| Who We Are WMU of Texas believes in intentionally making disciples by creatively engaging in local missions, establishing partnerships for missions, and empowering leaders for worldwide missions.

Understanding that missions is what believers do to reach beyond the needs of their congregations to witness and minister for the purpose of fulfilling the Great Commission, WMU of Texas designed the Mary Hill Davis Offering for Texas Missions® to advance Texas Baptists missionary efforts to help people come to know Christ.

In spite of the many challenges of 2020, you continued to support the mission of WMU of Texas as we sought new and exciting ways of making disciples who make disciples. Due to the global pandemic, I believe we all began to live in the intersection of pivoting, adapting, and innovating. Though difficult, our turn from business as usual as we adapted to the new requirements for reaching those we seek to serve has resulted in innovation beyond our expectation. We were able to promote mission projects related to the pandemic, encourage church and small group leaders, create community among small groups to foster idea sharing, and even equip individuals from around the US for missions discipleship through a virtual training event that established a new library of free resources for churches and individuals.

I am reminded in Romans 8:28 (ESV) that “for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

Like many of you, we experienced loss in 2020 but God continues to show us that loss is a necessary ingredient for growth. We are encouraged and hopeful for all that the future holds.

In 1907, Mary Hill Davis, a former president of WMU of Texas and the inspiration and namesake for our state missions offering, said “Dear fellow workers, let us face about and look onward and forward. Yesterday is not ours. Its records, with its sorrowful failures as well as its joyous triumphs are in God’s keeping. Ours is the privilege to borrow light out of the past that it may shed its beams upon the future.” This is such a relevant message for today. She knew the way forward was to gather all lessons learned while leaning into the future.

It has been through your gifts to the Mary Hill Davis Offering for Texas Missions® that we have been able to walk alongside churches and individuals as they engage in local missions, to establish meaningful partnerships with like-minded organizations for missions, and to empower our participants for worldwide missions.

For our legacy partners and those new in supporting God’s work through WMU of Texas, we are thankful for you and we pray to see you on our journey in 2021 as we continue to share the hope of Jesus Christ… in new and thoughtful ways.

WMU of Texas Executive Board of Directors began 2020 with great optimism, excitement, and lots of plans for a new year. Although God changed the way in which our plans were implemented, we remained faithful to His call.

New staff member Brandi Jones, social media and marketing specialist, could not have joined the staff at a better time. She brought expertise, vision and fresh ideas for the new virtual future we experienced.

Additionally, the board met two interns who have been working with the WMU staff: Kaylee Henderson, graduate student at Baylor, and Heidi Perry, graduate student at SWBTS. The nominating committee brought seven new nominees to join the board, and three others who were recognized for their time of service.

We received reports of God at work in the next generation as The Eula Mae Scholarship Committee announced four new scholarship recipients and five renewal applicants for the 2020-2021 academic year. We also celebrated Hannah Howard and Myriam Romero, two of the 2020 National Acteens Panelists from Texas who shared how God was using them as they began their adventure as a national Acteens panelist.

WMU expanded its reach into churches as we saw an increase in new start requests indicating a renewed interest in local church missions discipleship.

WMU of Texas also experienced our very first virtual Regional Training event.

This event allowed attendees to gather “virtually” and also provided the foundation for a brand new library of online training resources.

We are grateful we were able to continue the work of WMU of Texas through technology. I want to thank the staff and the board of WMU of Texas for going above and beyond this year. The obstacles we encountered could have halted the work, but God had other plans. He used the gifts, abilities, and creativity of everyone to continue His work in 2020. We are looking forward to what God has in store for WMU of Texas in 2021!

REBECCA (BECKY) ELLISON 1961-2020 Servant Leader

God is always in control and “God’s Got This.”

Announcing . . .

