of GOD’s light.

A WORD FROM Tamiko

This year, as I reflect upon our charge to reach Texas (and beyond) for Jesus Christ, I am reminded of the words in Matthew 5:13-16 (ESV): “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

As believers, we are called to be the salt of the earth, offering love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control in situations when the atmosphere is ripe for discord. When we serve others in a selfless manner, we open the door to new relationships and desired peace. By acknowledging God as our strength and direction in any missions effort, we are letting our light shine. Can you see the bright moments during the pilot of the Thrive 2:7 program? Can you imagine the illuminated impact of the Women’s Build in Peñitas, Texas? Can you envision the beaming smile of a Mission Friends preschooler as they became more aware of missions and their involvement?

The mission of WMU of Texas is making disciples of Jesus Christ who are courageously obedient to live on mission. It is our prayer that in everything we do, we are obedient to the call of God in sharing the love of Christ in our state. We desire to walk with our churches and interested individuals as they seek to meet needs and reach the lost in their communities. For every call of God and obedient response, I hope you see the essence of the matter ... that the lasting impact of lives on mission is a world reached for Christ. In this, God gets all the glory.

In His Name, Tamiko C. Jones

WMU OF TEXAS STAFF TRANSITIONS

ELIZABETH (LIZ) A. ENCINIA

Liz, former Missional Lifestyle Strategist of WMU of Texas, was unanimously elected executive director-treasurer of Kentucky Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) by the Kentucky WMU Executive Board during a special called meeting in Louisville on August 18.

Since 2008, Liz served with WMU of Texas as the age-level consultant. She officially began her work with Kentucky WMU in October 2018. While the staff of WMU of Texas will miss seeing Liz in the office on a daily basis, they are overjoyed for this wonderful announcement. Kentucky has received one of our gifted and loved family members.

Join us in congratulating Liz and Kentucky WMU!

On January 1, 2019, Carolyn Porterfield officially began her retirement. First joining WMU of Texas in 1992, Carolyn’s journey in missions and ministry also includes prior service with Arkansas Baptist Convention and national WMU. Serving with a missions heart, Carolyn’s deep devotion to God, her joy in discipling others, and her steadfast love of promoting missions education through WMU were a few of the reasons WMU of Texas honored her with a brick on the Walk of Faith at national WMU in Birmingham, Alabama.

On December 6, 2018, the staff of WMU of Texas also hosted a retirement celebration for Carolyn. Attended by friends and co-workers from across the years, the event was a time to celebrate the wonderful legacy of faithfulness and service of Carolyn Porterfield.

We know that even in retirement, God has amazing plans for Carolyn!

TEXAS WOMEN ANSWER THE CALL TO HELP

REMODEL NATIONAL WMU HEADQUARTERS

Working with our hands is something that Texas women do well. Whether it’s making a meal, writing a letter, painting a fence, playing a piano, powerwashing a sidewalk, nailing sheetrock, or planting a garden, we are always willing to be used by God.

WMU of Texas answered the call for help from national WMU when they needed assistance with improving the look of their offices. We all believe that everything is bigger and better in Texas, so we not only brought our helping hands, but we also pulled the Women’s Build tool trailer over 600 miles to 100 Missionary Ridge in Birmingham, Alabama. We proudly parked her right in front to show the national WMU staff that we cared about their work space, and we were there make it better for them.

“Texas was in the house!” And we were ready to work! We stripped wallpaper and sanded walls. We cut wood and painted trim. Whatever needed to be done, we were willing to make it happen. Some of our more skilled hands used old lumber to create wall décor in the dock area. It wasn’t on the list, but hey, we’re Texas women!

Our motto was “If you have time to lean, you have time to clean,” so some of our group power-washed the outside of the building and the walkways after all our assignments had been completed on the interior. The WMU staff members were so thankful for our spirit and hard-working efforts. Excitement was in the air, and now the updates look amazing.

Great job, WMU of Texas! Your bright star was shining all the way to Alabama!

MK RE-ENTRY RETREAT

The WMU of Texas staff had the joy of ministering to Missionary Kids (MKs) at Highland Lakes Baptist Encampment, August 7-10, 2018. Children of international missionaries who were entering college in the United States for the first time had the opportunity to participate in this incredible retreat. The annual retreat is sponsored by the International Mission Board (IMB) and hosted on a rotating basis by state Woman’s Missionary Unions (WMUs). Because of your generosity through contributions, homemade cookies for their breaks, notes of encouragement, and prayers, the MKs experienced this all-expense-paid retreat for a time together with small group discussions, team-building activities, laughter, renewing friendships, and making new friends. Here are a few of their heartfelt expressions of gratitude:

MK RE-ENTRY RE-ENTRY

■ Thank you for how much you poured into us these few days. We really appreciate all you have done.

Hannah

■ Re-Entry was the highlight of my summer!

Zoe

■ Thank you for blessing all of us these past few days. We really appreciate all your time and effort.

