WELCOME FROM THE DEAN As the new Dean of WMU Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) it is my pleasure to welcome you to WMed’s 10th anniversary live virtual gala! This is the sixth annual gala of the medical school and certainly the most far reaching by participation. This year’s gala has attracted registrations from 25 states across the U.S. and three foreign countries.

This has truly been a landmark year in the history of Kalamazoo’s premier medical school. Like the rest of the world, we have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic both in limiting our activities to reduce the spread of the virus, and in the ways our faculty, residents, students, and staff have been called upon to serve the public health needs of our region. It is because of the limitations of COVID-19 that we have migrated to our live virtual format for this year’s gathering.

Over and above this change in format, this year’s gala marks the tenth anniversary of the founding of WMed. Certainly an anniversary worth celebrating! In addition to celebrating our first decade, we also celebrate the retirement of Founding Dean Hal B. Jenson, MD, MBA. Hal’s decade of innovative leadership has propelled WMed from concept to fully accredited medical school with an innovative curriculum and a growing national reputation.

This year’s gala is also a way for us to invite all the medical school’s stakeholder groups to come together as a community, to not only celebrate WMed through their attendance at WMed Live, but to also financially support the mission of the medical school and champion the next decade of its growth, development, and national reputation. With your help, we have marked the beginning of a new decade of WMed’s service to the nation and raised funds to advance the core mission and medical education programs of our institution. Over the past twelve months our gala planning committee has met monthly to design and deliver an innovative, exciting, and COVID safe gala experience so that all our medical school constituents will be able to celebrate the medical school’s 10th anniversary. It is also a special opportunity to honor our Founding Dean, Hal B. Jenson, MD, MBA, on the occasion of his retirement and to enthusiastically welcome our new Dean, Paula M. Termuhlen, MD. DR. HAL B. JENSON RECOGNITION It’s fitting that one of Dr. Hal B. Jenson’s favorite pastimes is mountain climbing, because his career at WMed has been about striving for and leading the medical school to achieve new heights of success. Dr. Jenson was appointed founding dean in early 2011 and has spearheaded the medical school’s development and outstanding achievements over the past ten years. In addition to being the founding dean, Dr. Jenson is a professor in the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine.

As the founding dean, Dr. Jenson had to overcome new challenges and obstacles every day. Being a visionary leader, he welcomed each challenge and excelled in his execution of each task the medical school accomplished. His attention to detail created a broad foundation for the medical school to continue to grow to meet the healthcare needs of our region and provide the finest of medical education.

We recognize Dr. Jenson at WMed Live for his legacy of leadership and effectiveness as he helped the medical school grow from infancy to adolescence. He has been a staunch advocate for each of WMed’s graduating classes.

Hal, we wish you a long and healthy retirement. We look forward to seeing what mountains you climb in the future.
