fter years of hard work and the numerous challenges you faced this academic year as a high school student, I would like to congratulate you on accomplishing the goal of receiving your high school diploma. I can genuinely say that nothing excites me more than to think of the limitless possibilities available to you as you continue your journey in life. I want you to know I enjoyed being your director of schools and hope in some small way I have inspired you to work hard and persevere. I am quite certain hard work and integrity will take you places. I challenge you to continue to set goals and to become a successful citizen. To treat this accomplishment as a comma not a period in your life’s journey. The world is full of great opportunities; capitalize on those as you enter this new chapter in your life. Good luck and wherever life leads, you will always be a part of our Monroe County Schools family! Dr. DeAnna McClendon

2020 Vision for the future
The “Class of 2020” always had a special ring to it. And though all of our Monroe County graduating classes are special, little did any of us know just how special this year’s seniors would become. Most of the Class of 2020 graduates were born as the TOMMY MILLSAPS nation was still Special Contributor adjusting to life after the Sept. 11, 2001 Terror attacks. Many of us relied on pagers, not cell phones
to keep in contact. Tom Brady had just risen from a backup quarterback to Super Bowl champion. The Class of 2020 grew up watching “Hannah Montana,” “The Suite Life with Zack and Cody,” “Jimmy Neutron,” and of course, “Spongebob Squarepants.” Tom Brady and Spongebob are still around, however, there have been a few changes when it comes to phones. This year’s graduating seniors from Sequoyah High, Sweetwater High and Tellico Plains High are filled with dedicated athletes, cheerleaders, dancers and students who excel in all phases of the arts. They will no doubt go on to do great things in life.
The Class of 2020 was already set to leave its mark before one of the most unusual times in our nation’s modern history struck with the onset of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic in March. The pandemic was a sudden earth-shattering jolt for this year’s graduating class. School let out early the week before spring break. It was uncertain when students would return to class. Little did the seniors know at that point that their high school days were already over. However, it soon became apparent that the school year was over and the official word came down in the middle of April: the 20192020 school year was finished two
months early. The seniors would not get to walk the halls those last two months as the kings and queens of their domain. The ballfields fell silent as sports seasons were over. Proms and graduation ceremonies had to be put on hold. This year’s seniors were heartbroken by the news their school year was over early. But out of the sadness rose their optimism that has made us all so proud and which will serve them and their community well as they move out into the world. The community has rallied around this special class by holding parades and special events.

Class of 2020 marks 25 years for Sequoyah High School BY TOMMY MILLSAPS Special to Oldies 98.3 FM WMTY
Time flies and it might be difficult to believe Sequoyah High School is now a quarter of a century old. Having opened in 1995, Sequoyah High School over the years has successfully blended students from two distinct communities, Vonore and Madisonville. The students who would have once been Vonore High Blue Devils and Madisonville High Tornadoes are now proud Sequoyah GRACE WIGGINS Chiefs. Sequoyah High School The Class Graduating Senior of 2020 Chiefs made great achievements in academics, sports and the arts. Those achievements alone would have been enough to place this class proudly among the top classes of the school’s great history and tradition. However, the Coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent early end to the school year placed a unique burden on this year’s class. It is a burden Sequoyah High Principal Debra Tipton said this year’s seniors more than met. “The students at Sequoyah High School have been faced with a very difficult and unique situation brought on very quickly by the Coronavirus,” she said. “They have ended their senior year with no sports, no school, no real graduation, no prom, and no closure. They have worked so hard for 13 years to complete their high school education and missed out on so many opportunities that are a part of growing up and transitioning to adulthood with zero adjustment period. I know the students of Sequoyah High School will rise to the occasion
and accomplish what they set out to do. These Chiefs will persevere through these trying times and go on to succeed in the work force, the military, and in post-secondary opportunities! I can’t say enough of how proud I am of these seniors! I’m sure their unique perspective will produce a unique impact on the world. Congratulations to the Class of 2020!” Grace Wiggins is a graduating senior whose father teaches at the school. She exemplifies the way this year’s Monroe County’s seniors have faced such an unusual and trying year. “Sequoyah High School doesn’t seem like just high school,” she said. “It’s been part of my entire life because of my dad and his passion for students, agriculture, and sports! This odd ending to my senior year has been tough but I am coping because I know that I’ll play more volleyball in the fall at Cleveland State. I also know that as long as my dad is there, it’ll be part of our lives! A special thanks to him and all of my teachers/administrators/staff that have made sacrifices to give me a wonderful experience!” She cited a favorite Bible passage: “May the Lord bless you and keep you. May He make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May He lift up his countenance to you and give you peace (Numbers 6:24-26).