Alex

■ I would not have been able to come if you guys hadn’t helped put it together and funded our trips. It has been the biggest blessing. Thank you for showing us God’s love. God bless you.

Genesis

■ Thank you for your constant prayer and support. It’s your incredible faith in God and support of ministry that makes these retreats such a grand success.

FROM RECEIVING TO GIVING BACK: EMPOWERMENT

Regina Glass graduated from CWJC Rusk County in 2017. After graduating from the program, she enrolled in Northeast Texas Community College to begin working on her Associate in Applied Science in Office Technology. Now, Regina works with Hope Ministries, a transition home for women and children. In June 2018, she completed National Certification Level One training for Christian Women’s and Men’s Job Corps. Regina shared, “I know that God has a plan for me to start a CWJC — in His perfect timing.”

MAKING CONNECTIONS IN WACO

Emily Morrow Loachamin is a dual degree student in Waco who has a passion for people. She received her Master of Divinity from Truett Seminary and is now working on her Master of Social Work at the Diana R. Garland School of Social Work at Baylor University. She began serving as a social work intern for WMU of Texas, Christian Women’s and Men’s Job Corps in August, 2018. Emily and her husband, Israel, also serve as directors of La Puerta, a ministry that connects Hispanic families to services in the Waco community.

GROWING OUR STATE LEADERS

In August 2018, Christian Women’s and Men’s Job Corps leadership attended the National CWJC/CMJC Leadership Retreat in Birmingham, Alabama. WMU of Texas provided a scholarship for 14 CWJC/CMJC leaders to attend the retreat.

LEADING CONFERENCES

PIEDRA NEGRAS, MEXICO

Fuente de Vida Iglesia Bautista in Piedra Negras hosted their annual conference, Congresso de Mujeres- Inquebrantable. Becky Ellison, CWJC/CMJC Consultant for WMU of Texas, and Emily Morrow Loachamin, Baylor social work intern, traveled to Piedra Negras to facilitate breakout sessions on discipleship and biblical counseling. Libo Kreig, WMU member from Katy, Texas, served as the keynote speaker.

FROM DALLAS TO DETROIT

Becky Ellison traveled to Detroit, Michigan, in April to participate in a women’s conference at Temple of Faith Baptist Church. Odelle Caldwell is the CWJC/WMU Director at the church. Becky introduced the group to the incredible work that is possible through a CWJC organization. Pray that a new CWJC will get off the ground soon in Detroit!

CHRISTIAN WOMEN’S AND MEN’S JOB CORPS ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP

In 2004, Christian Women’s and Men’s Job Corps leadership created an endowment to provide scholarships for continuing education for CWJC/CMJC graduates and leaders. A total of $4000 was awarded to CWJC/ CMJC graduates in 2018. These graduates are our 2018 recipients and are attending community colleges, universities, and trade schools in their local communities.

CHANGE THE STORY — THRIVE 2:7

While planning the 20th Anniversary for Christian Women’s Job Corps in 2017, we asked the question: How can we expand the reach of CWJC? God showed us that we can “change the story” by using the Christian Women’s and Men’s Job Corps empowerment model with high school students. We are grateful to the Texas Baptist Mission Foundation for providing a grant for pilot programs where students attend life and job skills classes in the areas of Healthy Relationships, My Life Online, Life Happens, Money Management, and Job Readiness. Anchors (volunteers) also served as mentors. In 2018, WMU of Texas partnered with CWJCs in Cleburne, Nacogdoches, and Boerne, as well as Kimball High School, and Buckner Family Hope Center at Bachman Lake, both in Dallas, to complete seven pilot programs around the state. Graciously, the Texas Baptist Mission Foundation provided a second grant to assist with the cost of writing curriculum for the Thrive 2:7 program.

MINISTRY AND MISSIONS IN MOTION

MISSIONARY KRYSTAL NORMAN

Last year, Suzette Mitchell was blessed with the opportunity to partner with African American Ministries at the African American Leadership Workshop at Truett Seminary and lead Sisters Who Care breakout sessions with women from Texas Baptist churches. Ladies were encouraged to engage, connect, and grow in ministry and missions. They discovered and discussed practical tools, personal stories, and people to connect with empowering each other to live life fully and make a greater impact.

They were challenged to first identify personal passions. Once identified, an individual can serve toward fulfillment by living an abundant life. First Peter 4:10 states, “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.”

We opened dialogue, and women shared their spiritual gifts, passions, strengths, and natural abilities. Women were able to freely verbalize their God-given strength and creativity. God used these moments to empower them to continue to press toward the mark of His high calling. From the guided activity, they were then challenged to use the passions discovered to engage in praying, learning, supporting, and going, both now and in the near future.

The weekend was powerful, encouraging, timely, and necessary to mobilize God’s people for His kingdom. The rooms were filled to capacity, general sessions were packed, but most importantly, hearts were filled with joy. May we continue to minister in the overflow of God’s love and power through passion.

