LEAD in WMDDS
Submitted by Daniel Miller, DDS Grand Rapids
The Leadership Exploration And Development Program (LEAD) is unique to the MDA. It is a members-only program dedicated to building personal leadership skills through immersion experiences within organized dentistry. The program is a year long and free to join. A maximum of eight participants are selected per cycle. Participants receive a thorough orientation to aspects of the ADA and MDA networks through a blend of group, team, and individual activities. Participants attend MDA committee meetings, the MDA House of Delegates, a trip to ADA headquarters in Chicago, and more.

The program is one year long because it takes time to develop as a leader. The program is structured so that participants complete short monthly commitments that help them grow over the course of the year. No MDA leadership experience is required. The program is open to all members who are looking to develop their leadership skills. West Michigan has had a large presence in the LEAD program since its inception. The following West Michigan members have participated in LEAD: Drs. Veronica Hamilton, Alexandra Hylen, Brandon Jankowski, Daniel Miller, Rachel Sinacola, Liz White, and Lauryn Vanderhoof. Many of those names can be recognized as prominent leaders in West Michigan and organized dentistry. West Michigan is always in need of new leaders so consider applying for LEAD. “The LEAD program taught me about what the MDA offers dentists and gave me the opportunity to learn about member benefits I didn't know existed. I use them regularly in my practice and my appreciation for the MDA continues to grow. It has increased my motivation to volunteer and serve the organization!”
— Rachel Sinacola, DDS, MS Grandville “The LEAD program is an amazing opportunity to develop your leadership skills and to immerse yourself into organized dentistry. Through LEAD, I gained the skills and the confidence to run for the Board of Trustees. I have enjoyed serving on the Board, where I contribute the perspective of the new dentist, and where I help to make decisions that will impact the future of dentistry and our organization. ”
