King Solomon reminds us of the value of partnership as we pursue the will of God. In Ecclesiastes 4:9, it says “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil.” For such a time as this, when the population of Texas continues to grow exponentially and when the opportunity for ministry in every neighborhood exists, it is imperative that we see ourselves as co-laborers in faith. The work in our state is definitely plentiful; however, based upon the impending demographic shifts, we need more ministry efforts to impact our state for the Kingdom.

We are blessed to witness the formation of community missions groups that allow individuals in congregations that no longer have the age-level WMU missions groups to continue their involvement in missions discipleship with like-minded individuals from various churches in their community. This model enhances the group’s diversity of thought and perspective as participants serve and learn…together. Likewise, the Lord continues to open doors for ministry along the border of Texas and Mexico.

Our churches are partnering with our Texas Baptist River Ministry missionaries as they share love and show Christ.

Indeed, it will take all of us to serve Texas in this season.

We have been equipped for ministry to meet needs and equipped to stand against the enemy… together.

I look forward to seeing you and serving with you this fall as we visit your churches. We are better... together!

iscipleship is an interesting word. The root word is disciple, meaning a follower of a teacher, leader, philosopher, and for us as believers, Jesus. Most of us are familiar with this definition. Let’s take this one more step.

What does it mean to follow? It means going in the same direction with a common goal, to become more like Jesus.

Discipleship is the process of guiding, developing, and leading someone to become Christlike. Process indicates that discipleship is a journey. Molding, changing, transforming are all processes leading us to a deeper and more intimate relationship with Jesus and becoming more like Him in how we live, how we view the world, and how we engage with others in daily living.

What sets missions discipleship apart from discipleship?

Missions discipleship weaves God’s missional heart with a Biblical worldview. One can be disciplined, establishing disciplines such as studying, praying, and giving but can miss connecting their part in God’s redemptive plan for all people leading to missional living.

The process of missions discipleship includes building relationships, studying Scripture, striving for obedience, and serving together. This is what Jesus did with the twelve. They were a messy bunch who lived life together. Jesus accepted them as they were and taught them things they did not yet understand. The twelve as well as other significant followers of Jesus changed the world by engaging with others the way He engaged with them.

iscipulado es una palabra interesante. La raíz de la palabra es discipulo, que significa seguidor de un maestro, lider, filósofo, y para nosotros como creyentes, Jesús. Significa ir en la misma dirección con una meta en común de ser más como Jesús.

Discipulado es el proceso de guiar, desarrollar, guiar a alguién a ser como Jesús. Proceso significa que el discipulado es un camino. Moldear, cambiar y transformer, son procesos que nos guian a una relación más profunda e intima con Jesús.

Brenda Bourgeois is serving her second year as VicePresident and calls Lubbock home. She is involved in WMU across the city and association. Where you find Brenda, you will find women and children with whom she has built relationships resulting in missions discipleship. From leading adults to directing camp, Brenda leads with a servant heart.

“And Jesus gathered all the preachers and teachers together and said, “Fellas, you have a unique calling and qualification that gives you the high responsibility to be an elite team who will teach people the secret of being like me so there will be more preachers and teachers.

It’s all on you because you’re the only ones I trust to do it right.”

however, have glimpses into some of the character qualities and habits of a follower of Jesus that we can contemplate to envision a definition that gives us a sense of direction.

If you’re wondering what version of the Bible that is, you can just call it the GMUV (Goofy Messed Up Version).

On mission: There is a sense of purpose and direction to my life. I realize that I’ve been invited into an adventure that is bigger than me and I accept the invitation.

You probably don’t need to be reminded that the Great Commission—make disciples of all peoples—was not given to a select, uniquely qualified group of preachers and teachers.

Let’s unpack that a little.

Christ-life: I love this idea from Dallas Willard that the question is not,“What would Jesus do?” The question is, “What would Jesus do if He were me?”

It’s for all of us—in all times and all places—who are followers of Jesus.

The Christ-life is Jesus living His life IN me, THROUGH me, AS me. (See Galatians 2:20)

But how in the world are ordinary people supposed to do that? That’s way too much pressure without special training and education! What if we mess it up?

He did not create me as a clone, but as a unique person through whom He desires to display His beauty and glory as I joyfully learn to walk in step with Him—loving who He loves, doing what He says, and demonstrating His character.

I think our branch of the faith family tree has a history of over-complicating faith with performancebased anxiety.

Let me encourage you to take a deep breath and let Jesus set you free from that anxiety.

You can be a partner with Jesus in disciple-making.

I’m not kidding! You just need to be able to answer two questions.

Here’s the first one: Who is a disciple?

