Bright lights to shine on Nantucket in 2015 In 2015, the bright lights of filmmaking and Hollywood premiers will shine on Nantucket.

The greatest glare and loudest cheers will come in mid March, with the premier of the Hollywood blockbuster “In the Heart of the Sea,” Nantucket historian Nat Philbrick’s account of the disastrous encounter of the whale ship Essex with a leviathan whale, the story that inspired Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick.” Brought to the screen by Oscar winning director Ron Howard, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, the actor recently named by People Magazine as the “Sexiest Man Alive.”

As if that’s not enough to draw throngs into theaters, the story includes survivors stranded at sea and the account of their cannibalism. See my report elsewhere in this issue about the recent visit to Nantucket by the cast and crew of “In the Heart of the Sea” including Howard and Hemsworth.

The debut of “Heart” comes on the heels of two other movies filmed on the island over several weeks in 2014: director Jay Craven’s indie film “Peter and John” and Nantucket actor-director John Shea’s romantic thriller “Grey Lady.” Yet another camera crew is due to take up residence here in 2015 for “Altar Rock,” written by novelist Kristin Alexandre and filmed by award-winning cinematographer Andrzej Bartkowiak, both of whom own homes on Nantucket.

Meanwhile, we’re moving into the slower season on the island, a time when many of us turn to nesting at home or spending quiet time in places that make Nantucket special. You’ll get a taste of a classic antique Nantucket cottage in this issue, one that makes a perfectly manageable and cozy in-town home.

We also look at public spaces that offer shelter from the cold, whether you’re visiting them for contemplation, reading and study, or recreation. If the outdoors is more your thing, Sarah Oktay, director of the UMass-Nantucket Field Station, highlights our island’s natural flora and fauna.

As you carry this copy of Nantucket Home through downtown Nantucket streets, take in the bright holiday decorations including the colorful, brightly-lit Christmas trees provided by the Town of Nantucket and Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce, with decorations by the island’s businesses and non-profit groups. For many, this is the most special time of the year on Nantucket.

But it’s during the winter months that the bones of the island show strongest and the resilience of the island’s natural environment best shows its vitality.

F

all, winter, and spring are some of the most beautiful months to be on Nantucket. As the summer residents and tourists drift away, social schedules open up and the opportunity beckons to get outside, walk and enjoy our island’s quiet.

Although the days are shorter, the early morning and late afternoon light is spectacular as the sun’s rays hit the dunes, grasslands and trees, at a low angle producing a radiant glow. Our clean atmosphere creates spectacular sunrises and sunsets, and although the days are short, it is well worth the time to visit a beach or explore the cranberry bogs. The winter light is so special that for years the Nantucket Field Station offered a winter painting class designed to capture the brilliant hues that accompany sunlight viewed at this latitude. Photographers around the island skillfully capture the open landscape, roiling seas and brilliant night skies.

We have some bodacious winds and accompanying blizzards, but it helps one appreciate the cobblestone streets lined with snow-covered houses, dormant gardens, and wintery lanes. In fact, Nantucket’s charming streets and neighborhoods truly suit the fall and winter weather and seem

most “Nantuckety” during the off season. This time of year, I truly appreciate the beauty of the ponds and harbor, which can be more easily seen once the leaves have fallen. In the late summer, I tend to be more concerned for our wetlands as we strive to limit excess nutrients entering our waterways from overzealous fertilizer applications and septic systems, often only five to six sandy feet above our groundwater.

Our natural world has evolved over the short time that Nantucket has been an island—that’s 12,000 years, give or take a millennia—to adapt to the windy and sometimes extreme weather. The older cottages, like the 100-year-old office at the Nantucket Field Station, are nestled into small hills to gain protection from the wind. Our trees and bushes are sculpted by the wind, and our plants have adapted to the weather and salt spray.

There are several evergreen species and pines on Nantucket that thrive on our windswept shores. Some are native and some are interlopers. Each time I walk in the woods, whether at Windswept Bog and Stump Pond or Shawkemo ( Continued on pg 100 )

s is true for many resort communities with high property values and limited housing stock, Nantucket’s lower wage earners are challenged to gain home ownership on the island.

