Dean Paula M. Termuhlen, MD, FACS On behalf of the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed) Board of Directors, I want to introduce you to our new dean and professor of surgery Paula M. Termuhlen, MD, FACS, who joined us on May 1, 2021.

Dr. Termuhlen is a graduate of Saint Louis University School of Medicine and completed her general surgery training at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, and a surgical oncology fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Prior to joining us, she was regional dean for the Duluth Campus at the University of Minnesota Medical School, serving more than 130 students in their first two years of medical school and 50 faculty educators and scientists in the mission of training physicians to serve rural and Native American communities. She has served as a general surgery residency program director at Wright State University and the Medical College of Wisconsin.

She was the vice chair of the Department of Surgery at Wright State University. While at the Medical College of Wisconsin, she led the development team for the creation of two new regional campuses in Green Bay and central Wisconsin. She was also on faculty at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Widely published in surgical oncology and surgical education, Dr. Termuhlen is a past president of the Association of Program Directors in Surgery and an inaugural member of the Academy of Master Surgeon Educators. She is founding editor-in-chief of the Journal of Regional Medical Campuses, and has served in a variety of roles for the American College of Surgeons, Association of American Medical Colleges, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, and the National Board of Medical Examiners.

Message from the Dean The Season of Gratitude

November, the month in which we celebrate Thanksgiving, is symbolically the perfect time of year for the medical school’s philanthropy impact report to be published.

This report highlights and celebrates you – the donors who have generously supported the mission of the medical school. At the sixmonth mark in my tenure as WMed’s new dean, I am overflowing with gratitude for the many ways the medical school’s constituents are generously donating their time, talents, and financial support to advance our mission and to support our learners.

I am grateful to have been selected to follow Founding Dean Hal B. Jenson, MD, MBA to lead and guide the medical school through its next stage of evolution and national distinction. I am awed by the expertise of the faculty who ensure we are offering the absolute best in medical education, clinical care, and research. I am grateful for the commitment and dedication of the staff who work tirelessly to support our learners and patients. I am inspired by the intelligence, enthusiasm, and commitment of the talented students and residents who are furthering their education and training at WMed. Most of all, I am deeply grateful for everything you, our supporters and advocates, have done and are doing to allow WMed to serve our community, add value to the quality of life in our region, address disparities in healthcare, attract students, faculty, and staff from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine, and inspire our youth to consider careers in healthcare and medicine.

My husband David and I have been overwhelmed by the warm welcome and kindness we have experienced as new members of the Kalamazoo community.

As Midwesterners ourselves, we are accustomed to midwestern hospitality, however, we have never experienced the extent of kindness and the welcoming spirit we have enjoyed in Kalamazoo.

We are thrilled to be a part of such a warm, vibrant, and welcoming community.

I am continuing to focus on listening and learning about the history of WMed and the community we serve. Through our Empowering the Future strategic planning initiative, we are talking to community leaders and organizations to ask and learn how best we can have a positive impact in addressing healthcare equity, to support the activities of our local businesses, and to enhance the value proposition that WMed brings to Southwest Michigan. While I have only been here a short while, it is clear to me that Kalamazoo is a great place to live, work, and raise a family.

As our tenth anniversary draws to a close, there is much to be thankful for. We are honored by the philanthropic commitment our Empowering Futures donors have made to support the medical school during the next decade. I look forward to continuing to update you on the activities and opportunities this landmark gift will make possible for the medical school and our community.

This philanthropy impact report tells the amazing story of what you, our donors, have accomplished in supporting the mission of WMed over this past year. Thank you for your generous financial support. Stewarding these precious resources is a top priority. Medical School Goes National for 10th Anniversary Celebration More Than 500 People Across 26 States Joined the WMed Virtual Gala

Under the innovative leadership of WMed benefactors and gala co-chairs William Johnston and Ronda Stryker and William and Barbara Parfet, WMed celebrated its 10th anniversary with a national audience on May 27, 2021.

