West Michigan Culture: Encouraging and Celebrating Others

Perhaps the most notable way that the dentists of West Michigan celebrate each other is with the annual honor of the Silent Bell. Another way to recognize our members is to highlight the unique talents of WMDDS member dentists in the section called “Beyond the Chair.” In this edition, we highlight Dr. Chase Klinesteker, an award winning fish breeder.

Maybe it is a cliché, but we all, in whatever we do, stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us. And, yes, many of those have been giants. I have been awed and humbled by great people that I have met through the WMDDS. Congratulations to Dr. Erick Rupprecht in receiving the Distinguished Service Award (the “Silent Bell”). I do not remember a time in my career and in my involvement with organized dentistry when he was not part of the scene. Naturally, I admired and continue to admire his leadership and his integrity. But with Erick, these were inseparable companions to his doggone friendship! Thank you for your support and encouragement of me, as well as your friendship, Erick.

As part of the celebration of the 75th anniversary in 2020, I hope you each will make a point to attend, volunteer, or participate in upcoming celebratory events. Thank you to the local dentists who volunteered at the Tooth Time 2020 events held in Grand Rapids! There will be opportunities to attend and get involved at the MDA Annual Session being hosted in Grand Rapids this year.

After reading Dr. Sinacola’s article on “The Fluoride Experiment” in the last Bulletin, I browsed back through almost thirty years of Bulletins to look at the 50th anniversary celebration in 1995. Looking back through old Bulletins, I realized how rewarding it has been for me to be part of this community. I am awed and humbled by the great works of those who have gone before and by the great works being done today by those around me.

Receive CE Credit for Volunteer Dentistry “ Am I able to receive CE credit for time spent doing volunteer dentistry? If I can, how do I document this?”

Dentists with specialty licenses issued from the State of Michigan must limit their volunteer services to their area of specialty.

Dentists and retired volunteer dentists may receive continuing education credit for providing volunteer clinical dental services within this state as provided in this rule: • A dentist or retired volunteer dentist may provide volunteer clinical care at a board-approved program that complies with both of the following: – Is a public or non-profit entity, program, or event, or a school or nursing home.

– Provides clinical dental services to the indigent or dentally underserved populations.

Lastly, Board-approved sponsors that provide volunteer continuing education opportunities under this rule shall comply with all of the following: • Apply to the department to obtain approval as a sponsoring entity.

• Retain patient records.

• Retain documentation of all volunteer assignments and the hours of service provided.

• Provide the records and a copy of the assignments and the hours of service provided to the Board upon request.

• Provide each licensee with verification of volunteer work performed by the licensee upon completion of the licensee’s service.

A dentist volunteering would earn 1 credit hour for every 120 minutes of patient services. A practicing dentist can earn up to 20 CE credits while a retired dentist can earn up to 26 CE credits.

Receive CE Credits for Volunteering at Mel Trotter Ministries Dental assistants, hygienists, and active or retired dentists can earn CE locally at Mel Trotter Ministries. CE certificates can be given the same day or upon request as hours have accumulated.

Guidelines obtained from R 338.11703 of the Board of Dentistry Andrea Sundermann graduated from Michigan State University in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in communication with an emphasis on public relations. She worked at two other associations prior to being hired as the director of continuing education at the Michigan Dental Association in 1998. Ms. Sundermann earned her Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential in 2005. She has been involved with the Michigan Dental Foundation’s Mission of Mercy program since its inception in 2013.

Malpractice Coverage for Clinical Volunteering “ If you do volunteer dentistry within the United States (e.g. Mel Trotter or something similar) does your liability insurance cover you when doing this work? Are there negative implications in regards to insurance coverage? Is your liability, or even disability, coverage affected by working at one of these volunteer opportunities?

Are you receiving any compensation for the services provided? Will you be providing volunteer services for more than 28 days per year?

Will you be performing procedures outside of the scope of your normal practice? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, you may need to add your volunteer services as a location on your policy. Although providing volunteer services would not necessarily trigger a change in premium, adding additional services and locations could increase your premium. As far as general liability is concerned, the organization you

MDA Provides Liability Coverage for Mission of Mercy Volunteers Michigan law does provide a qualified immunity from liability for Michigan licensed health care professionals who provide free services for charitable organizations or events. In addition, through the MDA’s Professional Protector Plan, the MDA will provide malpractice insurance for all volunteer licensed health care providers (dentists, hygienists, assistants, physicians, nurses, EMTs) at no charge for this event.

n The 2020 MDA Foundation Mission of Mercy will take place May 28-31 at the Dort Federal Credit Union Event Center in Flint. For details visit: michigandental.org/foundation

n Dental Appreciation Night has been planned with the Grand Rapids Griffins for Friday, March 13, 2020.

n The MDA Committee on Governmental and Insurance Affairs will be considering policies on student loan debt and vaping in 2020. The goal is to develop a policy that will allow the MDA to comprehensively address the ongoing debt burden faced by many member dentists.

n WMDDS and the Tooth Time Task Force organized Tooth Time 2020 on January 23-24. The WMDDS sponsored museum admission for attendees and provided buses for the school field trips. The dental exhibit will remain on the floor of the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum until spring (see page 32 for photos).