The problem has grown even more acute on Nantucket, where median home selling prices on the island have risen above $750,000. With more than 50% of the island in permanent conservation, available land to build new housing continues to shrink and steady demand, over time, pushes median home prices ever higher. Those forces put new homeownership on the island usually out of reach for teachers, policemen, nurses and blue-collar workers.

Forty years ago, the Town of Nantucket anticipated the crunch for middle class new home ownership and set aside just over nine acres off Surfside Road to be developed one day for affordable homes. Through collaborations among several local nonprofits concerned with housing, ground broke this fall on the 40-house development, with more than 300 persons already expressing interest in the neighborhood.

To qualify, potential homebuyers must show incomes under 150% of the Nantucket county median income, which will mean a range of about $60,000 to just over $110,000 annually depending on family size. A certain number of homes will be set aside for sale in different income categories, with

final applicants determined through a lottery, which is yet to be scheduled. Once the process has begun, applicants must qualify for a standard bank mortgage.

Of the 40 homes planned for the project, 36 will be designed and built by Housing Assistance Corporation of Cape Cod, the organization hired by the Town of Nantucket and Nantucket Housing Authority to manage and execute the development. The Nantucket chapter of Habitat for Humanity will build the remaining four homes. Architectural designs include one-, two- and three-bedroom homes with yards and private driveways.

Early funding for the project comes from an award of $1.8 million from Community Preservation Act funds on Nantucket and a state housing grant in 2011 of $1.45 million to build the first 16 units. Final sale prices of the homes are yet to be determined. The development partners anticipate the first homes on the site will be built by spring of 2015.

This sweet little cottage was built in 1739 for Captain Charles Gardner on Gull Island Lane. A curved stone wall in front defines the entry. In summer, the ground is covered with myrtle on each side of the front path.

The current sitting room was probably once called a parlor. When McBournie and Richards lived here it was the heart of the house.

hen Gary McBournie and Bill Richards first saw the little cottage it was a falling down wreck. But they recognized it’s inherent value as an historic structure, having been built in 1739. Most of all they appreciated its location on a little lane right in town.

An interior designer with a lot of experience in renovations, both on Nantucket and in Boston, McBournie knew he could reclaim this cottage. The two partners eagerly set out to restore what they perceived as a much-neglected little jewel.

Gull Island Lane is located in the oldest part of town, and although many have passed it often, one might hardly notice it at all. This area backs up to the Lily Pond and was once surrounded by water, thus

its name, Gull Island. Today it is simply a little lane on which sits two houses, a barn and the cottage that was moved down the hill in the 1920s to its present site.

In July of 1846, a niece of Captain Gardner’s paid him a visit and wrote in her diary, “They live in a little cottage place on a little rise of ground. Dined at Uncle Charles’ on blackberry pudding.” The area was covered with blackberry bushes, perhaps accounting for the name of nearby Blackberry Lane, just up the street in what was the original town of Sherburne.

The cottage went through several ownerships, but no one bothered to fix it up until 2007 when McBournie and Richards realized its potential. The two men share a love of old houses and have lived in several on Nantucket and in Boston. So it was with confidence that they were

DREAMLAND FILM & PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

Though a part of island life for almost two centuries—the building has served as a Quaker meetinghouse, a roller rink, a hat factory and hotel—the Dreamland first became a movie theatre in 1911. Since reopening in 2012, after a complete remodel and renovation, the Dreamland Film and Performing Arts Center has been at the center of yearround life on the island. Over the winter, programs include Nantucket Film Festival screenings (often followed by Skype talks with filmmakers), opera from the Metropolitan Opera from New York City, National Theatre from London, and live performances of the Bolshoi Ballet. Though in the end, on a lonely winter’s day, the restorative powers of getting out of the house and joining friends inside the Dreamland’s popcorn-scented halls for a firstrun feature cannot be overstated.

