WEST MICHIGAN DISTRICT DENTAL SOCIETY | SUMMER ISSUE 2022 3 A New Chapter

Editorial Staff

Hi and welcome to my first edition of the Bulletin as editor. My name is Daniel Miller, but please just call me Danny. I am a pediatric dentist who moved to Grand Rapids from the east side of the state back in 2019. I grew up south of Detroit in Allen Park. However, I spent many summers at our family lake house in Trufant. I look forward to continuing to learn all that the west side has to offer.

EDITOR’S LETTER

I first experienced organized dentistry in dental school, and I immediately became heavily involved. Advocacy, in particular, struck a chord with me. My involvement with advocacy has only increased with time and now I am a member of the MDA Council of Government and Insurance Affairs. My goal as editor is to spread my love of advocacy to the members of West Michigan District Dental Society. I want to help make the WMDDS the gold standard of MDA advocacy. Starting with this issue of the Bulletin, I will be adding a new section called “Advocacy Avenue.” This new recurring section will provide regular content on all things advocacy. This issue has a double feature with “Meet the MDA Advocacy Team” and “Grassroots Events 101.” The MDA has many great events, but legislative events may be my favorite.

One of the first dentists I met in West Michigan was the previous editor, Rachel Sinacola. We were lucky enough to meet right before the pandemic started. Rachel asked me to join the Bulletin as a contributing editor and then crossed her fingers that I would stay and take this editor role. I would like to thank her for welcoming me to West Michigan as well as for her outstanding work with the Bulletin. I look forward to continuing to make the Bulletin a standout component publication.

As the editor I am here for you, the reader. Please reach out to me if you have any questions about the content provided in the Bulletin or if you would like to help. I can be reached at wmddsbulletin@gmail.com. I look forward to you reading this and future issues of the Bulletin. Also, if you ever see me in person, please tell me that you enjoy reading the Bulletin.

A Voice for West Michigan

Without our community, becoming isolated in practice would be very easy. When I was beginning my career, people reached out to me just to check in and later to help me get involved. It is important to have colleagues to share our successes and failures with. It increases our collective knowledge and lets us cut loose every once in a while with a good laugh. Continue to build those relationships. They are so valuable! I feel very lucky to be practicing in West Michigan. I’ve had some amazing mentors and made lifelong friends. We have a passionate core group of people who are looking out for our best interests in dentistry. I’m so happy to be sharing dentistry with all of you. Thanks for being such great neighbors.

Interfaith Refugee Dental Program

The committee—Revs. Bill Danaher and Manisha Dostert and Drs. Rouzana Hares, Craig Hanson, and Colette Smiley—are developing a list of general dentists and specialists in West Michigan willing to participate in the Interfaith Refugee Dental Program.

• Provide treatment in their own office, with their team, at a time convenient to them.

• Examine assigned patients and develop treatment plans as they see fit to restore health. This program aims to restore dental health, which helps these new Americans integrate successfully into their new home. Studies have shown that people missing their front teeth find it more difficult to find employment. Treatment that restores dental health and gives these patients back their ability to smile comfortably is encouraged.

Colette Smiley, DDS, Co-Chair of Kent County Oral Health Coalition, Grand Rapids

Addressing this issue earlier this year, Christ Church Cranbrook, the Muslim Unity Center, Delta Dental of Michigan, and the Delta Dental Foundation came together to develop the Interfaith Refugee Dental Program (IRDP). This program supports private practice general dentists and dental specialists so they can donate their services to provide critical and needed dental care not covered by insurance or Medicaid. In what is a natural progression, the IRDP is coming to West Michigan, and the IRDP Steering Committee is appealing to you to help grow this effort.

Comes to West Michigan

If you want to become an IRDP provider or have further questions about the program, please email the committee at interfaithdental@christchurchcranbrook.org or contact WMDDS member Colette Smiley at colettesmiley@gmail.com.

• Understand translators and transportation for the patients will be provided. It is hard to imagine how difficult it must be to be forced to flee for your lives, leave your family and friends behind as well as all your worldly possessions, move to a city and country where you don’t know a soul or speak the language, and be faced with starting over. Refugees’ plight has moved WMDDS to lend help, and we hope you will be moved as well.

West Michigan has a long history of aiding refugees, including welcoming Vietnamese refugees in the 1970s and, more recently, refugees from Afghanistan. The needs of these new Americans are many, from housing to transportation to employment and emotional support. One of their most significant needs is dental care, giving us all a chance to help.

Providers in IRDP: • Agree to take one to four new immigrant patients annually. You let us know if you treat children, as many refugees are part of families who fled.

• Are reimbursed through IRDP’s dental fund. This reimbursement covers staff time and lab fees fairly and reasonably.

“ Present day government is very complex with many competing views and agendas. It is important that we let our voices be heard, but also understand how other perspectives may be different. Usually those with the loudest voices get their way – not always the best policy.”

— Dr. Chris Powell Michigan, she will send an email inviting MDA members in that district to attend. I strongly encourage everyone to attend. No experience in politics is necessary. As an MDA dentist your job is to let the legislator know how they can support you and your patients. Lynn will help prepare you ahead of time with various talking points, and she helps guide the conversation on the day of the event.

