IN 2013, THE CHICAGO BOARD OF EDUCATION UNDER MAYOR RAHM EMMANUEL VOTED TO CLOSE NEARLY 50 PUBLIC SCHOOLS DUE TO UNDERUTILIZATION. AS WE APPROACH THE 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THIS DECISION, CHICAGO FACES AN INCREASINGLY DIRE SHORTAGE OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING. CULTURAL FUTURES STUDIES AND PROPOSES PRESERVATION STRATEGIES FOR A SHUTTERED SOUTH SIDE SCHOOL BUILDING THROUGH ADAPTIVE REUSE INTO MULTI-USE AFFORDABLE HOUSING.
THIS STUDIO FOCUSES ON PRESERVATION AND ADAPTIVE REUSE, AFFORDABLE HOUSING, AND CHICAGO’S EARLY AND MID-CENTURY ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY. IT CHALLENGES STUDENTS TO DESIGN IN A WAY THAT UNDERSTANDS THE PAST, ENGAGES THE PRESENT, AND PREPARES FOR THE FUTURE OF COMMUNITIES AFFECTED BY SCHOOL DISCLOSURES.
Formal Concept
THE SITE IS LOCATED IN THE WOODLAWN NEIGHBORHOOD ON 6107 S. INGLESIDE AVENUE. THE PROPOSED PROJECT S INTENDED TO PROVIDE AFFORADABLE HOUSING AND MULTI--USE FACILITIES TO IMPROVE RESIDENTSʼ PHYSCIAL, MENTAL AND PSYCHOSOCIAL WELLNESS. THE LOW-RISE RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX FEATURES 100 ONE-BEDROOM UNITS THROUGH CO-HOUSING OR CO-SHARED LIVING AMONG RESIDENTS WITH SHARED COMMON INDOOR AREAS SUCH AS LIVING ROOM AND KITCHEN, AND SHARED GREEN SPACE SUCH AS COMMUNITY GARDEN WHICH IS ALSO ACCESSIBLE BY THE REST OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD. THE PROPOSAL IS TARGETED AT SINGLE, YOUNG ADULTS AND SENIORS TO PROMOTE A SENSE OF COMMUNITY AND MUTUAL SUPPORT AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE. COHOUSING IS DESIGNED TO PROMOTE SOCIAL CONTACT AND HAS BEEN PROVEN TO SERVE AS AN ANTIDOTE TO SOCIAL ISOLATION. ONE OF THE ADVANTAGES OF COHOUSING IS TO DEVELOP SENSE OF SECURITY AND BELONGINGNESS.

EACH FLOOR CONSISTS OF 20 ONE-BEDROOM UNITS WHERE RESIDENTS HAVE A PRIVATE ACCESS TO THE BEDROOM WITH AN ATTACHED BATHROOM WHERE HALF OF THE ROOMS ARE DESIGNED UNDER ADA GUIDELINES. EACH LIVING ROOM IS SHARED BETWEEN EITHER FOUR OR EIGHT RESIDENTS WITH A COMMUNAL KITCHEN AND UTILITIES ROOM ACROSS THE RESIDENTIAL UNITS ON EACH FLOOR.






