From the editor Summer’s End For those of us who live on or visit Nantucket often, the end of summer brings mixed emotions. We greatly appreciate a busy summer season that brings lots of customers to our businesses, to help fill our coffers, and the good times with friends and family. On the other hand, by now many of us are eager to enjoy quieter times, with usually nice weather in early fall and less traffic. (In truth, our island traffic jams happen for just a few weeks out of the year and mostly on rainy days that keep visitors from our beautiful beaches.) Through Labor Day and beyond, though, there’s plenty to keep our calendars full. Our events listings in this issue include the ever-popular Boston Pops on Nantucket—it’s the major annual fundraising event for our all important Nantucket Cottage Hospital—and Nantucket Race Week, with its all-American classic wooden-hull sailboat race, Opera House Cup. Those are just two of the many great perennial and new happenings on the island in coming weeks. Elsewhere in this issue we look at two Nantucket homes where the outdoors plays a big role in home comfort. A Madaket house sits near the water and offers beautiful views of Madaket Harbor. The other home is one of the many historic residences in town on Orange Street and affords its occupants a spectacular view of Nantucket Harbor. Many Nantucketers appreciate any excuse to get outdoors for whatever reason. We look at some recent designs in swimming pools, including the “green” natural pool featured on our cover, that are becoming more and more prevalent at Nantucket residences, whether they’re new construction or fitted into historic properties. Of course, properties on Nantucket are what we’re about. Nantucket Association of Real Estate Brokers has published this magazine for nearly a decade. Last year, we changed the name to Nantucket Home and revamped its design. We’re proud to say that readers and advertisers have responded favorably, with this issue being the largest to date, with the most advertisers ever and the highest page count yet. Much of my appreciation for that growth goes to our art director Barbara Gookin, our in-house advertising designer Kady Decker and to the oversight of the NAREB publications committee. If you’re looking at property on Nantucket, whether it’s a new home for you and your family or a seasonal rental, NAREB’s 250+ members are your best source for finding what’s right for you. They live here. They raise their families here. They own and operate businesses here. They know Nantucket inside and out. Isn’t that the expertise and care that you want when looking for a new home?

The End of R O B E RT B A R S A N T I Photography by Barbara Gookin

S

ometime last week, while I was busy throwing children at Jetties or losing golf balls at Skinners, the tide turned. Summer, which has been flooding the island for months, had come to slack water, and then, the boats swung on their moorings, and summer ebbed. In the morning, the chill slipped in the screen doors and open windows and then slept on the sofa. The traffic on Crooked Lane has slowed, as have the terminal backups on Quaker Lane and Sparks Avenue. The bluefish and stripers are back and rising. The college kids have left suddenly and the owners are back behind the counter, throwing out jokes and shrugging at the line. The

10 nantucket HOME

high school kids have discovered their summer reading and their Spark Notes as football and soccer double sessions loom just outside the harbor. The final big events of the summer fall in these weeks. The Demo Derby reintroduces the islanders to each other, generally at high speed and in reverse. The Sand Castle contest fills the waterline at Jetties while Race Week glides over the sound. Then the boats and the sand architects take their place on the outgoing tide. Summer does not end with a crash and a cocktail party. Rather, it slowly fades out until the parking spaces return to Main Street and the sidewalks and breakfast counters fill with familiar faces. The college kids leave their jobs with t-shirts and hangovers sometime

Something in mid-August. Then, as Labor Day approaches, the families leave and go back to cubicles and classrooms. During late September, the Jupiter Island crowd tips the tennis pro, calls the caretaker, and drifts back down to Florida. The Weddings and Weekenders dribble out around Columbus Day and, by Halloween, the island is left to us. And we are worried. All change is gradual, but the realization is sudden. The tide shifts sometime while we are busy with our cell phones and our sandwiches, and then, when we look up, the water and the hours are racing out of the harbor. Recently, the Taxi Driving Wise Men and the Barstool Prophets have noticed that the tide is running out on the tourism boom. The real estate listings back up for months and the asking price slips

downward. The boat carries fewer passengers and the restaurants seat fewer diners. Empty hotel rooms, empty rental houses, and empty stores dot the island like so many beached boats. The taxis and the barstools cluck and fret with worry. They are right. The age of t-shirts, ice cream, and day-trippers has drawn to a close. In addition, the age of bringing the family for two weeks on the beach is also drawing to an end. The bills have come due. The sewer bill stands in the doorway, followed by ones for trash, gas, electricity, health care, and food. Never mind the spec house gambles, overcharged credit cards, and adjustable rate mortgages that brought Humnantucket HOME 11

