2019 WMU OF TEXAS ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Friends, Over the last year, WMU of Texas walked alongside churches and individuals in order to help them engage in local missions, we established partnerships for missions and empowered others for worldwide missions. We served with many of you as you engaged all age levels of your congregations and communities in missions discipleship and as you provided a home for a special family during the annual South Texas Women’s Build. Our partnerships with seminaries and collegiate ministries enabled us to continue to hear from young adults regarding engaging and equipping the next generation for domestic and worldwide missions.

While the harvest field in Texas is great, we were also challenged to invest in communities of women abroad through the

development of a leadership training plan to prepare them for indigenous discipleship.

The Mary Hill Davis Offering® for Texas Missions experienced a year of growth, including the amount you gave to support missions to an increased donor base. Through your generous gifts, ministries were able to support 77 mission opportunities across Texas. You empowered associations and compañerismos to provide training for pastors and lay leaders, Bounce Student Disaster Recovery groups to aide in the rehab efforts for communities impacted by devastating storms and natural disasters, and Go Now Missions to continue to mobilize Texas university students as missionaries in the US and abroad.

Thank you for your partnership in missions in 2019! We are celebrating all that God has done and is doing through you in our great state of Texas.

As we look forward, this year will include regional training opportunities for church and community WMU groups, the anticipated launch of Thrive 2:7 (the teen expression of CWJC), the formed partnership with the Baptists conventions of Tanzania and Uganda to offer training and development for women, and a renewed focus on young adult women through the launch of the Embrace mentoring model.

When I think of our ongoing mission of making disciples who make disciples, I am reminded of a quote from Eula Mae Henderson, former Executive Secretary of Texas WMU: “To act as missionaries, to speak as missionaries, to think as missionaries — these are hopes and dreams for members of Woman’s Missionary Union.

To unite as “laborers together” under the constant leadership of the Holy Spirit, to be personally aware of real needs, to take the minutes as they come from God during [1967] as moments of adventure for Christ-centered living — these are goals for members of Woman’s Missionary Union.

To magnify the church but to give the greater praise to the Lord, to advance the cause of missions but to give the glory to the Master, to do His work but to love Him more than His work — these are also goals for members of Woman’s Missionary Union of Texas.” ( BAPT I ST STANDARD, JANUARY, 1967)

Today, we have the same goals and are looking forward to a year of impact for the Kingdom of God across Texas.

In October of 2019, two teams assembled to provide a home for a special family in the PeĂąitas area of South Texas. Through our partnership with Buckner International, the family was selected through a screening and development process meant to equip the family for their future in the new home. Through the generous donations of the Mary Hill Davis Offering for Texas MissionsÂŽ, WMU of Texas can fund the needed building materials and equipment so that the selected families can have a new start.

The build would not have been possible without the willing hearts and hands of women volunteers from across the state. While ENGAGE

some build experience is helpful, all skill levels are appreciated. Women participated in the construction process by framing, insulating, applying sheetrock, painting and other things often taught by onsite trainers. However, another group of women gave of their time to prepare daily meals for those working at the build site. Some ensured there was a clean and safe work area, while others provided bilingual backyard Bible study for the community. For the last nine years, God has assembled the necessary teams to rise to the challenge. We look forward to a special time of reunion for the 10th anniversary in 2020.

All across Texas, the sun was shining on Children’s Missions Camp. From the plains of Big Country, to the trees of Mt. Lebanon; from the hills of Alto Frio to the trails of Riverbend, the sound of children enjoying camp filled the air.

Set Free was the 2019 camp theme, and children were experiencing the power of the Gospel in setting them free. Campers learned about the plight of refugees and were introduced to characters in the Bible who had been forced to find a new place to live. Campers learned about how we, as Christ-followers, can respond with compassion.

Texas hosted 17 children’s missions camps across the state. Here are observations following my camp visits.

A missionary from Kenya, sitting with GA’s all in native dress, sipping chai tea and learning how to say Jesus loves you in another language. Once a GA camper herself, this 20-something missionary 6

sat on the same conference floor and heard other missionary stories. The same floor where she shares with a new generation of young girls her stories of sharing the Gospel around the world.

Women committed to pour into new generations, loving them and encouraging them to become strong, committed followers of Christ.

I can’t wait for camping season 2020. More stories of transformed lives through spending time in God’s creation, learning about His call for a new generation of Christ-followers.

