We are so excited to have you join us online for this unique event experience. Over the past few months, the National Conference Planning Committee (NCPC) has been extremely hard-at-work to reimagine and innovate the in-person event to a completely online format, while ensuring evidence-based education and ample networking opportunities for our attendees. During these uncertain times it is more important than ever to realign with our peers and industry partners. WOCN is dedicated to providing our members and the greater healthcare community with the resources and education needed to continue to learn and grow, both personally and professionally. We are thrilled to be able to offer you this online event experience and are confident the education and networking provided will help you feel better equipped to take on challenges in your practice and continue to improve your patient outcomes.

As you prepare to learn assessment, treatment, and prevention strategies from the comfort of your home or office, here are some additional things to be aware of for this year: • During this online experience, you will be able to access both live and on-demand evidence-based wound, ostomy, continence and foot and nail care education presented by speakers who are WOC nurse experts, physicians and surgeons, educators and consultants. All submitted abstracts undergo a rigorous peer review process to determine acceptance for presentation at the conference. The top scoring posters in each category are then peer reviewed during the event to determine merit award winners for the categories of Case Study, Practice Innovation and Research. Continuing Nursing Education Accreditation Statement

June 5 – Sunday, June 21, 2020 in order to receive all credits. Concurrent sessions, general sessions and posters will need to be evaluated during the main evaluation along with an overall evaluation. All attendees must complete the online evaluation by Sunday, June 21, 2020.

Poster Evaluations

The Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

As you explore the ePosters this year, please take a moment to write down the poster numbers of all the CE posters you view. During the evaluation process, you will be asked to check off which posters you visited. For each poster you will be awarded 0.05 Contact Hours, for up to 4.75 total. In order to earn Contact Hours for poster viewing, you will be asked to indicate the posters viewed and learning takeaways while completing the evaluation.

Learner Outcome

Learners will benefit from empowerment to provide cutting edge, evidence-based practice in the field of WOC nursing while building their leadership skills through professional practice development by attending and participating in lectures, skills labs, and participating in dialogue with experts and colleagues throughout conference.

Submitting Continuing Education Credits

Attendees can earn up to one nursing contact hour for every hour of educational time and must complete an evaluation for each session attended and poster viewed in order to receive Contact Hours. Evaluation forms should be submitted online during or after the event. WOCNext 2020 Reimagined offers up to 27.5 Contact Hours, including 3.00 hours of Pharmacology. This includes all of the sessions and posters viewed from Friday, June 5 – Sunday, June 21, 2020.

This session presents Dr. Bill Hettler’s Six Dimensions of Wellness Model. The aim of the presentation is to provide a conceptual basis for wellness and self-care. Interventions are discussed that focus on non-pharmacological approaches to self-care that can also be used in direct patient care to provide your patients alternatives to pharmaceutical medications and provide you with tools for self-management of emotional and physical ailments. This presentation conceptually distinguishes between health and wellness; which are overlapping but distinct, and measurable characteristics of individuals and groups, with health being the absence of disease, and wellness being the conditions that support health and reduce risk of disease. Health can in a sense be viewed as a series of dichotomous variables that describe functionality of body and mind, while wellness is more accurately viewed on a continuum, and inclusive of physical and non-physical domains of self. The second component of this session will focus on the immune system, the lymphatic system and women’s health. This portion will be presented by Nancy Nathenson, RRT.

This presentation will discuss current trends in pressure injury development in the acute care setting identified through the International Pressure Ulcer Prevalence (IPUPTM) survey. National prevalence rates, risk factors and prevention strategies will be discussed across acute care sub-specialties as well as factors that contribute to unavoidable pressure injury development. Input from WOCNext attendees at this session, along with these results will become the focus of a future study on unavoidable pressure injuries in acute care.

Supported by BD Bard Hospitals risk reduced reimbursement based on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Value Based Purchasing Program if patients experience never events (preventable outcomes) including catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI). Most hospitals have implemented the 2014 CAUTI prevention guidelines that include removing catheters earlier than ever before and reducing the number of catheters inserted. In 2019, the WOCN identified that no guidance existed for the selection of interventions post catheter removal. A Task Force reviewed the literature and convened an expert consensus panel to address gaps in the literature. A web-based decision support tool was subsequently developed and will be introduced in this session.

Nutrition management of a patient with a new or existing ostomy or continent diversion presents a special challenge to the clinician. Telehealth applications are an emerging technology in a new era of telemedicine within health care systems. Although telehealth technologies, are utilized by various members of the health care team, Nurse Practitioners utilize them for a variety of patients’ issues across healthcare settings. The Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne Computer Science Department developed a wound scanning application, WoundView, for nurse practitioners to utilize in different healthcare settings. Such telehealth mobile applications are used in clinics, home health, rural, and remote settings where a physician may not be readily available. There are challenges with current practice of using telehealth technologies including a dire need for evidence-based research supporting attainable solutions for these barriers. Extensive, ongoing research will allow Nurse Practitioners to anticipate an immense mainstream implementation of telehealth applications in the near future.