mers and jet skis. Whoever is here in 10 years will have to bring those expensive guests in and make them comfortable. One constant in the history of the island is change. The beaches and the sands shift constantly; Sankaty wears away and becomes Tom Nevers. Cisco wears away and becomes Tuckernuck. Fortunes grow and melt, families come and go, and houses rise and fall. A rich man’s house will be a barn in a hundred years and a barn will become a rich man’s house. I spent several days last week weighing down a bench at the Oldest House. The tour buses drove by, the visitors come up and get a tour through the building, but it is a quiet place by and large. The house was built by people who thought the wealth of the island would lie in wool, not oil. Those days, the island had more sheep than people and more people than trees; the world Jethro looked out on every morning was a bare Scottish golf course. Then, as whaling became profitable, the house was bought by the Paddocks. They built a second12 nantucket HOME

ary dwelling, rented a room to a whaling captain, and put 20 people up there. The men were out at the beach or away on boats, the hill was a commune for Amazonian Quakers. Then, as whaling faded and the Paddocks faded as well, the oldest house became a barn. Finally, in the late nineteenth century, the Coffins bought it, “restored” and retired it to spending its next century collecting tourists’ footprints and photographs. The house has seen sheds, barns, gables, and radical surgery at the back. The land around the house has seen roads, farms, gardens, and a Native American landfill. The trees have grown up around the house, including one of the last remnants of the island’s silk industry, a large mulberry tree in the front yard. The prophets and wise men stood in this yard and clucked many times. Jethro Coffin saw the wool trade failing and he moved his family off island. George Turner saw the demand for his barrels fall and switched over to farming. Now, we see fewer tourists walking through and driving past. What will

become of us as the tide goes out? The other great constant in the history of the island is community. No matter what has happened, from fire to drought to war to depression to boom, there has always been an “us.” We have learned how to walk together, gone to school together, married each other, worked with each other, left and finally returned to the island. Rich or poor, young or old, we stop by for a visit, wave on the street, and connect. Our new age features people who live on vast glaciers of wealth; they have names like Chappy, Biff, and Janette. They have wine cellars and airconditioning. They bring chefs and have catered meals at their houses. They give each other monogrammed loot bags for housewarming presents after they fly in on a chartered plane from Amagansett. And still, they make a community. They visit the neighbors, stop in for a cup of coffee and for a gossip and philosophy omelet, then re-connect. Chappy and Melissa are not so different from Jethro and Mary. Or from you and me. The Boom sets, the Boom also

rises, but we endure forever. The community of Nantucket has remained throughout all those changes. Be it Native American, Quaker, or Capitalist, Nantucketers look to each other and their neighbors. The buildings don’t make Nantucket a small town in the sea, the people do. Were life to send me elsewhere for the rest of my life, I would not miss the Oldest House, the cobblestones, or the mansions on Baxter Road. Other places have oceans, moors, and cedar shingles. I would miss all of my neighbors and I would hold them in my heart, free from time and tide, and build my own Nantucket there. NH Former Nantucket High School teacher and essayist Robert Barsanti continues to raise two boys on and off Nantucket while he teaches in the Berkshires. His collection of recent writings, “Milestone Road,” can be found in island bookstores. This column appeared originally on www.nantucketchronicle.com, a web based community for and about those who live on, visit and love Nantucket.

Fired Up, Ready to Go Custom ceramic tiles from Nantucket Tile Makers’ Ackfire Studios capture the spirit of the island.

A

lison MacDonald and Katherine Moore of Nantucket Tile Makers have long been known for their creative tile installations on Nantucket. Both decorative and functional, their tile work now serves in kitchens, spas, bathrooms, entryways and other locations in dozens of homes on the island. MacDonald and Moore say they design with the words of the 19th-century British designer William Morris in mind: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” Over the last three decades, the pair has created some especially artful installations, with mural-like scenes or using iconic Nantucket images. For an installation in a walk-in shower and spa in a rural island home, they created a spectacular scene for the homeowners including the moon and stars in dramatic dark tones of ceramic tiles with cosmic, metallic-colored highlights.