Did you know that the New Testament doesn’t give us an official definition of a disciple? We do, 4

Here’s mine: A disciple of Jesus is a person who is on mission to live out the Christ-life.

The second question: How do I partner with Jesus in discipling people?

The simplest answer is to walk this Christ-life journey in a community of travelers. Learn from those who have walked further than you. Slow down to walk alongside someone who is not quite as far along the path as you are. Let them see His life lived out joyfully in you and give them support and encouragement on their own journey.

You? A disciple-maker?

You’re invited. Will you?

 Disciple Yourself Out of a Job   STORY BY TERI USSERY

“Your challenge is to disciple yourself out of a job.”

Scripture shows us God’s mandate to disciple. Jesus had the twelve. The twelve discipled others. Priscilla and Aquilla discipled Paul. Paul discipled Timothy. Elijah discipled Elisha. The message of the gospel is alive and well after two thousand years because of faithful followers who discipled themselves out of a job.

The task may seem daunting, but here are some ideas for just how you can get started.

ɣ Ask God to show you a Person of Peace. The book

of Acts gives us numerous examples of the early Christ-followers seeking out a person who opens the door for gospel or ministry conversations into their social, generational, or cultural group. Consider the next generation as your people group to disciple.

ɣ Pray for the relationship you will build. How can you

come alongside the person God has shown you?

Find ways to encourage them. Begin to disciple them according to the gifts you see God using through them.

ɣ Share ministry opportunities together, working alongside your Person of Peace.

It is exciting to watch God at work in the next generation.

There is a new excitement and desire among them to engage with others to meet needs and share the love of Christ.

Research the culture of the younger generations. What motivates them? What compels them to action? How do they build relationships with each other? How can you come alongside and encourage the younger generation?

Consider the next generation as a culture group. Each generation has distinctives that describe them. When we engage ethnic groups, we don’t try to redefine them, we seek to learn how to engage them most effectively in their context with the gospel. The same is true of generational distinctives.

I think there are three key words that can direct how we disciple future generations. Listen, Learn, and Love.

Listen. What do they think? How do they process? What is the cry of their heart? How do they relate most effectively with others? Listen with your ears and eyes and hear them with your heart.

Learn. Consider what you’ve heard and allow it to inform your actions and interactions. Sometimes that means adjusting how you relate to others. Adapt to their communication methods as much as possible. Connect with them in ways most meaningful to them.

Love. Jesus reminds us that the second greatest commandment after loving God is loving others. Loving means building relationships. Loving means listening and learning. Loving means considering others above ourselves.

With that in mind, let’s consider some ways we can encourage each other along the way to be whole-hearted Christ-followers who live on mission.

You have many opportunities to engage with other adults. Consider your season of life to discover ways to connect with peers. Here are some ideas for you to consider as you build community with the goal of making disciples along your journey.

PA R E N T S W ITH C H I LD R E N Parents with children still at home can engage with other parents whose children share interests with your children. Consider ways you can connect with ministry in your community to support families and children.

Consider inviting other families to volunteer with your church to minister to the underserved in your community.

Look for ways you can connect with others in your church or community who share your life-season and be creative with ways to engage in your community to share Jesus.

R E T I R E D A D U LT S Encourage retired adults to connect in schools as mentors or volunteers, especially in underserved communities. Opportunities range from volunteering as a mentor to a student, to helping in classrooms, to even being a room parent in schools where there isn’t a lot of parental engagement.

S E N I O R A D U LT S Senior adults may have some physical limitations so consider providing opportunities to prayer walk or prayer drive in different areas of your community to pray for ministry opportunities in those areas. Consider partnering senior adult groups with youth experiences where the seniors are the prayer support during youth camp or Disciple Now weekends. Create an adult prayer group that meets during youth discipleship weekly to pray while the students meet.

EMPT Y NESTERS Empty nesters may have more time flexibility, so consider planning short- or long-term mission trips to share the gospel locally, or internationally.

Ahelpful to have someone guiding us as we gradually become able to stand on our own to

experience success independently. Discipling is like learning a new activity, only we don’t become independent. Instead, we learn to be increasingly dependent on the Father, who equips us through the Holy Spirit to overcome the trials and pressures of this life and become more Christ-like. That increased dependency is a strengthened relationship with God through his son, Jesus. Christ obeyed the Father (John 6:38), loved others (John.15:9-13), made more disciples (John.8:31), produced good fruit (Matthew. 4:19), and remained firm in his conviction (John.14:6). Jesus’ obedience, love, actions, and steadfastness model a relationship-oriented approach to discipling others. Discipling is staying actively engaged in the training of others who have committed to becoming a follower of Christ and are willing to lead a life that exalts our Father.

