Message From The Founding Dean Since March 2011, I have had the honor and privilege of serving as the founding dean of Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed). During this time, we have accomplished significant milestones as a new medical school and focused on operational excellence to become even better.

I hope you share the same sense of accomplishment that I have for the medical school and in what we have created together. After 10 years in this position, I will retire in summer 2021. I look forward to serving as dean emeritus, continuing to support WMed from a new perspective.

As a medical school, WMed exists to educate learners, serve patients in our community, and create new knowledge that makes a difference in the world. Nothing is more important than preserving our mission. Our daily actions and decisions are in service to this mission.

These are extraordinary circumstances and challenging times that none of us have seen before. COVID-19 has profoundly touched every aspect of our lives; however, I am proud that WMed has shown an incredible amount of resilience to meet pressing needs despite a great deal of ambiguity. The willingness of our medical students to contribute wherever possible has been remarkable. The unwavering dedication of our frontline medical professionals to deliver the highest quality patient care in our WMed Health clinics and affiliate hospitals has been inspiring. The active work of our faculty in medical research is innovative and groundbreaking. The collaboration of our students, resident physicians, faculty, and staff, with the community showcases the true spirit of WMed. At WMed, we have an unyielding commitment to lifelong learning, patient care, and discovery. This year proved no different. Through it all, the safety and well-being of WMed and the Southwest Michigan community that we serve remains our top priority as the pandemic crisis continues. What we know to be true is that philanthropic partnerships enhance our power to do good. Your spirit of philanthropy is inspirational and we are grateful to have you as colleagues, advocates, and philanthropic partners.

I am pleased to share the progress that has been made thanks to the generosity of our donors during the 2019-20 fiscal year. Donations to support the mission of the medical school totaled $2,710,070. This outpouring of support for our mission, in the face of unprecedented financial challenges, is truly extraordinary.

WMed Donors: Our Constant in a Period of Challenge and Change It is an honor to serve as the associate dean for Development and Alumni Affairs at WMed. Serving our founding dean during the last two years of his remarkable decade of leadership has been, and continues to be, a high point in my fundraising career. Seeing the growth in WMed’s fundraising program has been exciting and rewarding. This Philanthropy Impact Report showcases the key philanthropic highlights from the 2019-20 fiscal year.

The coronavirus pandemic significantly impacted WMed fundraising this fiscal year. COVID-19 required a shift in our Annual Imagine Gala from an in-person event to a virtual Non-Gala, Gala. Despite the challenges they faced, our event Chairs, William “Bill“ Parfet and his wife Barbara Parfet, were enthusiastic and tireless in their support for the modified Gala and WMed. As the impact of COVID-19 hit Kalamazoo, Bill and Barbara were at the forefront in helping the medical school stay nimble and advocated for continued financial support.

They did not miss a beat in transforming the in-person event to the virtual Non-Gala, Gala. They aligned Gala donations to support The WMed COVID-19 Response Fund, which helped the medical school secure critically needed personal protective equipment and safety resources for our frontline medical team of students, faculty, residents, and staff. Next, Bill and Barbara established a challenge incentive and committed to match one dollar for every three dollars contributed to the Gala and the Response Fund. With the support of their challenge gift, WMed raised over $400,000! I thank Bill and Barbara, and I thank each of you who stepped forward to support these remarkable initiatives. Learn more about the Imagine Gala and The WMed COVID-19 Response Fund on page 13.

Another major innovation this year was the launch of The WMed Fund, a new annual fund established as a primary vehicle for all donors to support the medical school’s core mission. You can learn more about this exciting new giving opportunity to support the medical school and our learners on page 29.

With the help of our donors, medical school senior leaders, and many friends, The Dean’s Circle Leadership Giving Society was created for our loyal supporters to step forward as leaders in advancing our mission and supporting our students. See the article on page 33 to read more about The Dean’s Circle Leadership Giving Society which formally launches in the 2020-21 fiscal year.

2019-20 was without question a year of challenge and change. However, with the steady leadership of our founding dean, a well-positioned strategic plan, and YOU – our loyal donors – we were able to weather this period of transition. As WMed approaches our first decade of operation in 2021, we celebrate the remarkable legacy of accomplishments of our founding Dean Dr. Hal B. Jenson. We are profoundly grateful for the continuing support of our major philanthropists for their unwavering support of WMed. We are enthusiastic about the future, the appointment of our next dean, and the growing reputation of WMed as a medical school of national distinction. L. Lee Stryker’s Legacy of Philanthropy Honored at WMed Not a day passes that Annie Johnston Henn isn’t reminded of the impactful legacy that her late grandfather, L. Lee Stryker, left for his family.