30 nantucket HOME

In recent years, the two have turned their attention to custom ceramic and glass tiles, many of which will soon be available at Marine Home Center on Orange Street on Nantucket. Since 2001, their Ackfire Studio has created colorfully glazed ceramics depicting sea life, sailboats, signal flags, lighthouses, Nantucket lightship baskets, maps of the island, and formal geometric patterns. Their glass versions of tiles depict some of the same simpler shapes in glowing translucent glass and in seashore shades of blues, sea foam greens, turquoise and opaque shades of white. Measuring 3” X 3”, these glass gems are meant to be combined into larger expanses of glass tiling. Nantucket Tile Makers glass items are made from hand-formed glass, which they cut, shape, fuse and “slump” into handcrafted molds. A line of decorative pieces includes window and wall hangings, Christmas tree

ornaments and serving pieces like their ‘Sconset signal flag glass tray, which measures 4” X 24”, to be used as a centerpiece or to serve tapas and hors d’oeuvres. New this year is a series of ceramic signal flag tiles that can be installed to spell out names or as initials. Street sign ceramic tiles can also be ordered with customized names. The ceramic island icon images measure 4” X 4” and can be used as accents to back splashes, on bathroom walls and elsewhere. These designs will be shown for the fist time publicly later this summer at Marine Home Center. To see more from Nantucket Tile Makers and their Ackfire Studio, visit www. ackfirestudios.com. Tradition and formal gardens above Nantucket Harbor LESLIE LINSLEY Photography by Terr y Pommett

Living in an early sea captain’s house overlooking Nantucket Harbor, it would be hard not to imagine the captain and his family living in these same rooms, looking out at the harbor each day. How could you not feel you were a part of Nantucket’s history? 40 nantucket HOME

O

range Street leads one way out of town from the top of Main Street. During the height of Nantucket’s whaling days, many of the houses on this elevated part of the island were owned by sea captains. The backs of these grand old houses face the harbor below. This was considered the ideal location to situate a home. The widow’s walk on top of the building affords an unobstructed view of the harbor, and it was from this vantage point that a captain’s wife could scan the ocean for her homeward mate. Over the years, the interior of this wonderful old house has changed slightly to meet the needs of each new family, but the views are exactly as they were when the first sea captain built this home almost 250 years ago. It’s a fact that can’t be ignored when enjoying a meal in the gazebo, at the edge of the lawn, in sight of the harbor. This house was built in 1771 for a Quaker family. Six rooms were created around a central fireplace. One of the daughters lived in the house until she was 97 years

old. Renovations in the 1890’s expanded the floor plan, and each time the house was sold it was transformed slightly to meet the needs of that new family. Fortunately, while there have been modern renovations with each new ownership, the integrity of the original house has been respected and kept intact. It would seem that our Nantucket Preservation Trust has been doing a fine job enlightening newcomers to the island about the historic value of these early homes. Wide pine floorboards have been refurbished to their original luster. Doors leading from one room to the next have been restored. A new kitchen was replaced by the past owner in what was once a windowless workshop, and the bathrooms were modernized. The back porch was enclosed with large windows and screens for summer enjoyment. I first visited this house when it was owned by Ed and Joan Lahey, who brought to this project much experience with old houses. This was their fourth renovation on the island. The Laheys have since sold the captain’s house and downsized to a smaller in-town home. Once again, they’ve

used their experience, talent and good taste to refurbish and personalize another Nantucket home. The real star of the Orange Street house, however, is the breathtaking harbor view, the perfect backdrop for summer entertaining in the gazebo at the edge of the property. A small koi pond is a fascinating distraction amid the surrounding lush gardens of flowers, planted by local landscape designer Lucinda Young. The interior decoration of the house was no less spectacular. The Laheys had furnished each room with appropriate antiques and family heirlooms, many of which have been in their families for generations. The furniture, accessories, wallpaper and floor coverings were tastefully chosen to reflect the elegance of the house when it was first occupied by a family of prominence on the island. Ed Lahey is a boating enthusiast who enjoyed adding his touch to the interior design, mixing marine art with family photographs. Personalizing the house further with a patriotic color scheme and a star motif, Joan Lahey, who studied paint-

ing techniques at the famous Isabel O’Neil studio workshop in New York City, stenciled the back staircase to match the starstudded carpet on the front stairway. Collections of island-related crafts such as scrimshaw and Nantucket lightship baskets were tastefully displayed throughout the house. This is a home that is at once elegant and comfortable, a family home enjoyed by three generations. Now this home has new owners who undoubtedly have added their personal tastes throughout. These wonderful old houses have history and stories to tell . When we pass by them by year after year, going to and from town, it is comforting to know that they have not changed much over 200 years. Their preservation is part of what makes Nantucket so extraordinary. NH

Social Calendar

Dog Days of Summer The pace continues full tilt on Nantucket’s event and social scene during late summer, with festivals, galas and cocktail parties continuing through Labor Day Weekend.

