as Assistant Athletic Director who would be charged with developing a football program. Bolinger was intrigued by the prospect of building a football program from the ground up. He cast his lot with Concord. After a year, Concord had a change of heart yet again. Bolinger was informed they had decided not to have a football team. It was then that Sequoyah High School had a vacancy in their head football coach position. With letters of recommendation in hand, from Phillip Fulmer and Lane Kiffin, Ryan Bolinger applied for the job and was hired at Sequoyah. A new electricity surged through the Sequoyah team and fan base. No one dreamed that entering their third season with Bolinger at the helm, the team would still be searching for its first victory. “It has been hard,” Bolinger admits. “There are hard times in life. You can’t quit. You continue to do the right thing and work hard.” The 2021 season offers some hope for Sequoyah High School football. Here’s why:

COACHES

Two new coaches have been added to the mix at Sequoyah. Dustin Peels, a Sequoyah product, will return as Offensive Coordinator. Last year, he was Defensive Coordinator at Lenoir City. Bryce Ruis comes to the Sequoyah staff from William Blount High School. Ruis will coach the offensive line and the inside linebackers.

Our kids have done really well in 7 on 7 competition. They see what we can do and they are excited for the season to begin.

A NORMAL YEAR

Coach Bolinger points to the fact this will be a normal year. He was hired at Sequoyah around Memorial Day. He was not able to work with his new team in the spring and had no idea about the team or their skill set. Additionally, he needed time to evaluate the coaches he had inherited. THE PHILOSOPHY

Ryan Bolinger came to Sequoyah with a system he wanted to run. He tried to make the players fit his system. He now admits that was a mistake. “In time,” he says, “I learned the key is flexibility. Well into the season, last year, I changed the system to fit my players. As a result, we achieved much better offensive results.”

THE GROUND GAME

Be assured, this year Sequoyah will run the football. The Chiefs have a gifted set of running backs including Luke Lay, Remington Millsaps, Kylan Carson, Ethan Blair and Brody Gilreath. Coach Bolinger also points to the quarterback position. Cooper Self will start. “Cooper has grown, matured and is playing with more confidence,” Bolinger notes. “On the

several starts last year, senior running back Jayden Barker is poised to be the workhorse in the backfield with junior Malik Arnett and freshman Brayden Westfield in the mix. One of the offensive units with the most contributors returning is the receiving corps. “I think that could be a strong point for us,” Martin said when speaking of his receivers. Returning wideouts are senior Kaden Duprey, junior Ryan Littleton, and first year players, senior Lane Hicks and sophomore Chris Alford. At tight end, expect to see sophomore Ben Coleman and senior Jonah Kile. It will be a new look offensive line for Sweetwater this season with only two players with starting experience returning. Senior leader Isaac Croft will be at right tackle and junior Eli Brown at left guard. New starters to that unit will be sophomore center Kai Correll, sophomore right guard Jesus Guzman, with sophomore Ty Webster appearing to be in the lead for the left tackle position. Tres Stone and Jovan Johnkins were starters along the offensive line last season but will be defensive starters this season in Sweetwater’s new two unit philosophy. The offensive line will lack size but can hopefully make up for that with explosiveness and speed. With all the new faces and multiple sets the Wildcats will run this season, this should be an exciting offense to watch. Defensively the Blue and Gold should be an athletic unit. Even though they may give up some size to their opponents, Coach Martin is pleased at how they have performed so far in preseason practice. “I get excited. Right now in practice, they are hard to handle,” Martin said. This group will operate from their base 3-4 defensive scheme and have several returning starters from last year. Two time All Region selection, junior lineman Jovan Johkins will be back to anchor this unit along with senior linebacker Dominic Cannady, junior lineman Clinton Arwood, linebacker Jonah Kile, and senior lineman Tres Stone. Other players set to stand out in the front seven are linebackers Ty Webster and Brandon Westfield. In the secondary, be on the outlook for junior Dallas Presley, junior Hayden Dotson, Wyatt McClure, and junior Amarion Palmer. According to Martin, the keys to this defense’s success will be to line up right and get to the ball in a hurry. As far as special teams are concerned, Jesus Guzman right now appears to be the leader for both kicking and punting duties, but Wyatt McClure and Kaden Duprey may compete their way into the mix at punter. Leadership will be paramount for this team. As a whole, Sweetwater is returning nine starters from last season and six returning seniors with the addition of two, first year playing, seniors. Coach Martin will be relying heavily on the players he has appointed to his leadership team to set the tone on and off the field. Those players are Croft, Kile, Stone, Johnkins, and Duprey. The 2021 schedule will add some intrigue to the season in its own right. Five of the first six games for Sweetwater will be played at King Berrong Stadium before ending the regular season with four straight on the road. Sweetwater will take the field against two new opponents this season compared to last year’s schedule. With the new classification and region alignments in the off season, Red Bank has departed Region 3 AAA and moved up to Class 4A. The Kingston Yellow Jackets’ petition to move from Region 2 AAA to Region 3 AAA was approved by the TSSAA. This new region matchup, which will renew an old time rivalry with Kingston, will be September

Another addition to the schedule this season is a non region matchup with 5A opponent McMinn County on the road October 8th. Other road games will include Loudon, Brainerd, Tellico Plains, and McMinn Central. Home games along with the Kingston matchup will be Meigs County to start the season, Rockwood, Sequoyah, and Signal Mountain. Sweetwater Wildcats fans have a lot to look forward to this season. This team has a good mix of returning talent and new faces. Coupled with Coach Martin’s and his staff’s new philosophy to get more players involved on the field, this should be a fun team to watch.

