It’s the Holiday Season
By Daniel Miller, DDS Grand Rapids WMDDS E ditor
It is the most wonderful time of the year: the holidays. It is this time of year when I get to take a break from the office and spend time with family and friends. At this time of year, I am never home alone and there are parties and festivities all around. Being a dentist brings a unique perspective to this time of year. All of the food and sweets leads to snacking—aka a real dental nightmare before Christmas. As a dentist, my hand skills come in handy both baking in the kitchen and wrapping gifts. My career as a dentist has provided me with a wonderful life. It is at this time of year when I am reminded not be a Scrooge and the importance of giving back.
Charitable organizations are always looking for funds, but especially around Giving Tuesday and the rest of the holiday season. The MDA has two of these organizations and both want you to jump on the polar express giving train. The MDA Foundation has their year end campaign and a place for donations on your MDA dues. Specific to West Michigan is the West Michigan Dental Foundation. Both organizations work to increase access to care as well as provide scholarships. Donations of monetary value as well as time are greatly appreciated by the organizations. The Fall Bulletin specifically highlighted the work of the West Michigan Dental Foundation. Do not be a grinch this season, and scan the QR code to donate to the Michigan Dental Association Foundation.
This issue covers holiday well wishes and looks forward to the next year. Well wishes from county groups and the MDA are on the next few pages. Legislative updates on topics that will continue to affect dentistry in 2023 are the focus of Advocacy Avenue. An article on LEAD will provide opportunities to create future West Michigan leaders in
2023 and beyond. I hope you continue to read the Bulletin and do not simply place it next to your elf on a shelf. In 2023 the Bulletins will continue with some new and exciting content including the launch of a new column titled “Practice Perspectives.” Keep an eye on your mailbox for future issues.
I hope you noticed all my holiday puns and word play. Multiple references are scattered in the above letter. I wish you all a safe and happy holiday season and a happy new year.
smiling, Daniel Miller, DDS WMDDS Bulletin Editor

Holiday Traditions
By Jacob Miller, DDS, MS Grand Rapids WMDDS President
It’s time to put down the handpiece and don your ugly sweaters—the holidays are here! I love this time of year. The holidays bring about some of my favorite traditions, big and small. There is something comforting in traditions, and for many of us, they are a big part of how we celebrate the holidays. There are a few things on my list that have to be checked off every year: watch Christmas Vacation, see the lights and decorations at Frederick Meijer Gardens, make ginger bread houses, ride the Santa train in Marne, and make the family egg nog recipe for our Christmas Eve party. The celebrations aren’t over until we do them all.
Whatever your holiday traditions are, I hope they’re great this year. It’s a perfect time to stop and appreciate the important things and spend time with friends and family. I encourage you to start a new tradition of charitable giving, including a gift to your West Michigan Dental Foundation. As you look forward to this new year, I hope you increase your involvement with the WMDDS. Think of attending one of our many wonderful CE courses, become a delegate, or even volunteer for the Board. I look forward to seeing you at the MDA Annual Session in Grand Rapids. Until then, I wish you and your families a very happy and blessed holiday season, and a fantastic New Year. Cheers!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dr. David Landwehr is a Wisconsin native. He earned his DDS at the University of Minnesota. He received an MS degree and a certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at The Ohio State University followed by specialty training in endodontics at the University of Michigan. Dr. Landwehr has been a private practice clinician for more than twenty years and for the last six years has provided exemplary patient care at Capital Endodontics in Madison, WI. Though his daily work focuses on endodontics, his dual certification makes him especially qualified to diagnose pathologies unrelated to the dental pulp. Dr. Landwehr’s ongoing work as an educator and opinion leader has positioned him at the forefront of modern endodontic treatment. He has lectured and presented case studi es both nationally and internationally.
Removal of bacteria from the root canal system is the ultimate goal of endodontic success. Prior to root canal treatment, the pathway to endodontic diagnosis may be filled with twists and turns that prevent the clinician from making a definitive and accurate diagnosis. Following diagnosis, it is imperative that all canals are located and instrumented to the root apex to achieve maximum disinfection. This session will place special emphasis on locating the hard-to-find canals prior to using a rotary instrument in order to establish a predictable and reproducible glide path to the root apex. An evidencebased review of cutting-edge instrumentation options will be presented with special emphasis on different instrument designs and mechanical movements. Lastly, enhanced irrigation protocols will be explored along with state-of-the-art obturation techniques.