The Becky Ellison CWJC/CMJC Endowment Rebecca “Becky” Ellison was a servant leader who lived her faith. As a beloved member of the WMU of Texas family, Becky served as the Christian Women’s & Men’s Job Corps (CWJC/CMJC) Consultant for the state of Texas, beginning as a contractor in 2009 and continuing to serve until her death in 2020. Her pure heart and active faith led her to train, mentor, coach, and walk alongside many women and men who sought to improve their lives and the lives of others through the CWJC/CMJC ministry. Even through several seasons of illness, her faith in God remained on display in the way she continued to serve and care for others. She often encouraged others by reminding them that no matter the situation, God is always in control and that “God’s Got This.”

Becky believed strongly in encouraging the leaders and the participants of the Christian Women’s and Men’s Job Corps sites across Texas. She believed in opening doors of opportunity for them to grow in knowledge and experience. One way she was able to facilitate this growth was through the Texas Christian Women’s/Men’s Job Corps Endowment. In 2001, to celebrate the fifth birthday of Christian Women’s Job Corps®, Texas site coordinators took an offering to create this endowment. In 2004, when the first Christian Men’s Job Corps site opened in San Angelo, the name was changed to include CMJC. The endowment has two purposes: to provide scholarships for CWJC/CMJC participants to further their education, and to provide funds for CWJC/CMJC leadership who need continuing education in areas related to the mission of CWJC/CMJC. SM

As we were determined to honor Becky’s legacy, the WMU of Texas board of directors voted unanimously during the October 2020 board meeting to rename the Texas Christian Women’s/Men’s Job Corps Endowment as the Becky Ellison CWJC/CMJC Endowment. The WMU of Texas family will always remember Becky Ellison and her legacy of love and service.

Serving hot meals to refugees

Food bag provided by Pastor Ramirez’s church

Sharing Christ on the Border Cutberto Ramirez from Nuevo Laredo began a ministry in the fall of 2020, training five permanent volunteers from five different churches. In addition to the funds received from the Mary Hill Davis Offering for Texas Missions®, these five churches also provided food from their own homes to help feed the refugees at the local community centers. They shared the gospel at every opportunity. As a result, currently 228 people have accepted Christ as their Savior.

River Ministry missionary Cutberto Ramirez shares the story of Keilin from Honduras. She met Christ during a difficult time. She and her six-year-old daughter lived in danger and suffered many humiliations. They were taken from their home by an official who left them on the street. Although Keilin asked for support, she received none. She contacted Pastor Ramirez’s church where she and her daughter were welcomed.

The church was able to provide a house for them, as well as employment for Keilin. She and her daughter now attend church. They receive food bags to meet their physical needs, and spiritual support to meet their spiritual needs.

Pastors Receive Study Bibles Convención Regional Bautista Norte de Chihuahua reported that at least 80% of the pastors in the convention obtained a Study Bible for the first time. It was like receiving a Christmas gift for all of them.

They recognize this blessing was possible because of the love of WMU of Texas for Mexico’s people. Jesus Galarza, a River Ministry missionary in El Paso, led the logistics to distribute the Bibles to Ciudad, Juarez, Monterrey, Nuevo Laredo, Reynosa, Matamoros, Guanajuato, Aguascalientes, Del Rio, TX, and the Valley.

Preparing to distribute food to families

A Small Church Meeting Giant Needs Iglesias Bautista Calvario in Weslaco is a small congregation of approximately 40 members. They combine their resources and partner with the local food bank to help minister to the least among them, primarily the low-income population of their community. Before the current global pandemic, the church provided food boxes to 80-90 families each month. Now, this small membership church offers boxes of food for over 200 families per month. The pandemic has magnified the food insecurity concerns in this ministry context. On occasion, there were so many people coming for food that the line of cars caused traffic congestion. A police officer saw the congestion and voluntarily directed traffic so that no family went without food, and everyone stayed safe. To meet the growing demand, the church needed a refrigerator and freezer to store the donated products until the distribution date. If they did not have these appliances, the donations would go elsewhere. A grant provided through the Mary Hill Davis Offering for Texas Missions helped Iglesias Bautista Calvario purchase the freezer and secure additional goods from the food bank.