ADA The American Dental Association has filed a class action lawsuit against Delta Dental and the Delta Dental Plans Association. The complaint alleges that Delta has engaged in anticompetitive conduct and violated federal antitrust laws by allocating territories of operation and dividing the national market in order to restrict competition and reduce reimbursement rates to dentists.

The complaint goes on to allege that Delta’s anticompetitive acts hurt both dentists and their patients by limiting the choices of dental care available to patients and making it more difficult for dentists to deliver the care that patients need and want.

Several individual dentists have also filed complaints against Delta alleging antitrust violations. The ADA and the individual dentists are requesting the court certify the proceedings as a class action. The court will rule on that request in the coming months.

Sarah Lennan Masterson, DDS, MSD, Grandville Dr. Sarah Lennan Masterson served as a Delegate in 2019 and will continue as a Delegate in 2020.

What is your favorite part about serving in the House of Delegates?

Staying current on state legislative issues, implementing positive change for our profession, and networking with other dentists.

What motivated you to get involved in organized dentistry?

I have always admired those who have paved the way before me.

I wanted to do my part to positively contribute to the dental profession. It was an easy decision when I was asked to participate in organized dentistry.

Why is organized dentistry important to you?

I feel privileged to be part of a team of dental professionals who volunteer their time to support the advancement of the dental profession. It is my hope that my service will help to improve the public’s oral health.

Do you have any hobbies?

Playing piano, golfing, gardening, and volunteering for the Junior League of Grand Rapids. In the winter, skiing and sledding.

What is your favorite place to visit in West Michigan?

Sarah Lennan Masterson, DDS, MSD was born and raised in Frankenmuth, Michigan, where she graduated in 1998 from Frankenmuth High School. She graduated with honors from Michigan State University with a degree in Human Physiology in 2002. She then attended the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and received her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 2006. Following dental school, Dr. Masterson attended Boston University’s Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine and received a Master’s of Science in Dentistry and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in the specialty of endodontics.

She graduated from Boston University in June of 2009, and has been practicing endodontics in the Grandville and Southwest Michigan area since then.

In addition to her delegate duties, Dr. Masterson currently serves as the Vice President of the WMDDS, President of the Kent County Dental Society, and Treasurer of the Michigan Association of Endodontists.

Our final meeting for the year will be on March 11, 2020. We will have a presentation from Jodi Schafer from HRM Services.

New Dentist Forum Daniel Grode, DDS, New Dentist Forum Chairperson, Ada 2020 is under full swing with the first meeting held on February 6th. Dr. Anthony Guinn gave an informative presentation that included many aspects of endodontics for the general practitioner. Representation of our area’s new dentists was strong at our hosted space, Wheelhouse. Thank you to our sponsor, Daaron Fleeger from Huntington Bank, who made the evening possible.

West Michigan Dental Foundation Stephanie Kloostra, DDS, MS, West Michigan Dental Foundation President, Grand Rapids The Annual Appeal Letter was sent out in November of 2019, and donations are still coming in for 2020. Thus far we have collected $22,823 from 65 donors in our community—thank you to all who have generously contributed to our Foundation’s mission. This number is higher than in recent years, thank you!

For those interested, we are still accepting donations.

• The Dental Foundation gave a total of $22,853 in grants to local community organizations for their oral health related initiatives in 2019. We love hearing from these organizations on their progress and are so thankful for our partnerships with them. We are excited to see the new applications we receive for 2020.

• The Dental Foundation also raises money each year with our annual golf outing. This event is always a highlight of the year. See page 12 for details. Stay tuned for more information on when to sign up and how to sponsor. We cannot wait to see you there!

Kent County Oral Health Coalition Colette Smiley, DDS, Co-Chair of Kent County Oral Health Coalition, Grand Rapids A $75,000 partnership grant between Delta Dental Insurance, Health Net of West Michigan, and the Kent County Oral Health Coalition will work to increase awareness and access to dental services for individuals with Healthy Kids Dental coverage. The efforts in this partnership aim to help increase utilization rates and ensure that Kent County youth receive the dental care they need to lead healthy lives.

Health Net and the Kent County Oral Health Coalition are approaching the partnership in a two-pronged way. Health Net’s client services team will assist families to understand their coverage and connect them with a dental provider. The Kent County Oral Health Coalition will lead an awareness campaign through existing partnerships in the community to increase awareness of Healthy Kids Dental benefits.

