2013 IMPACT REPORT

WMU of Texas

WE

MUST IMBUE OUR

ORGANIZATION

with a new spirita spirit that dares and accomplishes, what is seemingly the unattainable.

- Mary Hill Davis, Dallas, 1921

A Life-Long Missions Heart

... In Memory of Polly Hooper

Our beloved friend and colleague, Polly Hooper, went home to be with the Lord after an unexpected and extremely brief battle with cancer. Her quiet demeanor belied the fact that she was a spiritual giant.

Polly was a retired missionary with the International Mission Board. She had a passion for the nations. After five years with WMU of Texas, Polly was set to retire again at the end of 2013.

She quietly went about her work processing requests for Lottie Moon, Annie Armstrong and Mary Hill Davis orders. Every prayer guide and missions giving envelope received at your church was because of her steadfast commitment to her post. She also assisted with Missionary Parents Fellowship, Baptist Nursing FellowshipSM, and Christian Men’s® and Women’s Job Corps®.

I grew up hearing Willie Nelson sing, “My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys.” Like any good Acteen, I changed the words to “My Heroes Have Always Been Missionaries.” Polly was not a missionary because she went to

Africa. Polly was a missionary because that was her heart. It had nothing to do with geography. It had everything to do with responding to God’s call to take light to the darkness. That was how she lived each day.

We celebrate her life and her ministry. We will miss her each time we eat pizza (her favorite), pray for the retired missionaries and countless other occasions. We were not ready. We did not have a chance to say goodbye. Yet we think our goodbye would have paled in comparison to Jesus’ hello. Well done, Polly. Enjoy your reward.

THE CHANGE BUS TRAVELS THE STATE

The idea was birthed in the heart of God. The gift came from Amigos Internacionales. Wonderful partners helped make it a reality. Now Texas Baptists can enjoy beautiful products from 60 artisan groups as The Change Bus, featuring WorldCraftssm products, travels across the state. In 2013, more than $20,000 in fair-trade sales helped support the work of impoverished people around the world.

THE PAD PROJECT ENGAGES WOMEN ACROSS CULTURES

Women in South Asia are learning about Jesus through the gift of reusable menstrual pads. The goal is to send 300 drawstring bags with ten pads and two pad holders per bag. By December 2013, over 2,000 pads and 200 bags were sent. Anglo, Hispanic, Hmong, and Vietnamese women all contributed to this project.

SUDS OF LOVE... TAKING DONATIONS!

SISTERS WHO CARE MINISTER IN EAST ST. LOUIS

Sisters Who Care (SWC) took a team to the Christian Activities Center in East St. Louis, Illinois. Staffers provide after school programs from yoga to homework help, devotionals to starting a business. “During the SWC trip I experienced that sharing a kind word, a smile, or a hug had a profound effect on the small faces. I realized I was doing a great work.” Lois Craver, SWC, True Believers Baptist Church, Dallas

The storm has come. Houses destroyed. Lives torn apart. Who will help? In 2013, WMU of Texas launched a campaign to collect quarters for the new Suds of Love Disaster Relief Laundry Unit. More than $6,000 was collected at the WMU Annual Meeting and beyond by groups like Vernon’s First Baptist Church Women on Mission. In 2014, we will purchase a trailer and equipment.

BLESS BOSTON... Prayerwalking to Claim the Next Generation

Prayer on college campuses and around a Muslim mosque. Loving women at a retreat. Fellowship at an intercultural event. Sharing a meal prepared by Nepalese women who are sisters in Christ. Cleaning the Luther Rice Lodge where mission volunteers stay. God used all to bless people in Worcester, Boston and Rhode Island.

REFUGEE MINISTRY SUMMIT ...

Loving the Nations

Almost 17% of refugees coming to the United States settle in Texas. WMU of Texas was a partner in the Refugee Ministry Summit to focus on equipping churches to either begin refugee ministries or strengthen existing ones. A highlight of the event was Dr. Darrell Whiteman’s presentation on understanding a refugee’s worldview.