Why doesn’t the 46-foot whale skeleton suspended over the main section of the Whaling Museum have a name?

ince starting out in Southeast Massachusetts in 1967, Lydon and his family business James Lydon, Sons & Daughters, has installed outer sheathing including shingling and roofs of all sorts, on thousands of buildings in the region. For the last 25 years, his business has been almost entirely on Nantucket, which is also his home.

Whether a roof is made of asphalt tiles, wooden shingles, metal or slate, on an island 30 miles at sea it has to withstand forces unique to the environment. On Nantucket that means, first and foremost, installations able to withstand hurricane force winds that can rock island structures year round, especially in the colder months.

“It’s also the water and salt spray,” said Lydon, “but whatever we put on has to withstand the often incredible winds we get out here.” In March of this year, for example, Nantucket recorded a wind gust of 84 miles per hour in a spring nor’easter. Frequent gusts of 60-70 mph are common in such storms, which might last for a couple of days. “Snow’s not much of a problem here,” noted Lydon, “since we usually get so little of it. But a roof in our area has to hold up to that, too.” ( Continued on pg 86 )

On a typical two-story colonial house, with one L-shaped extension, a roof made of asphalt can be installed in a few days and at a cost just under $20,000, depending on the complexity of the surfaces.

On Nantucket, with its costlier houses and design conscious architects and homeowners, many opt for red cedar shingles or even slate, both high-quality roofing materials in use for hundreds of years throughout the world.

Wood might cost two or three times more than asphalt, and slate can cost exponentially more than that, but those materials can be worth their costs in durability and longevity, according to Lydon. “If installed properly, wood shingles rarely blow off in a heavy windstorm,” asserts Lydon.

Wooden shingles also help keep inside temperatures cooler than asphalt, which absorbs the heat.

Durability is even more true of slate, notes Lydon, who mentions an in-town home on which a heavy, purple Welsh slate roof has lasted almost 180 years,

with modest upkeep and repairs. Those roofs can also take weeks to install on larger buildings, but amortized over their lifetimes, wooden shingles and slate can prove to be highly cost effective roofs.

Hundreds of Nantucket homeowners and many trustees of the island’s public buildings have turned to Lydon—his is one of the most senior companies among about two dozen or so roofers on Nantucket—for his expertise and many years of experience. A roof on Nantucket’s new high school was among his early jobs, which since then have included Brant Point Lighthouse, the animal hospital on Macy Lane, the Nantucket Historical Association’s Hadwen House on Main Street, and dozens of family homes.

He recently installed a new slate roof on St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Fair Street, where its priceless Tiffany Studio windows are among architectural and decorative elements in need of extra protection.

Sometimes a rescue at sea involves the manpower and resources of the Coast Guard. Sometimes, a guy on a surfboard saves the day. All manner of rescue is remembered and honored at this Egan Institute for Maritime Studies museum on Polpis Road. Reopened in 2008 after a Carpenter Gothic renovation and expansion by architect Neil Parent, these breezy, waterfront rooms house an exhaustive permanent collection of thousands of artifacts large and small: period surfboats, beach carts, Fresnel lenses from Brant Point and Great Point lights, vintage photographs and more. The museum is closed in the off-season.

Until spring we have 2014-15 winter storms to look forward to.

Imagine what it must have been like to face those same extreme winds and inhuman seas without benefit of GPS or radio. That story unfolds here, where visitors year round can take in an antique light on the museum grounds and look out over the most awe-inspiring marshland view on Nantucket.

Arguably the most beautiful interior on Nantucket, Greater Light is the creation of Philadelphia sisters Hanna and Gertrude Monaghan who converted a pig barn on Howard Street, purchased in 1929, into a physical manifestation of artistic and spiritual principles. In her memoir, Hanna Monaghan writes that she and her sister “lived for nothing but art.” The transformation of their summer home was additionally influenced by the Quaker concept of “inner light”— the connection between individuals and God. Here you will find architectural elements salvaged from around the world: Italian columns, 12-foot wrought iron gates, church windows and similar elements harmoniously blended into a bohemian ideal. Closed over the winter, it reopens in Spring—just in time to offer respite from rising tides of ostentation.