THE COMMUNITY BUILDING LOCATED ON THE FAR SOUTH OF THE SIDE CONSISTS OF COMMUNAL PROGRAMS THAT ARE OPEN TO PUBLIC SUCH AS A LIBRARY ON THE GROUND FLOOR INTEGRATED INTO THE ATRIUM DESIGN THAT TRAVELS THROUGH ALL FOUR FLOORS, A FITNESS CENTER WITH YOGA, GYM, AND LOCKER ROOMS ON THE MEZZANINE FLOOR. THE FOURTH FLOOR CONSISTS OF A PEACE ROOM, A MUSIC ROOM, A COMMUNAL KITCHEN AND A CLASSROOM FOR COOKING CLASSES THAT GOES UP TO THE COMMUNITY GARDEN ON THE ROOFTOP.
THE BUILDING SANDWICHED BETWEEN THE RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS SERVES AS A CAFETERIA AND AUDITORIUM SPACE.
THE RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS ARE CONNECTED AT THE TOPMOST FLOOR TO ONE ANOTHER THROUGH A BRIDGE TOWARDS THE COMMUNITY BUILDING. THE COMMUNITY BUILDING CONSISTS OF ENTRY POINTS ON BOTH THE EAST AND WEST DOORS WITH A VISITORSʼ VEHICLE PARKING SPACE ON THE SOUTHEAST CORNER, A BIKE PARKING SPACE ON THE SOUTH SIDE, AND A PLAZA AREA ON THE SOUTHWEST CORNER. THE CAFETERIA AND AUDITORIUM SPACE IS ACCESSIBLE FROM THE WEST SDIE AND NORTH SIDE OF THE BUILDING. THE ROOFTOP COMMUNITY GARDEN ACTS AS A MAJOR COMMUNAL PROGRAM BRINGING THE RESIDENTS ON THE SITE AND THE REST OF THE RESIDENTS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. THE SITE ITSELF ACTS AS A BEACON THAT HOLDS PROGRAMS THAT ARE LACKING IN THE NEARBY WOODLAWN COMMUNITY. THE AUDITORIUM SPACE ACTS AS A VENUE FOR HOSTING PRIVATE EVENTS ONLY ACCESSIBLE TO THE RESIDENTS ON THE SITE.
Adaptive Reuse Facade Strategy
THE EXISTING BUILDING FACADES WERE BROKEN INTO PARTS AND PIECES THAT ARE PRESERVED THROUGH ADAPTIVE REUSE STRATEGIES WHILE SANDWICHING THE NEW FACADES BUILT OUT OF MODERN MATERIALS IN CONTRAST TURE. THE EXISTING BUILDING CONSISTS OF NEOCLASSICAL STYLE ARCHITECTURE WHERE IT WAS CONSTRUCTED OUT OF SIMPLICITY OF GEOMETRIC FORMS, DRAMATIC USE OF COLUMNS, PREFERENCE FOR BLANK WALLS, AND PROJECTI ESIDENTS ON THE SITE AND OTHER RESIDENTS OF THE WOODLAWN COMMUNITY THE HISTORY LATE JOHN FISKE ELEME PARALLEL TO THE NEWLY RENOVATED MIXED-USE RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX.

THIS SECTIONAL AXONOMETRIC FOCUSES ON ONE OF THE COMMUNITY PROGRAMS WHERE THE RESIDENTS ON THE SITE MEET THE REST OF THE RESIDENTS OF THE WOODLAWN NEIGHBORHOOD THROUGH TAKING PART IN A SELF-GROWING ROOFTOP COMMUNITY GARDEN. EVERYONE IS ABLE TO TAKE WEEKLY EDUCATIONAL CLASSES WHERE THEY WOULD BE TAUGHT HOW TO GROW FRESH PRODUCE AND BE ABLE TO COOK TOGETHER IN THE COMMUNAL KITCHEN LOCATED ON THE LOWER FLOOR OF THE ROOFTOP.

THIS STUDIO PROJECT FOCUSES ON UNDERSTANDING HEAVY TIMBER CONSTRUCTION WIDELY USED IN THE CITY OF CHICAGO AFTER THE OCCURENCE OF THE CHICAGO FIRE, REDEVELOPMENT OF THE EXISTING CHICAGO HIGH SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS WITH A CONTRASTING STRUCTURAL AND ENCLOSURE SYSTEM.
THE NEWLY DESIGNED CHI-ARTS IIS MADE UP OF PROGRAM SPACES SUCH AS ADMINISTRATIVE SPACES, A THEATRE SPACE, A THEATRE STUDIO, DANCE CLASSES, PHYSICAL EDUCATION SPACE, MUSIC ROOMS, 2D TEACHING CLASSES, 3D TEACHING STUDIO, A PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO, DRAMA CLASSES, ACADEMIC CLASSES SPACE, A LIBRARY, A GALLERY, AND PEACE ROOMS, AS WELL AS A COMMONS CAFETERIA SPACE WITH AN OUTDOOR ORGANIC GROWING SPACE FOR FRESH FOOD SUPPLY. THE SUPPORT SPACES ARE BEING LOCKED AT THE SOUTH SIDE (BACK SIDE) OF THE BUILDING. THE IRREGULAR CENTRALIZED ATRIUM RUNS THROUGH THE BUILDING FROM THE TOPMOST FLOOR UNTIL THE GROUND FLOOR THAT BRINGS NATURAL DAYLIGHT ENTRY INTO THE MAIN PROGRAM SPACES THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE BUILDING AT DIFFERENT TIME OF THE DAY.