BUILDING HOUSES FOR THE KINGDOM

Down a road devoid of many street signs, and yet to be tracked by Google maps stands a brand-new purple house at the end of the block. It is a dream fulfilled for a family and Texas Baptists. This house now belongs to the Lozado family. Better yet, the parents, Miguel and Julia, now belong to Christ. The third consecutive year to construct a house in Peñitas, WMU of Texas has partnered with Bucker International and the Rio Grande Valley Baptist Association to build a better way of life in this small colonia in South Texas.

MissionsFEST BRINGS THE LOVE OF CHRIST to the Rio Grande Valley

Groups from all over the country joined national WMU®, WMU of Texas, and the Rio Grande Valley Baptist Association for a life-changing weekend. Opportunities for ministry included construction, healthcare, evangelism and a neighborhood block party. God brought two block party attendees into the Kingdom!

HISPANIC WMU OF TEXAS SERVES THE STATE

Hispanic women in Texas are training, serving, and leading others to be engaged in fulfilling the Great Commission. San Antonio, Amarillo, Dallas, Houston, Mt. Pleasant, Lake Jackson, McKinney, Laredo, Pasadena, Corpus Christi, Plano, and Jourdanton hosted training events. Combating human trafficking, sewing reusable menstrual pads, feeding the hungry, and working with Christian Women’s Job Corps® are examples of serving.

EQUIPPING WOMEN THROUGH ETHNIC LEADERSHIP TRAINING

How do you grow a leader? Scholarship money was sent to the Arab Baptist Theological Seminary to help a woman get a seminary education. Eight women attended the Ethnic Leadership Summit in Birmingham in August. WMU of Texas continues to support the Latina Leadership Institute through Baptist University of the Américas.

VIETNAMESE WMU WORSHIPS, LEARNS AND SERVES

Over 80 women came together in September to worship, serve, and learn. Several gave testimony to the difference Christ has made in their lives. Over 800 reusable menstrual pads were completed for the Women Helping Women Pad Project. Churches took Suds of Love banks and have given to support this new ministry.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

IN CUBA

WMU of Texas provided funding to ship a container filled with Vacation Bible School supplies and breakfast bars to Cuba. Hundreds of churches and house churches were able to use the materials. The Lord continues to bless Cuban church growth. The church-planting method has become a model for many other countries in the Caribbean as well as Central and South America.

EMPOWERING LEADERS TO SERVE

Leadership development events and activities are conducted throughout the state each year. Events for Bivocational/ Smaller Church Ministers and Spouses helped encourage and equip these leaders in ministry. WIFI (Workshops, Ideas, Fellowship and Inspiration) equipped local and associational leadership. WIFI events were held in San Antonio and Plano. Training gives participants the skills and confidence to be effective missional leaders.

PERU ANNUAL MEETING CELEBRATES DEFINING MOMENTS

February 2013 was a defining moment in the life of Peru WMU. At a Baptist camp outside Lima, women gathered to celebrate 50 years of God’s faithfulness. Delegates from WMU of Texas as well as Venezuela WMU were on hand to lead conferences and offer encouragement.

2013 MARY HILL DAVIS OFFERING® EVERYONE CAN!

The message of the 2013 Week of Prayer for Texas Missions and the Mary Hill Davis Offering® was simple. Everyone Can! Each person can be used by God to impact our state for Christ. It does not matter how old you are or how young you are. Physical limitations, declining heath, family crisis, nor anything else need hinder you from God’s call on your life. Each of us comes into the world with certain gifts bestowed by our Father. We are to offer our time, talents and treasure to God for His work.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE ...

Minnesota/Wisconsin WMU

WMU of Texas has enjoyed a long partnership with Minnesota/Wisconsin WMU. We were blessed to provide grants for work with the Hmong WMU as well as funds to facilitate an Acteens® event and Thailand Missions Leadership Training. Jeanne Wedekind says, “Investing in the Hmong WMU is allowing them to enlist and develop leaders around the world to share the saving gospel of Jesus Christ. Thank you, WMU of Texas!”