Built in 1827, this one room, hipped-roof structure served as church, school and meeting house central to life in “New Guinea”—the Nantucket neighborhood around Five Corners in mid island. Fully restored in 1999 and operated today by the Museum of African American History in Boston, the beauty of this post and beam interior stems both from the shipbuilding vernacular of its architecture and also from its place in history. Nantucket’s evergreens such as pines, spruces, hollies and cedars are able to survive winter because they have shored up their defenses to the cold. Their needle-like or scalelike foliage is covered with a heavy wax coating, and the fluid inside their cells contains substances that resist freezing. Thus the foliage of evergreens can safely withstand all but the most severe winter conditions. Evergreen needles survive for some years but eventually fall because of old age. On Nantucket, the salt content of the surrounding ocean can also lend some protection against freezing temperatures by raising the temperature of freezing water.

FLORA AND FAUNA Walking through our moors, healthlands and sandplain grasslands, you’ll more likely encounter the ubiquitous scrub oak, a short scrappy oak with gnarled branches. Other common trees include tupelo, red maples, the cedars mentioned above, some beeches, black and white oak with understory bushes of bayberry, huckleberry, American hazelnut, arrow-wood and blueberry. The Nantucket Conservation Foundation’s website does an excellent job of describing the

plants you’ll see during your rambles around the island.

Approximately 47% of Nantucket is open space and during the off-season the vistas and miles of trails emphasize the peaceful isolation. During the fall you’ll see shades of red covering the moors as the huckleberry and Virginia creeper and yes, the poison ivy, all turn red. Many of our native grasses turn light gold and make a carpet of undulating color on our gentle hills. Make sure you (and your dog) wear orange during your fall and winter hikes, as many islanders are hunters and they are out and about over much of the island.

Check for ticks, too. Our warm bodies can be more easily detected by ticks against the background of cold outdoor temperatures.

Nantucket winter snowfall totals average about 26”, which is closer to the national average than the 51” falling on the rest of Massachusetts. We are fortunate to be warmer than the mainland in the winter and cooler in the summer because of the buffering effect of the ocean surrounding us, but that is tempered by our average wind velocities year round of 14 mph.

Getting to Home Plate WILLIAM FERRALL For those of us who use our rear bumpers as sticker sounding boards for our causes and passions, we’ve now got a way to show hometown pride.

In early 2013, a group of Nantucket non-profit leaders launched the Nantucket License Plate Committee, which could result in a special license plate featuring the Nantucket location name and a silhouette of the island.

Orders have been going to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation for the $40 special plate since last year. The plate will become reality and go into production by the state only after the first 1,500 applications are received. Until the initial order threshold is reached, MassDOT will hold onto the applications and checks, cashing them only after the initial 1,500-plate goal is reached.

According to the project’s website, more than half the necessary orders have been placed.

The vehicle that will bear the plate must be registered anywhere in the state of Massachusetts. Out of the $40 cost of the plate, $28 is returned to the organizing group. (An additional $20 plate swap fee is due with a vehicle owner’s first order.)

Once the 1,500-plate threshold is reached, the plate will remain in production, continuing to return a portion of each license plate fee to the island. Going forward, at least 25% of the annual share received by the island will go to non-profit organizations that benefit or provide services to children. Community Foundation for Nantucket will receive the monies then distribute them through a donor-advised fund set up for this purpose.

The project is the brainchild of Robert Sarkisian, who launched

the effort to benefit Nantucket Lighthouse School, where he is a trustee, and other Nantucket children’s education programs.

“I’m excited about this being a perpetual way of giving money to the school and other Nantucket children’s groups,” said Sarkisian.

To help make the plate become a reality, the Nantucket License Plate Committee has invited other Nantucket non-profits to join in processing initial applicants in exchange for the $28 portion of the fees during the pre-production phase. Partners in the project so far include Nantucket Booster Club, Small Friends on Nantucket, A Safe Place, First Congregational Church and Nantucket Community Sailing.

Nantucket’s real estate professionals have especially promoted the project. Sarkisian is a broker at Island Properties Real Estate. A Nantucket nonprofit group tried the effort several years ago, but it failed to reach the threshold to launch that plate. Sarkisian believes that the tremendous growth in social media since then will help boost this effort to success.

