elcome to the 39th annual WOBM Christmas Classic, presented by Jersey Mike’s and hosted by Townsquare Media and the Toms River Regional School District. Once again, 32 varsity basketball teams (16 boys/16 girls) will be participating and playing 48 games over five days at the RWJBarnabas Health Arena. The tournament was established in 1984 as a replacement for the Southern Regional Roundball Festival and began with eight boys teams playing over three days at Ocean County College. The girls division was added in 1994 and the tournament moved to the campus of Toms River High School North in 2003. Today, the WOBM Christmas Classic is one of the largest holiday basketball tournaments in New Jersey. Special thanks to the Toms River School District and Board of Education for hosting the event and providing such an outstanding facility for the participants.

As he does each year Tournament Founder/Director Kevin Williams served as Master of Ceremonies and host of the morning event and spent several minutes thanking the near two dozen sponsors who help make the event possible. Topping that list is Jersey Mike’s the presenting sponsor of this year’s tournament and a major supporter of high school sports. As they have since the WOBM Classic started in 1984 the Causeway Family of Dealerships in Manahawkin is once again a big part by providing tee-shirts for all the players and sponsoring the Most Valuable Christams Classic founder/director Player awards. Atlantic Physical Kevin Williams Therapy Center continues to be a major supporter of the event and attending the breakfast was Dave Manzo, who played in the tournament during his high school days. APTC is sponsoring the lanyards that will be worn by coaches, players and sponsors. Welcoming the players and coaches to this year’s tournament was Neil Bryant, Vice President of Operations at Community Medical Center/RWJBarnabas Health. CMC has been a huge supporter of the tournament and has provided funding for academic scholarships in recent years. At the breakfast Williams announced the eight winners of the $500 awards who will be publically recognized on the final day (December 30). They are now all college freshman and the monetary award will help with second semester educational expenses. With this years $4000 total the Classic has topped $100,000 in money awards to participating players based on their academic performance. Of course the entire 48-game event will be held at the RWJBarnabas Health Arena on the campus of Toms River High School North. Also welcoming the teams was Michael Citta, the Superintendent of the Toms River Regional School District who have graciously hosted the tournament since 2003.

The field of 32 teams for the WOBM Classic is similar to what it’s been in recent years but there are some fresh faces as Brick, Middletown North and Point Pleasant Beach join the girls division and Brick comes into the boys bracket as well. Seaview Orthopaedics is back as the official team doctors of the Classic and they also provide the Athletic Trainers who work the event. That group is made up of Kendall Culver (TR North), Jake McCartney (TR East), Kristen Dilloian and Dan Crashewsky (TR South) who spoke to the players about safety protocols for care during the tournament. The WOBM Christmas Classic welcomes back the U.S. Marines who were represented at the breakfast and will be on site during the tournament and happy to answer any questions about educational and career opportunities. Williams once again explained that in today’s economy you could not run an event like the WOBM Christmas Classic without significant support from sponsors. In addition to the ones named he thanked the Office Lounge in Toms River who hosted the Coaches Seeding Breakfast on December 17 and Builders General.

ince the WOBM Christmas Classic was established in 1984 we have awarded scholarships to participants based on their performance in the classroom. The inaugural recipient was Southern Regional’s John Klimkiewicz who has gone on to become a highly-regarded orthopedic surgeon and has served as the head team physician for the Georgetown Hoyas and the NHL’s Washington Capitals. The way the program works is schools are eligible to nominate their top graduating senior player following graduation. We then sort through the nominations, make sure the student is a full-time college student and select four males and four females. Each is then invited to attend the final games on December 30 and receive a $500 scholarship which is provided by Community Medical Center, RWJBarnabas Health. Officials of the hospital make the presentations to these outstanding academic achievers.
Teri Kubiel, Vice President of Community & Government Affairs for RWJBH Southern Region (Ocean County) presents scholarship awards to 2022 Girls recipients. Kelly Goodall - TR East/Rutgers University Kolby McGowan - Manasquan/Brookdale CC-NJ Stars Program Lauren Lacey - Wall/Florida State University Chloe Seluchins - TR South/Stevenson University