Providing Water for Life

In February 2020, the Texas Baptist Men Water Ministry traveled to northern Ghana with a team of eight, including six drillers and two hygiene trainers to partner with Apostle Moses Sansa who is a pastor, evangelist, and church planter. The village of Batamateng had always been without a local water source, and the villagers were walking a long distance to the river to draw water shared with animals, and people bathing and washing clothes. The unclean water made many sick, but the village had no other options. With each well drilled, water borne diseases have drastically reduced due to the villages availability of clean water. The women and children no longer have the hardship of walking one to five miles a day carrying water.

Water from the wells has provided pastor Moses an opportunity to share the Living Water as well. Pastor Moses dedicates each new well, giving a strong dedication sermon and ceremony for the entire village.

People practicing Islam, ancestry worship, and regional cults, all come. They hear the Word of God, and many have come to know and follow Christ as a result. Pastor Moses has planted churches in all the villages where wells were drilled. He shares, “Hundreds of people are coming to Christ as a result of this project. The wells serve as a bridge to reach out to these people with the gospel. It is more and more easy to evangelize and plant churches for them. Doors have opened in communities where in the past we were not welcomed.”

Women’s Build 10th Anniversary – According to God’s Plan

During 2020, WMU of Texas had to operate differently in most areas, and yet, one thing remained the same…God was in control. For the 10th anniversary of the South Texas Women’s Build, God allowed the Santiago family (Adan, Anjali, and Anya) the blessed opportunity to build their own home. We were grateful to learn that several families, who previously partnered with us in building their homes, paid the blessing

forward by helping the Santiago family complete their home.

We are reminded in Hebrews 3:4 “for every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.” God knew the plan for the Santiago home from the beginning and He prepared the family for this opportunity. In fact, they participated in the build last year and knew what would be required to complete their home…according to God’s plan.

Due to the pandemic, and in agreement with our partner, Buckner International, the decision was made that a build team would not participate in-person for the build in 2020. While teams of women were not able to travel to the Peñitas area for the annual build, many were able to meet the Santiago family virtually on November 24, 2020 and pray with them as they began building their home. In a virtual closing ceremony on January 21, 2021, many former volunteers joined in the chorus of encouragement and prayers for this beautiful family as we presented them with a bilingual bible and the keys to their new home.

Over the last 10 years, many of you have given your time, construction skills, and financial support to this ministry outreach along the Texas border with Mexico. Thank you for volunteering in the past but also for giving to the Mary Hill Davis Offering for Texas Missions. It is through this offering that God provides the funds to purchase the materials necessary for each new home. God continues to call us to share the gospel in this community through assisting families with home ownership. We are already looking forward to the 2021 South Texas Women’s Build…. according to God’s plan.

Sisters Who Care™ Ministry The word sister speaks of a supportive team of women bonded together by a common interest. Sisters Who Care™ is a national organization of Women on Mission in African American churches. These women have a desire and determination to reach the world for Christ.

African American churches have always been involved in missions. SWC’s strategy seeks to introduce these churches to WMU for the purpose of support and affirmation. SWC desires to walk alongside and support what the churches are already doing in missions. We are available to assist them in growing their missions ministry by engaging them in discipleship and mission service.

In 2020, SWC was invited to serve with Texas Baptists African American Ministries at the African American Leadership Workshop on March 6-7, 2020 on the campus of Baylor University in Waco, Texas. SWC facilitated a workshop highlighting ministry opportunities.

SWC was able to connect virtually through the WMU Regional Training event held in September. These regional training workshops explored Sisters Who Care, and shared resources available through WMU of Texas and National WMU as well as sessions providing biblical principles for effective leadership.