One of the plates could appear on the rear of Sarkisian’s own prized antique car, a turquoise and white 1951 Buick Special, which many would recognize as an annual participant in the Nantucket Daffodil Festival Antique Car Parade. “I’d love to have the plate on my cars,” he said.

NANTUCKET REAL ESTATE SALES DURING THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER set a record for the highest monthly dollar volume witnessed since 2005. Although there have been a handful of $100 million+ sales months during the past few years, the $152 million in real estate sales on the books for September is bested only

by September and October 2005 which saw monthly sales of over $170 million each. This exceptional sales activity aided in capping off one of the best 1Q-3Q Nantucket real estate performances ever as dollar volume and transaction volume approached levels not seen since the 2006 & 2005 markets respectively. Together with Main Street Construction and other local tradespeople, the design team turned the house into a comfortable, understated but elegant retreat.

Both men like being involved with the details of a project, from the elevation drawings to sometimes even designing the furniture.

Staying mostly authentic to its historic origin, they paid close attention to existing details.

They salvaged as much of the old materials and construction as possible, such as uneven plaster walls and wide floorboards, while putting in new plumbing, heating and necessities for comfortable year-round living.

And they did nothing that did not conform to guidelines of Nantucket Historic District Commission.

Small changes were

made to enable the rooms to function better, such as moving a door to create a powder room downstairs, slightly enlarging the bedroom upstairs, and creating a new kitchen from a shed that was literally hanging by a thread at the back of the house. “What we did was preservation, not renovation,� explained McBournie.

This was a simple Quaker house, but a miniature version of larger homes built at that time on the island. The four working fireplaces surround a central chimney, with one located in each room of the house. A front hallway leads to a narrow stairway straight ahead, with two bedrooms and a bath upstairs.

Downstairs to the right of the entry, a dining room, complete with an oversize fireplace once used for cooking, runs from the front to the back of the house. This was once two rooms, a bedroom and kitchen. Off to

The master bedroom was once used by Captain Gardner, while his crew of eight slept in what is now a small guest bedroom off the hall. A classic American quilt in blue and white is perfect for this room.

the left is a charming living room that the designers furnished with muted colors and artifacts from Nantucket and from flea markets in the south of France.

A smaller, sitting room is off the living room. It’s the kind of room that calls out for curling up with a book.

There is nothing pretentious about the house. “I like the older houses best, even though I work on many new projects as well,” said McBournie.

When it came to decorating the rooms, McBournie and Richards remained unbound by any particular period or style despite the history of the cottage. They used antique pieces from local shops with sisal rugs to cover old painted floorboards. They covered the walls in the sitting room with muted green plaid fabric and painted the window trims, doors and molding a bright white for a fresh feeling.

In the bedroom they used a classic American blueand-white star-pattern quilt and framed seashell watercolors

by McBournie. Captain Gardner once occupied this room, housing his crew of eight in what is now a small nearby guest room. A door behind the captain’s bed led to the smaller room, apparently in order for the Captain to keep tabs on his men. Today the guest room opens into the upstairs hallway.

Once this house was finished, the McBournie and Richards lived in it for a short time before putting it on the market and moving on to their next project. During their brief stay it was furnished with all sorts of personal artifacts and treasures selectively purchased to add character to the home. McBournie and Richards continue to work on new design projects in Nantucket, Boston, Palm Beach and elsewhere, and recently co-authored the book “Living Color: A Designer works Magic with Traditional Interiors,” from Pointed Leaf Press. ( Continued from pg 124 ) For the uninitiated, “In the Heart of the Sea” is Nantucket author Nathaniel Philbrick’s award-winning, best-selling account of the final ocean voyage of the Nantucket-based Essex, which set sail in 1819 for a planned twoand-a-half-year voyage to South America and back. In what became a harrowing story of disaster at sea, in November of 1820 a bull sperm whale attacked the Essex, rupturing its hull and sinking it. Twenty Essex crewmembers managed to survive, adrift in three small boats. Only eight lived beyond 90 days and were eventually rescued.

