the band itself.

They closed their encore with “Nights of the Living Dead,” but the highlight might have been when they were stalling, waiting for an amp to be fixed, and they played “Patience, Babe,” a nearly a cappella track, featuring their chorus of flowing voices. I believe the keyboardist was the only accompaniment, using a trashcan lid to toss a handful of either rocks or coins into the air — the delay between each of them smacking the thin metal slightly different upon each catch. The perfect accompaniment: the subtle insert of something both planned and irregular at the same time, providing a mixture of rhythm and spontaneity.