In

ancient Rome, the dog days of summer ran from late July to late August and were usually the hottest days of the season. Here on Nantucket, the same could be said for the social scene at that time of year, with the biggest events and hottest ticket demands of the year falling during those weeks. In search of antiques, speedy sailing regattas, fireworks or music and theater, thousands of Nantucket residents and visitors are drawn to late summer galas, parties and performances through Labor Day and into fall. Most events are for a good cause, with worthy beneficiaries. Whether it’s one of our theater companies, a private school, preservation group, the new Nantucket Music Festival, Nantucket Cottage Hospital, or Nantucket Historic Association, the island’s non-profits depend heavily on the support and generosity of audiences during the weeks of summer. Families will find plenty of offerings; other events are designed for sophisticated adult fun. Most happenings help support the many non-profit groups on Nantucket that work year-round to provide arts and entertainment, health-related support and social services. The new Nantucket Music Festival will present two days of bands and solo performers on the fields of Tom Nevers, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, with concerts to benefit Nantucket Community Music Center.

52 nantucket HOME

In early August, thousands of island residents and visitors alike gather on Jetties Beach for the annual Boston Pops on Nantucket concert, an evening of musical fun with the revered orchestra, to benefit Nantucket Cottage Hospital. This year’s featured performer is the ABBA tribute group Arrival from Sweden. With general admission tickets at just $30 for adults and $10 for children, the concert promises to provide a lot of fun, with sand between your dancing toes and oohs and ahs, from late afternoon into the night. Over nine days from early to mid August, sailors and fans of classic wooden-hull boats visit the island for Nantucket Race Week and the famed Opera House Cup regatta. With a half-dozen or more events daily to close out the summer, our list is neither exhaustive nor detailed. Visit the sponsoring organizations’ websites for event times, ticket prices and locations. To keep up with Nantucket events yearround, visit the island’s newspaper of record The Inquirer & Mirror at www.ack.net, see website and email newsletter Mahon About Town at www.mahonabouttown.com or visit the website of seasonal newspaper Yesterday’s Island at www. nantucket.net. New designs and advanced systems are changing what’s possible in a home swimming pool. Photography by Chris Bloom

ewer designs and advanced mechanical systems, combined with the expertise of contemporary designers and installers, have upped the notion of what’s possible in a home swimming pool. Nantucket has come a long way since the island’s first pool, which according to Nantucket Historical Association was installed in 1906 in ‘Sconset as a cement structure with saltwater. Several knowledgeable local sources estimate that today the island probably has more than 500 private pools installed—most are exterior pools but more than a few are indoor—with up to 50 additional ones being installed annually. Many are highly sophisticated, designed by architects, and with costly upper-end configu-

rations that can run well into the six figures for elaborate pool-spa combinations or so-called “infinity” and similar pools built on challenging terrain. Still, even owners of smaller in-town lots are fitting attractive, modern pools into their rear and side yards. One of the latest developments in new pool engineering and design has already taken hold in Europe and countries around the world including Canada. Echoing the desire for more environmentally sensitive building practices and designs, both private and public swimming pools have steadily adopted greener equipment and mechanical systems. Worldwide, more than 20,000 “natural swimming pools” have been

built, using filtration and maintenance methods that operate without chemicals, including chlorine, and usually using plants and other natural materials to keep their water clean and safe through biological filtering systems. There’s much to attract a homeowner to the notion of installing or transforming an existing swimming pool into a naturally filtered one that’s chemical free and relies on biological filters and plants. Among the most transformative of these designs are pools by BioNova®, one of several international companies designing and building these systems. On Nantucket, one such pool has been installed so far by the local company Waterscapes by Jesse Dutra. The group mostly designs and