WMed alumni, parents, faculty, staff, students, retirees, community friends, corporate partners, foundation funders, and medical education leaders from across the nation gathered virtually to celebrate this milestone at the WMed Live First Decade Celebration.

This remarkably innovative event combined live presentations with pre-recorded performances and remarks from an all-star lineup of celebrity talent and national medical education leaders.

Celebrity appearances included a special musical performance by smooth jazz great Kenny G. Additional greetings were received from Grammy award-winning singer Paula Abdul, Emmy awardwinning TV personality Tom Bergeron, R & B artist Ne-Yo, and country western singer TG Shepard.

“Last year we turned our gala into an urgent campaign to raise funds to fight the pandemic and meet community and student needs when COVID-19 brought so many things to a halt across the country,” gala co-chairs Bill and Barbara Parfet said. “This year, while still facing restrictions, we were challenged to develop innovative solutions to gather WMed stakeholder groups to celebrate WMed’s first 10 years, give our departing dean a great send off, welcome our new dean, and raise funds to support the mission of the medical school.”

A special keynote address was delivered during the celebration by David J. Skorton, MD, president of the Association of American Medical Colleges, who put WMed’s accomplishments into context on the occasion of the medical school’s anniversary.

“Starting a new medical school requires vision, inspiration, careful planning, and a leap of faith,” Dr. Skorton said. “A decade feels like a short time because you have accomplished so WMU HOMER STRYKER M.D. SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

much so quickly. In this blink of an eye in terms of the life of a medical school, you have built a solid foundation for a positive trajectory for the upcoming decades. At the pace you are going, I can’t help but think what’s next.”

“As Nelson Mandela said: ‘Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world,’” Dr. Skorton added.

“That is especially true when I see the intentional efforts WMed has undertaken around diversity, equity, and inclusion. I can’t underscore enough the importance of what you are doing and why racism is indeed a public health issue that WMed and all of academic medicine must take on. Longstanding discrimination against all marginalized communities has created dramatic health inequities in this country. Ultimately, racism and poverty influence the social determinants

of health affecting quite literally who in this country survives and who suffers, and now is our time to act.”

Dr. Skorton’s sentiments were underscored by the WMed benefactors and gala co-hosts Bill Johnston and Ronda Stryker.

“Being strong advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education, we felt it was important to champion the importance of raising funds to address disparities in our nation’s healthcare system and to support the next generation of physicians,” Bill Johnston said.

“One of the things I know for sure is my grandfather and dad would be so proud to know what WMed has done and is currently doing to increase the diversity of the next generation of physicians in our region and across the country,” Ronda Stryker said.

including the naming of the medical school’s deanship, WMed’s research floors, and the Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences degree program.

“Financial aid here was huge – it actually made my decision for me,” third-year medical student Raechel Warchock said.

A milestone gift announced at the virtual gala was made by Jon Stryker and Slobodan Randjelović who committed $5 million to establish new current use and endowed scholarships to expand the diversity of the medical school student body by increasing the number of students underrepresented in the field of medicine to earn their Masters of Science and MD degrees at WMed. In total, the gala generated $5.8 million for scholarships, expanded educational opportunities for students, and support for the core mission of the medical school.

Rosemary Vergara, a 2021 graduate of the medical school’s Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences degree program, said, “If you want students who add to the diversity of our educational community, it is important to make sure they’re OK once they get here, and scholarships make that a possibility.”

A key element of the anniversary celebration focused on medical students, who thanked sponsors, shared some of their experiences as community volunteers, and showcased their artistic talents.

Other special congratulatory messages were delivered by Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, and Francis Collins, MD, director of the National Institutes of Health.