Brendan Gleeson, who plays Essex seaman Tom Nickerson in his older years, and Ben Wishaw, who plays Herman Melville, were among the few “Heart of the Sea” actors to know Nantucket first-hand, because the two had filmed scenes here between Nickerson and Melville, who used Nickerson’s recollections to write the classic American novel “Moby Dick.”

During an afternoon break from meeting with the press, Gleeson and the youthful Tom Holland, who portrays the younger Nickerson in the movie, strolled to a nearby island home that was the guesthouse owned by Nickerson after his return to Nantucket. A visitor to the guesthouse had convinced Nickerson, who at 14 years old was the youngest crewmember, to write his own account of the disastrous end of the whale ship and its aftermath.

The guesthouse is one of several stops on a 2015 “In the Heart of the Sea” walking tour being planned by Nantucket Historical Association. Other island groups including Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce are planning activities built around the movie and related themes.

For all of the actors visiting Nantucket, with photo shoots by Vanity Fair and Entertainment Weekly among others on their schedule, the hospitable island that week must have felt far removed from the grueling regime they and Howard said they experienced during filming. Actors underwent rugged preliminary training in mariner’s skills and then endured daily 500-700 calories per day diets while filming the story’s account of the survivors adrift at sea. But that was moviemaking, unequal to the horrors of the real story. Through their 90 days of deprivation, the survivors of the Essex sinking and its aftermath eventually resorted to cannibalism for survival.

Besides its lurid elements, developments leading to the planned mid March 2015 release of “Heart of the Sea” suggest it will be succeed greatly as a gripping, widely seen film. It looks like a blockbuster hit in the making, from the growing interests of international media to the imprimatur of Howard as its director to the star power of blonde Australian actor Chris Hemsworth, with his 6’3” stature and chiseled good looks.

For Howard, it’s the immediacy of the film and its story that should bring it widespread notice and huge audiences. Although he sees it as a “boys adventure” on one level—the cast is all men in the ocean bound parts of the story—Howard found it highly relevant for today. “There’s a version of this story that could happen in this time,” he speculated.

Several unfulfilled proposals were floated previously to put Philbrick’s National Book Award winning story on film. A script for “Heart of the Sea” moved among several

possible producers until Hemsworth, who was wrapping up Howard’s recent “Rush,” took it to the Academy Award winning director of “A Beautiful Mind,” “Apollo 13,” “Frost/Nixon” and nearly three dozen other movies.

Howard said the Essex story reminded him structurally of “Apollo 13,” but after reading Philbrick’s book “it became something new and real” to him.

For Philbrick, the wait was worth it. With their visions of “Heart of the Sea” apparently in sync, together Howard and Philbrick finished and expanded on each other’s thoughts about the movie. Philbrick said he appreciates how Howard brought to the project the modern technology to make it look real, from the accurately recreated sailing

ship to the lifelike, menacing whale, resources that Howard promised make “it possible to be more intricate and more psychological than ever before.”

In other words, expect to see, hear and practically feel the grit and pain endured by the crew of the Essex. A Leviathan in Our Midst WILLIAM FERRALL

Director Ron Howard’s film “In the Heart of the Sea,” from the book about the 19th-century Nantucket whale ship Essex, by Nantucket author and historian Nathaniel Philbrick, is set for its debut in March of 2015 from Warner Brothers. Everything points to a blockbuster hit that will put Nantucket history in the spotlight internationally.

ollywood director Ron Howard and the leading actors of his upcoming film “In the Heart of the Sea,” came to the cradle of their movie’s origins last October, to meet with foreign writers and editors at the Nantucket Whaling Museum. Like the tourists that day on Broad Street, who barely noticed the celebrity comings and goings from the museum, most of the film’s entourage marked their first encounter with Nantucket.

Howard and others talked in awe of the huge sperm whale skeleton suspended midair in the museum’s main exhibit hall, the modern remnant of a leviathan aggressor like the one at the core of the movie. Several of those who had never visited the island before—most of “Heart of the Sea” was filmed at Warner Brothers studios near London and in the Canary Islands— marveled that Nantucket reminded them of a movie set.
