WMDDS Honors Dr. John Vander Kolk By Sarah Lennan Masterson, DDS, MS Grandville WMDDS President

The WMDDS is pleased to honor Dr. Vander Kolk this year for the 2022 Silent Bell Award. True to his character, he did not feel deserving of it. He has been patiently waiting for the past two years to receive this award due to COVID-related delays. I first met Dr. Vander Kolk right at the beginning of the pandemic. It was the first day of Michigan’s mandated shutdown for non-essential dentistry. As an endodontist, my office remained open to treat patients with painful oral infections that we didn’t want to escalate to more serious medical emergencies. It was at this time that masks were nowhere to be found and I was in desperate need to remain open. Dr. Vander Kolk, having never met me, drove to my house that very

evening to share his supply with me. I was beyond grateful. As a thank you, I donated some dental supplies and materials for his next mission trip. As much as we wanted to gather for the traditional Silent Bell reception, a rise in COVID cases led us to make the difficult decision to postpone Dr. Vander Kolk’s celebration, and, instead, hold a smaller event on April 21st at the Kent Country Club. Dr. Vander Kolk’s family, closest friends, colleagues, and WMDDS leadership will be in attendance. We thank Dr. Vander Kolk for being such a fine steward to our profession and the dental community at large.

As the editor of the Bulletin, one of my favorite columns in our publication is “Beyond the Chair.” It is always fun to interview dentists and learn about their hobbies outside of dentistry. ADA n Give Kids a Smile, an ADA access-to-care program, turned 20 this year and has helped seven million kids to date! n The ADA advocates for dentists to be included in any decision-making bodies on pandemic preparedness when developing legislation for best practices in response to future public health emergencies. n The ADA urges the National Toxicology Program to review the body of evidence for fluoride before making presumptive hazard statements in forthcoming research reports about fluoride and neurocognitive development. Current draft statements have inconsistent language and data that is not supported by scientific evidence, which could hurt fluoride initiative.

MDA n This year’s Annual Session and House of Delegates will meet in person April 27-30 at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi. n Candidates for elected positions have been vetted and candidate information can be found on the MDA website. n If you would like to run for an office, trustee, or ADA delegate position, you can self-nominate on the House of Delegate floor on Thursday, April 28th. WHAT’S NEW IN WEST MICHIGAN

WMDDS Bulletin Wins ICD/AADEJ Award The WMDDS Bulletin has received recognition from the International College of Dentists and American Association of Dental Editors and Journalists for the second year in a row. The Editorial Policies Committee highlighted personal stories and experiences from leaders, such as former ADA president, Dr. Gehani, former MDA presidents, Drs. Gingrich and Meraw, and Dean Laurie McCauley of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, during the COVID pandemic. The article highlighted their honest responses about how the COVID pandemic impacted their organizations, careers, and patient care. Thank you to

our leaders for their willingness to participate in the interviews that led to the creation of this award-winning article. Dr. Sinacola accepted the award on behalf of the committee at the virtual award ceremony in February 2022. The Bulletin was not the only component of the Michigan Dental Association to be recognized: Dr. Michelle Dzuirgot, Editor of the Macomb County publication, also accepted an award on behalf of their publication.

The ability to represent our community and colleagues during discussions of current events and policy writing, which directly affects our practice and autonomy. We affect change through our participation, so it is my goal that any changes are positive for all of us.

What motivated you to get involved in organized dentistry? As care providers, community leaders, and business owners, we take on a large responsibility. Graham Greenland, DDS, MS, earned his dental degree from the University of Detroit Mercy-School of Dentistry and his MS in Biomedical Sciences & Advanced Prosthodontics/ Dental Oncology from the Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education. When not practicing dentistry, Dr. Palaszek enjoys photography, repairing fountain pens and collecting fountain pen inks, and building PCs for friends and family.