Besides the healthy nature of swimming without chlorine, artificial saltwater or other additives, natural swimming pools are often colorful and attractive additions to the residential landscape, with many built in natural, organic shapes that can fool some into thinking they’re a naturally occurring pond. Although they might appear to be completely natural, the biological filtration systems can be installed in separate nearby pools, leaving swimming areas free of plants and other biological matter. ing levels and other amenities that owners want. You might think that natural swimming pools are a relative new development and mostly an outcome of the surging “green movement” in building practices and materials. In fact, the first of these pools appeared in the early 1980s in Austria and spread into Germany and throughout Europe. Not limited to only private home pools, a public natural swimming facility was built in Germany in 1998. Construction began just last year on the first public swimming facility in North America to use natural biological designs, in Minneapolis. overseeing a full range of outdoor services including designing soft landscaping with plants, hard landscaping with stone and similar materials, pool design and maintenance, and associated services. Last year, he and his sister, Emily Dutra, formed Dutra Designs, with her now handling the gardening and landscaping activities, what they call the “softscape” work. His existing Waterscapes by Jesse Dutra provides the pool design and installation services. With the Dutra siblings’ combined 40 years of experience, the companies oversee landscaping for dozens of Nantucket customers, with Waterscapes installing about a dozen pools annually. Jesse Dutra says he was especially drawn to partnering with BioNova® because of his longtime concern with landscape design that adopts self-sustaining, organic methods and

keeps in mind “planting with a purpose.” Most of Dutra’s work is done with close oversight by him and his staff on all phases, from design through construction, keeping the project mostly in-house from start to finish, to limit theirs and the client’s need for subcontractors. After an installation is complete, the Dutras often continue as their clients’ maintenance company. “We bring a lot to the table,” said Jesse Dutra. “We understand the need for timeliness in installation, local restrictions and the complex design and construction techniques” often needed on Nantucket. “Knowing these things also makes our work easier and more efficient when working with other landscapers, something we do often and enjoy.” According to Dutra, he has plenty of business to keep his year-round and

seasonal crews busy, and he has turned down some new projects to make sure his attention remains high on the details of current and ongoing projects. “I’ve learned through longtime experience on Nantucket and ‘the school of hard knocks’ what can go wrong and how best to do things.” With over 60 pool projects to Waterscape’s credit, and many more small and large landscape projects under their belts, Jesse and Emily Dutra have become a “go to” team for many Nantucket homeowners, whether for new construction or improvements to existing properties.

According to those knowledgable, Nantucket probably has more than 500 home pools installed today

TREASURes If you’re an inveterate hunter of treasures in second-hand stores... Nantucket gives you two options where your purchases will help a worthy local cause and just might leave you with a new prized possession. Either store also makes an excellent source for furnishing rentals or starter homes. The Hospital Thrift Shop, the older of the two, might be called the grandmother of Nantucket thrift stores because it was founded by and has been largely run during its eightdecade plus history by women, although volunteers there today include men. The other, supporting Family and Children’s Services of Nantucket, has been around only a couple of decades or more and is smaller in size, but its mission also matters greatly to the island.

nantucket HOME 79

Hospital Thrift Shop

BENEFITTING OUR HOSPITAL For 85 years, volunteers have devoted their time to running a thrift shop resale store to help support Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Since it raised a modest $603 after its first year of operation in 1929, the Hospital Thrift Shop has grown in both physical size and business while providing millions of dollars in support to the hospital. Housed in several different rental properties in its early years, the Thrift Shop incorporated in 1945 and shortly thereafter bought the former Ayres house at 17 India Street, where it operates seasonally today. On the three floors of the shop, customers can find furniture, housewares, decorative items and gently used clothing. A special room is set aside for more valuable items including antiques. All items are donated locally. Although the hospital today operates on an annual budget in the tens of millions, the annual donation from the Hospital Thrift Shop has funded renovations in the hospital’s operating room and helped revamp the patient area of the laboratory and the nurses’ station. New equipment purchased with Hospital Thrift Shop donations includes an electrocardiograph machine, an MRI, and additions to the ER.

In November of last year, the Hospital Thrift Shop made a $200,00 donation toward the hospital’s new Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy Associates facility at Freedom Square. Similar to previous years, the Hospital Thrift Shop donation last year also included $24,000 to the hospital’s social services department and a $12,00 contribution to the Marla Lamb Fund, which offsets the costs of transportation for island cancer patients and is administered through Palliative and Supportive Care of Nantucket, located at the hospital. The shop’s popularity can be gauged partly by the long line of customers that snakes down India Street each spring when the shop opens. From mid May through mid October, the shop operates Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The doors are open from 6 p.m.to 8 p.m. on Wednesday nights. Special half-price and free merchandise days help the store close out its season in October. For information on donating goods and complete hours of operation, visit www.nantuckethospital.org or call 508-228-1125. (continued on pg 118)

THIS VIEW WILL NEVER CHANGE

150 years ago the island of Nantucket fell from its position as "whaling capital of the world." The Great Fire of 1846 burned much of downtown, oil was discovered on the mainland, and without the benefit of the Jet ties, Nantucket Harbor became too shallow for full whale ships to enter easily. As Nantucketers fell on hard times existing buildings were preserved rather than replaced, helping to protect the character of the island. Fifty years ago the Nantucket Conservation Foundation began its mission of preserving and maintaining the island's natural areas and resources. Together with other conservation organizations, the Foundation's efforts have ensured that half of

Nantucket will remain forever wild. The Windwept Cranberry Bog pictured above is one such protected property. Thanks to the hard work, generosity and forethought of others (and also to the economic woes of the post-whaling era) much of Nantucket remains the same as it was 200 years ago and will remain unchanged for future generations.

