CONTINUING EDUCATION INFORMATION Accreditation Statement

Evaluations

The Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses Society is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Attendees can earn one nursing contact hour for every hour of educational time attended, providing they complete an evaluation for each session. Evaluations should be completed online during or after WOCNext 2021. Attendees must evaluate all sessions attended Thursday, June 24 – Saturday, June 26, 2021 in order to receive all credits. Concurrent sessions, general sessions and posters will need to be evaluated during the main evaluation along with an overall evaluation. All attendees must complete the online evaluation by December 31, 2021.

The Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses Society is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP 15115.

Learning Outcome

Learners will benefit from empowerment to provide cutting edge, evidence-based practice in the field of WOC nursing while building their leadership skills through professional practice development by attending and participating in lectures, skills labs, and participating in dialogue with experts and colleagues throughout conference.

Please note: there is a separate evaluation process for those wishing to obtain PT and CME credit for sessions attended during the LIVE event only. PT and CME credits will not be available with on-demand content. Please follow full instructions found on the Evaluations tab on the event site for additional information.

Poster Evaluations

Attendees can earn up to one nursing contact hour for every hour of educational time and must complete an evaluation for each session attended and poster viewed in order to receive Contact Hours. Evaluation forms should be submitted online during or after the event. WOCNext 2021 offers up to 36.50 Contact Hours, including 4.00 hours of Pharmacology. This includes all of the sessions and posters viewed from Thursday, June 24 – Saturday, June 26, 2021.

As you explore the ePosters this year, please take a moment to write down the poster numbers of all the CE posters you view. During the evaluation process, you will be asked to check off which posters you visited. For each poster you will be awarded 0.05 Contact Hours, for up to 3.85 total. In order to earn Contact Hours for poster viewing, you will be asked to indicate the posters viewed and learning takeaways while completing the evaluation.

While the sessions will not be organized in the traditional Wound, Ostomy, Continence, and Professional Practice tracks, attendees will still be able to take advantage of quality wound, ostomy, continence and professional practice education and submit for the appropriate credits. Specialties are indicated at the end of each session title.

Physician Continuing Education Credit

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by Relias LLC and the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses Society. Relias LLC is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Relias LLC designates this live activity for a maximum of 7 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM . Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Physical Therapy Continuing Education Credit

Physical Therapy coursework with Relias LLC generally meets the criteria established by those states that do not preapprove continuing education courses. It is the responsibility of the learner/participant to review the guidelines established by their state to ensure the courses are satisfactory to meet their continuing education requirements or professional development plan. Continuing education credit for physical therapy is provided for specific sessions. Physical Therapists can earn up to 9 contact hours. Relias LLC is a licensed physical therapy continuing education sponsor (#216.000290) by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Certificates must be retained by the licensee for a period of 5 years after course completion.

Within the Wound Bed Preparation model, not all wounds will heal. The goal may prevent infection and wound deterioration. To optimize care for wounds that will not heal requires a partnership between the patient and the health care team. In this session, we will review the updated evidence of the 2021 Wound Bed Preparation model and using a case base approach, highlight patient centered concerns and care strategy options for non-healable and maintenance wounds that should concentrate on control of pain, odor, exudate and optimizing activities of everyday living.

Over the last year, skin protection reached new urgency in clinical practice as well as for the general public. The causes of skin injury are diverse, and the etiology of the skin problem must always be correctly identified. Foot wounds are now the most common diabetes-related cause of hospitalization and are a frequent precursor to amputation. Persons with diabetes have a 30-fold higher life-time risk of undergoing a lower extremity amputation compared to those without diabetes. An infected foot wound precedes about two-thirds of lower extremity amputations and infection is surpassed only by gangrene as an indication for diabetic lower extremity amputation. Persons with diabetes have at least a 10 fold greater risk of being hospitalized for soft tissue and bone infections of the foot than persons without diabetes.