The main program, introduced by WMed Board Chairman and WMU President Edward Montgomery, began with a video montage summarizing the growth of WMed. Board members Bill Manns, president and CEO of Bronson Healthcare, and Peter Bergmann, president and CEO of Ascension Borgess, announced several special gifts in honor of Founding Dean Hal B. Jenson, MD, MBA, 6

“This is a special day in the life of WMed, formally beginning our next decade, in which we will continue our accomplishments and build on the successes achieved under Dean Jenson’s leadership,” she said. “Each of the gifts made as a part of our anniversary celebration will support the mission of the medical school, greatly enhance our diversity and inclusion programs, and significantly expand educational opportunities for all WMed students.”

Bidding Farewell to Founding Dean Hal B. Jenson, MD, MBA WMed owes a debt of gratitude for the past ten years of leadership by Founding Dean Dr. Hal B. Jenson, who led the work to create the strong foundation the school enjoys today.

In the company of friends, family, and colleagues, we said farewell to Dr. Jenson on May 27, 2021 at the WMed virtual gala, acknowledging the medical school successes that were achieved under his leadership as founding dean.

Medical school employees shared the following message with Dr. Jenson upon his departure.

“It is one thing to be a boss, another to be a mentor, and a completely different thing to be a leader. We are proud to have been led by a boss, mentor, and leader like you. Thank you, Dr. Jenson. Retirement is not the end of the road, it is the beginning of the open highway.”

The Empowering Futures Gift

A $300 Million Dollar Philanthropic Investment in the Future of WMed One of the most memorable moments in 2021, a year marked by all manner of restrictions due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, was the announcement that anonymous donors would be making a ten-year philanthropic investment in WMed totaling $300 million.

The donation, now named the “Empowering Futures Gift,” was announced on June 8, 2021,

by Dr. Edward Montgomery, WMU President and Chairman of the WMed Board of Directors.

“This remarkable gift spotlights the belief of these anonymous donors that inclusive education empowers people and communities to create a brighter future for all,” said Montgomery.

The announcement of the gift to the medical school was shared nationally as part of a larger gift commitment to WMU totaling $550 million, which became the largest gift

made to a public institution of higher education in U.S. history. In addition to the $300 million coming to the medical school, the gift will also provide $200 million for WMU, and $50 million for WMU Athletics.

“The Empowering Futures Gift to the medical school will absolutely change the trajectory of WMed,” said Dean Paula M. Termuhlen, MD. “This remarkable decade-long financial commitment will position us to become a national leader among medical schools.”

Preliminary designations for the Empowering Futures Gift to the medical school will include: ♦ Scholarships to increase the number of students from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine; ♦ Expanding the percentage of students who receive full scholarships;

♦ Building the sustaining endowment of the medical school; ♦ Developing innovative approaches to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in medical education; and ♦ Fostering innovation, collaboration, and discovery in basic science, clinical science, and community-based research.

Jack Mosser, PhD, the medical school’s associate dean for Development and Alumni Affairs, shared, “This gift is both breathtaking in its scope and truly transformative in what it will allow WMed to achieve over the next decade.”

Dr. Termuhlen added, “The resources this gift provides will allow WMed to make significant strides to carry out our mission to educate exemplary physicians. Investing in the next generation of doctors and diversifying the ranks of our profession are essential to the future of healthcare in our country. With this gift we will create a physician workforce that reflects the populations we serve. That means building diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice into our medical school, not just with our students but with our faculty, residents, and staff.”

“Empowering futures aptly describes not only the impact this gift will have on our medical students, but also highlights the momentum it is creating with our other medical school

donors,” shared Jack Mosser. “We are thrilled by the expressions of interest that are coming from other donors who also want to help WMed achieve its goals of national prominence in diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, scholarship support, student success programs, community-based programming, and research.”

“The community should be excited to know we are going to be great stewards of this gift. WMed will create an inspirational and aspirational vision around health equity and take our young school and really do something transformational,” Dr. Termuhlen said. “We expect to be held accountable by not just our benefactors, but also our community to do this work at a high level and be responsible for the stewardship around this gift.”