The view from this 5 bedroom home only changes with the

Water views and morning light

Doorways to Nature LESLIE LINSLEY Photography by Jon Aron

Most visitors to Nantucket know Madaket as

the area where the island’s landfill and recycling center are located. But if you keep driving to the end of the

road, you find a world far from what you left behind in downtown Nantucket. Nothing much has changed there, as current residents guard the tranquility of this fishing village with a vengeance.

aking up every morning to water views on Nantucket is summertime at its best. And one of the most interesting views is of Hither Creek and Madaket Harbor. All types of boats owned by locals and summer residents create an ongoing bevy of summertime activity— in slow motion. It’s almost dusk. The road to Madaket, the village at the western tip of the island, curves gracefully as it leaves town. Just over a crest, the sky bursts across the horizon in streaks of pink, purple, and fiery yellow as the sun begins its final descent. At every dip and curve of the road the view changes. This is the best place on the island to watch the sunset. Bring a snack and a bottle of wine for a truly romantic experience at day’s end. Back in the early 1600s, there were nine “first purchas-

ers” of the island of Nantucket. In the fall of 1659, Thomas Macy and his wife were the first to arrive. They chose to settle in Madaket. However, while Madaket, which means “sandy soil” was a fine area for fishing, it proved too harsh for planting. The following year, 60 settlers moved inland between Capaum and Hummock Pond. In the beginning, the island’s Native American Indians taught the whites how to hunt whales. The settlers built shacks and then houses near the shore. Madaket is still known as a fishing village, and residents have bought houses there to vacation and take advantage of the fishing and boating in Madaket Harbor and Hither Creek. In the winter, the harbor is filled with boats owned by local residents, including many who scallop for a living.

This house on the creek was a plain nondescript structure, undistinguished and run down back in the early 90s This house on the creek was a plain and nondescript structure, undistinguished and run down back in the early 90s when friends of mine bought it. He had grown up in Madaket, but it wasn’t the house that interested them so much as the fact that it was situated right on Hither Creek. They couldn’t imagine anything better than having those views, seen from every window of the house, being the first and last sights of the day. The change of seasons would change that view, providing ongoing enjoyment. From years of experience in renovation of old houses, the couple knew that with a little imagination they could turn a tired, outmoded house into a waterfront gem. As a young boy, the owner learned to sail and fish in these waters. After retiring from teaching offisland, he came back to Nantucket looking for a project. So it was with a sense of the place that the couple set out to capture the spirit of old Madaket when they found this house to renovate. “I knew that once we gutted the place we could make it look like the old lifesaving sta( Continued pg 138 )

Habitat

for Humanity ® Nantucket

Fourth Annual Lemonade Event Look for a lemonade stand on Saturday, August 2nd and quench your thirst. It won’t be difficult to find one. Habitat has again invited families to participate in its annual island-wide “Make a Stand” event that day to help them learn about community service and Habitat’s work on Nantucket. On that day expect to find lemonade stands on corners, parking lots and bike paths around the island. Habitat will provide banners, lemonade, T-shirts, recipes and trash receptacles that will be distributed to participating families the week prior to the event. Participating families are invited to attend a picnic supper that evening provided by Jim and Sheri Perelman, ACKBBQ.

“Last year 25 lemonade stands were open, operated by more than 30 families, who persevered through rainy weather ,” said Lou Gennaro, current President of the Nantucket Habitat affiliate. “There are many misconceptions about Habitat and its work on Nantucket, and this is an opportunity to engage the community to learn more about us. Many parents with young children have asked “how can we get involved?” This event is a response to that question, and is our fourth consecutive year for this family endeavor. “We build houses, but helping to build stronger families is a vital part of what results from home ownership,” said Terry Anne Vigil, Habitat Nantucket’s chairperson for Family Support.

Participate Families wanting to “Make a Stand” and to participate in this year’s event should call (518) 461-9805, or see Habitatnantucket.org for details.

