YOUR GATEWAY TO GLOBAL EXPERIENCES

BRINGING THE WORLD OF ARTS TO LENFEST CENTER! DEAR W&L COMMUNITY AND PATRONS

A NOTE FROM DIRECTOR JORDAN PEIMER

Over the past year, it has been a pleasure to spend time with this community—seeing familiar faces, welcoming new ones and sharing in the experience of live performance together. The energy you bring into the hall is what gives these moments their resonance, and I’m grateful to invite you back for a season that continues to build on that shared spirit. We continue this year with a focus on bringing artists from around the world to Lexington in ways that feel immediate and alive. CIRCA, the contemporary circus company from Australia, arrives with “WOLF,” a work of raw physical power and striking beauty. From Mallorca, Spain, La Mecànica Theatre offers “A Teen Odyssey,” a piece that speaks not only to young people, but to the younger selves that live on within us—echoing across time, tracing the quiet threads of memory, longing, and discovery that bind us to one another. From Burkina Faso, Mamadou Diabaté & Percussion Mania bring music that pulses with history and presence, inviting us into a shared rhythm that reaches beyond language and place. In a more intimate register, Roger Guenveur Smith offers “In Honor of JeanMichel Basquiat,” a solo work shaped by friendship as much as by art—moving between memory and tribute to trace the fierce brilliance and enduring echo of a life lived in color.

This season also marks our 35th anniversary, a moment to reflect on where we began and what continues to guide us forward. It feels especially meaningful to welcome Alvin Ailey II, whose dancers carry the vitality and promise of a new generation. Their presence honors a history that includes Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s appearances in our first season and our 25th anniversary, while reminding us that the story is still unfolding. Some of the most lasting impressions of a season are shaped not only onstage, but in the spaces of encounter that surround it. Each of our visiting artists will spend time with students, opening doors to conversation, curiosity, and exchange. And this year, through the generosity of a dedicated donor, Washington and Lee students will be able to attend Lenfest performances free of charge—an investment in access that ensures these experiences are not only witnessed, but carried forward. I hope you will join us as this season unfolds—one moment giving way to the next, each performance opening a new way of seeing and listening. The stage is set not just for what we will watch, but for what we will feel, remember, and carry with us long after the lights come up. It is in these shared experiences that a community takes shape, and I look forward to all that we will discover together. ~Jordan Peimer

STANIAR GALLERY

JOSH T FRANCO “FERAL” (A HISTORY OF ART) SEP 3 - OCT 9, 2026

LECTURE & RECEPTION: SEP 22, 2026 5:30 p.m. WILSON CONCERT HALL

EXHIBITION STANIAR GALLERY WILSON HALL

“On Art History” (for Georgia O’Keeefe), 2022, Acid-free matte board, projector slides (film removed) quartz, acrylic, colored pencil, watercolor.

Artist Josh T Franco first entered art history through an AP course in high school, eventually earning a doctorate in the discipline. His ongoing participation in the field includes making works for museum and gallery spaces while also producing scholarship for publications and lectures. Franco considers making in the studio as research equivalent with time spent in the field, with primary sources in archives and museums and reading secondary sources. Spanning nearly 20 years of his practice, this survey includes drawing, painting, photography, video,

sculpture, installation, sound and performance. Across this variety of media, Franco demonstrates his studio-based consideration of significant art historical figures from rock artist ancestors, to art history’s formative figures such as Heinrich Wölfflin and Erwin Panofsky, to American artists like Georgia O’Keeffe and Robert Smithson. Working through these legacies in the studio provides the artist a space away from the taming disciplinary force of art history. The history of art emerging from Franco’s studio is a feral one.

35TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION LENFEST OUTREACH & ENGAGEMENT FILM SERIES LENFEST OUTREACH & ENGAGEMENT FILM SERIES PRESENTED BY JANUS FILMS/THE CRITERION COLLECTION

JULIAN SCHNABEL

“BASQUIAT” SEP 15, 2026 7 p.m.

W&L Stackhouse Theater BLACK AND WHITE FILM ADMISSION: FREE • No tickets required. Running Time: 108 minutes, no interval.

Julian Schnabel’s tribute to his friend and fellow painter Jean-Michel Basquiat is less a conventional biopic than an impressionistic, sensory immersion into the muchmythologized downtown-Manhattan art world of the 1980s. Jeffrey Wright, in his first lead film role, stars as the visionary artist whose rise from graffiti tagger to art star forces him to confront the glare of sudden fame, along with racism, his own struggles with addiction, and the difficulties of being self-determining and free in America. Bolstered by an ensemble cast that includes a sublime performance by David Bowie channeling Andy Warhol,

Schnabel’s directorial debut—presented here in the filmmaker’s own luminous black-and-white remastering— is a profoundly expressive elegy for a radiant life cut short. Starring Jeffrey Wright, Michael Wincott, Benicio Del Toro, Claire Forlani, David Bowie, Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman, Christopher Walken, Willem Dafoe, JeanClaude La Marre, Parker Posey, Elina Löwensohn, Paul Bartel, Courtney Love, Tatum O’Neal, Chuck Pfeiffer, Rockets Redglare, Michael Chow, David McDermott, Sam Rockwell.