During the press conference, Dr. Montgomery said, “This is a striking vote of confidence in the leadership and strategic direction of our medical school and in Western Michigan University as a whole. These donors believe, as we do, that education is one of the primary anchors that strengthen a community, and investing in medical education and higher education in general, is crucial to opening the door to students who might not otherwise be given the chance.”

Make Historic Gift to Expand Educational Opportunity for Students Underrepresented in Medicine Philanthropist Jon L. Stryker, president and founder of the Arcus Foundation, and his husband, Slobodan Randjelović, an architect, designer, and photographer, have established a $5 million gift plan for WMed designed to create an immediate impact in Slobodan Randjelović (left) expanding scholarship and Jon L. Stryker support for students underrepresented in the field of medicine.

“We believe this gift will provide a stream of resources that will allow WMed to immediately increase the number of medical students that they can serve,” said Jon Stryker. “We hope it will also play a special role in increasing the number of medical doctors of color all across America.”

The first installment of this landmark gift, received in June, is providing full scholarship support to students in the Hal B. Jenson M.D. Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences (MBS) degree program. The nine-month MBS program prepares students for health sciences careers or admission to the school’s MD program. This endowed program will provide enhanced access and opportunity for students from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine.

“We are deeply grateful for the vision, leadership, and generosity of these benefactors,” said Dean Paula Termuhlen, MD. “Their investment for both current use and endowed scholarship programs will provide significantly increased access and educational opportunities for WMed learners for decades to come.”

A staunch supporter of WMed, named for his grandfather Homer Stryker, Jon Stryker has also supported a wide array of educational projects at the medical school, including the team-based learning hall on the first floor of the W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus, named in honor of his father, L. Lee Stryker.

“Jon and Slo’s philanthropy is historic in its scale and scope for diversity initiatives nationwide,” said Jack Mosser, associate dean for Development and Alumni Affairs. “Their bold leadership and generous support are playing a pivotal role in accelerating our ability to create high impact programs that reframe the approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in medical education. “In addition to strengthening students’ knowledge in the biomedical sciences, our MBS program also introduces the academic rigor and WMed culture of success that helps them hit the ground running when they start a career or matriculate into our next medical school class,” said Timothy Garrow, PhD, director of the MBS degree program. ”We are committed to contributing to a more diverse physician workforce, and we have chosen this moment to help WMed as a show of support for my sister Ronda and her husband Bill,” Jon Stryker said, referencing Ronda Stryker and Bill

Celebrating Medical Education in Kalamazoo A Community Success Story WMed celebrated its 10th anniversary this year. The celebration highlighted the collaborative partnerships that have developed with the community of Kalamazoo and our many friends across Southwest Michigan.

In a world where it is often hard to build consensus, where competition often limits collaboration, the medical school has benefited from a remarkable level of support from all of our stakeholders. As a communitybased medical school, WMed has benefitted from an inspiring level of leadership from our three collaborators – Western Michigan University, Ascension Borgess, and Bronson Healthcare – along with our community friends, regional businesses, and local foundations.

The medical school’s annual gala, held on May 27, 2021, rallied more than 500 participants from 26 states to support the students and the mission of the medical school, due to its transformation from an in-person event into a live virtual gala to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The impact of the event was also elevated by a generous $5 million gift to establish two new diversity scholarships by philanthropic leaders Jon Stryker and Slobodan Randjelović (see story on page 12).

In total, over $5.8 million was raised through the medical school’s 10th anniversary gala, bringing the total support raised during the 2020-21 fiscal year to over $7 million.

If all these expressions of support were not enough, in the month following the gala, it was announced that anonymous donors would be providing $300 million in new support to the medical school over the next decade as a part of the Empowering

The WMed philanthropy team had the pleasure of working with an engaged group of business, civic and philanthropic leaders throughout this fiscal year. However, special thanks go to Bill Johnston and Ronda Stryker, and Bill and Barbara Parfet, who graciously agreed to chair the tenth anniversary gala. Together, they helped us to understand that great things can be accomplished when the WMed community and the Kalamazoo community work together.

