the patient and allows for ease of maneuverability in the guide. The guide provides access to the BWAP Consensus publication published in the Journal of Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing (JWOCN), written by the task force, and it also contains photos of products for easy reference. The BWAP Guide is the evidence gathered and in action and complements the care of any provider. The product of the guide is a recommendation for the patient as far as a product choice, and the user of the guide can be confident in the evidence-based choice. Because no one product is the solution for everyone, the guide informs the user of what characteristics of the patient (and caregiver) that should be assessed. It is packed with useful assessment information that addresses cognition and body habitus considerations. This guide will assist the user in following a consistent approach to the patient with incontinence in the realm of product selection and appropriateness. The BWAP Guide can assist certified WOC nurses not just in product selection, but can serve as a teaching aide for others; whether that be physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, therapy colleagues or healthcare students. The guide can easily be used with case scenarios or real-life situations to assist with real-time product selection and utilization. This will allow the WOC nurse expert to transfer much needed information to those who can also make a huge difference in an incontinent patient’s life. It is a great resource for clinical students, product selection committees across the continuum in both acute and post-acute care, and it is so user-friendly that even the most novice of healthcare professionals can make a clinically sound choice. While this guide is intended for clinicians, ultimately, we would love to have a guide for consumer use. The BWAP Task Force envisions patients looking for answers to have a guide right in the incontinent product’s aisle at major retail and pharmacies across the country. We shall continue to chase that dream, and we ask our colleagues to please use the BWAP Guide, tell your colleagues about it, and put this knowledge into action because our incontinent patient’s quality of life and dignity depends on it!

he Body Worn Absorbent Product (BWAP) Guide was an idea born out of necessity. We all know people who suffer with incontinence, and even suffer more because of ill-fitting products or improperly used products. It seems that many healthcare providers of all types have varying degrees of experience and knowledge of what the incontinent patient may need to gain dryness and dignity. Mostly, providers are consulted out of ultimate frustration after numerous fails. Unfortunately, there has been no good source of gathered information from which to make an informed decision to guide patients. That gap fueled the work for the BWAP Guide (an online algorithm) for clinicians, and it was essentially the next step after a publication that detailed the work of the BWAP Task Force and a consensus conference in 2017. The development of the pieces and parts of the guide took about six months of close work between the BWAP Task Force, which consists of Dr. Mikel Gray, Dr. Dea Kent, Laurie McNichol and JoAnn ErmerSeltun, along with Anna Shnayder, the WOCN Society’s Chief Operations Officer, and the Society’s web team. The BWAP name came to fruition when the task force members were working on the literature search and developing statements for the consensus conference. The Body Worn Absorbent Product work was named “BWAP” for ease and because the name just stuck. BWAP is easy to remember and is an easy acronym to use when conversing about this subject that makes many uncomfortable. The ultimate purpose of this project is to improve the quality of life for the incontinent patient through the selection and implementation of the appropriate body worn absorbent product. Providers of all disciplines can find the BWAP Guide a valuable resource because it is available online for free at bwap. wocn.org and is always accessible via smartphones, tablets or computers. It is not an app, but rather a website, so it's always up-to-date and is ready to aid the user in decision-making support regarding selection of the correct BWAP for any patient. The guide is very easy to use. It asks a series of questions about

ASK THE WOC NURSE

ASK

I failed my ostomy certification exam for the second time by twelve points. My question is should I take it immediately after my 30-day period is up or should I wait and do intensive studying? I initially was going to not take it again but there is that little voice that says, “try it again.” Please advise.

T

hank you for the inquiry. You have taken the exam twice and have not passed either time. I am sorry this has happened. You have invested a significant amount of time and money into taking these exams. Here are some considerations regarding knowledge and test-taking. If you did not attend an accredited WOC Nursing Education Program, you might want to step back and consider the application and attendance to gain the knowledge needed to pass the certification exam. If you did attend a WOC Nursing Education Program, take the time for intensive studying prior to the next certification exam. If there is no need to hurry to pass the certification exam, give yourself ample time to study. Many people wait to the last minute to cram knowledge, but there is too much information to cram for the ostomy certification exam! The certification is developed from role delineation study and turned into an exam content outline. These outlines are available on the Wound Ostomy Continence Certification Board (WOCNCB®) website (www.wocncb.org). Use the exam content outline to help you identify which areas you might be weakest and focus on those areas of study. Set up a time-table for your study time. For example, use the WOCN Core Curriculum book and split out the chapters by making short term and long-term goals of which chapters you will study. Consider purchasing the online certification study tools or flash cards. It might be tempting to “hit the books” for extended periods of time but be sure to take a break occasionally. Go for a walk, do jumping jacks or pushups, listen to music, or simply do some deep breathing to allow your brain to rest from intensive studying. Use charts and diagrams to help memorize the information. Ostomy certification requires in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal (GI) and genitourinary (GU) tracts and the diseases that affect both GI