Christ on earth was someone who would walk and talk with others. This is key for discipleship to be effective. Let’s not assume new believers, on their own, will miraculously learn how to grow spiritually and become an active disciple without any guidance. As mature Christians, we understand that a new believer also needs to learn how to become aware of and understand the Holy Spirit that dwells within them. We know the journey a new believer is about to embark upon, we have experienced the first steps, the falls, the frustration, and the joy it is to trust God in the process. This has equipped us to equip others.

I want to encourage you to go the extra mile and disciple those who receive and accept the gospel of Jesus Christ. ♦ Think of your walk and remember those who prayed for you as you started your journey.

Ask the Lord to place someone in your life to disciple and begin praying for them and the relationship you both are about to build. ♦ Our experience allows us to be intentional about starting relationships with new believers. Do not be afraid to talk to them, walk with them, and sit with them. These actions help ease any nerves and build trust. This trust is needed so they feel safe asking questions and expressing concerns. ♦ Our experience allows us to be real with new believers. They need to know we understand.

Don’t be afraid to use the phrase “I struggle/struggled with this/that.” This allows them to see our humanity and brings us to a more personal level with them.

The purpose of discipling is that new believers become disciples who make disciples for Christ.

by Jesus, and is committed to the mission of Jesus.”

– Bobby Harrington, discipleship.org A disciple is someone who ‘follows Jesus.’ The New Testament uses the word “Christian” only 3 times. The word “disciple” shows up 296 times in the New International Version. This means the English word “disciple” appears 99 times more often than the word “Christian.”

As we follow Jesus, we change. The New Testament promises that, as we pursue God’s glory, the Holy Spirit transforms us into His image (2 Corinthians 3:18). When Jesus told Peter and Andrew, “I will make you become” (Mark 1:17, ESV), He was promising core transformation.

As we read the disciples’ stories, that’s precisely what we see.

The change Jesus brings in our lives leads us to model our lives after Jesus. We join with the disciples in a commitment to “fish for people.” In this, we learn to make disciples as Jesus made disciples. To be a mature disciple of Jesus is to become a disciple-maker like Jesus. It is a natural process: we follow Jesus, we are changed by Jesus, and—as we follow the one who spent His time making disciples—we commit to making disciples as He did.

Loving people as Jesus loved people through service at Christian Job Corps sites across Texas means that we want to see people come to faith in Jesus and embrace God’s kingdom rule in their lives (John 13:34). Because we love people and want God’s best for them, we want to help them become disciples and grow as disciples.

Each site designs its own discipleship ministry that fits its unique schedule and volunteer base. However, all sites share some core characteristics. We accept our participants just as they are, yet we see and believe for what they can become as they surrender their lives to Jesus. We work from a strength-based perspective acknowledging the strengths of the participants and following their lead in making decisions and seeking direction for their lives. We encourage those volunteers who disciple participants to be authentic and open sharing their own testimonies including successes and failures. This helps participants see that maturing in Christ is a process, not just a one-time confession of faith.

Ways to Celebrate the Mary Hill Davis Offering® and the Week of Prayer for Texas Missions

Promoting the Mary Hill Davis Offering during the Week of Prayer for Texas Missions (typically observed in September) can be as simple as providing Prayer Guides and Offering Envelopes in your church bulletin or placing them on an entry table to the Worship Center.

Providing a display table in a prominent area of your church will create interest.

The table might include a map of Texas with pin flags indicating where ministries are located who receive allocations from the offering. Also include the Week of Prayer poster and “Because You Give” facts.

&

Girls in Action and/or Royal Ambassadors can make items during their class times as a fundraiser. One idea is to gather teacups and saucers from church members and/or garage sales. The girls can plant small succulents in the cups and then glue the cups to the saucers. Create a table in a prominent area with information about Mary Hill Davis. For a donation to the offering, the recipient will receive a teacup as a reminder that Mary Hill Davis enjoyed drinking hot tea.

RA’s can participate by making and painting crosses as a fundraiser.

Ask to visit adult Sunday School classes to share for 3 minutes how gifts to the offering impacts lives across Texas and beyond. If time allows, show a video from our website.