Beyond our achievements as a medical school community, it has been the opportunity of a lifetime for me and the entire WMed philanthropy team to work with so many talented, dedicated and caring people who have made the hard work so personally fulfilling and full of joy.

Tracey “Doc” Doxzon Leaves a Legacy of Learning A good friend of WMed students and faculty, Tracey “Doc” Doxzon, of Kalamazoo, who served many years as a certified teaching associate and standardized patient, passed away March 3, 2021. He was 68. Doxzon had served in the U.S. Navy as a hospital corpsman, received his degree from George Washington University, and was a physician assistant for 32 years.

Students and Residents Collaborate on Street Medicine Initiative The Association of American Medical Colleges charges medical schools to work toward health equity, address public health crises, and train culturally responsive physicians. Engaging with Kalamazoo’s unhoused population delivered experiences on all those fronts for a group of WMed students seeking to meet, assess, and care for them this year.

Launched last winter by Family Medicine Resident Dr. Sravani Alluri, a new street medicine student interest group worked to learn about the needs of people living without permanent housing. Consulting community organizations on gaps they could help fill, the group raised funds for personal protective equipment and medical supplies.

“This model of care takes medical services directly to those without permanent shelter,” said Dr. Alluri, who in January tagged along with a needle exchange program to explore the issue for herself. At the time a third-year resident, she has now joined the WMed faculty as assistant professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine.

“The work is also about building relationships and trust with an often stigmatized population,” she said, adding that patients in the field “were really thankful that someone was coming out and paying attention to them. They felt taken care of a little.”

Part of a multifaceted WMed homeless healthcare initiative, the street medicine group is supervised by Dr. Cheryl Dickson, associate dean for Health Equity and Community Affairs, and Dr. Prashant Patel, assistant professor in the Department of Medicine. The work has included months of multiple weekly visits to downtown Kalamazoo tent encampments, the Gospel Mission, and hotels contracted by local government to provide several months of temporary shelter.

“No one chooses to live on the streets, to be at the fringes of society, but we as a society have forgotten or turned our eyes away from the folks on the streets,” Dr. Patel said.

“We assess and treat a lot of chronic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, skin issues, and injuries,” said Dr. Dickson in July after a busy week of field visits. “There are so many unmet needs, including dental and primary care.”

Reducing barriers so patients can receive primary care is a key goal, as it catches conditions before they are acute, and reduces the number of visits to hospital emergency rooms.

“It might surprise you that much of this population is insured via Medicaid,” said Dr. Alluri. “But their lives are chaotic: they have to figure out food, water, and hygiene every day, so their health issues may not be treated until they WMU HOMER STRYKER M.D. SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

are acute. Some get hospitalized repeatedly – I know of one patient admitted 40 times in six months,” she said, adding that readmissions are costly for hospitals, as they are not reimbursed

Everyone involved is committed to expanding the initiative, incorporating the work into curriculum, adding research into the mix, and making the new model of care financially sustainable.

“I have a vision to offer a multidisciplinary clinic, with a pediatrician, a diabetes specialist, perhaps a cardiologist once a month, where we can see people for services right where they live. That’s the dream – to expand the equity in service delivery,” Dr. Dickson said.

“This program is providing care to some of our community’s most vulnerable individuals, and meeting the changing needs of a neglected population, thanks to our community partners and grant funders who support this important work to bring healthcare directly to where the need is.”

Committed from the beginning to being a community-based and community-serving medical school, WMed commends the students, residents, and faculty leading this work, as does Nancy King, founder of Community Outreach Prevention and Education (COPE) Network, which serves the homeless population locally.

“The WMed team is passionate about their work, and they provide a valuable service in meeting people where they are. Many of these individuals have not received compassionate medical care. This team sees people for who they are, offering true compassion without judgment to those with the least resources,” King said.