LEAD in WMDDS
Submitted by Daniel Miller, DDS Grand Rapids
The Leadership Exploration And Development Program (LEAD) is unique to the MDA. It is a members-only program dedicated to building personal leadership skills through immersion experiences within organized dentistry. The program is a year long and free to join. A maximum of eight participants are selected per cycle. Participants receive a thorough orientation to aspects of the ADA and MDA networks through a blend of group, team, and individual activities. Participants attend MDA committee meetings, the MDA House of Delegates, a trip to ADA headquarters in Chicago, and more.
The program is one year long because it takes time to develop as a leader. The program is structured so that participants complete short monthly commitments that help them grow over the course of the year. No MDA leadership experience is required. The program is open to all members who are looking to develop their leadership skills.
West Michigan has had a large presence in the LEAD program since its inception. The following West Michigan members have participated in LEAD: Drs. Veronica Hamilton, Alexandra Hylen, Brandon Jankowski, Daniel Miller, Rachel Sinacola, Liz White, and Lauryn Vanderhoof. Many of those names can be recognized as prominent leaders in West Michigan and organized dentistry. West Michigan is always in need of new leaders so consider applying for LEAD. For more information contact Angie Kanazeh (akanazeh@michigandental.org)
“
The LEAD program taught me about what the MDA offers dentists and gave me the opportunity to learn about member benefits I didn't know existed. I use them regularly in my practice and my appreciation for the MDA continues to grow. It has increased my motivation to volunteer and serve the organization!”
— Rachel Sinacola, DDS, MS Grandville
“
The LEAD program is an amazing opportunity to develop your leadership skills and to immerse yourself into organized dentistry. Through LEAD, I gained the skills and the confidence to run for the Board of Trustees. I have enjoyed serving on the Board, where I contribute the perspective of the new dentist, and where I help to make decisions that will impact the future of dentistry and our organization. ”

KCDS 2022-23 Hybrid Learning Year
On November 9th, 2022, the Kent County Dental Society hosted the first of three seminars on the 2022–23 schedule at Watermark Country Club. It’s been over two years since our membership has been able to meet in-person. The sixty persons in attendance for dinner that evening also enjoyed a lecture given by West Michigan’s own Dr. Graham Greenland, who spoke about “New Considerations in Maxillofacial Reconstruction.”
Kent County Dental Society President Dr. Rachel Sinacola welcomed the group and also recognized the past two presidents of KCDS, Drs. Brandon Jankwoski and Patrick Condit, and thanked them for their service and leadership on the Kent County Dental Society Board.
On January 25th, 2023, as part of our hybrid learning year, KCDS is hosting its second seminar via Zoom. The lecture entitled “Pathology in Your Practice: When Biopsies are Recommended” will be given by Dr. Theodora Danciu, who is a professor at University of Michigan’s department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine. E-mail reminders will be sent out prior to the meeting, and RSVP’s should also be done online to confirm your attendance.

Join Us at the New Dentist Forum
The New Dentist Forum is in full swing this year following the Kickoff Event at Founders in August. The Forum met September 15th at Stonewater Country Club, where Dr. Brent Medema lectured on “Advances in Endodontic Microsurgery.” The most recent meeting was November 3rd at New Holland Brewing–The Knickerbocker, where Dr. Daniel Miller lectured on “Pediatric Dentistry for the New Dentist: Secrets of a Child Whisperer.” Both events were well attended.
The Forum regularly hosts free CE for new dentist members. At the Forum, time is allowed for networking before and after the CE. Food and beverages are also provided for attendees. Feedback for the recent events has been overwhelmingly positive.
The next New Dentist Forum will be held on January 19th. Further information on the event, including how to RSVP, will be sent by email.