John K. Vander Kolk, DDS A Role Model for Service Aside from all the fun and activities John participated in, he also worked. His strong work ethic is apparent as he held a wide variety of jobs. He began his first job at age twelve as a blueberry picker and salesman. Other jobs included working in sales for a hardware and lumber store, working as a camp counselor in Montana, a landscaper, and a restaurant manager. John cites two individuals as role models. The first is Ken Thomasma, a teacher, outdoorsman, writer, and adventurer. The second is his father as a man of faith who loved God, people, and his work. The apple has not fallen far from that tree. The West Michigan District Dental Society’s highest award is the Distinguished Service Award. This award, also known as the “Silent Bell,” is given to recognize contributions to organized dentistry. These contributions include service to dental professionals, patients, and the community. Dr. John K. Vander Kolk is this year’s Silent Bell recipient. John was born at Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the middle son of Dr. Anno Vander Kolk and Claire Monsma. John and his brothers Craig and David grew up in Grand Rapids. His father was a practicing dentist, and his mother was a teacher, professional singer, interior designer, and real estate agent. Their house was full of love and music. John vividly remembers how his father loved dentistry and how his mother sang in church. Family and faith defined John’s life as he grew up. The Golden Rule was at the core of lessons passed on to John from his parents. As a child, John’s life was full of activities. John describes his childhood interests as “everything water,” which included boating, swimming, surfing, sailing, and lifeguarding. John wasn’t just a water lover. He enjoyed just about any outdoor activity: hiking, backpacking, camping, and mountain climbing. 10

As a young undergraduate, John attended Hope College for four years. He sang in the touring choir, carrying on his mother’s love of musical performance. John’s dental school years followed his time at Hope. He was awarded his DDS degree from the University of Michigan. John met Rosemary (Rosa) D’Agostino at Mott Children’s Hospital. He was doing a mini-residency in anesthesia, and Rosa was working as a surgical scrub. Their first several meetings were during surgeries. John describes those moments where all the two could see of their future spouses were “each others’ eyes.” On January 3rd, 1986, they were married during a small ceremony with only parents and siblings in attendance. As newlyweds, John and Rosa both worked for the University of Michigan. John was an instructor in the dental school, and Rosa worked in the hospital. It is very revealing of their close relationship that John describes Rosa in the most glowing of terms, “admiring the spirit of God in her.” Their first home was in Alger Heights. This home was across the street from where John’s parents lived when he was born. John and WEST MICHIGAN DISTRICT DENTAL SOCIETY | WINTER ISSUE 2022

Rosa are blessed with four children: Patrick, Anthony, Nick, and Gina. They also have three daughters-inlaw, Mallory, Sherri, and Anneri, married in respective order to their sons. Four additional family blessings are their grandchildren, Luka, Elias, Kai, and Roan. John readily shares multiple events have had a hand in shaping John’s family life. The faith journey the Vander Kolks have been on is a cornerstone of their family life. They enjoy travelling to do international mission work. The mission work continues today. They have also disconnected from cable TV. No television has been part of their lives for the past 25 years. Their family time is spent talking, reading, and playing games, strengthening their love and an already strong family bond. John notes that leaving private practice also helped mold his family life. John’s dental career began in Ann Arbor, where he taught in the University of Michigan prosthetics department half time. The other half of his early dental career was spent as an associate dentist: first with Dr. Barbara Weir in Dexter and then with Dr. Kevin Sloan in Ann Arbor. His work consisted of seven-day work-weeks so that he could cover family bills. John and Rosa then moved to Grand Rapids, where he began his solo practice career in a building owned by his father. He practiced next door to his father’s practice in Alger Heights until he outgrew his space. He spent three years practicing in Breton Village until Dr. Tim Gietzen asked him to merge with Drs. Cook, Milanowski, and Gietzen and join them in practice. In 2004, the partners built a new office on Forest Hill. In 2005, John sold his practice to his partners as he and Rosa felt God was leading them on a new path away from private practice. The international experiences they had helped clarify their direction. WEST MICHIGAN DISTRICT DENTAL SOCIETY | WINTER ISSUE 2022