W. Erick Rupprecht, DDS A Role Model for Service Erick held multiple jobs through the years. He worked at Dow Chemical in the Dowicide and methyl cellulose plants, painted bathrooms at the University of Detroit Mercy, and worked at Ford’s Wixom assembly plant. His interest in dentistry began when he was sixteen years old, working as a co-op laboratory technician for Midland orthodontists Donald Carlsen and Howard Clinthorne.

Erick married his wife, Dawn Martin, in 1996. Dawn and Erick met, and this is no joke, at the Comedy Den. Erick admires, appreciates, and loves Dawn for her ability to keep him grounded. Erick regularly wishes he met Dawn many years earlier.

One of Erick’s greatest joys in life is being a dad. Erick and Dawn have two daughters: Emma, who is a senior at GVSU majoring in illustration and Molly, who is a senior at Forest Hills Central and thinking of a career as an FBI agent. Erick has devoted much of his recent attention to his daughters’ interests and their family hobbies, including farming, 4H Ada Alpaca Amigos, raising horses, photography, and travel. Erick would also like to start growing hops. (Rupprecht Brewing?)

Erick was born in Midland, MI, the oldest child of high school sweethearts, Walter and Joanne. Walter was a chemical engineer for Dow Chemical and Joanne was a chemist and eventually a legal document abstracter, also with Dow. The importance of education and a strong work ethic were instilled in Erick by his parents from an early age, with his mother always there to help with homework and keep him on track with schoolwork. Erick describes his parents as strict but fair. The biggest lesson they taught him was to never quit something you start; you may fail, but you never quit.

An early interest of Erick’s was music. This interest has carried into his adult life and Erick continues to sing with the Grand Rapids Symphony Community Chorus as a bass. He also liked sports but describes his athletic prowess as mediocre at best – a fact that those golfing with him will attest!

You will read all Erick’s professional and personal accomplishments in his CV, but like many Distinguished Service Award recipients, it is what’s not on the CV that you need to know. Erick has been a mentor to so many people and practitioners in and around WMDDS and has assisted so many of our past and present dental society leaders to become the best they can be.

Erick has been asked not once, not twice, but three times to be the campaign chair for an MDA President Elect candidate. This speaks highly of Erick’s ability to understand dental issues, the dental community, and those he has mentored. Erick mentions he was gratified by all three candidates ultimately being elected to serve as MDA President. He is still mentoring our new dentists, participating in the New Dentist Golf Outing to meet them (we know he is not helping their game) and, ultimately, using his experience to help them. Many area dentists owe Erick a debt of gratitude for all he has done for us.

When asked about regrets, Erick noted that he wished he had his first ten years of dental practice back. Erick began his own practice out of school. He believes he could have learned more if he had had older and more experienced clinical mentors. Erick would passionately advise young dentists to find an experienced mentor or two and allow them to help guide their early careers and improve their practices. Now retired from clinical dentistry, Erick has moved into a new career of helping dentists transition into and retire from the practice of dentistry with Legacy Practice Transitions.

As a man who lives the phrase focus on the people, not the events of life, congratulations to Dr. Erick Rupprecht, winner of the 2020 Distinguished Service Award.

Dentists Doing Good What time is it? TOOTH TIME! Tooth time is an annual educational event that promotes oral health for children and families through hands-on activities. This event is sponsored by the WMDDS and is hosted by the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum. Volunteer oral health professionals teamed up with GRCM to provide children, aged pre-school through elementary, opportunities to learn about teeth, oral health, and the field of dentistry.

A team of volunteers staffed ten activity stations that gave children the opportunity to explore different areas of oral health as well as different areas in the field of dentistry. Guests of the event interacted with costumed characters—the Tooth Fairy (played by Dr. Heather Gietzen), Captain Fluoride, Gingervitis, and the Cavity Critter—and played in the Drs. Fang, Molar, and Tusk dental office exhibit.

Almost 1,000 guests, including 334 field trip children with 106 teacher/ parent chaperones, attended the event on January 23rd and 24th of 2020. Children were given oral health take-home bags donated by the ADA. Free admission was made possible on Thursday night through donations from the WMDDS and West Michigan Dental Foundation.

This year was special, as it coincided with the 75th anniversary of the fluoridation of Grand Rapids city water. A special thanks to the MDA for providing a grant to support the celebration of this anniversary. As a tribute to fluoride being added to Grand Rapid’s water supply, fluoride varnish applications were made available to consenting guests on Thursday evening. Children also had the opportunity to “paint fluoride” onto teeth at the event.