She hears the stories often from her mother, Ronda Stryker, of how L. Lee Stryker passed down to his children the lessons he learned from his father, Dr. Homer Stryker, and mother, ensuring they would not be forgotten.

L. Lee Stryker was president and chief operating officer of Stryker Corporation until 1976, when he and his wife and two companions perished in a plane crash while on vacation in Wyoming. His children, Ronda, Patricia, and Jon, were not on the plane and survived.

“My grandfather’s legacy is to care about all people and to give every person an equal opportunity to succeed,” Johnston Henn said of her grandfather.

“I think he’s probably one of the people who really instilled that idea in me - of philanthropy and giving back, and not just of your assets, but also your time.

That was really important to him.”

The entire Stryker family are, and always have been, very philanthropic. In 2019, Jon Stryker, L. Lee Stryker’s son and Johnston Henn’s uncle, donated $1 million to WMed in honor of his late father, making his total donations to the medical school $6 million.

who gave a $100 million gift to Western Michigan University in 2011 that served as the foundational funding for WMed. Since its opening in 2014, the medical school has welcomed seven classes made up of more than 522 aspiring physicians and celebrated the graduations of three of those classes, most recently the MD Class of 2020 on May 16.

“I’m pleased to add my support to my sister Ronda’s contributions to Western Michigan University and the Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine, and I’m honored to have this space named for our father,” Jon Stryker said.

“I hope all of this inspires students to do a lot of good with their medical degrees and as doctors,” Johnston Henn added. “It’s such an opportunity to give back and give so much. My grandfather also had a really big sense of adventure and I hope students can be creative. I hope they’re inspired to do a lot more for others than for themselves, and to go out and live their lives and live it to the fullest because I think that’s what he did and what he instilled in my family.”

On Thursday, May 9, 2019, Johnston Henn stood in place of her uncle in a special unveiling ceremony of the team-based learning hall on the first floor of the W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus - named in honor of L. Lee Stryker. The ceremony also recognized the generosity of Jon Stryker.

“It means a lot to me to be standing in place of my uncle who is such a philanthropic, generous, and humble man,” Johnston Henn said, following the special ceremony and unveiling.

The Stryker legacy of philanthropy is what helped make the medical school a reality. It was Johnston Henn’s parents, William Johnston and Ronda Stryker,

Lynn & Charles Zhang Donate Much Needed PPE to WMed were all back ordered as the vendors dealt with limited supplies.

Zhang reached out to a friend in the medical field in China, who said she could help find supplies. Zhang spent numerous hours on the phone over several weeks – often late at night due to the 12-hour time difference – sourcing supplies, ordering them, and arranging for delivery to the medical school.

The generous donation of personal protective equipment (PPE) from Charles and Lynn Zhang kept WMed Health providers and staff safe while serving the community.

In April, a generous donation of $150,000 worth of personal protective equipment (PPE) from Charles and Lynn Zhang allowed the medical school to keep its healthcare providers safe while they served the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Zhangs’ generosity also included a significant contribution of their time as Lynn Zhang personally spent countless hours sourcing supplies from China amidst worldwide shortages of PPE. “We really wanted to do something to help,” Lynn Zhang said. “I read the stories about how our frontline doctors and nurses were fighting the pandemic with a lack of equipment and that broke my heart because they were risking their lives and we didn’t have enough protection to give them. I thought, how can we take care of patients in the community?”

Zhang said she called WMed leaders and asked what they needed most. She learned the medical school had placed orders for PPE, but the orders

The Zhangs’ donations to the medical school were just one of many things they did to support Kalamazoo as the community fought the COVID-19 crisis. They made additional donations to the Kalamazoo Community Foundation and donated funds to Bronson Methodist Hospital’s Rapid Response Fund to supply the hospital with more ventilators in the case of a COVID-19 patient surge.

“I believe we’re very blessed to be part of the Kalamazoo community,” Lynn Zhang said. “Our leadership in the medical school and the local hospitals worked together and focused on one goal to make it happen. That is so crucial.”

Donations from the Zhangs included surgical masks, gloves, Tyvek suits, booties, and goggles – PPE that was deemed essential to keep providers safe but had been in short supply everywhere, according to Robin Scott, the medical school’s manager for Occupational Health.

Having an abundance of surgical masks allowed WMed Health to provide them to employees and patients. At the time, the medical school was requiring all employees and visitors to wear surgical masks while on any WMed campus. The donation allowed WMed Health to share surgical masks with Ascension Borgess Hospital and Bronson Methodist Hospital, along with West Michigan Air Care and Kalamazoo Anesthesiology. “Surgical masks protect the air people breathe out, so everyone wearing a mask protects people around them,” Scott said.

