2020 SEQUOYAH HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL CHIEFS

SEQUOYAH HIGH SCHOOL

CHIEFS HOPE TO START FAST AND ERASE 2019 WOES The 2019 football season for the Sequoyah Chiefs was not one Chiefs fans hope to repeat. The county’s largest high school lost to both county rivals, Tellico Plains and Sweetwater, during a season where wins were hard to get. However, you can’t help but feel a new spirit RYAN of optimism BOLINGER radiating from the Sequoyah Chiefs Sequoyah team. Head Coach It all starts with second-year head coach Ryan Bolinger. His Chiefs players and assistant coaches have a better

understanding of the culture he wants to bring to the program. “Changing a culture can be hard,” he said. “It’s gotten a bit easier. They know what to expect now.” And while the Coronavirus pandemic has cast a cloud of uncertainty over fall sports, Bolinger has a simple message to his young Chiefs. “Focus on our goals, not the distractions,” he said. Bolinger said so far, the virus has not cost him any Chiefs from coming out to play this season. He expects about 60 players or so will be clad in red for the 2020 season. When it comes to offense, the Chiefs will display a multiple look. The offensive design is crafted to give the opposing defense different looks to worry about when often the plays Sequoyah will run will be the exact same, but just out of

different formations. As preseason heads toward the regular season if the Coronavirus allows, there are three quarterbacks fighting for the starting job for the 2020 season. The head coach does not see that as a problem. “We have three guys we feel good about,” he said. “They all do different things well.” If anyone has an edge toward leading the Chiefs offense, Bolinger said it could be Cooper Self, a sophomore. “He has a good head on his shoulders,” Bolinger said. Remmington Millsaps will be a key receive for Sequoyah no matter who spins the ball from the quarterback slot, however, the Chiefs are not married to any one style of play on offense. “We definitely take what the defense gives us,” Bolinger said. “But if it plays to our strength to do the opposite, we will do that.” The coach points to a playoff game against Anderson County last November when the Chiefs racked up 260 yards on the ground even in a losing effort against one of the top teams in the state. The running lanes where there and Sequoyah took them.

Oldies 98.3 FM 6

A top runner for Sequoyah again this fall will likely be Luke Lay, who will run behind lineman like Gage Carmley. On defense, the Chiefs will be led by the aforementioned Lay and Millsaps along with Justice Benson and Brody Gilreath as in all seven starters will return on defense. When it comes to the kicking game, Sequoyah had yet to name a starting kicker or punter as publication time for this preview. Bolinger believes confidence will be a key for the Chiefs this season and nothing will do more for that than getting off to a good start in 2020. He said when things did not start off well for Sequoyah in games last year, things could snowball on his young team. “That’s a hard thing to break,” the head coach said of losing your cool when things start off badly. But Bolinger feels like if the Chiefs can jump out of the gate fast, 2020 could look a lot better than last year. “That would be huge,” he said of a fast start. 2020 SEQUOYAH HIGH SCHOOL BAND The Sequoyah High School Marching Band is the largest scholastic performing arts program in Monroe County. Band Directors Keith and Linda Trout lead the band to compete and perform in many various venues throughout the year. Competing on a national level, the Sequoyah Band spends much time in practice and preparation. All of this is in addition to inspiring our Chief Spirit at Friday night football games.

Enduring blazing hot practices throughout the summer, the Sequoyah Band puts in a lot of hard work that is often unknown and overlooked. In recent years, the Sequoyah Band has competed in globally recognized competitions, such as Bands of America and Winter Guard International. But for the Sequoyah Band, the highlight of every week is cheering on the Chiefs!!

2020 SWEETWATER HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL WILDCATS

SWEETWATER HIGH SCHOOL

MARTIN: “BE PREPARED” 2020 LOOKS TO BE WILD ONE Due to the uncertainty surrounding sports during the Coronavirus pandemic, Sweetwater High Wildcats head football coach Mike Martin has stressed a couple of messages to his team and coaching staff for the 2020 season. First: Be flexible. Backup players need to be ready to step up in case others get sick. Teams might play in front of 50 fans or maybe a full stadium. Teams might load on the bus ready to go only to find out that can’t play MIKE that night due to sickness. And last but not least: MARTIN Whether on the practice Sweetwater Wildcats field or under the Friday Head Coach night lights, Martin wants his players to play hard and smart but also he wants them to enjoy every moment. Who knows what the season holds during these trying times? “You better cherish every moment you are out there,” he said.