HAPPY 125TH TO NATIONAL

A yearlong celebration of 125 years of missions through national WMU® kicked off in June at the 2013 WMU Missions Celebration and Annual Meeting. Nearly 600 gathered for the event in Houston, Texas. Missionaries shared ways God is working around the world and related how growing up as a member of Mission Friends®, GA®, RA®, and/or Acteens® helped pave the way to their missions involvement today. Praise dancers from Canaan Bhutanese Church blessed the audience.

CHILDREN EXPERIENCING MISSIONS at Day Camp

For the second year in a row, WMU of Texas coordinated the mission projects segment of the Southern Baptist Convention children’s day camp. Girls and boys from all over the United States learned about the Texas Baptist Men’s Water Ministry and the Texas Port Ministry and how these ministries share the hope of Christ.

BIRTHDAY PARTIES ABOUND!

Celebrating GA’s 100th Birthday

Birthday celebrations across the state marked the 100th birthday of GA’s. Groups from Sinton to San Antonio, Bryan to Dallas celebrated with tea parties, pajama parties and camp-themed parties. WorldCraftssm and the Women Helping Women Pad Project were ministries celebrated by past and present Girls’ Auxiliary, Girls in Action® and Acteens members.

The excitement builds as more groups of young men and women engage in missions discipleship and missions engagement through Missions Remix. Pray for the Remix groups in Ft. Worth and Gilmer as God continues to encourage their journey to share the Gospel of Christ as they share their own hearts for others.

THE STORY FOR ALL GENERATIONS

Sisters Who Care (SWC) gathered at The Exciting Singing Hills Baptist Church, were challenged to make a difference in lives today, and invest in lives for the future. Inspiring conferences, dynamic worship and powerful testimonies filled the weekend. Participants blessed the pediatric cancer patients at Medical City Hospital in Dallas, by sewing pillowcases to bring a touch of home to their hospital bed.

WATER FOR LIFE

Texas Baptist Men (TBM) is using a new drilling method to bring clean water to areas in need. In May, volunteers from WMU of Texas and TBM learned the new drilling method. “The tools are easy to use and adaptable. This is a new approach for providing water to villages in need.” Teri Ussery, Adult Missions and Ministry Consultant, WMU of Texas

Pornography has invaded our culture … and our churches. WMU of Texas has joined the fight by endorsing the One Million Men initiative through national WMU. Be a prayer partner by signing the wall and committing to pray for the men in your life to live pornography free.

www.join1millionmen.org

TELLING HIS STORY

The story of Jesus is personal, passionate and powerful, and it changes lives. When people choose to follow His story, it intersects their lives, allowing them to be part of something bigger than themselves. At the 2013 WMU of Texas Annual Meeting and Missions Celebration held at First Baptist Church in McKinney, woman after woman, missionary after missionary, shared about how God had taken His story and woven it into their story, allowing them to be part of offering hope and His redemption to those they encounter each day. The event challenged 700 participants to recognize God’s story within their story and share that with others around them, allowing the changing power of the gospel to flow from them.

Wheelchairs, walkers and crutches filled the Baptist Nursing Fellowship exhibit at the 2013 WMU Annual Meeting and Missions Celebration. The donations were gathered specifically for Cuban Baptists. Texas Baptist Men put the medical supplies in their shipping container bound for Havana. With our help, Cuban Baptists were empowered to share the love of Christ in practical ways.

SHARING CHRIST IN CUBA MEDICAL PROJECT

ENCOURAGING MISSIONARY PARENTS

Local Missionary Parents Fellowship groups met throughout the year to celebrate testimonies from stateside missionaries and encourage one another. The Texas Missionary Parents Fellowship conference in Georgetown included 60 parents. The National Missionary Parents Fellowship Retreat will be held in April, 2014, at the Inn of the Hills in Kerrville.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE at the MK ReEntry Retreat

“I would like to say 'thank you' for your kind gift. Your provision provided me the opportunity to connect with other MKs about to embark on the same journey that I am…going to college and living in America for the first time in my life! The retreat provided me with helps and counsel as I make the transition from an MK living in the Philippines to an MK living in America. It was an awesome experience.” – Charlie, Missionary Kid (MK)

SHARING DEFINING MOMENTS

Christian Women’s Job Corps (CWJC)/Christian Men’s Job Corps (CMJC) transforms lives:

Arlington graduate, Connie, and her son became homeless. A classmate shared her home to help them. Connie is now employed, receiving a promotion after three months due to skills she acquired through CWJC.