The generous donation of PPE from Charles and Lynn Zhang kept WMed Health providers and staff safe while serving the community.

We can all learn from the Zhangs’ community engagement, commitment, compassion for others’ safety, and servant leadership, said Keith Kenter, MD, the medical school’s associate dean for Clinical Affairs.

“WMed and WMed Health are proud to accept these gifts and to be associated with our community,” Dr. Kenter said at the time. “It is in times of stress and crisis management that good things like this

need to be celebrated. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

Due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the medical school has expanded the medical supplies and PPE to better prepare the incoming class and keep them safe during their studies and clinical experiences. As a result, our equipment list has grown and the need for philanthropic donations has increased to keep pace.

Geriatric Psychiatry Endowed Fund Supports Mental Health Initiative in Southwest Michigan Susan Brown has been making strides to expand access to quality mental health services in Southwest Michigan and combat the stigma for those seeking help for mental illness since 2012, when two high-profile community members, and friends of Susan’s, lost their lives to suicide.

Brown’s passion to help those dealing with mental illness recently led to a substantial gift given in her honor to form the WMed Geriatric Psychiatry Endowed Fund. The generous gift was given by John W. and Rosemary Brown, two well-known Kalamazoo philanthropists who are close friends of Susan Brown and her husband, Bob Brown.

John Brown is the former chairman of Stryker Corporation and during his 32 years of leadership, Stryker became a world-renowned medical technologies firm based in Kalamazoo. Rosemary and John Brown have strong philanthropic ties to Kalamazoo and contribute regularly to community organizations as well as WMed. “Susan has played an important role in Kalamazoo and in Michigan with her dedication to many worthy causes and she is deserving of this honor,” Rosemary Brown said. “Susan has a personal connection to this area of medicine, and we want to support her dedication.”

Susan Brown said she has no doubt that the significant gift from her friends will have a “huge impact” and put into action the help to solve what she called “a community problem and a community responsibility.”

The Geriatric Psychiatry Endowed Fund will help Kalamazoo become a model for how communities deliver quality mental health services.

“The generosity of Rosemary and John Brown will pave the way to Kalamazoo becoming a leader in the state and nationally in forging a mental healthcare system that is seamless for the community to access,” Susan Brown said.

Furthermore, the financial support will be critical to launching endowed professorships and fellowships within the Department of Psychiatry at WMed. Rajiv Tandon, MD, chair of the medical school’s Department of Psychiatry, called Susan Brown an inspiration. “This gift allows WMed to take the lead on quality mental health care. One of the challenges in the community is the fact that we need more mental health resources, and we have to improve collaboration and coordination,” Dr. Tandon said.

on specialized populations such as women’s health and geriatric mental health.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited about anything,” Susan Brown said. “When you see the impact that this help gives to people suffering from anxiety and depression, no matter what age, you’re just thrilled. Good health is mental, as well as physical. Primary physicians now are expected to be knowledgeable in both. Kalamazoo has the means to do this — a concerned and well-advised community, a rising medical school, and a chair of Psychiatry who will lead us there.”

For their part, Rosemary Brown said she is hopeful that the gift from John and her will prompt others to support the work being done by Susan Brown and the program steering committee.

“We are hoping to call attention to a need and to encourage other donors to give,” she said.

With Susan’s vision early on, and help from the Kalamazoo Collaborative Care Program’s steering committee, two health clinics have opened in 2018 and 2019, which has led to an overall decrease in depression and anxiety for patients who were enrolled in the primary care clinics’ program.

The program has five main objectives: improving accessibility for more timely mental health services; decreasing the stigma associated with seeking mental health services; closing the gaps in mental health services; improving communication between agencies and providing a community-wide directory for mental health services; and promoting the collaboration of care with primary care practices while also focusing

Reimagined Gala Draws an Outpouring of Support for COVID-19 Response Fund

The COVID-19 pandemic brought rapid and continuous change to the medical school and the community, as well as uncertainty across the U.S. and the globe. As the pandemic began to unfold in March and early April, WMed leaders knew they had to act swiftly and they did so by implementing proactive measures, new policies, and other actions in order to continue operations in the safest manner possible.

The Annual Imagine Gala, which was scheduled for May 16, 2020, had been one of the most prestigious philanthropy events in Kalamazoo for the past four years. More than 350 community leaders and friends of the medical school gathered each year to enjoy an evening of fine dining, dancing, and camaraderie as they raised funds to support the mission of the medical school.

