MESSAGE
FROM TAMIKO “I am only one, But still I am one, I cannot do everything, But still I can do something; And what I can do, I ought to do, And what I ought to do, I will do.” During the 1962 Texas WMU Annual Meeting in Fort Worth, Eula Mae Henderson shared the words above as a call to worship opening the meeting. Having served as the executive leader for over thirty years and in the organization prior to that season, Henderson realized it will take each of us to reach all of Texas. Her legacy of serving and giving is a testament to her heart for missions and her heart for Texas. From her example, we see the impact one individual can have when God leads them. Through our individual obedience to the call of God to serve, we can work together to share Christ. Since the formation of Woman’s Missionary Union of Texas in 1880, Texas Missions has been an opportunity for Baptists to unite, not only to meet the physical needs across our state but also to share Jesus Christ with the lost. For 140 years, WMU of Texas has existed to walk alongside our Baptist churches and institutions as they make disciples who make disciples. Today, even though our landscape has changed, we continue to work with small groups and individuals as they seek to serve in their cultural context and in their communities. As we reflect on the generosity of God to us in the past and as we trust Him to lead us in meeting the needs across the state of Texas through missions and ministry, I pray you will join us in looking forward to the future, accepting the challenge to be a part of God’s story in order to minister to our great state of Texas…. For we can all say “I am Texas Missions.” In His Name,
Tamiko C. Jones Executive Director-Treasurer WMU of Texas

A WORD
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Along the Journey, Together
From time to time I hear people say, “I wish there was something to do to help make a difference.” Well…wish no more. How about considering having a “Bundling Party” at the WMU of Texas offices. While some might not consider this much of a difference maker, it is an important contribution helping our WMU of Texas staff and as well as churches across the state. Three times a year the state office receives posters, prayer guides and envelopes to send to churches promoting the special mission offerings: Mary Hill Davis Offering for Texas Missions®, Lottie Moon Christmas Offering supporting IMB missionaries, and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering supporting NAMB missionaries. Each poster, prayer guide and envelope must be counted and put into bundles of 25 so when orders from churches are received, they can be quickly packaged and mailed in a timely manner. Will you consider planning a bundling party sometime? Contact Freddie Martinka at 214.828.5160 for details! What is your church doing to teach preschoolers? Have you ever struggled with ideas of what to do when you have one or more preschoolers in your care for an hour or so? Have you considered using the great resources WMU has for Mission Friends? These materials are written for ALL preschoolers, beginning at birth, and are developmentally/age appropriate. Check out these resources at www.wmu.com/missionfriends and see ideas for incorporating and developing a missions heart in our youngest. Before we know it, summer will be here! Children’s Missions Camp provide the opportunity for school-age children to enjoy the excitement of camp while challenged to be disciples who make disciples. Now is the time to make your plans. Check with your associational office or Teri Ussery at 214.828.5150 for information. These are just a few ideas for you to think about as you consider how to make a difference for missions in Texas. Earl Ann Bumpus President, WMU of Texas

