Why I Attend Pursue

August 1995, I hopped on the church van with women from Trinity Baptist Church in Amarillo heading to Waco to attend Texas Leadership Conference, TLC, along with 2,500 plus women attending Session 1. I was serving as Minister to Children and Families at Trinity and was also on the Associational WMU Leadership Team as Mission Friends Director. I was engaged in WMU but this was my first TLC. I knew the meeting would be good but I didn’t know how life changing it would be.

I attended conferences for Mission Friends® and Girls in Action® leaders.

I was encouraged by the vivacious Marsha Spradlin, WMU staff member, along with the team of conference leaders who were prepared and inspiring. Their love and passion for missions was contagious.

General Sessions were held in Waco Hall where women of all ages gathered to worship together. The memory of voices joining together in singing “We’ve a Story to Tell to the Nations” still moves me today.

Missionaries shared stories of how God was moving among the peoples of the world and how many were coming to know Jesus as Savior.

The following year, I shifted from participant to staff member joining the team as GA/Mission Friends Consultant. At the closing General Session, I found myself sitting in the balcony. This bird's eye view provided a glorious image of the power of women committed to missions!

Twenty-eight years later, women are still committed to taking the gospel to the world and are returning to Waco! Won’t you join me at Pursue 2024?

Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain.

– Psalm 127:1 I’m so glad we aren’t laboring in vain because the Lord is building this house. If it weren’t for Him, none of us would be doing this. He put in our hearts the burden for helping others. He made a way for each of us to come. He led each of us here at this time, in this place to build this home for the Chavarria-Jimenez family. God prepared this team with our varied talents for such a time as this.

Unless God builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Or since God built this house, we as builders did not labor in vain. The family will be changed forever. Yes, changed to live forever and ever!

God is the reason this crew of experienced and inexperienced builders gather to build this house, as each one has trusted God so fully that the only explanation for the experience is Him.

What a joy it has been serving with each of you! Love you all!

I could tell this team knew Jesus because that is the only explanation that would bring each of us to Peñitas to help build a house. When I tell people I’m going to the valley to help build a home for a family, some think it’s a great thing to do. Those of the world, though, are mystified that we would take time when we could be vacationing, to help others.

They don’t understand that God has called us to help build this home for God’s glory. And we have fun doing it!

1 John 2:5-6 says, “but when we obey God’s teaching, his love is truly working in us.” This is how we know that we are living in him. If we say we live in God, we must live like Jesus lived.

Making jewelry may seem like such a simple hobby, but through this little hobby, God has opened a door for sharing the gospel.

When I started making jewelry, I never imagined that God would use it so much! As I would talk with young girls and teens about my jewelry, I began to wonder what I could do to share with them the light of Jesus.

Through that desire Jesus inspired me to make my gospel necklace.

Hanging on a simple chain are eight charms communicating the gospel. ♦ The dark gem represents our sin. ♦ The red gem and the cross represent Jesus’s blood He shed for our sins. ♦ The white gem and heart represent how Jesus’s blood washed away our sins from our hearts. ♦ The green gem and tree represent our growth in Christ. ♦ Finally, the golden gem represents heaven and how Jesus is the only way to heaven.

1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for God’s glory.”

In the late 1930's my Mom was a young pre-teen living in Grand Prairie, Texas. She was raised in a hardworking, all-American family, but not one that prioritized a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ. My Mom was familiar with biblical stories, but certainly was not influenced by the truths of being a Christ-follower.

At least not at home.

In those days kids played in the street. No such thing as splash pads or video games. They were left to outside camaraderie with peers. As God would have it, around the corner from my Mom's house was First Baptist, Grand Prairie. My Mom was always curious about the church and wondered what it would be like to attend. One day a woman from the church, on her way to teach Girls in Action® (GA's), noticed my Mom in the street. The Holy Spirit prompted her to stop and ask my Mom if she wanted to go with her. Without asking her parents (who probably would not have agreed), my Mom went to GA's that night where she heard the full gospel story for the first time.