What Is an Action Alert?
By Daniel Miller, DDS Grand Rapids WMDDS E ditor
The Bulletin has printed the QR code for Action Alerts in recent issues. But what exactly is an Action Alert, and why should a member care? Simply put, the Action Alert is the fastest way for members to take control of their profession and advocate for dental health and dentistry. MDA staff work daily to keep an a pulse on legislation that affects dentistry. When an issue rises that requires action, the MDA staff sends out an Action Alert. The alerts are needed because these important issues require more than just the words of our skilled MDA staff. The legislators need to hear from their constituents, and the Action Alert gives dentists that opportunity.
A legislator’s job is to act on behalf of their constituents. However, before they act, they must first hear from their constituents. Legislators respond to volume. One person sending an email is not as compelling as their office being flooded by hundreds or thousands of emails on an issue. When MDA staff goes into a meeting with a legislator, it is most impactful if the legislator has already been flooded with dentist emails on the issue. The MDA has 5,996 members, which would make for a very impactful meeting if everyone responded.
An Action Alert allows dentists to speak directly to their representatives. The MDA staff creates a email complete with all the important talking points. With a few clicks, that email will be sent on behalf of the dentist to all the appropriate representatives. This process does not require dentists to know who their state representatives are. The system automatically fills in the appropriate representatives’ names and contact information based on the dentist’s address. Signing up for Action Alerts takes just a minute. The dentist simply enters their name and address and the system does the rest. No passwords or login are required. The system will send the dentist an alert whenever the MDA has important legislation news to share.
Signing up alone is not enough. The dentist must respond when the alerts come. Earlier this year, after the Michigan state budget proposal included increased dental funding, a total of 20,149 email and text Action Alerts were sent about the Medicaid budget proposal. In the end, only 459 users of any type took action and 37 users unsubscribed from the alerts. MDA members report frequently that advocacy and reimbursement are top priorities. The state budget process was the largest opportunity to improve Medicaid, including the Healthy Michigan Plan dental coverage for procedures and reimbursement. Even though the Action Alert response rate was lower than hoped, funding was ultimately added to the Michigan budget.
Member involvement with Action Alerts is paramount to the future of the profession, so sign up today.

2022 Election Updates
By Neema Katibai, JD Manager of Government and Insurance Affairs nkatibai@michigandental.org
Michigan Proposal 1
Proposal 1 was passed in the November 2022 election with nearly 2/3 of voters supporting the measure to amend the State Constitution. Specifically, Proposal 1 would reduce the total amount of time that a lawmaker could serve as a legislator from 14 years to 12 years and allow them to serve the full tenure in one chamber. It also requires all state lawmakers, the Governor, the Attorney General, and the Secretary of State to disclose certain financial information, such as their assets, all sources of income, outstanding liabilities, payments and gifts from lobbyists, continued benefits received from former employers, and more. Prior to Proposal 1, Michigan had one of the strictest term limit laws in the nation, which limited a lawmaker to six years total in the State House and 8 years total in the State Senate, limiting total service in the legislature to 14 years.
By allowing longer service in one chamber, Proposal 1 removed the incentive for legislators to prioritize their next election over the work of the current legislative cycle, and there is optimism that legislators will be given more of an opportunity to develop their policy-making skills. Remember
Massachusetts Ballot Question— Dental Loss Ratio
On November 8, 2022, Massachusetts passed Question 2 on their statewide ballot to establish a dental loss ratio at 83% for dental plans and to require any excess premiums be remitted to customers. Without a loss ratio provision, dental plans are free to spend as much of the patient premiums they collect as they want on operational and administrative costs. The ballot question also required plans to disclose loss ratio projections and base rates prior to taking effect, as well as authorize the Massachusetts Division of Insurance to approve or disapprove of any product rates. The Question passed with over 70% of the vote.
The impact of Question 2 on individual practitioners or patients is yet to be seen. It is likely that any remitted funds for failing to meet the 83% requirement will go to the plan purchaser, whether that is an individual or an employer. However, there is no doubt that this is a win for organized dentistry in the effort to bring more transparency to dental insurance. The MDA is exploring options to pursue similar legislation in Michigan through either legislative efforts or a ballot initiative.
Scan the code to sign up for text Action Alerts. A response takes less than a minute, but results can last a lifetime.

The Holland Free Health Clinic is in need of volunteer health providers for our dental program. Our waiting list for services has grown substantially during the COVID-19 pandemic closure. We are in desperate need of volunteer dental hygienists. As you know, hygienists are essential because they evaluate patient dental concerns, provide prophylaxis, educate patients regarding their oral health, and take x-rays that providers use to evaluate clients. The services hygienists provide help us give more concise care to our clients. We also welcome all other licensed professionals interested in donating their time. Whether it is to provide extractions, restorations, prosthodontics, or to assist—
your services are always needed. HFHC is committed to accommodating volunteers’ availability any day and time. This is a great way to serve the community and earn CE credits for professional license renewal. If you or any of your colleagues are interested, please visit our website (hfhclinic.org/volunteer) to submit a volunteer application today or contact the Dental Program Coordinator, Kaitlyn Meiste at 616.392.3601, ext. 206 or kmeiste@hfhclinic.org.