Students come first at Sweetwater High School BY TOMMY MILLSAPS Special to Oldies 98.3 FM WMTY
Sweetwater High School (SHS) has a storied history that every bit lives up to the image of the iconic main building that stands proudly in the center of the campus. Principal Eric Weaver has always taken great pride in teaching students about the school’s history and the many great students, principals and teachers who have walked the halls of SHS before them. Weaver’s administration is made up of educators who once walked ALYSSA HAMILTON those very Sweetwater High School same halls as a Graduating Senior student like him and their love of SHS shines brightly through the students. All graduating classes are special to all principals. However, the trials and tribulations this year’s seniors have gone through left an impression on Weaver as he has watched these seniors learn, grow and adapt to any and all challenges. “This class has shown great maturity from the very first day they stepped on campus as if they were preparing for this pandemic during their senior year,” Weaver said. “They have embraced every challenge put forth to them in academics, athletics and the fine arts! I am super proud of the class of 2020 and expect BIG accomplishments from them in their future. We base our foundation at SHS on making sure our students come first—I think this graduating class is aware of this and will persevere in getting through these tough times.” In normal times, the SHS 2020 Class would be remembered well enough for those great academic achievements and for history
made on the court and ballfields. But undeniably, this class is standing out as well for how it has handled losing what should have been a fun and exciting last two months of school. Imagine going to school for 13 years and looking forward to your senior year, especially the last couple of months, only to see that taken away through no fault of your own. Alyssa Hamilton is a graduating senior at Sweetwater High. Like the seniors at SHS and Monroe County’s other two high schools, her senior year came to that abrupt end but she still finds the silver lining. She has a favorite quote: “The thing about new beginnings is that they require something else to end.” She finds truth and comfort in that line from the character Blair Waldorf. “I feel like this is so true because this pandemic may seem horrible in the moment but I believe God is preparing us for the better that is coming soon,” Hamilton said. “I’ll miss everything about Sweetwater High School but better things are coming.” This group of Wildcats might have experienced a senior year like no other, but they wear the Blue and Gold as proud as any class.

Tellico Plains seniors have special resiliency BY TOMMY MILLSAPS Special to Oldies 98.3 FM WMTY
Tellico Plains High School (TPHS) moved into a new building a quarter of a century ago the same time Sequoyah High School moved into its new building. The school has an even longer history of bringing students from the Town of Tellico Plains and the communities of Rural Vale and Coker Creek all together in the ninth grade to form a proud bunch of maroon-clad Tellico High Bears. These students have ADDY FREEMAN formed a special Tellico Plains High School resiliency, some Graduating Senior of them having witnessed a tornado rip through their town in 2012 when they were only 10 years old. This resiliency has served the students well during the trying times of the Coronavirus pandemic that cut the school year short. “These young Bears and Lady Bears have faced a ‘giant’ at the end of their high school journey like none before them has faced,” Principal Russell Harris said. “Yet, the Class of 2020 is filled with doctors, teachers, accountants, future presidents, CEO’s, mayors, nurses, mothers, fathers, and loving, caring citizens. This class is 107 strong and has maintained the highest GPA for three years running, been one of the most athletic groups in many years, and will go out from Tellico Plains High School with intelligence, confidence and readiness.” Harris sends a direct message to the class. “Students, you are graduating from a school like no other, you are exceptional above all others, and you possess the unlimited potential to accomplish any goal
you aspire to dream,” he said. TPHS senior Addy Freeman will be able to draw on her experience at the school for the rest of her life. “The four years I attended high school definitely define who I am,” she said. “Each and every student and teacher has had an impact on my life and molded me into who I am today.” She admits this senior year was not what she expected. “Although it is hard, I have found comfort in words of friends and family around me,” Freeman said. Dana Wilson represents the TPHS Class of 2020 well. She was born two months early, had many health problems and her parents were told she would not live. “They believed that I was a gift from God and would not give up on me,” Wilson said. Wilson’s parents in recent years have suffered their own health problems, prompting the necessity for her to take care of them. However, she is graduating as a top student and will attend Tennessee Wesleyan University on a full scholarship. The Coronavirus pandemic is nothing she can’t handle with her faith in God. “The Class of 2020 will be stronger after this time,” she believes. “I am #2020 strong.”

You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself Any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.” ~ Dr. Seuss, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”
2020 Vision From page 2
Many people in the community “adopted” seniors through a special Facebook page. The community members who adopted them sent the seniors special gifts and cards to reward, honor and encourage them. Monroe County Mayor Mitch Ingram could not be more proud of how this graduating class has handled adversity.
“The graduating Class of 2020 has experienced a year like no other,” he said. “There is no doubt that these seniors have had an unprecedented experience that they will never forget. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers and students across the nation have had to adjust to distance learning, life without anticipated athletic seasons, significant events postponed, and more. Complete uncertainty has been a cloud over the conclusion of their
senior year, and yet, they have pushed forward and found ways to make such a challenging time full of memories that they will forever cherish.” He touched on the attitude of this year’s seniors. “We will always remember the class of 2020,” he said. “The current pandemic will not be the reason why these seniors will not be forgotten, but instead, how they have decided to respond to this crisis will continue to make
us proud of each of them. Experiential learning has taken place throughout Monroe County as these seniors have been learning through the reflection of doing. Many of those learning experiences have been in the form of helping others and responding to the needs that are present in our community during this time. It is because of this that we have faith that the Class of 2020 will continue to do great things in Monroe County for the years to come. “