CWJC Gonzales serves meals to oil field chaplains.

Waco graduates sew pillowcases for dialysis and cancer patients.

CWJC Nacogdoches prayer walks their campus on the CWJC/CMJC Day of Prayer.

CWJC/CMJC Endowment awarded six scholarships.

CMJC Kerrville men participate in a Walk to Emmaus.

TEXAS WOMAN REBUILDS HER LIFE THROUGH CWJC

LaDonna Lecoq described her life as, “full of doubt and low in selfconfidence” before coming to CWJC of Granbury. “Being at CWJC was a wonderful experience where I was surrounded by Christians who were a living testimony of God’s grace and greatness,” Lecoq said. “I am so grateful for the staff for their love, support and believing in me.” Once a registered nurse, Lecoq let her license lapse when she found herself alone with a child to raise. Now that her daughter is grown, she plans to pursue courses in medical billing and coding at Weatherford College in order to realize her goal of re-entering the medical field. To help with her goals, Lecoq will receive $700 through the Faye Dove Scholarship Award. This is a new scholarship established by WMU this year and will be awarded annually to select CWJC graduates who have demonstrated perseverance in achieving personal goals and plan for continued education.

PARTNERING ABROAD

We desire to help our partners have a platform to share the Gospel of Christ. WMU of Texas provided certification training for WMU leaders from Mexico and Venezuela to establish Christian Women’s Job Corp ministries in their own countries. Pray for launch of these new sites.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE! A TRIBUTE TO NELDA GERBINE

Most valuable assets: Nelda’s understanding and knowledge of all age-levels of church and associational WMU, her willingness to serve in whatever capacity needed at the time, and her positive spirit. She gained a broad perspective of Texas Baptist life that served her and others well. And it was fun…most of the time! Thank you, Nelda!

Joy Fenner, former WMU of Texas Executive Director-Treasurer

Nelda was already working in the WMU office (511 Building) when I came on staff in 1983. Her desk was the closest to my office, so she fielded all my “rookie” questions and mistakes which she always handled with extraordinary patience. She was a mentor for me in all things WMU and the Baptist Building from the beginning, and she became a personal friend who continued to fill my life with her contagious joy and sense of fun!

Pat Luttrell, former Adult Missions Consultant

Nelda, when I count my blessings, I count you twice. Truly, your life is exemplary of a committed Christian, and you have enriched my life by your caring and loving heart. I will always hold you in high esteem for your many contributions to WMU of Texas. My love,

Merle Cross, vice president, WMU of Texas Executive Board

It was my privilege to work with Nelda during my early days of ministry at the BGCT. I always said that I worked for Nelda, and she always made me look good. She conspired with my lovely wife to make sure I got things done the way she felt they should be done and was an inspiration to everyone who came in contact with her. “Baby Rae” may be retired, but she will live on in the hearts of so many who served through Mission Service Corps and those who have had the joy of working with her through WMU.

Cecil Deadman, former Director of LifeCall Missions, retired Director of Bivocational/Smaller Church Ministry

I met Nelda Gerbine during the 1990’s. She was always fun, creative, focused, eager to encourage and helped those who needed a word and hand of encouragement. Nelda had some challenging years, but trusted the Lord to provide which He did. I was so pleased when she began working in the office of WMU of Texas. She was always eager to help and prompt with her response. It has been great to get to know her husband, Perry, and see the evidences of a strong man with a tender heart and a great spirit. They make a wonderful couple who serve others as they serve the Lord. I pray God’s blessings on them and their family.