Non-Gala, Gala proceeds went toward the school’s pipeline programs, as in previous years, and to the brand-new WMed COVID-19 Response Fund.

The WMed COVID-19 Response Fund was launched to support the medical school’s frontline workers, students, and community. Initial donations helped with items such as the purchase of medical supplies and personal protective equipment, telehealth equipment, and laptops to enable staff to work remotely from home.

This year, the impact of the pandemic caused special events from coast to coast to be canceled for the safety and well-being of all parties involved.

These extraordinary circumstances forced the 2020 WMed Imagine Gala co-chairs, Bill and Barbara Parfet, to get creative.

The Parfets, alongside other organizers, quickly began reimagining what the 5th Annual Imagine Gala would look like and the event was turned into a Non-Gala, Gala. Organizers knew that until the ability to gather returned, WMed – like all businesses – would have to modify fundraising strategies in the face of the COVID-19 crisis, and thankfully, the initial response was very positive.

Although no physical event took place, WMed donors, corporate partners, and friends were invited to still “show up” and support the mission of WMed. All

Imagine Gala Co-Chair Bill Parfet shared, “The COVID-19 outbreak is a powerful example of just how important it is for us to support the education of future physicians and to provide for the medical well-being of residents in Kalamazoo and Southwest Michigan.”

The creation of the Response Fund spurred Bill and Barbara Parfet to commit $150,000 as a “challenge incentive fund.” That meant all Non-Gala, Gala gifts were matched on a one-to-three basis. For example, a donor who made a $750 tax-deductible gift was recognized by the medical school as a donor at the $1,000 level.

“The Parfets’ matching gift has proven to be especially crucial as we navigate the financial impacts of COVID-19,” said Jack Mosser, PhD, the medical school’s associate dean for Development and Alumni Affairs. “We are very thankful for their generosity.”

“Our constituents truly understand how important

the mission of the medical school is in educating future physicians for our region and in supporting the type of medical research that is being done here,” Mosser said. “It’s been heartwarming to see the response from the community, from our local businesses, and our major donors.”

In Memory of Dr. Helen D. Pratt After graduating high school in 1965, Dr. Pratt attended Western Michigan University and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology and a PhD in Clinical Psychology. She excelled in her field and became a professor at Western Michigan University and the director of Behavioral Pediatrics at WMed.

The Dr. Helen D. Pratt Memorial Fund was established at the medical school after she passed away on April 29, 2020, at the age of 72. Dr. Pratt was known for her love of education, generosity within the Kalamazoo community, and her warm spirit.

Dr. Pratt donned many hats throughout her lifetime, as a professor, a wife, and a mother to five children, and still found the time to serve on numerous local, regional, and national boards. By the end of her career, she had authored more than 200 published articles and book chapters, supervised numerous residents, taught countless classes, and mentored many students at WMed. She was honored to be among the founding faculty of the medical school and retired as professor emerita in the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine after nearly 25 years of service.

White Coat Sponsorship Program Each year, WMed enthusiastically welcomes new students to its degree programs, and the White Coat Sponsorship program is one of the exciting ways for members of the community to have a direct and positive impact on the medical school’s newest students.

The White Coat Sponsorship program offers donors an important and meaningful way to help medical students launch their medical studies and clinical experiences. The sponsorship helps provide each student with their first white coat and medical equipment, including a stethoscope, reflex hammer, tuning fork, personal protective equipment, and a wide array of apparel. Donors are invited to write a personal note of congratulations, which is placed in the pocket of their student’s white coat.

A unique and personal bond often develops between donors and students. For donors, the program is a way to really see the impact they’re having in the lives of our students. For students, being sponsored by a donor provides an affirming and empowering experience at the very beginning of their medical education where the support and encouragement is needed most.

Future White Coat Sponsorship opportunities will feature new leadership levels of giving – classic, bronze, silver, gold, and platinum. Donors who commit to sponsorships at the $1,000 level will also be recognized as a member of The Dean’s Circle Leadership Giving Society. Announcing The Dean’s Circle Leadership Giving Society The Dean’s Circle Leadership Giving Society recognizes a special group of donors who step forward each year as leaders in supporting the mission of the medical school. Members of the Dean’s Circle annually make a gift at one of five leadership giving levels to support the Dean’s vision for the medical school, to provide enhanced educational opportunities for students and medical residents, and to advance the overall mission of WMed. Financial support from The Dean’s Circle members provides enhanced educational opportunities for medical students and residents that otherwise would not be possible.