Week after week this messenger from God stopped by to invite Mom to GA’s. Then, on a Wednesday night during GA’s, Mom accepted Jesus as her personal Lord and Savior. She was later baptized, without her parents' knowledge, and went on to not only be a light for her immediate family but to then raise her own children and grandchildren with a commitment to the Word of God. For over 50 years Mom worked with children of all ages to share the gospel through the recounting of Bible stories. Had it not been for the faithful work of WMU to reach young people for Christ, perhaps even 8

my own salvation story would not have been written.

A Life Shaped by WM

What does a life shaped by WMU look like? For Nayely Vallejo, it looks like a life of giving, growing and being molded into a strong Christian leader. Through her time as a GA (Girls in Action®) and Acteen, Vallejo loved helping with missions projects, visiting nursing homes and meeting missionaries. She saw that even as a young child, she could make an impact for Christ in the places where she served.

“I love the mission of WMU; GA's and Acteens all had such a formative impact on me.

And camp was such a big part of who I became. I love giving back. I want people my age to see that WMU is for us too. It’s not just for older generations.

We can get involved in missions now.”

THE BRIDGE

Throughout college, Vallejo served as an Acteen leader at Freeman Baptist Church in Garland, Texas, followed by two years of service on the WMU Executive Board starting in 2020. During her time on the board, she encouraged other young women to get involved in WMU and pursue their call to missions.

Now, she is director of the GA Camp in Dallas Association and also serves as office manager for the WMU of Texas state office.

Camp Fusion trains up the next generation of intercultural church leaders WRITTEN BY BONNIE HIRSCHFELD

Many campers describe Camp Fusion as a slice of heaven - filled with all languages and students from all different nationalities. The camp provides an opportunity for students from Texas Baptists Intercultural churches to gather together, worship the Lord, and grow as leaders in their own churches. For former camper and current camp director Faith Dagohoy-Bentulan, it is one of the best places in the world.

“I don’t know if there’s another camp like this.

There’s so many languages being spoken, and yet all of the kids have so much in common,” she said.

Churches from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East send their students to connect with other second-generation students and grow spiritually. It is also a place for students to grow as spiritual leaders, and many return as camp counselors and support staff after graduation.

In fact, the camp is entirely volunteer-run, mostly by former campers.

“The leadership opportunities here translate outside of camp,” Dagohoy-Bentulan said.

“Serving at camp has equipped people to be leaders in their own churches, homes, and schools.”

In 2023, 381 middle and high school students and leaders from 26 churches and 15 different cultures attended Camp Fusion. Twelve students made the decision to follow Christ for the first time, and 66 recommitted themselves to Jesus. Students also made commitments to help lead their youth groups, invite a friend to Bible study and be involved in cross-cultural missions. Fifty-six students said they felt a calling to full-time Christian service.

The Mary Hill Davis Offering for Texas Missions allows Camp Fusion to offer meals to campers, leadership training, and scholarships to those who could not attend otherwise. Camp Fusion is training the next generation of intercultural church leaders and connecting cultures to glorify Christ. It truly is “a slice of heaven.”

A Christian Women's Job Corps Story

STORY BY CHELSEA W.

I was raised in a single parent household with a father who was drug addicted, and in and out of prison my whole life. I was always missing something. I had dealt with a tremendous amount of trauma by the time I was in my adult years, and found myself latching on to unhealthy, toxic relationships. There came a day when I became a single parent raising three children.

At the age of 30 I fell into an extremely abusive, narcissistic relationship. My abuser introduced me to drugs and used them to control me. The abuse steadily increased to the point where I almost lost my life. At the end of this five-year nightmare I was alive, but I was just an empty shell of a human. I was going through the motions, but my soul, or who I was as a person was missing completely. I had lost touch with my inner being. I found myself self-medicating, using daily just to get out of bed. I was pushing myself farther into darkness having no light to pull myself from this. My life continued to spiral downward. I became involved with the wrong people, being in the wrong places at the wrong times and found myself in Kendall County Jail on February 2, 2023.