Gloria Mills, President, WMU of Texas, 2010-2014

I often joked that Nelda carried the WMU of Texas history in her head. While that’s true, it would be even more accurate to say she carried our history in her heart. Nelda was passionate about her ministry. She poured out her service as a sweet sacrifice before the Father. While her ministry as a WMU leader goes on, we miss seeing Nelda on a daily basis. We wish her well in retirement!

Sandy Wisdom-Martin, Executive Director-Treasurer, WMU of Texas

SHAPING THE FUTURE OF MISSIONS THROUGH THE Eula Mae Henderson Memorial Scholarship

“I began to pray about what it was I was supposed to do with my life. I distinctly heard God answer ‘missionary.’ I was shocked and confused. I had never considered myself worthy of a call to Christian ministry, especially missions. Through much prayer and counsel, I surrendered to this call asking God to lead me one step at a time.”

Bethany Ann Parrott

Truett Theological Seminary and Baylor University of Social Work

“I joined an international church plant. This semester, I will be working with a small group that focuses on University of Texas at Arlington students. While we will target various ethnicities, I am prayerfully going to work specifically with Indians. My end goal is still to go back on the mission field.”

Anna Daub

Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary

“I feel called to serve people both spiritually and physically in an impoverished setting. Jesus healed people in both capacities in very real ways. I want to love and serve them in the same real way. My heart is for the hurting and broken and those who experience intense suffering.”

Brittany Allen Caldwell

Truett Theological Seminary

“I have felt a call to the nations as long as I can remember through Mission Friends, GAs and Acteens as well as my parents’ trips. By age 12, I committed to missions before my church. God reaffirmed this call while doing missions in college.”

Amy Nicholson Jones

Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary

“I grew up very interested in international mission work. When I was 12, I surrendered my life to international missions. Over the years, through trips, local ministry and being mentored by many retired missionaries, the Lord has continued to confirm this calling.”

Margaret Joanna Ledbetter

Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary

LEAVING A LEGACY

Three women left a legacy that will impact missions in Texas for years to come.

Mary Louise Riley of Dallas was born in Tahoka, Texas on January 11, 1939. Mary graduated from Brownfield High School in 1957. She later moved to Lubbock where she worked for Trinity Baptist Church and then moved to Dallas where she worked 42 years at the Baptist General Convention before her retirement. She was a charter member of Forest Meadow Baptist Church in Dallas. A gift from Mary’s estate was donated to the Mary Hill Davis Offering® for Texas Missions Endowment.

Bonney Lockett was born April 13, 1918. She grew up in Ridgeway and graduated from high school in Sulphur Springs, TX. She moved to Lockett in 1939 and began her career as a beautician until her retirement in 1983. She was an active member of the Lockett Baptist Church, where she worked for many years with children and served as the WMU Director for 15 years. She was District 11 GA Camp Director and was active in the Red Fork Baptist Association WMU. In addition to her church, Bonney and her husband worked with the Tipton Children’s Home, caring for numerous children over the years. Proceeds from the sale of her home after her death were donated to the WorldTouch Endowment.

Pauline Steele was an only child, born April 21, 1928. Pauline attended school at Williams, a community that no longer exists. She moved with her parents to Odessa in the late 1940’s, where she met Austin Steele. Pauline and Austin were married for 59 years before his death in 2008. Both made their careers working for Phillips Petroleum Company. Pauline (or less formally “Polly”) was a valued member of Second Baptist Church. A gift from Pauline’s estate was donated to the Mary Hill Davis Offering® for Texas Missions Endowment.

HOW CAN YOU LEAVE A LEGACY?

Not everyone recognizes the importance of having a will and keeping it updated. It not only ensures that your wishes will be carried out, but also gives you the chance to continue passing on your passion for missions even beyond your lifetime. As faithful stewards, we have a responsibility to use wisely the financial gifts God has entrusted to us. Part of this responsibility involves arranging how our resources will be used after our death and talking to our family about our decision. For more information about planned giving, contact Sandy Wisdom-Martin at 214-828-5150.
