Kylan Carson carries the ball against East Hamilton last season. I believe Coach Vestal will be a coach that players will love to play for and will give 100 percent too. This coaching staff believes they are not just coaches, they are molders of men. Coach Vestal said that he believed that you must coach’em hard, correct them when their wrong and love’em in everything else. This year’s team will start just like last year with Tellico and then Polk County. The Chiefs need to win those first two games to help build confidence and momentum for the tough region ahead. Confidence, momentum, fundamentals, and the ability of this coaching staff to get this year’s players to buy in to their philosophy will be the key for this year’s Sequoyah Chiefs.

Landen Boyd’s team, and I think he knows that and he’s mature enough to know that means you can’t slack off..” Senior Wesley Bean will serve as the backup quarterback in addition to seeing time in both the offensive and defensive backfields and possibly some wide receiver as well. Boyd also played very impressively at the linebacker position late in the season last year. Although his time on defense looks to be minimized with him having control of the quarterback position, his coach does like his desire to play: “I don’t know a whole lot of quarterbacks that are asking to play linebacker, so I kinda like that, but you don’t want to throw him in there and get him beat up, so we’ll see how that goes.” The Wildcat running game will be centered around senior Malik Arnett. Last season, Arnett was very close to 1,000 yards rushing despite the fact he missed a couple of games. As for this year, Martin says, “I think he’s matured and developed in the weight room..” The big change involves a new fullback. Kai Correll is moving to that position. Last year, Correll was the starting center. According to Martin, “He’s going to be a surprise addition to the backfield.” The stable of relief in the backfield is very full. Among those that could get carries are Bean, Jayven Melton, Isaac Price, Brayden Westfield, and newcomer Zac Powers. When it comes to the aerial assault, Sweetwater will be looking to a couple of tall basketball players on the outside, Ryan Littleton and Chris Alford. They will be joined by quick slot receivers such as Dallas Presley, Braylon Ferguson, and Bean. The goal is for Boyd to develop the necessary confidence in his taller wideouts to throw it where they can use their hardwood skills to outjump the opponents and make a play. Of course, a football team’s success revolves primarily around the offensive line. With last year’s starting center moving into the backfield, that spot is likely going to be filled by Maddox Johnson. “Maddox took the job in the spring.” Martin said, “He did a great job and developed his body in the weight room as well as his mental attitude. He got mentally stronger, we saw that in the spring. He’s been very coachable. He’s our center right now. It’s up to him to keep it.” Another huge part of the offensive line will be a healthy Jovan Johnkins. According to Martin, Johnkins has been playing with a “bum shoulder” for the past two years. After having off-season surgery, he is now “healthy and looks as strong as ever.” The remainder of the line will be filled by a combination of Lucas Stamey, Jesus Guzman, Eli Brown, Ty Webster, Cristian Contreras, and Daven Cozart. Martin is confident with any combination of these young men on the field and says that several may actually play multiple spots on the offensive line in a single game. Defensively, the Wildcats aren’t looking to change things schematically from last year. The idea is to use big guys up front to occupy blockers so that the linebackers are free to run. The big guys on that defensive line will be the same as those doing the blocking on offense. With Martin’s willingness to start as many people as possible, that should open up opportunities for those that don’t make the starting offensive line. As for linebackers, the coach says, “We’ve got 5, 6, 7 linebackers that are pretty good, and that’s without Landen, and he’s not bad.” Some of those we can expect to be making

big tackles are Powers, Webster, Melton, Correll, Westfield, Price, Ben Coleman, and Silas Brown. According to their coach, these guys are going to be allowed to run and make plays. The secondary will be young when speaking in terms of experience, but Martin says they are full of talent. Bean, Alford, Presley, Ferguson, and Jeremiah Paris are among those that will be patrolling the defensive backfield. The Wildcats will primarily be using a cover 3 look in the secondary. Martin says that his defensive backs have looked pretty good in the summer passing league. Special teams will be led by a familiar face. Senior Jesus Guzman will be handling the majority of the kicking and punting duties. Brennan Teutimez, a new Wildcat relocated from California, also brings some kicking and punting experience that could be an asset to the team. — Mike Martin Correll and Eli Brown Head Coach will be handling the long snapping duties. Sweetwater faces a unique challenge with their schedule this year. They only have four home games, and only one before the middle of October. If they can withstand the role of road warrior early in the season, they may well be able to finish strong and prove that indeed it is “Their Time.”

The whole point of platooning is developing for the future and giving some kids a break...This year, we have more depth than we’ve ever had since I’ve been here and I think that’s a direct result of what we did last year.