Discipulado Efectivo STORY BY RUTH MENDOZA

ualquier actividad nueva que vayamos a realizar requiere que la aprendamos paso a paso. Es muy útil tener a alguien que nos guíe gradualmente hasta que seamos capaces de valernos

por nosotros mismos para experimentar el éxito de manera independiente. Discipular es como aprender una nueva actividad, solo que no nos volvemos independientes. Sino que, aprendemos a depender cada vez más del Padre quien nos equipa a través del Espíritu Santo para superar las pruebas y presiones de esta vida y para llegar a ser más como Cristo. Esa gran dependencia es una relación fortalecida con Dios a través de su hijo, Jesús. Cristo obedeció al Padre (Juan 6:38), amó a los demás (Juan 15:9-13), hizo más discípulos (Juan 8:31), produjo frutos buenos (Mateo 4:19), y permaneció firme en su convicción (Juan 14:6). La obediencia, el amor, las acciones y la firmeza de Jesús modelan un discipulado que se enfoca en relaciones personales. Discipular es mantenerse activamente involucrado en el entrenamiento de otros que se han comprometido a convertirse en seguidores de Cristo y están dispuestos a llevar una vida que exalte a nuestro Padre.

Cristo caminaba y hablaba con otros. Esto es clave para que el discipulado sea efectivo. No asumamos que los nuevos creyentes, por sí mismos, aprenderán milagrosamente cómo crecer espiritualmente y convertirse en un discípulo activo sin ninguna guía. Como cristianos maduros entendemos que el nuevo creyente debe aprender a entender al Espíritu Santo que mora dentro de ellos. Ya conocemos la jornada que un nuevo creyente está a punto de emprender, hemos vivido los primeros pasos, las caídas, la frustración y la alegría que es confiar en Dios durante este proceso. Esto nos ha equipado

Creo que hay tres palabras clave que pueden dirigir la forma en que discipulamos a las generaciones futuras.

Escuchar, Aprender y Amar.

Escuchar. ¿Qué piensan? ¿Cómo lo procesan? ¿Cuál es el clamor de su corazón? ¿Cómo se relacionan mejor con los demás? Escuche con sus oídos, y sus ojos, y con su corazón.

Aprender. Considere lo que ha oído y permita que influya en sus acciones e interacciones. A veces eso significa ajustar la forma de relacionarse con los demás. Adáptese a sus métodos de comunicación en la medida de lo posible. Conecta con ellos de la forma que les resulte más significativa.

Amar. Jesús nos recuerda que el segundo mandamiento más importante, después de amar a Dios, es amar a los demás. Amar significa establecer relaciones. Amar significa escuchar y aprender. Amar significa considerar a los demás por encima de nosotros mismos.

Elías discipuló a Eliseo. El mensaje del evangelio sigue vivo después de dos mil años gracias discipularon sin desmayar.

Investigue la cultura de las generaciones más jóvenes. ¿Qué les motiva? ¿Qué les impulsa a la acción? ¿Cómo se relacionan entre ellos? ¿Cómo puede usted acompañar y animar a las generaciones más jóvenes?

Con esto en mente, consideremos algunas maneras en las que podemos animarnos unos a otros a lo largo del camino para ser completamente seguidores de Cristo que viven en misión.

Usted tiene muchas oportunidades de como comprometerse con otros adultos. Considere su forma de vivir para descubrir maneras de conectarse con sus compañeros. Estas son algunas ideas que puede considerar para construir una comunidad con el objetivo de hacer discípulos a lo largo de su vida.

Los padres que aún tienen hijos en casa pueden relacionarse con otros padres cuyos hijos comparten intereses con los suyos. Considere formas de conectarse con el ministerio en su comunidad para apoyar a las familias y a los niños. Considere la posibilidad de invitar a otras familias a servir como voluntarios en su iglesia para ayudar a los más necesitados de su comunidad.

Los padres con hijos adultos pueden tener más flexibilidad de tiempo, así que considere la posibilidad de planificar viajes misioneros a corto o largo plazo para compartir el evangelio a nivel local o internacional.

Los adultos mayores pueden tener algunas limitaciones físicas, así que considere la posibilidad de ofrecer oportunidades para hacer caminatas de oración o viajes de oración en diferentes áreas de su comunidad para orar por oportunidades de ministerio en esas áreas. Un discípulo es alguien que ‘sigue a Jesús’. El Nuevo Testamento usa la palabra “cristiano” solo 3 veces. La palabra “discípulo” aparece 296 veces en la Nueva Versión Internacional. Esto significa que la palabra inglesa “discípulo” aparece 293 veces más que la palabra “cristiano”.

Al seguir a Jesús, cambiamos. El Nuevo Testamento promete que, mientras buscamos la gloria de Dios, el Espíritu Santo nos transforma a Su imagen (2 Corintios 3:18). Cuando Jesús les dijo a Pedro y Andrés: “Y haré que seáis” (Marcos 1:17, RVR 1960), estaba prometiendo una transformación central. Cuando leemos las historias de los discípulos, eso es precisamente lo que vemos.

El cambio que Jesús trae a nuestras vidas nos lleva a modelar nuestras vidas a la imagen de Jesús. Nos unimos a los discípulos en un compromiso de "pescar a personas".