Like all three county high school coaches, Martin is starting his second year at the helm of the Wildcats for whom he excelled on Carter Field himself in the 1980s. Martin went on to have had a successful coaching career at other East Tennessee high schools and the Wildcats faithful had longed for the day he would return to SHS to coach. They got that wish last year as he took over the head coaching duties after previously serving as an assistant coach at Sweetwater. Martin led the Wildcats to a 7-3 regular season before the Wildcats fell on the road in the first round of the playoffs to Smith County, 28-27, after suffering two blocked PATs. Martin learned a lot about his players as they went through the season and particularly that heartbreaking playoff loss. “Our kids will fight,” he said. “I was super proud of these kids.” But the 2019 season is over. Three of the teams on Sweetwater’s schedule are preseason Top 10 teams: Meigs County, Loudon High and Red Bank. Martin said many believe the Rockwood Tigers could have their best team in several years as well. Also, the pandemic has already had an effect

on the 2020 Wildcats’ roster. He had expected 55, maybe even up to 60 players this fall. However, Martin said the Wildcats’ numbers will be below that but not abnormally low for a school Sweetwater’s enrollment size. “I normally pick up four or five freshman the first week off school but that has not happened this year and I think it is definitely due to Covid,” he said. The pandemic appears to have also cost Sweetwater some veteran players. Martin said several players who would have been key depth or perhaps even starters have opted not to come out this season. Some other players got jobs during the long layoff from school and are focusing on their work instead of football. Martin said he respects their decision and the Wildcats will take the field with the players they have all the while harboring high expectations. The coach said the offense in particular is ahead of where it was in the preseason last year. And speaking of offense, this year’s Wildcats offense will be led by strong-armed senior Austin Long. Even with Sweetwater pounding the ball on the ground last year, Long still managed to throw for more than 1,000 yards often looking to connect on a deep ball. “He has a cannon,” Martin said of Long’s arm. Martin is Sweetwater’s offensive coordinator and the coach said Long is more comfortable with his style of coaching now. The head coach said he is teaching Long that he does not always have to chuck the ball 50 yards down the field. Sometimes it is best just to take what the defense gives you. “He has learned when to listen to me and when to tune me out and go be an athlete,” the Wildcats head coach said. “I think he has matured and his body has matured in the weight room. He is a talented kid and he’s been very coachable.” Coach Ethan Edmiston led a solid offseason weight-lifting program for the team while staying safe with social distancing. Kaleb Johnkins, who has good size, and Ty Ezell are just two of the veteran receivers the Wildcats will rely on. Sophomore Dallas Presley leads a group of talented young receivers along with Ryan Littleton, a growing sophomore. Senior Bryce Johnson brings experience and leadership to the backfield. When it comes to defense, the Wildcats lost five starters from 2019, including experience at linebacker. However, the Wildcats return sophomore defensive lineman Jovan Johnkins, who had an impressive freshman season, as well senior defensive lineman Simon Blomstrom. Anchoring the Wildcat defense will be senior linebacker Bryce Johnson. Senior Carter Holmes brings length to both the offensive and defensive lines, but the Wildcats lost much of their other size due to graduation. “We don’t have the big hogs in their anymore,” Martin admits. He said defensive coordinator David Staff does a great job teaching the fundamentals, which will be key without size up front. The Wildcats will play a bit differently on defense this year to take advantage of the strengths they have while coping with the loss in some weight along the line. Martin has an experienced coaching staff that remains the same in 2020 except for the loss of offensive line coach Adam Dowell, who has been deployed with the military. Gabe Sneed has replaced him. BEARS’ BUY-IN, WORK ETHIC BUILDS OPTIMISM FOR 2020 The Tellico Plains Bears are looking to improve on last year’s 2019 3-8 football campaign that had its own share of highlights. The Bears earned a rare win over cross-county rival Sequoyah last year, making the Bears’ game against Sweetwater a battle for the bragging rights for the best team in the county. The Bears fell to Sweetwater but appeared to have learned a lot from last season. JON Like the RECHTOROVIC county’s other two Tellico Plains Bears head coaches, Head Coach the Bears’ Jon Rechtorovic is in his second year. And like those coaches, he continues to establish his way of playing football. “These kids have done a great job buying in,” Rechtorovic said.

Tellico Plains is a close-knit, hardworking community and the Maroon Bears exhibited those characteristics, their head coach proudly points out. “The Tellico community has a great work ethic,” Rechtorovic said. While the Bears are looking to build on last year, like teams all across the state they face a silent and unseen opponent, the Coronavirus. It would be easy to let the fears and uncertainty created by the pandemic to unsettle his team but the Bears head coach has a philosophy to nip that in the bud. “We just show up and go to work every day,” Rechtorovic said. “We can only control what we can control.” If the Bears are to improve upon their 2019 campaign, they will have to do it without one of Monroe County’s best football players, Dale Rinehart, the doit-all quarterback who graduated this spring. At the time of the printing of this publication, if the Bears head coach knows who will replace Rinehart, he his keeping it to himself. Landon Hollinghead, a sophomore who got a

No matter who plays quarterback, two juniors will be among the important players for the Bears on offense, receiver Major Carter and running back Logan Cox. However, don’t be surprised to see many other Bears step up. This season, the Bears will share the load on offensive and will be willing to run or pass to get the job done. Their coach would prefer not to highlight individual players because he knows his team must function as one. Rechtorovic Sophomore Landon Hollinghead will believes the key for be vying for the starting QB position this season. — Photo by Della Williams the Bears will be keeping what should be a good offensive line healthy. Depth can always be a problem for smaller high schools like Tellico Plains. The Bears will have a roster of just over 40 players. As you would expect with a small high school, many of the players will play both offense and defense. The Bears will face a tough region schedule with Bledsoe County, Marion County, Tyner and more. But Tellico fans can expect a team that will fight on every down and a team that is growing more comfortable taking cues from their head coach.