Habitat Nantucket was founded in 2001 by members of the First Congregational Church on Nantucket and is one of more than 1,500 affiliates building in the United States. Since that time, more than three hundred volunteers have completed 5 homes, working side by side with Habitat families to help them achieve a brighter future. Home number six is under construction in Surfside. Habitat homes are not hand-outs: families invest upwards of 350 hours in building their own home, and their ownership is secured with a mortgage. Individuals and groups interested in participating in the building are encouraged to call 508/325-8912.

The Seconds Shop

(continued from pg 80) HELP FOR FAMILY SERVICES Family and Children’s Services of Nantucket provides a broad range of mental health services for children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families who have experienced stress and conflict in their lives. Programs and staff address problems such as anxiety, depression and bi-polar disorder, relationship and family issues, job stress, and many other life crises and transitions, with a team of social workers, counselors, psychologists and psychiatrists who provide individual psychotherapy, psychiatric services and substance abuse treatment. Family and Children’s Services of Nantucket was founded in 1962 after concerned members of the Nantucket community realized the critical need for such an organization to help and support local children and families. The agency says it has since broadened its reach to a wider clientele that includes individuals and couples as well as the elderly, gay and lesbian community, and transgender persons. It is the

only non-profit mental health agency and counseling center on Nantucket and operates on a 24-hour emergency basis in cooperation with the Nantucket Police Department and Nantucket Cottage Hospital. The agency’s Seconds Shop moved last year to a new store at 32 Sparks Avenue, alongside the new Cumberland Farms store, across the street from the Stop & Shop. The Seconds Shop operates year round, Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Donations are accepted during store hours. Although much smaller than the Hospital Thrift Ship, the single, ground floor space at the Seconds Shop features a similar broad selection of gently used household items, furniture, decorative accessories and books. A dozen ample clothing racks offer linens and clothing for the entire family. For more on the Seconds Shop, call 508-228-667 or visit www.nantucketfamilyservices.org.

In early 2013, a group of Nantucket non-profit leaders launched the Nantucket License Plate Committee, which could result in a special license plate featuring the Nantucket location name and a silhouette of the island. Orders have been going to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation for the $40 special plate since last year. The plate will become reality and go into production by the state only after the first 1,500 applications are received. Until the initial order threshold is reached, MassDOT will hold onto the applications and checks, cashing them only after the initial 1,500-plate goal is reached. According to the project’s website, more than half the necessary orders have been placed. The vehicle that will bear the plate must be registered anywhere in the state of Massachusetts. Out of the $40 cost of the plate, $28 is returned to the organizing group. (An additional $20 plate swap fee is due with a vehicle owner’s first order.) Once the 1,500-plate threshold is reached, the plate will remain in production, continuing to return a portion of each license plate fee to the island. Going forward, at least 25% of the annual share received by the island will go to non-profit organizations that benefit or provide services to children. Community Foundation for Nantucket will receive the monies then distribute them through a donor-advised fund set up for this purpose. The project is the brainchild of Robert Sarkisian, who launched

the effort to benefit Nantucket Lighthouse School, where he is a trustee, and other Nantucket children’s education programs. “I’m excited about this being a perpetual way of giving money to the school and other Nantucket children’s groups,” said Sarkisian. To help make the plate become a reality, the Nantucket License Plate Committee has invited other Nantucket non-profits to join in processing initial applicants in exchange for the $28 portion of the fees during the pre-production phase. Partners in the project so far include Nantucket Booster Club, Small Friends on Nantucket, A Safe Place, First Congregational Church and Nantucket Community Sailing. Nantucket’s real estate professionals have especially promoted the project. Sarkisian is a broker at Island Properties Real Estate. A Nantucket nonprofit group tried the effort several years ago, but it failed to reach the threshold to launch that plate. Sarkisian believes that the tremendous growth in social media since then will help boost this effort to success. One of the plates could appear on the rear of Sarkisian’s own prized antique car, a turquoise and white 1951 Buick Special, which many would recognize as an annual participant in the Nantucket Daffodil Festival Antique Car Parade. “I’d love to have the plate on my cars,” he said. A new website has been launched with the application form on it, along with answers to frequently asked questions including details about fees and the process for putting the plates into production. His knowledge of building and of Nantucket’s history, combined with her background in interior design, proved invaluable as they approached the project with very definite design ideas. Their challenge was to create a house that would complement the area and take advantage of the water views. While the nature of the remodeling was fairly conventional, involving the taking down of walls to create one large room, the results were anything but ordinary. When you walk into the house now, it seems more like you’ve stepped outside it. The double glass doors on the water side of the house and the front windows almost touching the floor are the essence of summertime living. No curtains obstruct the views, which are as important to the rooms as their interior furnishings. Walls are painted perfectly white, and the pickled oak floors are a pale seasoned pink. Through the doors, porches wrap around three sides of the house. While this couple wanted a large front porch, stringent zoning laws prevented this. The owners said, “Sometimes