— Dr. Brad Dykstra “ You don't have to have any lobbying experience to be an advocate, and forming relationships with lawmakers is beneficial both to you and the profession. It can be intimidating but most of them are eager to learn and to meet constituents.”

Grassroots does not mean gardening. A grassroot event simply means it is local. An MDA grassroot event is a meeting of MDA dentists with their local state representative or senator. These events are key to help inform Michigan legislators to the needs of dentistry. The goal of grassroot events is to drive change from the local level. After speaking with Dr. Williams’ MDDS coordinator and office manager, Chelsea Hull, I knew our membership would love to hear more. Fortunately, they had recently finished up an MDDS case that deserved to be recognized. Dr. Williams takes on one large case at a time—helping to solve complicated cases, sometimes over several years, for patients who would have no other means for that kind of care. His entire team participates, from front desk to hygiene as well as the other doctors in their practice. They are proud to help take care of our underprivileged populations and find great reward in watching the transformations take place. MDDS even has dental labs that partner in donating care with providing doctors.

WEST MICHIGAN DISTRICT DENTAL SOCIETY | SUMMER ISSUE 202214 OUR COMMUNITY

Submitted by Jeffrey Heinz, DDS, MSD Rockford

We’re living in a time where the news we consume is almost exclusively negative. Whether it’s smear campaigns, wars, gun violence, or any of the other numerous stories we consume, it’s depressing. That’s one of the reasons why I enjoy the “Dentists Doing Good” column. I get a chance to showcase people putting good into the world, and this edition is no exception. Michigan Donated Dental Services is a nonprofit program of the MDA that has been offering free dental care for those in need by partnering with local dentists. I connected with April Stopczynski, the manager of MDDS, and she shared with me that one of our own WMDDS members, Dr. Shaun Williams (and his team at Glen Valley Dentistry), have been participating in MDDS for quite a few years so I decided to reach out to see if I could get some information on this dentist doing good!

One such patient that Dr. Williams recently took care of was Julie. Her transformation took several years and does not disappoint! Chelsea described their time with Julie and said “You could see the outward expression of herself change. She became more confident in her smile and more confident in sharing herself. She felt better about herself after each procedure. Her smile was bigger every time we saw her! After we finished her case, Julie changed her hair—and the transformation was complete. We could hardly recognize her! You could tell she held her head higher, and her new confidence was so great to feel in person.”

Dentists Doing Good: Dr. Shaun Williams

Julie described her time with Glen Valley Dentistry and Michigan Donated Dental Services. “Being able to go through the program was a life changing experience. For me to be able to smile again with confidence means so much to me. Dr. Williams was also able to alleviate the pain I had experienced for so long. He was always kind and compassionate at every visit, and the office staff were extremely warm and welcoming. I am filled with gratitude for everything they Checkdid.”out some photos of the process on the following page. Thank you, Dr. Williams and team, for giving us some positivity to report on.

WEST MICHIGAN DISTRICT DENTAL SOCIETY | SUMMER ISSUE 2022 15 OUR COMMUNITY Michigan Donated Dental Services is looking for volunteers across the state, including West Michigan. All patients are vetted by the program and must meet eligibility requirements prior to the program contacting you. The example given is a more involved case than the program’s typical patient. You are free to tell the program coordinators the types of cases you would like to treat and how often you would like to be contacted to consider a new case. The first visit is only a consultation and you can decline a case for any reason. You can also earn free continuing education credits for the care you provide. If you or a colleague have questions or would like to participate with MDDS, please contact April at astop@michigandental.org.

The Holland Free Health Clinic is in need of volunteer health providers for our dental program. Our waiting list for services has grown substantially during the COVID-19 pandemic closure. We are in desperate need of volunteer dental hygienists. As you know, hygienists are essential because they evaluate patient dental concerns, provide prophylaxis, educate patients regarding their oral health, and take x-rays that providers use to evaluate clients. The services hygienists provide help us give more concise care to our clients. We also welcome all other licensed professionals interested in donating their time. Whether it is to provide extractions, restorations, prosthodontics, or to assist— your services are always needed. HFHC is committed to accommodating volunteers’ availability any day and time. This is a great way to serve the community and earn CE credits for professional license renewal. HOW IT WORKS

The Smileloc® is made from nitinol, which is a commonly used material in the medical industry. The unique “memory” characteristics of this alloy initiates reshaping of the Smileloc® when heat is applied. The Smileloc® is delivered in a “locked” position with its eight arms (four inner and four outer) ready for placement on the abutment for final seating of the restoration. When positioned with Smileloc® Seater, the four inner arms of the Smileloc® lock under the top of the abutment while the four outer arms lock the coping of the crown in place.

With the all-new Smileloc® by RODO, the world of implant dentistry has reached a new height. Utilizing a modern workflow, Smileloc® helps both patients and Dentists by delivering the highest quality of treatment outcome with significantly reduced chair time and complications.