I will never forget my first class, or meeting Monay and the other amazing women who volunteer their time. Walking into that first class was the first step into my life being changed forever. Week after week, class after class, I was being filled. My soul was ignited with Scripture. I was gaining knowledge that gave me the power and courage to overcome my past. It was because of this program that within the walls of Kendall County Jail, I was healing.

In these last 5 months I have had an abundance of love and support from my family. I have also been blessed with the most amazing church family here in Boerne. I completed my High School Equivalency Diploma and I’m now working at Starlite Recovery and Rehabilitation as a behavioral health associate.

Christian Women’s Job Corps taught me that by having the faith of a tiny mustard seed you will say move to your mountain, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. This is a Scripture that I share daily with my clients, planting seeds of hope and faith and using my testimony to encourage the possibility of change. I graduated from the program on April 11, 2023, and was released from Kendall County Jail on April 14. I walked with my head held high knowing that I was a child of God, that God has a plan for me, and I have a purpose to fulfill.

Little did I know that Pod A would become my new home for the next 74 days. I remember walking into the tank and seeing one of the girls sitting at the table working on a workbook. I inquired as to what she was doing, and she told me that she was in the Christian Women’s Job Corps program, and I should sign up for the next round of classes. Thank God I did.

Project: Start helps refugees create new homes and shares the love of Christ

At 5 a.m. every morning, a refugee family struggled to contain the sewage water that spilled out of the toilet in their new apartment in Vickery Meadow, a neighborhood in Northeast Dallas. They asked the apartment managers multiple times to fix the issue, but they refused to help. New to America, the family did not know English or how to fix the situation. Desperate, they contacted Pastor Helen Cingpi, director of Project:Start Refugee Resource Center.

She called the City of Dallas, filed a formal complaint and worked with the family until the situation was resolved.

Challenges like language barriers, new cultures, new bureaucratic systems, and more can refugees in Vickery Meadow to build a healthy, safe life in their new country. In addition to intervening in difficult situations, Project:Start also helps connect refugees to resources for English classes, set up bank accounts, and fill out job applications along with everything else needed to settle into life in a new place. They visit weekly with clients, building relationships

“Our goal is to make refugees feel welcome and loved and build strong friendships,” Cingpi explained. “As the friendship grows, we are able to share Jesus with them. Helping with their physical needs leads to spiritual conversations.”

Ser una Reyna fue un sueño hecho realidad, Auxiliar de Niñas intermedias fue una experiencia inolvidable: incluia memorizar versos Biblicos, hacer actividades para ayudar a mi ciudad, mi familia, mi Iglesia, compartiendo la Salvacion de Almas: Misiones.

Al llegar a la Auxiliar de Señoritas aprendi mas acerca de mi responsabilidad en la Obra Misionera; los jovenes y señoritas de nuestra Iglesia participabamos activamente en las Misiones, nos ivamos los domingos despues del Servicio a las ciudades y pueblos predicando palabra de Salvacion acompañada de accion: llevabamos despensas, zapatos, ropa, visitabamos por las casas, teniamos Servicios de Alabanza en los parques, etc.

Todo esto para Honra y Gloria de Nuestro Salvador.

Auxiliar de Señoritas quedo grabado en mi mente y en mi corazon cuando la Hermana consejera nos dijo: "pidele a Dios por tu futuro esposo", esto significaba otro sueño por cumplir: llegar a ser miembro de la Union de Mujeres Misioneras (WMU).

Dios es Bueno!! Hoy tengo la Bendicion de ser miembro de WMU of Texas Hispanic Ministry. Aportando con mucho amor un granito de arena para la Obra Misionera.

– Salmo 127:1 Estoy tan contenta de que no estemos trabajando en vano porque el Señor está construyendo esta casa. Si no fuera por Él, ninguno de nosotros estaría haciendo esto. El puso en nuestros corazones la carga de ayudar a otros. El hizo un camino para que cada uno de nosotros viniera. Él nos guió a cada uno de nosotros aquí en este momento, en este lugar para construir esta casa para la familia Chavarría-Jiménez. Dios preparó este equipo con nuestros diversos talentos para un momento como este.