group. “They’ve put in the work and it’s showing. They’re inexperienced, but probably the biggest group we’ve had since I’ve been here.” It starts with Senior Landen Phillips at nose and center. “He’s a big, powerful man-child, and getting on some college radars. I look for him to have a big senior season.” Junior d-lineman Cameron Coleman is a force to be reckoned with. “Cam is a gifted athlete and great with his hands. I have more faith in him than he does himself. He has great potential. Junior Isaac Dalton is a blue collar worker, true Tellico mentality. He comes in, goes to work, and does his job.” Junior Cohen Miller and Senior Logan Holley will help hold down the fort too. “Cohen’s a two— Jon Rechtorovic year starter, the only o-line Head Coach returning starter. Logan has great footwork and moves well.” Maroon faithful hope that line strength bodes well for Tellico’s backfield. Fullbacks will be bruisers Shaw, Jenkins, and Moore. “I guarantee you kids get tired of being hit in the face by those three all night.” Tailbacks will be Cox and Webb. “Those two both run hard and downhill with the ball in their hands.” With plenty of weapons at his disposal and a big line in front of him, the keys to the offense will be firmly in the hands of Junior Quarterback Landon Hollinghead. Coming off a sophomore campaign posting 1,032 total yards and 12

Logan (Kev) Cox breaks a run up the sideline. big and physical.” Freshman Ryan Shaffer may also get some looks. “His motor’s always on. I’m interested to see how he develops.” The Bears secondary and receivers are loaded with potential. Most experienced is senior veteran Major Carter, a household name since his county MVP sophomore season. “He’s a big, physical receiver who makes a good target. On defense he’s a solid and smart cornerback. I trust him to be on the opposite side of the field from our sideline. He just makes good decisions.” “Senior Ethan Teague is another receiver and strong safety. He’s very athletic and has really grown physically. He was a little bitty squirt when I first got here. He’s turned into a nice player on both sides of the ball. I expect a lot from him this season. Junior Haiden Thomas is fast. He flies around well and does a good job reading the quarterback’s eyes. The other corner and receiver is Sophomore Burgess Tate. He’s tall and long with a lot of ability, but green as grass. He’s a basketball guy, but can become a fine football player.” Senior Ethan Thomas will also see time at corner and receiver. “He’s another one that has really grown. He overcame an injury last season and really works hard.” Bear success may be most determined, though, down in the trenches. Lineman depth could be an issue, especially late in ballgames or if the dreaded injury bug bites. But, there is no issue with ability, as all are very athletic big men. The weight room has also treated them well, returning a stronger

touchdowns, Hollinghead looks to reach even greater heights. His improved work ethic has gotten the coaches’ attention. “He’s been like a sponge, soaking up a lot more from us. He keeps wanting to know more, and it’s paying off. He went to a pretty big QB camp down in Louisiana that just flipped a switch in him. If he continues to work and perform like he has since camp, he could have a special season. He’s got such a strong arm and now his deep ball accuracy has really improved. A lot of it is confidence. Sometimes he’s his own worst enemy, but he’s starting to see he can do some things at a high level. He knows he’s still got a lot of work to do and seems willing to do it. He’s been a starter since his freshman year. At this point, he’s seen every defense out there. Now, it’s about making quicker reads and good decisions. The game is slowing down for him, and that’s good for all of us.” Hollinghead’s backup is Freshman Omar Miller. “Omar is a good athlete. At quarterback he’s trying to transition to the speed of the high school game. He’s working hard, and my hope is that he’ll watch Landon lead the offense, and when he gets his opportunities make the most of them.” Others hoping to make an impact for the Bears this season are Senior Michael Fogelgren and juniors Brady Cook, Case Grant, and Riley Burnett. Sophomores include Sony Duncan, Jacob Davidson, Elijah Helton, Landon Brown, Landen Thomas, Ezra Lance, Brandon French, Luke Harris, and Brody Williams. Freshmen are Bradyn Interline, Braden Reed, Jericho Moses, Chance Shapiro, Jonathan Gourley, Austin Hall, Malachi Roberts, Adam Holley, and Eden Byers.

He served in that role until 2016 when he became the color analyst, the capacity he currently fills. Artie is also WMTY’s play-by-play voice for Lady Wildcats Basketball. He is an 8th grade history teacher at Lenoir City Middle where he also serves as Athletics Director and Defensive Coordinator for the school’s football team. Their team is dedicated to bringing the best playby-play coverage of the Chiefs throughout the season. MEET OUR TEAM: RICK MCCRARY has been calling the games for WGSM from the start. He was excited and honored to cover the Chiefs in the State Baseball Tournament in 2014. Rick grew up in Loudon, but now lives in Madisonville. He is a retired school teacher and coach from Lenoir City High School and has a passion for sports. Rick is the play-by-play guy for Chiefs Football, and he calls Chiefs Basketball and the Baseball games as well.

BRYAN BURCHFIELD started working at WMTY out of high school in 2002. He was promoted to sales manager in 2006, then to station manager in 2008. Bryan began doing play-by-play of Sweetwater Basketball in 2003. He joined the football crew in 2005 as color analyst and became the play-by-play voice of Sweetwater Football in 2006.