2020 also saw the birth of collaboration established with other state SWC ministries. SWC leaders and individuals from Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Louisiana, Birmingham, Texas, and Tennessee began meeting each week for devotion and prayer. The collaboration was spearheaded by Chattanooga SWC and will move forward in 2021 with national WMU support to develop exciting ways to engage sisters in missions discipleship.

Missions Discipleship for All Ages Being on mission with God is always exciting and 2020 proved no different. While we had made plans, God’s purpose prevailed, and He empowered and equipped missions discipleship across the state to explore and experience new and exciting ways to minister to preschoolers, children, students and young adults.

Mission Friends found new ways to connect. From parades led by leaders to their mission friends’ homes, delivering treat bags and activities, to online story time, to mission friends song tag challenge, preschoolers and their families continued to grow as missions disciples.

Girls in Action® and Children in Action® were able to find ways to connect online, share Bible study and missionary stories as well as plan community ministry. Some groups were challenged to write and decorate cards to be delivered to a local nursing home. Others left treat bags containing pre-packaged snacks, notes and even simple activities on the porches of neighbors who had children. One GA community group even celebrated their end-of-year awards via Google Meet!

Mission Mondays was an opportunity for children from across Texas to connect virtually for a short mission lesson each Monday at 10am on the WMU of Texas Facebook page. Children across the state could take a short break from schoolwork and enjoy a missions lesson and fun missions activity.

Acteens® gathered via Zoom and, using Google maps, conducted a prayer walk to pray for different areas of the community, country and world. Some groups sewed masks and delivered them to essential businesses for the employees.

Children’s mission camp directors proved unstoppable. The creative, courageous, and committed camp directors from across Texas provided seven camps that met in person with adjusted schedules, one online camping experience, and another moved their camp to an overnight missions experience held at a local church. The results? God was still at work across the state at children’s missions camp. Salvations. Calls to ministry. Lives rededicated.

EMBRACE mentoring experience for young adult women was launched. The group moved to an online format in March and continued to meet. The pilot program actually provided the opportunity to explore a variety of ways churches can engage young women who are seeking God’s guidance in their ministry calling. Whether in-person, or online, young women can learn from their mentors and peers alike as they explore God’s purpose and plan for their unique ministry calling.

We are grateful for God’s faithfulness to lead us, providing new and creative ways to connect in continuing His call to make disciples who make disciples.

Social Media & Marketing Ministry During 2020, WMU of Texas expanded its digital footprint to provide WMU leaders a number of ways to connect with the state office online. ● Developed a ‘Missions Monday’ video series with Age-level Strategist Teri Ussery containing 13 episodes for children, parents & missions leaders. Watch the series at vimeo.com/showcase/ missionsmondays. ● Developed monthly video devotionals with Executive Director-Treasurer Tamiko Jones and weekly written devotionals with WMU of Texas President Earl Ann Bumpus to encourage and inspire the WMU of Texas community. Visit wmutx.org/blog to see past devotionals. ● Hosted a virtual Board Meeting & Regional Training event in October for missions-discipleship leaders containing 22 training videos. All training videos are available on-demand in the online Regional Training library at vimeo.com/showcase/wmutxtraining. ● Developed a Facebook community group to connect with and engage our WMU of Texas leaders around the state. In the last ten months, this group has grown to over 475 members. Join by visiting facebook.com/groups/wmuoftexas. ● Developed a brand-new Mary Hill Davis Offering website, iamtexasmissions.org, to educate and encourage individuals and churches to promote, pray for, and give to Texas missions. Through the new website, the Mary Hill Davis Offering for Texas Missions® has received over 16,000 views in countries around the world. ● Began the process of re-building the WMU of Texas website, wmutx.org, to share the ministry’s mission and vision to a wider audience in a clear and concise manner.

On Saturday, October 3, 2020, WMU of Texas hosted its first virtual Regional Training with over 178 WMU leaders from across the nation. In addition to the general sessions, participants were encouraged to choose from the 22 virtual training workshops led by experienced missions leaders in their fields of ministry.