Thank you to the Tooth Time Task Force Committee, including co-chairs Drs. Stephanie Rashewski and Sonni Pellillo, Elaine Fleming, Lauren Greer, Maggie Lancaster, Bridgette McGee, Natalie Hall, and all the other Grand Rapids Children’s Museum staff who helped to make Tooth Time a success. Give Big Food Drive Event Tom Shannon DDS, MDS, Grandville Each year, Dr. Shannon hosts a competitive donation drive called Give Big. The goal of this event is to combat the 14.6% rate of food insecurity in West Michigan children by providing as many household and non-perishable food items as possible to local pantries.

Dr. Shannon and his team at Shannon Orthodontics start off the event by delivering donuts, cider and big boxes to their local referring dental offices. To make the donation competitive and fun, contests are run throughout the event. Three awards were given out at the 2019 Give Big event: The Social Media Winner, the Made the News and Did a Radio Interview Award, and the Grand Prize Winner. At the end of a two-week period, Dr. Shannon and his team collect all the donations from participating offices and deliver them to local food pantries.

The Social Media Winner: Hudsonville Family Dentistry The social media award was given to Hudsonville Family Dentistry for posting to social media in a fun and creative way that helped to advertise the Give Big event and helped to drive more donations.

Hudsonville Family Dentistry won this award by receiving the most likes on social media.

The Grand Prize Winner: Michigan Avenue Dentistry The grand prize winner goes to Michigan Avenue Dentistry for collecting the most household and non-perishable food items for donation to local pantries. The team at Michigan Avenue Dentistry collected 2,152 items.

63 offices participated in the 2019 Give Big event, raising just shy of 11,000 items on top of monetary donations!

KCOHC The Kent County Oral Health Coalition works to improve oral health and access to care for Kent County community members. The Coalition is housed at Health Net of West Michigan, an organization that unites health systems, providers, and individuals to improve the health outcomes of Kent County’s most vulnerable citizens. Give Kids a Smile Matthew Lubbers, DDS, Hudsonville + Heather VanNuil, DDS, Hudsonville On Friday, February 7, we treated 19 school-aged children at Hudsonville Family Dentistry for our 10th annual “Give Kids a Smile” event. These children come from local schools in Hudsonville, and while they qualify for Michigan’s Healthy Kids, many of them still lack the resources to receive dental care on a regular basis.

Total treatment provided this year was $11,538—which included cleanings, exams, radiographs, fluoride, fillings, and extractions.

Hudsonville Family Dentistry had a total of 13 volunteers helping the children receive dental care this year. The event is always a huge success and a great deal of fun—our team looks forward to it every year!

Aquarist and Fish Breeder Chase Klinesteker, DDS

By David Selis, DDS, MS Editorial Policies Committee, Grand Rapids Dr. David Selis interviewed Dr. Chase Klinesteker of Grand Rapids (pictured right) about his life “Beyond the Chair” and his hobby of breeding fish species.

DS: How long have you been raising fish?

CK: It all started with a small 3 gallon tank of guppies in 1952. I was 12 years old at the time and I joined the Grand Rapids Aquarium Society shortly after. I started breeding and trading fish in high school, I had 10-12 tanks in my room at the time. In the 80s I built my ‘fish room’ that houses 50 tanks, holding nearly 800 gallons of water.

DS: Tell us about the species of fish you breed.

CK: I currently breed about 50 species of tropical freshwater fish, but through the years I’ve bred over 550 species. I really enjoy raising species that are endangered or extinct in the wild or that are particularly challenging to maintain in a home aquarium. I run two websites that help the home hobbyist with fishing (chasesfishes.com) Uaru Cichlid

and fish breeding (chasesfishes.net). I’m currently in the process of combining these websites. The websites really allow me to help pass on the knowledge that I’ve picked up over decades of keeping fish.

DS: What do you love so much about fish?

CK: Since I was young I really enjoyed watching fish, I always found it relaxing. I truly enjoy learning about all aspects of fish. It teaches you a lot about environments and ecosystems. I am able to participate in the preservation of species in my own home. Many studies have shown that having an aquarium can reduce stress and anxiety levels. I had an aquarium at my office when I was practicing, I think a lot of patients appreciated it.

DS: Have you won any awards?

CK: The Federation of American Aquarium Societies named me breeder of the year in 1984. Through the breeders award program you must write articles about the care and maintenance required of varying species of fish. In doing this, I earned the title of Grand Master.

DS: Do you have a favorite fish?

CK: It’s hard to narrow it down, but my favorite would probably be an Uaru Cichlid.

DS: So, being that you’re a successful breeder what do you do with all the fish?

CK: I do sell some fish to local stores, but mostly I buy, sell, and trade fish at the local fish clubs. I’m actively involved in the Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo Fish Clubs.