Initially, John and Rosa had planned on moving to North Africa to live and work. That door closed, but another door opened. John was asked by Health Intervention Services to start a dental program dedicated to providing care for people who were falling through the gaps in our social safety net. This meaningful work continued for eight and a half years. In 2014, John began ramping up short-term international work and began working for Michigan Community Dental Clinics. While working in the Big Rapids MCDC, John cared for those patients covered by Medicaid. 2016 brought about another change in John’s dental practice career. He rejoined Partners In Dental Care to care for the patients of a dentist who was leaving. The partners acknowledge and support John’s vision to balance work in Grand Rapids and international service. Faith has led to clarity of purpose for John. He believes that we can make a difference in communities around the world. Making a difference that is immediate, kind, and long-lasting has always been John’s calling. The positive effects of his life work are found not simply in our local community but also in our world community. They exceed dentistry and are found in everyday compassion and service. John Vander Kolk represents the epitome of what the WMDDS Distinguished Service Award is all about. His dedication to service makes him deserving of the Silent Bell.

West Michigan District Dental Society Welcomes 103 New Life Members At the MDA, ADA, and local levels, life membership is awarded to members who have 30 consecutive years of membership or 40 years total of membership. There are two categories of ADA and MDA life membership: active (working) and retired. Active Life Members are recognized for their continued membership and commitment to organized dentistry. Baron Grutter DDS, Rockford After practicing in Kansas City, Missouri (his wife’s hometown) for ten years, Dr. Grutter and his family have relocated to his hometown of Rockford, Michigan. Dr. Grutter purchased his practice from Dr. David Fischer, whom he admires for being highly detailed and an excellent clinician. Her brothers love their sissy dearly and see her no differently, just as someone to be loved in a different way.

ADA CE Course Explains New Treatment Model for Children The ADA CE Online website is offering a new interactive continuing education course, “Highchair Dental Care: A Revolutionary Practice Model for Infants and Toddlers,” that teaches dental professionals an alternate way to treat children beginning as early as eight months of age, while at the same time providing oral health, dental, and diet education for parents and caregivers.

“The highchair provides the safety and security needed to conduct the proper infant oral exam,” Dr. Booker said. “It affords the infant their first dental examination in a conducive atmosphere that is familiar to them, which a traditional dental chair cannot. Strategies that engage a child's natural inclination to open their mouth to laugh or eat is a part of the course instruction.”

The presenter is pediatric dentist, Dr. Winifred J. Booker, president-elect of the Maryland State Dental Association and past president of the Society of American Indian Dentists and the Maryland Dental Society, a local component of the National Dental Association.

She continued, “By placing the baby in a highchair, they are comfortable and usually willing to open wide for their first oral examination, dental cleaning, and/or fluoride application. This practice model is a childfriendly approach to patient care that works well with most infants.”

In 2014, Booker developed Highchair Dental Care and has incorporated it as the way in which she offers treatment and caregiver guidance for 1- and 2-year-old patients.

One of the insights that Dr. Booker offers is the utilization of a familiar household device that is largely missing from dental settings: the highchair.

Global Leadership Academy Uganda is the youngest country in the world, with 50% of its population under the age of 14 years old. This young population averages 5.8 births per female and many families live in child-headed households. These events, along with an HIV epidemic, claimed the lives of entire older generations, leaving younger generations with little guidance and mentorship. The Leadership Academy, along with development programs and vocational training centers, were designed to serve and train young people (ages 15-30) and community leaders with skills and practices that enable them to become transformative and service-oriented leaders within their community. Our objective is to

Global Dental Programs Currently, there are two (2) dental programs partnered in Russia located in the Kostroma and the Vladimir regions. Dentists at each clinic provide dental care to orphans on a weekly basis two times a week, six hours a day. Youth beneficiaries receive care for chipped and damaged teeth, cavity fillings, and plaque removal. They are also empowered and 24

provide participants with residential leadership training, facilitated by indigenous leaders from other institutions, to empower young people and community leaders in the region. The Leadership Academy course occurs in three phases and over the span of two to three years. On average, close to 100 individuals apply to this well-respected program, of which 40 participants are accepted per quarter. By investing in the Leadership Academy, you equip the youth of Uganda, Ethiopia, and Guatemala as emerging leaders with skills that promote community transformation, stewardship, and active community leadership.