“CHANGE THE CULTURE”

New Coach Elevates Excitement and Intensity live as good quality husbands and fathers.” After losing many of last season’s impact players to graduation, understandably “Change the culture” tends to be an there are questions about who will step overused cliche. supposed to be, and directs the huddle very well. He brings experience and big arm talent to the table. As he adds to his record as TPHS’ all-time leading passer we’re also excited to see what he does with his legs.” Already with a howitzer for a right arm, rumor has it Hollinghead has grown an inch and packed on 15 pounds of thickness in preparation for this season. Every quarterback’s dream, Hollinghead’s entourage will be a monster offensive line. Senior Cohen Miller looks to have a dominant final season for the Bears. He has the size and ability to control the line of scrimmage and take over a game in the trenches at any time. “Cohen brings a wealth of experience and a mean streak in his play that we love.” Others holding down the line will be Isaac Dalton, Riley Burnett, Evan Davis, and Malachi Roberts. “Isaac is a really smart kid with a big, powerful body. He’s one of the most technicallysound linemen that we have. He is a leader in how he attacks each and every day. Riley, we like to call Rambo. He’s a very intense and physical young man that likes to play through the whistle. Newcomer Evan Davis will be our big anchor at center. He’s about 6’3, 290, and is probably the strongest kid on the team. He’s gonna be a problem for opponents for sure. Malachi has worked really hard in the weight room this offseason and gotten into really good shape. He’s not the biggest guy in the world, but he’s got fight to him.” Other linemen hoping to contribute in big ways are Ezra Lance, Luke Harris, Logan Watson, and Jaden Driver. “Ezra and Luke are both strong kids that will absolutely provide some depth for us. Logan Watson, we call him Big Country. He’s the biggest kid on our team. He’s raw, but he competes and could be a starter before it’s all said and done. Jaden is just a freshman, but he’s had a really good summer, showing he can immediately play at the varsity level. He’s gonna do special things in his career as a Bear.” Coach White has a stable of running backs he’s confident can get the job done, headlined by Ryan Shaffer, Ethan Harris, and Damian Webb. “Ryan is one of the hardest workers on the field and in the weight room. No one will outwork Ryan. He’s really changed his body this offseason, and is a big, physical runner with good footwork and vision. He has definite leadership skills as a sophomore, and that’s a rare thing. Ethan played offensive line last year, but with his athletic ability and depth we have on the line we were able to move him to the backfield. He’s a 6’2, 230 bruiser that kids are not gonna want to tackle. Damian is one the fastest kids on the team. He’s a game-breaker that can be a home run threat anytime he touches the ball. He’s our versatile Swiss army knife that will also play receiver.” Other bruising backs looking to step up and help the team are Case Grant, Chance Shapiro, Will Sanders, and Nathaniel Bivens. One of the biggest questions that must be answered is who will step up at receiver after 121 of last season’s 137 receiving yards per game left with graduation. Along with Damian Webb, those who look poised for the challenge are Omar Miller, Cameron Coleman, Brady Cook, Eli Marcus, Josh Armour, Bradyn Enterline, Adam Holley, and Ike Hollinghead. “Besides being a very capable backup at QB, Omar Miller is possibly the best athlete on the team. We’ve got to find ways to get the ball in his hands. I believe special things will happen when we do. With his potential off the

charts, Omar could be electric. Coleman is a big target at 6’3 with great hands. He’ll go up and get about any ball you throw at him. With Brady Cook’s speed, athletic ability, and great route-running, fans are really gonna love watching him on Friday nights. Eli is a great athlete and former lineman that lost a ton of weight and has turned into an absolute weapon for us. We have a smart, dependable receiver in Armour, and a great route-runner in Enterline. Holley is another piece. He’s probably our most improved receiver. Ike is a freshman who has turned some heads and worked really hard. He had a lot of success in the 7-on-7 scene this summer, hauling in some big catches and getting into the end zone quite a bit. What he’s gonna bring not just this year, but also in the future could be pretty special. Others trying to impact the position are Jericho Moses, Elijah Helton, Angel Mejia, and Braden Reed. — Bobby White The weight room has Head Coach also paid off for Sony Duncan. Look for him as another Bear using his muscle and toughness to fire up Tellico fans this season. Other players trying to make a big difference for the maroon men are Jacob Davidson, Austin Hall, Nick Johnson, Jamarcus Melton, Dalton Thomas, Hayden Phillips, Jonathan Gourley, Caleb Self, Gabe Sherwood, Christian Jones, Eden Byers, and Jacob Armour.

I told the kids on day one, ‘I’m coming here to win.’ We’re going to have a winning culture here, and that starts with a positive culture. We’re going to build these kids up and get them to believe in themselves.