Nurses are commonly challenged with subtle and overt competent patient refusal of nursing care, including nursing procedures. Despite clear guidance and requirement of informed consent for medical procedures, there is lack of direction and training to guide response when met with resistance for nursing care. An integrative review of the literature from 2001-2016 identified only four articles that addressed competent patient refusal of nursing care, suggesting the need for further attention and research. A forum of nurses identified potential organizational interventions to address refusal of nursing care including: (1) development of institutional policies/guidelines that support refusal decision making, (2) implementation of a clear escalation plan, and (3) simulation training for nurses focused on negotiation skills. Review findings, recent literature, and innovation forum results will be summarized and interactively discussed with session participants.

“Of all forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane” — Martin Luther King Jr., 1966 PAD is a circulatory deficiency that is prevalent among the aging U.S. population, with an estimated 21 million Americans predicted to have the disease by 2020 (1). If left untreated, PAD can lead to amputation. Up to 3.5 million people are currently affected with Critical Limb Ischemia (CLI) (2). Each year more than 160,000 amputations are performed in the USA a a result of (untreated) PAD (3). 54% of patients who underwent an amputation were not assesses via diagnostic angiogram (4). The probability of major amputation depends on: who you are and where you live, your race/ethnicity/age/sex, and SES, hospital vascular rx volume. Medicare/Medicaid recipients make up the majority of those undergoing amputations. The economic burden of PAD / CLI exceeds diabetes and all cancers.

Even with incidence on the rise, literature and guidelines have very little consensus on treatment modalities. With a focus on hypochlorous acid preserved wound cleansers (HAPWOC), we will review the mounting evidence around this technology and why achieving a balance and understanding the relationship between efficacy and cytotoxicity can make material change in pressure injury treatment. More broadly, we will explore the relationship of efficacy and cytotoxicity and how considering this can lead to more aggressive interventions that reduce the risk of wound degradation and the devastating impacts of infection.

PRESENTED BY MÖLNLYCKE HEALTH CARE This session is about a quality improvement project regarding cardiac surgical patients in a large academic institution. Nurses applied a foam sacral dressing preoperatively, and it stayed on for up to 5 days post-op in the intensive care and step down units. The project demonstrated a significant decrease in the incidence of postoperative sacral deep tissue injuries. Ms. Strauss will take us through her journey to get this QIP off the ground, and the success they found with the prophylactic dressing.

1. COVID-19 patients typically have characteristics and conditions (old age, immobility, comorbidities and low skin integrity) that increase their vulnerability to pressure injuries 2. COVID-19 safety protocols limit how often nurses can check patients for incontinence. This lead them to implement the use of a technology that alerts caregivers to the presence of incontinence – the WatchCare® Incontinence Management system available on their Centrella® Smart+ MedSurg beds from Hillrom. Through implementing this technology, Baystate was able to have ‘eyes’ on patients behind closed doors knowing they’d be alerted to the earliest presence of moisture. This allowed them to address incontinence events sooner – reducing the patients exposure time to incontinence.

We will review perceptions about sexuality in the aged as well as the changing demographics of partnered sex over time. This will help us to reflect upon perceptions of aging as they relate to psychosocial, physiologic and emotional challenges. Gender differences and sexual orientation also influence the ways in which intimacy and sexuality are expressed through sickness and aging.

Evaluation and successful management of lower extremity ulcerations requires practical knowledge of anatomy and physiology as well as knowledge of compression textiles. Appropriate compression selection and application is an essential component of both wound healing and edema management. Although most think of compression as simple elastic bandages, today’s wound care marketplace offers a plethora of unique compression textile options including both bandages and garments. With all the choices available, navigating the compression selection and application process can be a daunting task to even the most seasoned clinician. Utilizing the S.T.R.I.D.E. approach to compression selection, the attendee will be given a playbook on how to critically examine a patient’s presentation and match it to an appropriate compression product. Utilizing case examples, the attendee will walk away with practical tips to compression selection, modification and application.

This will be followed by an exploration of the barriers to sexual activity ranging from cultural and psychosocial to physical and health related factors. As we shall see, aging in and of itself is not a barrier; however, certain conditions that increase in prevalence with aging can have significant negative impacts, such as diabetes, arthritis, incontinence and post surgical changes.