THE CENTRALIZED ATRIUM IS TWISTED, SHIFTED, AND ROTATED CURTAIN WALL SYSTEM THAT SHAPES FUNCTIONALITY OF SPACES AND VIEWS TOWARDS ONE PROGRAM FROM THE OTHER ENABLING FULL TRANSPARENCY WITH SEMI-PRIVACY. THE STRUCTURAL SYSTEM OF THE EXISISTING BUILDING WAS PRESERVED AS A CONTINUATION OF CONCRETE COLUMNS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE BUILDING. IN CONTRAST TO THE EXISTING HEAVY BRICK WALL FACADE, FACETED CURTAIN WALL NORTH FACADE THAT RUNS THROUGH THE ADDED FLOORS WITH AN EXTERIOR CIRCULATION ALONG THE OUTDOOR GREEN SPACE THAT IS FURTHER LAYERED BY LIGHT WOOD FRAMING SHADING SYSTEM.
THE DETAILED FACADE AND WALL SECTION DRAWINGS DEPICT THE NEWLY ADDED UPPER FLOORS MADE UP OF FACETED EXTERIOR CURTAIN WALL SYSTEM WITH A LAYERED LIGHT WOOD FRAMING SHADING SYSTEM THAT KEEPS THE ORIGINAL PROPORTION OF THE FACADE WITH ADDITIONAL SECONDARY AND TERTIARY ELEMENTS OF WOOD FRAMING STRUCTURES.

Xl Shared Dwellings
THIS STUDIO PROJECT FOCUSES TO FIND CREATIVE APPROACHES TO NOT ONLY DESIGN MULTI-UNIT LIVING BUT ALSO TO DEFINE “SHARING” IN MULTI-UNIT LIVING BY STUDYING SECTION QUALITIES OF AGGREGATE LIVING. ALSO TO UNDERSTAND CONTEXT FOR THE RESIDENTIAL TYPOLOGY PHYSICAL AND SOCIAL RECIPROCAL EFFECTS AND SCALE OF LIVING IN MULTIPLES WITH HYBRID PROGRAMMATIC CONDITIONS.
THIS XL SHARING PROJECT CHALLENGES THE MANY FACETS OF “SHARING” SOCIAL, ORGANIZATIONAL, FORMAL, CONTEXTUAL WHILE SPATIALLY STUDYING THE POTENTIALS OF “SHARING” THROUGH A VERTICALLY OR SECTIONALLY DRIVEN SCHEMES. BY CONCEPTS OF “INTERSECT”, “WEAVE”, “GATHER”, AND “INTERLOCK”, PROGRAMS SHARE ACROSS BORDERS BOTH PLANIMETRICALLY AND SECTIONALLY THROUGH MIXING COMMUNAL PROGRAMS AND PROVIDE LIVING RESIDENTIAL SPACES.

THE SITE IS LOCATED IN THE HYDE PARK NEIGHBORHOOD ON 1457 E 53RD ST. THE PROPOSED PROJECT IS INTENDED TO PROVIDE AFFORADABLE HOUSING FOR RECENT UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO GRADUATES GOING THROUGH A JOB SEARCH PROCESS. SINCE THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO MIX COMMUNAL PROGRAMS AND PRIVATE LIVING SPACES, THE PROPOSED COMMUNAL PROGRAMS WERE ADDING PRIVATE COMMUNAL KITCHENS THAT ARE ONLY ACCESSIBLE BY THE RESIDENTS AND A PSYCHOTHERAPY CENTRE THAT IS OPEN TO BOTH THE RESIDENTS AS WELL AS THE PUBLIC. THE COMMMUNAL KITCHENS WOULD BE BENEFICIAL TO INCREASE COMMUNICATION AMONG THE RESIDENTS. THE PSYCHOTHERAPY CENTRE IS ONE OF THE PROGRAMS THAT THE HYDE PARK NEIGHBORHOOD COMMUNITY IS LACKING AND WOULD ALSO BE HIGHLY FAVORABLE TO THE RESIDENTS WHO REQUIRE PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSISTANCE WHILE SEEKING FOR JOBS AFTER GRADUATION.

THE RESIDENTS WOULD EITHER BE LIVING IN A STUDIO OR ONE-BEDROOM APARTMENTS WHERE THE UNITS ARE INTERWEAVING WITH EACH OTHER, CREATING A SHARED CORRIDOR BETWEEN EACH TWO UNITS. THIS ENCOURAGES COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE RESIDENTS. ALL UNITS ARE EQUALLY DOUBLE-HEIGHTED WITH MEZZANINE FLOORS, RECEIVING ABUNDANT NATURAL SUNLIGHT DURING THE DAY. EACH UNIT CONSISTS OF ITS OWN PRIVATE OUTDOOR BALCONY GREEN SPACE. THE COMMUNAL PROGRAMS ARE INTERLOCKING WITH EACH OTHER WHILE SHARING A CORRIDOR JUST AS THE RESIDENTIAL UNITS.