WOMEN’S BUILD: EIGHT WAS GREAT!

The Assignment: Assemble two teams of women to build a three-bedroom house in 10 days in the Rio Grande Valley.

The Details: Recruit women, process applications, arrange travel, provide meals, purchase supplies, plan trailer logistics, make hotel reservations, plan local transportation to and from the job site, write devotionals, assign construction tasks, ensure safety, arrange equipment and professionals, keep teams dry, cool, and healthy. It certainly seems overwhelming when we begin to list these details, but God is willing to make all things possible if we trust Him. He walks before us and provides for all our needs, often before we even realize the need is going to exist.

Each year after we finish day 10 of our build, we walk away thinking, “How did that just happen?” How did mainly unskilled hands measure, cut, lift, nail, pull, score, tape, paint, and create a beautiful home for a family who desperately needs shelter? How?

Prayers to God Almighty were heard and answered, that’s how. We asked that He help us, and He did. We asked for safety and no one was injured. We asked for good weather so we could accomplish much and God provided ideal temperatures

and held off the rain so work could be done. We asked for good health and He shielded our group from sickness.

Besides our prayers for our own crew, we also asked that the family would be blessed and that God would be the center of their home. Angel and Aremi Luna Molina promised to stay committed to Him. Aremi cried when the teams gathered around her and laid hands on her. Through a Unión Femenil Misionera translator, we expressed our thanks to God for lives changed, for both our lives and the family’s lives.

The Outcome: Through the grace of God and His empowerment, there is another home built in Peñitas that will be a light of hope in a community of people who need to see the love of Christ. Through willing hearts and hands, another Women’s Build success story has been written.

THE NEXT GOAL: COME JOIN US FOR WOMEN’S BUILD #9 IN 2019!

WORLDCRAFTSSM...ANYWHERE?

WorldCraftsSM markets are setup all over the state of Texas each year. WorldCrafts is a huge part of our annual meeting. During the 2017 Annual Meeting and Mission Celebration held in Midland, Pam Poole was asked, “You stated from the podium that you would go anywhere to set up a market. Are you sure you will go ANY where?” Without hesitation, the answer was yes! Patsy Reid took that word and began to plan. When she returned to her home in Imperial, Texas, she contacted the office and verified that anywhere was still the answer. Although 2017 did not work for her schedule, we added her to the 2018 schedule and a sweet friendship was established.

Imperial is located in far west Texas. A very, very long way from Dallas. The stars are brilliant. The sunsets are incredible. And the people are some of the sweetest people you will ever meet. Was it the biggest market for the year? No, not at all. But like we say, it’s not about selling products. It’s about relationships. Through this friendship, Patsy decided that she wanted to be a part of the Women’s Build. She brought a friend. Lives are changed when the answer is yes, I will go.

What is God asking you to say? “Yes Lord, I will go ANY where You lead!” We promise you, it will be life changing. Say YES today.

VISION

We believe in the restoration of brokenness through hope in Christ.

PURPOSE

We make disciples who make disciples.

We passionately tell HIS story. We creatively empower leaders. We obediently engage the world.

PURSUE 2018 — GEORGETOWN

On April 13-14, 2018, women from across the state of Texas gathered at First Baptist Church of Georgetown, Texas, for the Annual Meeting and Missions Celebration of WMU of Texas. The recurring theme of PURSUE, guided by Romans 14:19, was emphasized on both days of the celebration. On Friday during the evening general session, attendees heard from Linda Cooper, president of national WMU, and Dr. Michael Evans, Sr., current president of Texas Baptists and senior pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Mansfield. While Cooper suggested we must make the most of every opportunity God gives us to share Christ, Evans challenged participants to remember we have been called to serve together in

unity. Also, during the Friday meeting, the following state officers were elected: Shirley McDonald, president, Elida Salazar, vice president, and Susan Morgan, recording secretary.

Friday evening ended with Acteens Afterglow, the dedicated worship time for teen girls. During this gathering, the 2018 National Acteens Panelist from Austin, Allison Agthe, was given an opportunity to challenge her peers to live missional lives. The teens completed a missions project for the Texas Baptist Hunger Offering and collected diapers, cake mixes, and icing for a local pantry.

The focus of the Saturday general session was serving in global missions. To the delight of the audience, the Austin Karen Baptist Church Children’s Choir opened the morning session with several familiar hymns. Representing Texas Baptists’ Missionary Adoption Program (MAP), Jair Campos offered words of insight concerning sponsorship of indigenous missionaries. MAP partners churches in the US with churches in a host country to jointly sponsor a missionary. These missionaries focus on evangelism, discipleship, and church planting. Pastor Jalil Dawood of the Arabic Bible Church in Dallas and executive director of World Refugee Care shared his personal testimony as a refugee from Iraq, challenging the audience to be intentional about loving their neighbors.