and GU along the entire age span. This information simply needs to be memorized so that during the exam, you can use critical thinking to answer the exam question. Practice old exams if available to you. Consider asking a colleague to study with you. Even if the colleague is not taking the certification exam, there may be great benefit to study and learn together. Eat nutritious foods and hydrate with healthy liquids that will help you optimize your study time. Eat protein and vegetables, try to stay away from high carbohydrates, such as chips or popcorn. Drink water or low sugar fluids and avoid sugary drinks, such as soda or sports drinks and avoid alcohol as well. Now that you are prepared for the exam, here are some considerations for the exam day. Arrive to the exam site early so you are not rushed or anxious about finding the exam site. Read the exam question carefully and determine the key elements. The exam is timed, but don’t rush while reading the exam questions. These are the three parts of an exam question: (1) The stem: the part of the question that asks the question. (2) The correct response or best answer. (3) Distracters: incorrect but feasible or not the best answers. As you read the answers to the question start eliminating choices. Remember, if you make a wild guess you have a 25% chance of getting the answer correct. If you narrow the choices down to two then you have a 50% chance! If more than one answer seems correct, go back and read the stem again. Look for key words to lead you to the answer, such as age, sex, healthcare setting, or if the problem occurs early or late in the patient’s case. If none of the answers seem to be correct, re-read the stem and select the best answer from those offered. Sometimes it may not seem like there is a correct answer. These questions are there to help you use what you have learned to make an informed decision. Ultimately, it will be your decision to test after the 30-day time frame. But in the meantime, try to follow the WOC Nurse expert advice. You owe it to yourself to advance your career in this honorable profession as a certified ostomy nurse! Sincerely, The WOC Nurse

2019 Spring Scholarship Winners

C

ongratulations to the WOCN Society Foundation 2019 Spring Scholarship recipients! The WOCN Society offers a scholarship program through the WOCN Society Foundation. Twice a year, individuals are provided with the privilege of receiving the scholarship award. Scholarships are awarded to deserving individuals who are committed to working in the specialty practice of wound, ostomy or continence nursing. Each Spring 2019 scholarship recipient shared their gratitude and expressed how the scholarship will support them on their WOC nursing journey.

ALESSANDRA BRAZELL

While I am extremely proud of my achievements in the last year, I did not anticipate the financial burden of attending school while raising a newborn. By awarding me the WOCN Foundation Scholarship, you have helped to reduce the financial burden of this past year, thus helping my family get back to baseline. I feel that I can now dedicate more focus to my new position and passion for WOC nursing rather than worrying about how I am going to pay off debts from this past year.

KIMBERLY EISENBARTH

The financial assistance you provided will be of great help to me in paying my educational expenses, and it will allow me to concentrate more of my time for studying. Your generosity has inspired me to help others and give back to the community. I hope one day I will be able to help students achieve their goals just as you have helped me.

PRIYANKA GANDHI

Your scholarship fund will help me earn the designation of a Certified Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurse through specialized didactic courses and clinical practicum. I strongly believe this course and hands on experience will help me gain confidence in this specialty to promote improved WOC patient outcomes. I would love to empower my future patients and their families with education on preventive and effective treatments to help them adapt to this life changing event.

MICHELLE GEHRING

I am halfway through the full scope program at Emory University. Thanks to this scholarship, I am one step closer to my goal to one day become the best wound, ostomy, and continence nurse I can be. Having participated in community events where giving scholarships is a large portion, this is the first time I have been on the receiving end. The excitement is energizing and motivating. This scholarship will help me earn the credentials I can wear with pride to have such specialized training and knowledge.

APRIL MCCARTY

I am extremely excited about what the future holds and to continue to pursue my love of wounds, ostomy and continence care. With your help from the scholarship I will get there! Thank you for your generosity!

AMY MENEGAY

This award captures the belief of funding the future of wound, ostomy, and continence care, as well as my ability to join this rewarding field of nursing. I plan to give back to someone in my current position someday as a result of your continued faith in my abilities as a future CWOCN. Thank you.

BRENT REEL

Though my hospital didn’t have funds set aside for this certification, I was determined to finish continence training even if I needed to pay for it myself – my patients absolutely need and deserve it. I also have the privilege of working alongside amazing WOC nurses at my facility who have so much experience as full-scope WOC nurses that are providing me with anecdotal knowledge; knowledge that I needed to tie to formal education to ensure I was providing gold-standard care to these kids and teenagers.

CHRISTINE SHETTLER

As I complete my education at Emory, I am very thankful for receiving your thoughtful gift. Because of your scholarship, some of my financial burden has been lifted. I can now relax and enjoy my education without having to worry about how to pay for my trip down to Atlanta to fulfill my school requirements.

MARGARET SMART

I returned to nursing two years ago after raising a family, and in quick succession completed my BSN and decided to become a WOC nurse. This scholarship confirms my direction and decisions, and in practical terms will help me complete my Cleveland clinical experience this fall. I am deeply grateful for your support of my work in serving a very special population.

JENNIFER WEISER

The WOCN Foundation Scholarship Program award has inspired me to press onward to achieve my goal of becoming a WOC nurse. Prior to receiving this scholarship, much of my focus was on the financial burden I would be facing with my upcoming travel to Cleveland and having to miss work for three weeks in September. I feel that I can now focus on the academic portion of my pursuit and continue to be successful.
