t’s full steam ahead for the much anticipated Summer but, there is a small part of me feels a little sad, as our 6-year old turns 7 and yet another school year is ticked and boxed off. The Summer is finally becoming a reality and, to help minimise the overwhelming feeling that can often come with tackling the school holidays, I have been trying to plan ahead. The main thing, for me, is to ensure that the long days and nights have equal measures of fun, activities and rest for us all.

After a recent chat with the local cricket mums it seems that many are keeping their plans as simple as possible and some are opting to camp local. Some talked of finding local campsites within 30/60 minutes drive from home. Others are searching for campsites that offer ‘Just Eat’ or ‘Deliveroo’ deliveries! My first preference would be a home BBQ (local shops are offering loads of different styles) so I wouldn’t have to leave home to enjoy tasty food

outdoors. Local festivals seem to be gaining popularity and there are ones to suit all tastes right across the various genres. Whether held in local sports clubs or public parks they seem to be cropping up everywhere. We have spotted a few on our doorstep to entice you in and offer great entertainment whatever your interests.

Local businesses are standing by to service your Summer needs - whether it be paddling pools, water pistols, camping gear or BBQs. If you’re not keen on putting together your new outdoor furniture why not try one of our local handymen? Be sure to use local goods and services whatever your plans might be this Summer.

THE BOOK SHELF

ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE

This amazing novel is set during the final, harrowing days of World War II. It involves a blind, but incredibly adaptable, French girl, Marie-Laure Le Blanc and an intelligent, sensitive German boy, Werner Pfennig. The story moves between these appealing characters and we see the lifestyle changes wartime can really involve. We look back at their early lives, the very different problems they had to face growing up and the ways they coped with their individual challenges.

transmitting coded messages as they are passed to him by the various group members. Marie-Laure finds the broadcasts fascinating as they add another dimension to her rather limited life.

She and her father move to Saint-Malo to live with her great-uncle, Etienne, when Paris is invaded by the Germans and, despite her sight loss, Marie-Laure learns to move around the city unaided. When her father is arrested she continues to live with her reclusive great-uncle who has a fascination for radios and his skills become an integral part of the local women’s resistance movement. He is tasked with

Werner, and his sister, Jutta, are orphaned when their father is killed in a coalmining accident and they are taken into care in a local children’s home. He has a natural talent for fixing and building radios and his skills draw him to the attention of the Hitler Youth and he is soon enrolled in military school. He continues to develop his passion for broadcasting and it is through the airwaves that he and Marie-Laure become connected despite the physical distance between them.

This story gives us a glimpse of human frailty and strength showing that no matter the age, personal circumstances or which side we find ourselves we can all remain inquisitive and open-minded against all odds.

SPIDER-MAN INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE

by The Welsh Reviewer - Age 13 1/2

PLOT SUMMARY

‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ (released in 2018) follows teenager Miles Morales whose life will be turned upside down from a single key event in his universe. However, there isn’t just one Spider person in his universe there is in fact five other Spider people from other ‘spider-verses’. Miles Morales job is to send them home and stop the main villain Kingpin (or his real name Wilson Frisk) from destroying Miles’ whole universe.

CHARACTERS AND CAST

The main character in this film is Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) alongside the five other Spider people: Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson), Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), Spider-ham/ Peter Porker (John Mulaney), Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn) and Spider-man Noir (Nicolas Cage) and Stan Lee as himself.

WHY IT’S GOOD TO WATCH.

This film in my opinion is one of the greatest pieces of animation you will ever see, as the animation aims for a comic book feeling. As well as the animation, the soundtrack is one of the best. Daniel Pemberton can take all the credit for this films score. The songs Sunflower (Post Malone and Swae Lee) and What’s Up Danger (Blackway and Black Caviar) are just two of many brilliant songs used in the film. Finally, the plot is perfect and intertwines with the sequel ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ and is on point for an almost two-hour film.

FACTS, AWARDS AND TRIVIA

Now comes for the interesting part - the facts. Let’s start with the awards. It will

come as no surprise that this film won many awards including an Oscar for ‘Best Animation Feature Film’ as well as two BAFTA awards. In total it won eighty-five awards and nominated for sixty-one more. The film was originally dedicated to the Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko, however when the film was released Stan Lee passed away, so in the end the film was dedicated to both.

In the credits an image pops up of Stan Lee’s iconic glasses with his quote “That person who helps others simply because it should or must be done, and because it is the right thing to do, is indeed without a doubt, a real superhero”.

Stan Lee makes many cameos in animation throughout the film and even had a speaking part.

Finally, my favourite detail is when Peter B. Parker and Miles are running away from a mysterious foe. Peter throws a bagel and it hits a victim. The film makers use a throwback to the classic comic book action captions “Bagel”.

In conclusion, this is by far one of my favourite films and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to watch an action-packed animation adventure film.

Overall, I would rate it 10 out of 10.

SUMMER RECIPE

BAKED CAPRESE CHICKEN

This savoury yet filling meal is fancy enough for a ‘special meal’ but quick and easy enough for busy weeknights. Served with a lovely side salad and new potato’s.

Baked caprese chicken is tender, juicy, and delicious, topped with fresh tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, fresh basil, and a good drizzle of balsamic glaze. The balsamic vinegar marinade tenderises the chicken breasts that rest between the burst cherry tomatoes and melted mozzarella cheese.

INGREDIENTS

Chicken breasts

Cherry tomatoes

Mozzarella balls

Fresh basil

Italian seasoning - (or dried oregano)

Balsamic vinegar

Olive oil

Salt and pepper

METHOD

1. Marinate the chicken. In an airtight bag combine chicken breasts with olive oil, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper and 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar. Press air out of the

bag and seal tightly. Massage the seasoning around the chicken to coat. Let it marinate for at least 15 minutes, up to overnight in the fridge. Alternatively marinate in a large bowl and cover with cling film.

2. Bake the chicken. Arrange marinated chicken in a large baking tray. Add tomatoes and distribute them evenly in the pan. Bake in a 200c preheated oven for 20 minutes until the tomatoes are soft.

3. Add mozzarella balls. Remove the tray from the oven and add mozzarella balls evenly over the chicken. Return the tray to the oven and continue baking for another 10-15 minutes until the melted cheese turns golden brown and the chicken is cooked.

4. Make the balsamic glaze. Add the remaining balsamic vinegar to a small pan. Let it simmer for over low heat until thickened and reduced by half (about 5-7 minutes), stirring occasionally. Alternatively use a pre-bought balsamic glaze.

Allow the baked chicken to rest for 10 minutes. Then, drizzle the balsamic reduction/glaze on top. Garnish with basil and serve warm.