This session will review current literature on appropriate use of antiseptics, which agents are considered helpful or harmful according to current research, and discuss clinical pearls on use of antiseptics for patients with wound and skin related problems.

The majority of patients with IBD report significant fatigue as a complaint. Although fatigue is seen in patients with active IBD, the complaint is also described in roughly 30-40% of patients with inactive disease. Considering the protean nature of the complaint as well as the prevalence in IBD patients, a coordinated multi-faceted assessment of fatigue is required, with input of multi-specialties. The goal of the session is to allow attendees an algorithm and means to assess complaints related to IBD associated fatigue.

Chronic wounds, inflammatory bowel diseases, and pelvic floor disorders are affected by many factors, but have you considered exposure to childhood adversity as a risk for these conditions? When persons awaken at night to solely relieve the urge to urinate it is called nocturia. Nocturia is not just a nuisance. It is disruptive to sleep which has many serious medical consequences.

Recent literature regarding skin failure, pressure injury, moisture-associated skin damage, and friction skin injury has expanded information providing additional clarification for healthcare providers to classify tissue injury. However, there is a unique tissue injury on the buttocks that is not captured in the current classification systems. Specifically, this tissue injury is characterized as purple maroon discoloration, with or without skin breakdown, located on the fleshy portion of the buttocks not necessarily over a bony prominence. The tissue injury has two distinguishing factors; the injury results in a chronic skin condition and the discoloration does not resolve or deteriorate. Currently, there is not a classification for this type of injury, which in turn leads to incorrect identification, disparate classification, and poor interrater reliability. The focus of this lecture is to raise awareness of this unique tissue injury. Ultimately, the goal is to have consistent terminology to describe tissue injury in skin classification systems for correct and reliable selection by all healthcare providers.

Unfortunately, nocturia is commonly and erroneously attributed to urological causes: an enlarge prostate in men and an overactive bladder in women. In fact, nocturia is most frequently caused by nocturnal polyuria, which is often secondary to serious medical conditions. Diagnosing and treating nocturia, or more correctly, nocturnal polyuria, provides appropriate intervention of medical conditions causing these common symptoms, while preventing additional harm promoted and perpetuated by the disruption of sleep.

In addition, the lecture will cover how the authors identified the clinical problem and the process it took to bring the clinical issue to publication. We sincerely hope to stimulate clinical nurses in the field to publish their ideas. Clinical practice drives healthcare reform, and there is a great need for publications to substantiate the evidence.

We will explore the different appearances of ostomy mucosa, looking for evidence of infection, inflammation, and neoplasia. The goal will be to understand what is within the realm of normal and what warrants special attention.

This session with discuss the workup and management of patients with neurogenic bladder dysfunction. Many clinicians are not comfortable assessing and managing neurogenic bladder dysfunction. This session will outline an organized and very pragmatic approach to these sometimescomplex patients.

A GUIDE FOR ENTERAL NUTRITION SUPPORT PATIENTS The FEEDS Team is a service dedicated to helping patients who are discharged from the hospital on tube feedings. The team provides to this patient population: inpatient education; nutritional guidance; discharge coordination; and outpatient follow-up. The FEEDS Team is part of the Center for Nutrition Support at UPMC Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.

One-third of the older adult population has foot problems that can lead to decreased mobility and independence. Foot problems such as corns, calluses, dry and cracking skin, and long or thick toenails can be managed through proper self-care, potentially increasing quality of life and functional status. Until recently, no tools existed to measure the presence and severity of nail and skin conditions that can be improved through self-management. The Foot Health Score, a 15-item, quantitative, provider assessment of skin and nail conditions amenable to self-management, had not undergone psychometric testing. Investigators refined the FHS tool and then evaluated content validity, discriminate validity, intra-rater reliability, and sensitivity to change.

PHARMACOLOGY CREDIT: 0.25 Speakers: Glenda Brunette, MSN, RN, CWON Teresa Kelechi, PhD, RN, CWCN This session will provide attendees with the latest recommendations from the 4th edition of the Guideline for Management of Wounds in Patients with Lower-Extremity Venous Disease (LEVD), updated from a systematic search of databases and a systematic review and synthesis of literature published August 2010 through December 2017. The review included studies reporting primary data relevant to LEVD and venous leg ulcers (VLUs) and specific therapies or diagnostic modalities. A summary of the recommendations for assessment, prevention and management of LEVD and VLU risk reduction, wound management, compression therapy, adjunctive therapies, medications, nutrition, surgical options, and patient education and health care follow-up will be presented along with level and quality of evidence, and benefit/effectiveness/harm classification for all recommendations.