Si Dios no construye la casa, en vano trabajan sus constructores. O como Dios construyó esta casa, nosotros como constructores no trabajamos en vano. La familia cambiará para siempre. Sí, ¡cambiada para vivir por los siglos de los siglos!

Podría decir que este equipo conocía a Jesús porque esa es la única explicación que nos traería a cada uno de nosotros a Peñitas para ayudar a construir una casa. Cuando le digo a la gente que voy al valle a ayudar a construir una casa para una familia, algunos piensan que es algo estupendo. A los del mundo, sin embargo, les desconcierta que nos tomemos tiempo libre, cuando podríamos estar de vacaciones, para ayudar a los demás. No entienden que Dios nos ha llamado aquí para ayudar a construir este hogar para la gloria de Dios. ¡Y nos divertimos haciéndolo!

Cuando empecé a hacer joyeria, ¡nunca imaginé que Dios las usaría tanto!

Cuando hablaba con chicas jóvenes y adolescentes sobre mis joyas, empecé a preguntarme qué podía hacer para compartir con ellas la luz de Jesús.

A través de ese deseo, Jesús me inspiró para hacer mi collar evangélico.

De una sencilla cadena cuelgan ocho dijes que comunican el Evangelio. ♦ La gema oscura representa nuestro pecado. ♦ La gema roja y la cruz representan la sangre que Jesús derramó por nuestros pecados. ♦ La gema blanca y el corazón representan cómo la sangre de Jesús lavó nuestros pecados de nuestros corazones. ♦ La gema verde y el árbol representan nuestro crecimiento en Cristo ♦ Por último, el gen dorado representa el Cielo y cómo Jesús es el único camino al Cielo.

A Tito le encanta bromear y hacerse amigo de cualquier niño que conoce.

Pero después de que una tragedia golpeara su ciudad natal, tuvo que pasar un tiempo en el campamento para reencontrarse a sí mismo.

Proyecto: Start ayuda a los refugiados a crear nuevos hogares y comparte el amor de Cristo

A las 5 de la mañana de cada día, una familia de refugiados luchaba por contener el agua residual que salía del inodoro de su nuevo apartamento en Vickery Meadow, un barrio del noreste de Dallas. Pidieron varias veces a los encargados del apartamento que arreglaran el problema, pero se negaron a ayudarles. La familia, recién llegada a Estados Unidos, no sabía inglés ni cómo solucionar el problema. Desesperados, se pusieron en contacto con la pastora Helen Cingpi, directora del Centro de Recursos para Refugiados Project:Start. Llamó a la ciudad de Dallas, presentó una queja formal y trabajó con la familia hasta que se resolvió la situación.

Desafíos como las barreras del idioma, nuevas culturas, nuevos sistemas burocráticos, y más pueden hacer que sea difícil para los refugiados para adaptarse a la vida en Estados Unidos.

Project:Start sirve como recurso para que los refugiados de Vickery Meadow puedan construir una vida sana y segura en su nuevo país. Además de intervenir en situaciones difíciles, Project:Start también ayuda a poner en contacto a los refugiados con recursos para que reciban clases de inglés, abran cuentas bancarias y llenen solicitudes de empleo, junto con todo lo necesario para adaptarse a la vida en un nuevo lugar. Visitan semanalmente a los clientes, forjando relaciones y estableciendo vínculos para toda la vida.

En 2023, Project:Start vio una afluencia de refugiados ucranianos, además de familias de Afganistán, Birmania y países de toda África. Las contribuciones de la Ofrenda Mary Hill Davis para las Misiones de Texas ayudan a la organización a proporcionar artículos domésticos básicos a estos recién llegados. Cingpi contó que el año pasado, la ofrenda para las misiones de Texas permitió a Project:Start ayudar a un nuevo refugiado a comprar herramientas para poner en marcha un negocio de construcción. Ahora puede mantener a su familia.