Dr. Sravani Alluri Named 2021 Michigan Family Medicine Resident of the Year The Michigan Academy of Family Physicians Board of Directors has named Dr. Sravani Alluri 2021 Michigan Family Medicine Resident of the Year.

"Dr. Alluri is a leader and an innovator who has a passion for public health and community outreach," said Dr. Susan Jevert-Eichorn, an assistant professor in WMed’s Department of Family and Community Medicine.

Artificial Intelligence Technology Makes WMed Nationally Distinctive in Simulation-Based Learning Simulated Encounter

A significant portion of every medical student’s training at WMed involves hands-on practice with patient communication, patient diagnosis, and development of patient treatment plans using simulation-based learning. This vital component of WMed’s curriculum got a shot in the arm this year with an allocation from The Dean’s Circle Leadership Giving Society. Gifts from this important group of leadership donors help to fund strategic priorities, like ensuring the WMed curriculum continues to be nationally distinctive by continuing to incorporate cuttingedge technology into degree programs.

The 25,000 square-foot WMed Simulation Center on the W.E. Upjohn M.D. Campus includes a 13-bed virtual hospital with an operating theatre and debriefing rooms, a

12-room clinic, two control rooms, procedure labs, classrooms, an ultrasonography suite, and a virtual endoscopic surgery room.

“There are always needs to develop clinical reasoning and patient communication skills,” said Dr. Michael Busha, associate dean for Educational Affairs. “The impact of COVID-19 this year provided some urgency to identify and embrace creative ways for our students to develop their patient communication, diagnosis, and treatment skills.”

One of those innovations gave students access to virtual patients in a platform created by UK Recourse Medical. This cutting edge patient simulation technology was a breakthrough for WMed’s MD program during the 2020-21 school year that saw reduced in-person

teaching due to COVID-19 restrictions, including suspension of working with “standardized patients” – laypersons hired and trained to portray clinical scenarios and illnesses.

“The goal is to provide more flexibility for independent learning for our MD students and residents,” said Dr. Adam Channell, WMed assistant professor in the Department of Medical Education.

Simulation helps students learn clinical reasoning and decision-making, procedural techniques, communication, and teamwork, allowing intensive practice before real-world implementation. The more opportunities students have to develop skills, the easier the transition into the clinical phase of the curriculum. The clinical phase of the curriculum integrates students into patient care environments along with academic and community physicians. Simulation is also used to complement clinical experiences and assess student and resident development across expected competency domains.

“Our simulation program is part medicine, part technology, and part theatre,” said Dr. Richard L. Lammers, founding assistant dean for Simulation and professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine. “Simulation accelerates learning, helps identify weaknesses and

deficiencies, fills in experience gaps, and allows learners to gain confidence and prepare themselves for patient care.”

Donors contributing to The Dean’s Circle Leadership Giving Society this past year provided WMed with the funding to help support enhanced educational opportunities for all students and made it possible to continually incorporate educational innovation that keep the WMed curriculum nationally distinctive. One of the most important uses of Dean’s Circle gifts is support for the dean’s key priorities that keep WMed at the forefront of medical education.

2020 White Coat Sponsorship Program The White Coat Sponsorship Program is one of the most gratifying ways for friends of WMed to make a direct and positive impact on our newest students at the start of their medical studies.

White Coat Sponsors cover the cost of a student’s first white coat and medical equipment, including a stethoscope, reflex hammer, tuning fork, personal protective equipment, and an array of WMed apparel.

Each year, we enthusiastically welcome a new class in late summer to begin their journey toward earning their MD degrees. In September, sponsors and friends are invited

to share in the White Coat Ceremony for students who receive their inaugural white coat.

Donors are invited to write a personal note of congratulations, which is put in the pocket of their student’s white coat before it is placed on their shoulders during the event.

A unique and personal bond often develops between donors and students. For donors, the program is a way to really see the impact they’re having in the lives of our students.

For students, being sponsored by a donor is a meaningful and personal affirmation at the very beginning of their medical education – when support and encouragement are needed most.