“Memory, Monument, Natural World” Renowned architect and artist Maya Lin will launch the Mudd Center’s year-long series, “Memory, Mind, and Morality,” a theme exploring the ethical dimensions of memory. Rather than treating memory as a passive record of the past, the series examines it as an active, interpretive process that shapes how individuals and communities understand responsibility, identity, and justice. In her keynote address, Lin will present works from her remarkable body of memorials, reflecting on how her deep concern for the environment has shaped her aesthetic vision. She will examine iconic projects such

“

“In Honor of Jean-Michel Basquiat” is a visceral, 60-minute solo theatrical performance created and performed by Obie Award-winning actor and playwright Roger Guenveur Smith. Blending live, realtime sound design by Marc Anthony Thompson with a hypnotic, improvisational spoken-word monologue, the show serves as a deeply personal lyrical elegy rather than a traditional historical biography. This

production directly tackles the legendary painter’s life, the counterculture of the 1980s New York art market and the systemic racism he encountered. Smith’s politically charged soliloquies found their way onto Basquiat’s canvas, and Smith eventually created “Smiley,” the Basquiat-inspired artist/arsonist for Spike Lee’s classic “Do the Right Thing,” one of 10 Spike Lee films.

“The Thief,” 2018, cut tintype.

Dan Estabrook is a contemporary artist based in Brooklyn, New York. His work engages nineteenthcentury photographic processes alongside drawing, painting, and sculpture. Estabrook’s practice reconsiders the history of photography through the construction of “found” images, exploring themes of memory, loss

and the subjective nature of historical narrative. By foregrounding the tension between hand and machine, his work questions photography’s longstanding claim to truth. He has exhibited widely and is the recipient of numerous awards, including a National Endowment for the Arts Artist’s Fellowship.

American photographer Mary Ruth Moore (1936-2023) is best known for her use of historical photo methods, including pinhole cameras and long-exposure processes. She used antique equipment and paper negatives, and her work emphasizes duration, imperfection, and the expressive qualities of natural light. Moore explained, “One of the earliest pioneers of photography, William

Henry Fox Talbot, referred to… ‘a precious ritual, waiting for the light’ “I’m always looking for qualities of light, no matter what my subject matter is. I’m always aware, to the very depths of me, that I am drawing a picture with light.” Moore’s photographs glow with the luminous intensity of Georgia mornings, Italian interiors and the quiet moments of everyday life.

Three women plus 15 instruments equals one good time when Simple Gifts takes the stage. Drawing on an impressive variety of ethnic folk styles, this awardwinning trio plays everything from lively Irish jigs and down-home American reels to hard-driving Klezmer freilachs and haunting Gypsy melodies, spicing the mix with the distinctive rhythms of Balkan dance music, the lush sounds of Scandinavian twin fiddling and original compositions written in a traditional style. Combining tradition with innovation, Simple Gifts creates some of

the finest arrangements in folk music today: swing fiddle creeps into a Romanian dance, spoons show up in an Irish reel and a traditional West Virginia tune is enhanced by a Turkish drum and Indian shruti box. Simple Gifts is well-known for their outgoing stage presence, which is warm, personal, and accented with humor. These women deliver their music with rare intensity and contagious enthusiasm. It’s obvious that Simple Gifts loves the music they play and knows how to share their excitement with the audience. This is an act not to be missed!

EXHIBITION STANIAR GALLERY WILSON HALL

JAN 7 - FEB 5, 2027

Marion Junkin, “Rockbridge—A Spring Landscape,” 1970, Oil on linen, Art Museum at Washington and Lee.

In celebration of the Art Museum at Washington and Lee’s 150 years of collecting fine arts, Staniar Gallery jointly presents “Influencers: Faculty Highlights from the Art Museum Collection.” This exhibition features artwork created by past W&L faculty artists and held in the university’s art collection—highlighting these individuals in their roles as both professors and professional artists. “Influencers” connects the art department’s past with its current gallery. Staniar Gallery was opened in 2006 as a pedagogical space and works in tandem with the Art and Art History Department. The gallery is dedicated to the exhibition of contemporary and historical works in all media by

regionally, nationally, and internationally recognized artists. Originating in 1875 from a bequest of six American paintings, W&L’s art collection has grown to include roughly 15,000 works of art from around the globe. This collection of paintings, works on paper, photographs, ceramics and sculpture is used as an interdisciplinary teaching resource by various academic departments. It supports the Cultural Heritage and Museums Studies Minor, providing student opportunities for hands-on experiences in gallery and museum settings. Integrated into the fabric of the campus, the art collection also enriches the university.

Award-winner Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”) plays the title role in this razorsharp reimagining of Molière’s classic dark comedy. Telling the truth isn’t always that simple. Alice, a brilliant novelist, despises the carefully constructed lies of modern society. But the more she challenges those around her, the fiercer the backlash becomes. Soon, she must confront the price of speaking her truth in a world that would rather silence her. Filmed live on stage at the National Theatre, Indhu Rubasingham directs Martin Crimp’s (“Cyrano de Bergerac”) highly anticipated play.

ENCORE PRESENTATION

Richard Eyre’s beloved production of Bizet’s masterpiece returns to theaters for a special encore this season, led by soprano Elīna Garanča as the title character and tenor Roberto Alagna as Don José in the iconic 2010 Met performance—a fan favorite of The Met: Live in HD series. Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts.

Bizet’s masterpiece of the seductress who lives by her own rules has had an impact far beyond the opera house. The opera’s melodic sweep is as irresistible as the title character herself, a force of nature who has become a defining female cultural figure. “Carmen” was a scandal at its premiere but soon after became a triumphal success and has remained one of the most frequently staged operas in the world.