limitations can be turned into an advantage,” and that’s just what happened. They ended up with a narrow porch running around the house like a passageway on a ship’s deck. It’s quite nautical and anchors the house to the landscape. The interior of the house reflects an association with the water and boating as well. The homeowners filled it with found treasures from many years of travel, mostly in France where they spent part of the year. “We find things in places off the beaten track called brocantes, which means a little better than a secondhand shop and where things are most interesting,” she said. Everything in the house tells a story. Combined with this eclectic mix are nautical collectibles and Nantucket memorabilia. After enjoying the fruits of their labor for many years, the house was sold and the couple retired, once again, to work their magic on their home in France. or more than a decade, no author has researched and written more histories about Nantucket, its people and its neighborhoods than Frances Ruley Karttunen. In nine books and numerous published articles, Karttunen has chronicled such diverse Nantucket topics as ethnic immigrant groups on the island, colorful criminal activity, and the island’s culinary history. (continued from 140) In her latest volume, Karttunen turns her ethnographer’s eye on Nantucket’s “North Shore,” that area north of the current downtown and facing Nantucket Harbor, where the island’s mid-17th-century settlers moved from their initial settlements from as far to the west as Madaket. Bounded by Lily Pond and the gentle hills to the south and east, these are familiar footpaths, streets and homesteads for Karttunen. Her parents lived on the current Kite Hill Lane, and she grew up in a cottage behind her parents’ house at the current 12 Cliff Road. Today, she lives nearby on Centre Street. Her biography notes “her ancestors have lived on the North Shore since English settlers first set foot on Nantucket in the 1600s.” She calls herself “a thorough North Shore girl.” In the pages of “Nantucket’s North Shore: A Neighborhood History,” Karttunen earnestly and in great detail recounts the area’s residents, businesses and their ways of life. Among many historic sites in the area, The Jethro Coffin House, called the “oldest house” on the island, sits atop Sunset Hill. Built probably in the late 1600s, the home is one of few very early Nantucket residences to remain where they were originally built. Today, the Jethro Coffin House— the property is open to the public most of the year—is one of several historic sites owned and maintained by Nantucket Historical Association. Just after the turn of the last century, the island’s vital medical facility Nantucket Cottage Hospital, established in 1911, found its first home in late 1912 on West Chester Street. Many older residents of Nantucket today were born within those walls. Public accommodations in the area included the now gone Sea Cliff Inn, Springfield House, now part of the Harbor House complex, and, later, the Point Breeze Hotel, now The Nantucket Hotel. Nantucket’s high school, first put up as a wooden structure, was built on Academy Hill overlooking the town. It was later rebuilt as a brick structure, which today houses

apartments for elderly residents. The North Church on Centre Street included a vestry moved there from Maxcy’s Pond in the first quarter of the 1700s. Now named First Congregational Church, its adjoining Bennett Hall is home to many productions throughout the year staged by Theatre Workshop of Nantucket. Along North Centre Street closer to town, many businesses sprung up including dry goods and grocery stores, bakeries and restaurants, a blacksmith and a laundry. Today’s American Season’s was originally a grocery store, then it became the popular North Shore Restaurant starting in 1944. The island’s earliest homes for wealthy seasonal residents sprouted along Cliff Road, with the former grazing pastures below to the beach eventually giving way to shoreline homes, resorts and bathing beaches. Especially charming parts of Karttunen’s book are the old time recipes popular with families and food businesses in the area. Some were created from early indigenous plant life—a recipe for sweet flag candy calls for boiling the roots of this wet woodland plant similar to ginger or nutmeg and adding plenty of sugar—while other dishes including “second-day wedding pudding” depend heavily on cow’s milk. Readers of “Nantucket’s North Shore” will get wonderful insight into both the quotidian and special times in the area, through plentiful antique photographs from the extensive collection of Nantucket Historical Association and from local photographer and collector Allen Reinhard. For Karttunen, a former researcher and lecturer on indigenous languages and cultures at the University of Texas, the book is a “labor of love to retrieve and preserve [her home] neighborhood history” before it’s forgotten.
