheter related blood stream infection). The goals of this session are to reassess the risk of PIV-CRBSI and to consider new research findings comparing biofilm formation in blood control PIV catheters.

Objectives: At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to: 1. Identify peripheral venous catheter related bloodstream infection as a significant healthcare associated infection risk 2. The humble peripheral intravenous catheter has generally received little attention in comparison to its central venous cousin. However, recent studies have revealed the unacceptably high PIVC failure rates in clinical practice and the associated patient burdenand financial costs. So the significance of the PIVC both in numberand in impact has now been realized. In addition, research evidence now supports the removal of PIVCs as clinically indicated over routine removal.1 The onus on quality PIVC insertion and management is stronger than ever. This session seeks to raise the profile of the PIVC through presentation of the results of afore mentioned studies as well as details of current and future studies aimed at minimizing PIVC failure by providing evidence for optimal insertion, securement and flushing.

Our goal should be for each patient to have only one PIVC inserted for each episode of care. Every PIVC should work flawlessly and painlessly until it is no longer required.

Visiting Hong Kong can feel like wandering onto a movie set. Standing on deck of the Star Ferry as it glides across the harbour, riding the ultramodern railway across the island, or taking in the stunning views from atop Victoria Peak; one might feel they have somehow landed in the middle of an epic drama where the past has melted into the present.

The images of Hong Kong are captivating in their contrast; old wooden boats bobbing beside huge ocean liners; squalid alleys behind luxury hotels; tiny tenements next to sleek skyscrapers; market vendors selling chicken feet while talking on cellular phones, the list is endless. Seeing all the sights is easily done by Hong Kong’s superb system of public transportation. Between the highly efficient MTR (Mass Transit Railway/subway), and the plush Jetfoil ferries, visitors will find getting around a breeze.

Chinese and English are the official languages and are widely spoken. Cantonese is the most common Chinese dialect, though Mandarin, Shanghainese and other Chinese dialects are also spoken. Many people, especially in shops, hotels, and service industries, speak English.

Hong Kong is Cantonese for ‘Fragrant Harbour’, a name inspired either by the incense factories that once dotted the island or by the profusion of scented pink bauhinias, the national flower.

Airport Express

The Airport Express train departs from the airport’s Main Arrival Hall every 10 minutes to the Kowloon Station. The one-way trip, which takes approximately 20 minutes, costs HKD 100.

Taxi service is readily available at the airport. A one-way journey, which takes approximately 35 minutes, will cost approximately HKD 380.

Bus

Airport buses depart every hour for an hour long journey and stop at several hotels in Kowloon. You may purchase tickets HKD 130 per person at our Airport Counter.

Currency/Exchange rate The currency in Hong Kong is the Hong Kong Dollar (HKD). The Hong Kong Dollar exists in bills of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000. Coins are available in several units.

An indication of the exchange rate of is: 10 HKD = 1.16 EUR = USD 1.29 (exchange rate 30 April 2015).

Electricity The standard household electrical outlet in Hong Kong packs a wallop of 220 volts. A Hong Kong plug has three pins and a Hong Kong electrical outlet has, quite logically, three holes for a receptacle.

Emergency In case of emergencies during the Congress, please contact the staff at the registration desk. In case of emergencies in the hotels, please contact your hotel reception for first aid service.

General information There is a “No-Smoking” legislation for hotels, restaurants and all public places. As a consequence, smoking is prohibited in all parts of the hotel except in designated bedrooms and public areas where smoking is permitted.