2019 ACTEENSAFTERGLOW Pursue 2019 brought together missions-minded, ministry-hearted Christ followers from across Texas. As the adults gathered to experience life as a refugee, attend a myriad of breakout sessions, and share worship in the General Sessions, teens gathered for a time all their own.

“He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted” breakout session equipped and encouraged teens to pray. A prayer board for requests, a journal to keep a record and personal testimony of prayer answered, gave them tools to become powerful prayer warriors in their school and community.

Over 50 girls and their leaders gathered following the general session on Friday night, for worship and to be challenged by the words of Isaiah 61:1.

They heard that “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me …”

Through worship and the Word, they learned that God has a calling, and pursues each of them for His purpose and plan.

“To proclaim freedom for the captives” breakout session allowed the teens to experience a small taste of life as a refugee. Through an ageappropriate refugee simulation, they were better equipped to understand and show compassion to those in need.

Saturday morning brought them together again for a time to understand what that calling entailed as students learned through handson experiences how to practically live-out the second half of Isaiah 61:1.

“To proclaim good news to the poor” breakout session provided students with tools and imparted boldness for them to share their faith.

“Release from darkness for the prisoners” breakout session provided the opportunity for teens to hear about Light in the Gap, a ministry to women leaving prison. They decorated bags, wrote cards and packed items that would be used by the ministry to change the lives of the most vulnerable.

CHRISTIAN WOMEN’S & MEN’S JOB CORPS A LEGACY OF CHANGE

Diana R. Garland School of Social Work Baylor University

Kaylee Henderson serves as the Diana R. Garland School of Social Work Advanced Placement intern with WMU of Texas for CWJC/CMJC. She received her bachelor’s degree in social work from University of North Carolina, Wilmington. Kaylee volunteered and completed her undergraduate internship with CASA for four years. She has also served in a leadership position with Pinecove Camps.

P31 Ministries Hamilton, Montana

Becky Ellison, WMU of Texas CWJC/CMJC Consultant was invited to visit P31 Ministries in Hamilton, Montana. She met with Carla Fox, Executive Director and the Board of Directors to provide more information about Christian Women’s Job Corps and board governance. P31 will serve as a 2019 WMU ANNUAL REPORT

transitional home for women exiting jail and prison. Christian Women’s Job Corps will be a part of the program to prepare women for life and employment.

Christian Women’s and Men’s Job Corps Endowment Scholarship

In 2004, Christian Women’s and Men’s Corps leadership created an endowment to provide scholarships for continuing education for CWJC/CMJC graduates and leaders. In 2019 a total of $4,425.00 was awarded to CWJC/CMJC graduates and leaders. The graduates are attending community colleges, universities, and trade schools in their local communities.

three CWJC graduates received scholarships. Ashley Mason received the Sybil Bently Dove award. She is currently working on her master’s degree in Psychology. Regina Glass received the Faye Dove award. She is working on her Associates Degree in Office Technology. Damaris Waihumbu received the Faye Dove scholarship. She is currently working on her degree in Physical Therapy.

Christian Job Corps of San Angelo received a Site Award.

We are still working to “Change the Story.”

The purpose of THRIVE 2:7 is to equip young people for a successful, Godly life after high school.

THRIVE 2:7 invests in young people’s lives through wholistic Christ-centered education and mentoring programs, empowering them to impact their families and communities.

In 2019, WMU of Texas received a grant from Texas Baptist Missions Foundation in the amount of $9,200.00 for curriculum development. Over the past year, writers from Baylor University and surrounding communities in Texas and Hawaii have worked hard to write lessons in the areas of; Healthy Relationships, My Life Online, Life Happens, Job Readiness, and Money Management. There is more behind the scenes work being done to create leader training, resources, and much more for persons interested in starting a THRIVE 2:7 ministry in their community.

You never know how boxes and boxes of flannel in your warehouse will be used. WMU of Texas donated flannel to a project group called Sewing Hope, through First Baptist Church, Tyler.

Making sanitary pads, 15-20 women meet together for the Sewing Hope project, partnering with their national partner, Rebika, in Nepal. Their goal is to make 20,000 pads. Mindy Watson, project coordinator, shares that God has enabled Rebika to get into remote

villages in Nepal to share “health� lessons and to share the Gospel and Bible stories of creation and the bleeding woman.

Rebika shared on the one-year anniversary in October that there are 50 new believers and two church starts in Nepal.

Praise God for flannel and willing hands and hearts to make sanitary pads.
