WOCNext 2019 Event Highlights

Thank you for attending the inaugural WOCNext 2019 event in Nashville! From our first big networking event, to our flexible schedule, new themes and enhanced spaces to interact with fellow attendees and exhibitors--we hope you enjoyed everything WOCNext 2019 and Nashville had to offer. Here’s a look at some of our favorite moments from Nashville.

We would also like to thank the Music City Center (MCC) for hosting our event in Nashville. The Music City Center supports and encourages sustainable practices at all of their events. Conservation, energy efficiency, and waste reduction are high priorities, and are a part of their mission to focus on environmental sustainability. We are pleased to report the estimated sustainability impact from WOCNext 2019 at the MCC:

SOLAR POWER - There were 7,029 kWh produced by solar power to support our energy needs during the event.

RAINWATER - 52% of the total water usage came from rainwater!

WASTE - 668 pounds of waste was recycled and 225 pounds of waste was composted.

COMMUNITY - 1,900 pounds of leftover bottled water and food was donated to the Nashville Rescue Mission. 400 pounds of WOCNext 2019 tote bags were donated to the local Nashville Habitat for Humanity Restore, whose sales help families purchase homes and live more empowered and stable lives.

UOAA WOC NURSE OF THE YEAR AWARD: The United Ostomy Associations of America's (UOAA) WOC Nurse of the Year Award is presented to a nurse who has been nominated by one of over 300 affiliated support groups around the United States. Nominees must be members of a support group, attend meetings and have presented an educational program to the support group within the past year. This year’s recipient of UOAA WOC Nurse of the Year Award was Joy Hooper, RN, BSN, CWOCN, OMS, WCC.

TOP SCORING FIRST TIME POSTER PRESENTER AWARD SUPPORTED BY HOLLISTER INCORPORATED: The purpose of this First Time Poster Presenter Award is to engage first time poster presenters whose poster focuses on Ostomy Clinical Care Innovation. This award, supported by Hollister Incorporated, provided financial assistance to the recipient to attend WOCNext 2019. This year’s top scoring first time poster presenter award was Stephanie Winright, RN, BSN, CMSRN, CWON, for her poster titled, “Stoma Bootcamp: Intensive Pre-Operative Ostomy Education for the Radical Cystectomy Patient.”

3M AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN SKIN SAFETY SUPPORTED BY 3M: This award recognizes and rewards a team and/or facility for success in developing and implementing an innovative program, project or initiative which demonstrates significant, sustainable improvement in skin care outcomes. Applications received are reviewed based upon the established criteria. This year’s winner was The Dermal Defense Team at Temple University Hospital!

TOP SCORING FIRST TIME POSTER PRESENTER AWARD SUPPORTED BY STRYKER: The purpose of this next First Time Poster Presenter Award is to engage first time poster presenters whose poster focuses on Preventative Practices for Wounds. This award, supported by Stryker, provided financial assistance to the recipient to attend WOCNext 2019. This year’s top scoring first time poster presenter award was Rhonda Sullivan, DNP, PhD, MSN, MBA, CWON, LNCC, NE-BC, for her poster titled, “New Critical Care-Specific Pressure Injury Risk Assessment Tool Demonstrates Excellent Validity and Reliability in a Simulated Patient Environment.”

JWOCN MANUSCRIPT AWARD - CLINICAL: This year’s award recipient was the article titled, “Decreasing Incidence of Medical Device Related Pressure Injuries in a Small Community Hospital: A Quality Improvement Project” by Melissa C. Monarca, MSN, RN, CWON, Patty Marteka, MSN, RN-BC, CBN, and Karen Breda, PhD, MSN, RN.

JWOCN MANUSCRIPT AWARD - RESEARCH: This year’s award recipient was the article titled, “Factors Associated with Healthcare-Acquired Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections: Analysis Using Multiple Data Source and Data Mining Techniques” by Jung In Park, PhD, RN, Donna Z. Bliss, PhD, RN, FAAN, FGSA, Chih-Lin Chi, PhD, MBA, Connie W. Delaney, PhD, RN, FAAN, FACMI, and Bonnie L. Westra, PhD, RN, FAAN, FACMI.

WOCN SOCIETY’S PRESIDENT’S RECOGNITION AWARD: This award recognizes an individual, group of individuals, a WOCN Society member, or a corporation that has made significant contributions to the WOCN Society and/or the specialty of WOC nursing. This year’s award recipient was the Body Worn Absorbent Product Task Force comprised of Mikel Gray, PhD, FNP, PNP, CUNP, CCCN, FAANP, FAAN, JoAnn ErmerSeltun MS, RN, ARNP, FNP-BC,CWOCN, CFCN, Laurie McNichol, MSN, RN, CNS, GNP, CWOCN, CWON-AP, FAAN, and Dea Kent, DNP, MSN, RN, NP-C, CWOCN.

FUTURE IS BRIGHT AWARD: This award recognizes a new WOC nurse within the first five years of practice who is tri-specialty certified and who exemplifies the scope of WOC nursing practice as defined in the 2nd edition of “WOC Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice”. This year’s award recipient was Morgan Womble, BSN, RN, CWOCN.