PLANSSECTIONAL PERSPECTIVE OF INTERWEAVING UNITS




THE ENTIRE BUILDING CONSISTS OF NINETEEN FLOORS IN TOTAL WITH A SIMILAR FLOOR PLAN EVERY FOUR FLOORS FOR THE RESIDENTIAL UNITS, COMMUNAL KITCHENS, AND THE PSYCHOTHERAPY ROOMS. ALL CORRIDORS AND UNITS HAVE CLEAR VIEWS TOWARDS THE EXTERIOR SINCE THERE ARE NO OTHER SIMILAR HEIGHT BUILDINGS IN THE NEARBY AREA.





THIS STUDIO PROJECT FOCUSES ON THE XS HOUSE AS A MEANS TO STUDY THE HOUSING CRISIS, A SINGULAR AND TRANSITIONAL DEMOGRAPHIC, EFFICIENCY AND AFFORDABILITY, AND COMMUNITY. THE COMMUNITY OF SINGULAR DWELLINGS BEING A VIBRANT, ACTIVE NEIGHBORHOOD WHERE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES ARE CELEBRATED BOTH PHYSICALLY AND SOCIALLY.

THE SITE IS LOCATED IN THE RESIDENTIAL AREA OF BRIDGEPORT COMMUNITY AT 1240 W 33RD ST, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. THE PROPOSED RESIDENTS OF THE SITE WILL BE AGE 60 AND ABOVE WHO WORK/WORKED IN ART FIELD. THE SITE IS SURROUNDED BY BUILDINGS SUCH AS BRIDGEPORT ART CENTRE, A COMMUNITY CENTRE PARK THAT PROVIDES ART AND WELLNESS PROGRAMS. THE COMMERCIAL AREA NEARBY IS A WALKING DISTANCE FROM THE SITE WHICH SERVES THE RESIDENTS A CONVENIENCE

THE FORMAL CONCEPT OF THE UNITS IS DERIVED FROM A TRADITIONAL GABLE-ROOFED HOUSE FORM, BREAKING THROUGH BY SUBTRACTION, ROTATION, ADDITION, AND EXTRUSION OF ELEMENTS RESPECTIVELY. SUBTRACTION OF THE FORM CREATES PRIVATE OUTDOOR SPACES, ADDITION AND EXTRUSION OF THE FORM CREATES HIGHER CEILING HEIGHTS WITH EXTRA PROGRAM SPACES, WHILE ROTATION OF THE FORM CREATES OUTLOOKING VIEWS AND BRINGS IN INCREASED DAYLIGHT ENTRY.

ALL UNITS HAVE A TIMBER FRAMING STRUCTURAL SYSTEM WITH A MASONRY EXTERIOR FACADE WITH AN INTERIOR PLYWOOD WALL CLADDING AS WELL AS PLYWOOD FLOORING.


EACH DWELLING IS INTENDED FOR ONE RESIDENT, AREA TO RELAX OR SOCIALIZE FOR ONE PERSON AND A GUEST, PROVIDED WITH ABUNDANT DAYLIGHT ENTRY AND NATURAL VENTILATION. EACH UNIT IS PLACED ADJACENT TO ANOTHER, LEAVING ACCESS TO ALLOW CLEAR VIEW TO THE EXTERIOR. ALL UNITS ARE ORIENTED IN A WAY TO SPECIFICALLY AVOID ENTRY OF THE EVENING SUN TO AVOID EXTRA HEAT. NONE OF THE UNITS ARE FACING SOUTH BUT EITHER FACING NORHT, EAST, OR WEST. THE EXTERIOR AREAS ON THE SITE CONSISTS OF GATHERING AREA TO CREATE COMMUNICATION AND HARMONY BETWEEN THE RESIDENTS.


LONGITUDINAL SITE SECTION
SECTION A-Aʼ EMPHASIZES ON THE SKYLIGHT ENTRY THAT IS BROUGHT INTO THE UNIT DIRECTLY TO THE PRIVATE HANGOUT AREA ON THE MEZZANINE FLOOR. THE STORAGE SPACE ON THE LOWER FLOOR IS LOCKED UNDER THE STAIRCASE.
SECTION B-Bʼ ILLUSTRATES THE DOUBLE-HEIGHTED DWELLING UNIT WITH A BEDROOM SPACE AND A PRIVATE HANGOUT AREA ON THE MEZZANINE FLOOR WITH A BATHROOM AND AN OPEN KITCHEN SPACE ON THE LOWER FLOOR.