"Nuestro objetivo es hacer que los refugiados se sientan bienvenidos y queridos, y forjar amistades sólidas", explica Cingpi. "A medida que crece la amistad, podemos compartir a Jesús con ellos.

¿Cómo es una vida moldeada por la WMU? Para Nayely Vallejo, se parece a una vida de dar, de crecer y de ser moldeada en un líder cristiano fuerte. Durante su tiempo como GA (Girls in Action) y Acteen, a Vallejo le encantaba ayudar en proyectos misioneros, visitar residencias de ancianos y conocer a misioneros. Vio que incluso siendo una niña, podía tener un impacto para Cristo en los lugares donde servía.

"Me encanta la misión de la WMU; GAs y Acteens tuvieron un impacto formativo en mí. Y el campamento fue una parte muy importante de la persona en la que me convertí. Me encanta devolver", dijo. "Quiero que la gente de mi edad vea que la WMU también es para nosotros.

Durante la universidad, Vallejo sirvió como líder de Acteen en su iglesia, Freeman Heights Baptist Church seguido de dos años de servicio en la Junta Ejecutiva de la WMU a partir de 2020. Durante su tiempo en la Junta, animó a otras mujeres jóvenes a participar en la Unión Femenina Mundial y seguir su llamado a las misiones.

Ahora, es directora del Campamento GA en la Asociación de Dallas y también se desempeña como gerente de la oficina de la Unión Femenina Mundial de Texas.

Me crié en un hogar monoparental con un padre drogadicto que entró y salió de la cárcel toda mi vida.

Siempre me faltaba algo. Cuando llegué a la edad adulta, había sufrido muchos traumas y me vi atrapada en relaciones malsanas y tóxicas. Llegó un día en que me convertí en madre soltera con tres hijos.

A los 30 años caí en una relación extremadamente abusiva y narcisista. Mi agresor me introdujo en las drogas y las utilizó para controlarme. El maltrato fue en aumento hasta el punto de que casi pierdo la vida. Al final de esta pesadilla de cinco años, estaba viva, pero no era más que una cáscara vacía de ser humano. Hacía lo que debía, pero mi alma o lo que yo era como persona había desaparecido por completo. Había perdido el contacto con mi ser interior. Me automedicaba a diario sólo para levantarme de la cama. Me hundía cada vez más en la oscuridad sin tener luz para salir de ella. Mi vida siguió cayendo en espiral. Me involucre con la gente equivocada, estando en los lugares equivocados en los momentos equivocados encontré en la carcel del condado de Kendall el 2 de febrero de 2023.

En estos últimos 5 meses he tenido una abundancia de amor y apoyo de mi familia. También he sido bend ecida con la familia de la iglesia más increíble aquí en Boerne. Completé mi Diploma de Equivalencia de Escuela Secundaria y ahora estoy trabajando en Starlite Recuperación y Rehabilitación como asociado de salud mental.

Christian Women's Job Corps me enseñó que teniendo la fe de un pequeño grano de mostaza dirás muévete a tu montaña, y se moverá. Nada será imposible para ti. Esta es una Escritura que comparto a diario con mis clientes, plantando semillas de esperanza y fe y utilizando mi testimonio para alentar la posibilidad del cambio. Nunca olvidaré mi primera clase, ni el conocer a Monay y a las otras increíbles mujeres que ofrecen su tiempo como voluntarias. Entrar en esa primera clase fue el primer paso para que mi vida cambiara para siempre. Semana tras semana, clase tras clase, me llenaban. Mi alma se encendía con las Escrituras.

Adquiría conocimientos que me daban el poder y el valor para superar mi pasado. Fue gracias a este programa que dentro de las paredes de Kendall County Jail me estaba curando.

Poco me imaginaba que el módulo A se convertiría en mi nuevo hogar durante los siguientes 74 días.

Recuerdo que entré en el depósito y vi a una de las chicas sentada a la mesa trabajando en un cuaderno de ejercicios. Le pregunté qué estaba haciendo y me dijo que estaba en el programa Christian Women's Job Corps y que debía apuntarme a la siguiente ronda de clases. Gracias a Dios que lo hice.