Creative MISSION FRIENDS I’ve recently had the opportunity to work with a group of students at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary who have a heart to share missions as moms while still spending time with their preschoolers. As we have worked on getting their group off the ground, the moms wanted time with their children all together, then time for just the moms to gather and grow. As we looked at options for preschool play, I realized that Missions Friends material was the perfect solution. As these moms are gathering to equip themselves to minister on the mission field and in ministry, their children can be experiencing the strong mission foundation that Mission Friends provides.
What does this mean for you?
Perhaps your church doesn’t provide Mission Friends as a part of Wednesday night or Sunday night activities. But are there times when your church provides childcare for Bible studies or Women on Mission during the week? If so, this is a great opportunity for preschoolers to have Mission Friends! The curriculum for Mission Friends can provide activities, stories, and even snack ideas for your childcare workers to use. Many times, we can be a resource for our church staff by providing material that can help them as they plan for multiple activities throughout the week. Look for new opportunities to provide missions discipleship. Perhaps having Mission Friends during the week is the perfect answer for providing quality childcare at your church! By Teri Ussery Missional Lifestyle Strategist, WMU of Texas
A New Idea for GA! “I really want my daughter to experience GA’s, but my church doesn’t have a group. What can I do?” Tarrant Baptist Association has a great solution! Under the vision and leadership of Derinda Williams, Tarrant Association has begun a Community Girls in Action group. They meet on Tuesday night, so the activities don’t conflict with local church Wednesday night activities.
THE BRIDGE
Girls from across the association gather to experience missions discipleship, hear exciting missionary stories, plan missions activities, and go outside the doors of the building to actually BE on mission. For girls, grades 1st-6th, Girls in Action is an exciting, fun-filled group where instilling friendship, grace, love, and a passion for God and missions is at the core. GA is a great opportunity for girls to develop leadership skills and to grow in faith, service and friendship. Consider starting a community group where you are! Sheri
I AM 100% DIFFERENT
Sheri Wineriter, 2017 spring graduate, Christian Women’s Job Corps Kerr County, exclaimed, “I am 100% different.” She shared those words in an interview last fall while taping the Christian Women’s Job Corps® (CWJC) video for Texas. Sheri began the interview describing her life before CWJC. Sheri said, “Life before CWJC … it wasn’t a life, I was broken. I’d always been broken.” Her mother left her at an early age which led her down a path of making poor choices. Sheri described a life filled with drugs, prostitution, and the adult entertainment industry. She even shared that she was a madame for a time all while leading a double life. Sheri was trying to hold her world together being a mother to her boys. Her family had no idea about her other life “There was no life. Just drugs, money, and sex. I had love for God, but I didn’t know that He loved me because of what I was doing. How could he love me?” Sheri met with Ann Buck, Executive Director CWJC Kerr County, about the possibility of being enrolled in the CWJC program. She received a call two days later from staff indicating that she had been approved for the program.
0 2 20 In you missed engaging with us in 2019, don’t fret! You will have several opportunities to join us this year for ministry training and mission action, to include something new. Sisters Who Care is partnering with RECHARGE, a Texas Baptist Evangelism Ministry designed to give pastors and leaders the necessary tools to be effective in every area of ministry, while connecting them with other pastors and leaders for guidance, models, and mentoring.
THE BRIDGE
Sheri said, “I quit, and I didn’t sell myself anymore.” The first part of the story is what typically catches our attention but remember her statement, “I am 100% different!” Sheri shared that her class had Bible study, computer classes, and shared lunch together. “We were all learning things for the first time, and it was a bond. A bond that you can never break.” My mentor, Bonnie, would take me for coffee and lunch. She did not judge me for who I used to be. She believed in me and helped me begin attending church again.” Sheri was blessed with a job the day after graduation at Emerald Cottages Retirement Center. “It is my calling. I LOVE IT!” Sheri is active in the alumni program, brings lunches for interns, and volunteers on Mondays in the QuickBooks class. Recently, Sheri obtained an Activities Director Certificate and she now serves as the Activities Director at Emerald Cottages. She also assists senior adults in the community. Sheri shared that had she not completed CWJC, she would likely be dead or in prison. “I’m 100% different person. I’ve got the love of God in me and I love telling people.”

Missionary Home at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary It’s been a long day. Work has been good, but exhausting. The kids are completely spent from a tough day at school. So many commitments. You just need a place to relax. That place of respite for most of us, is behind the closed door, in the safety and security of our own home. Now, imagine, if you can, that you have just arrived on American soil after years in another country. It wasn’t a vacation, but a vocation. A vocation that pushed you to share your faith in a new and different context among a people unlike yourself. Your children have adjusted to school in another land very different from the U.S. After hours, or even days of travel, you long for a place to call home. Because you have left all you know of home on the mission field. How wonderful would it be for you to find a place to relax and refuel? A house ready for you to move in. A dwelling where others had prepared a home for you. We may have the opportunity to provide just such a place. Many churches in Texas have generously provided homes for missionaries on stateside assignment. WMU of Texas now has just such an opportunity. The World Missions Center (WMC) on the campus of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary has a duplex that sits abandoned. What once housed a research library, now has the opportunity for new life to be breathed into it, transforming it into a home. WMU of Texas, the WMC and Texas Baptist Men have a vision. We want to make this duplex into a home for two families at a time who are stateside. What a great place for missionary families to come and be refreshed. What an amazing opportunity for students to experience missionaries in residence who guide and mentor them as they explore their own call to international missions. What a wonderful way for us to carry on our mission to care for those who carry the Gospel across the globe! The plans for the house include renovations as well as providing outdoor space for children to play. Providing furniture and other amenities for the residents will be a part of the future plans, as well. Stay tuned for more information on how your group can get involved in helping to bless our stateside missionaries!

10th Anniversary
WOW! In October 2020, we will celebrate the 10th house build in South Texas! We look forward to a time of reunion with the families served over the years and a time to share hope with the community. Each year, we assemble two teams to build a home for a special family. In partnership with Buckner International, a family is selected as the annual recipient of the home. These families serve alongside the WMU of Texas teams to build their home. All skill levels are needed to successfully complete the home. Women serve by building, cleaning and preparing meals. Consider joining us on the build this year! Your gifts to the Mary Hill Davis Offering for Texas Missions® support the Women’s Build. THE BRIDGE
