Lyons, Lady Lyons set to start hoops seasons Lyon County’s basketball teams are set to start the 2019-2020 basketball season in just a few short weeks. Head coaches Ryan Perry and Jeff Doom took a few minutes to share their thoughts with area media in November as the team’s set their sights on the first set of scrimmages.

For the Lyons, a few key pieces are as new to high school play as their head

coach. But the young Lyon team will benefit from hours of AAU and competitive play.

The Lady Lyons, meanwhile, have a veteran coach fielding one of his most experienced teams in years. Doom will start the season with six seniors. They will join four of last season’s returning starters.

Overall, both teams have a good mix of talent, experience and personal expec-

tations.

For anyone watching practices the last few weeks inside the Jason White Gymnasium, they’ve probably also noticed an impressive work ethic in each squad.

Both teams will open their season on the road, continuing the tradition of playing against Caldwell County on Dec. 3.

Experience guides Lady Lyons Long-time Lady Lyon head coach Jeff Doom is one of the most experienced skippers in the Second Region.

Most years, he leads a young team into a competitive Fifth District schedule.

This season, Doom will have one of his most experienced teams in years.

With six seniors, the Lady Lyons will field five more than last year.

“We did only graduate one, but when you graduate Allison Murphy, it’s a big loss,” Doom said. “But everyone else had a lot of playing experience coming back. What was valuable [last season] was that practice time. What I’m seeing in the leadership role, these kids know a lot of the stuff that we do, so all the old stuff we’re not having to spend a lot of time on that.”

Doom said that extra time has given them the freedom to work on a few new plays and offenses.

“We can throw a lot of different teams out there,” Doom said. “I’ve got four different groups we’re looking at that we could put on the floor. That’s making it a lot more fun at practice. That gives us a lot of competition in practices.”

Of the six returning seniors — Ashleigh Butts, Ashlyn Doom, Isabella Ortiz, Taylyn Sutton, LuLu Taylor and Kayden Watts — none were part of the regular starting five. That’s pushing players to put in extra work at practice to earn their spot.

“Hopefully this year, I want to be a leader to these girls,”Sutton said. “I want

to be a good leader and hopefully they’ll step up to be leaders.

“I learned a lot from the coaches and the players themselves. We’ve learned how to work together as a big team, how each other’s minds work so we can read each other on the court.”

Sutton and the seniors will be joined by three juniors: Calista Collins, Katelyn Dykes and Kenttavia Matthews. Collins is looking to step up this season.

“I think our team is getting a lot better offensively,” said Collins, a multisport athlete for Lyon County. “I think we all had to work hard on that, and stepping up defensively.

Doom said the team is on the same page as they’ve changed practices a bit and maintained a single focus.

“I see a lot of team unity,” Doom said. “I see a lot more energy. I think part of that is we’ve changed up and segmented our practices this year. The kids know what’s coming next instead of being shocked. I think that’s helped and got them more energetic and more focused.

“Last year we had a bit of trouble. I felt like one of our biggest problems was we had a lot of jealousy on the team. What we’re trying to find out this year is if that goes away, we can be really good.”

With the change in practice and loss of last season’s leading rebounder, Doom said that area has been a focus.

“We’re trying a lot of rebounding,” Doom said. “One of our deficits last year was rebounding, offensively and defensively.

We’re spending one of those segments — 30 to 45 minutes a day — on rebounding. We’re tall, we’ve got good size, but we haven’t been using it.

“Don’t be surprised that if you see someone skip a blockout that they’re not in the game very long.”

On the outside, fans can expect to see perimeter shooting from Cathryn Brown, Rose Smith and Taylor. Doom also commended Gracen Wynn’s shooting.

“She came in and did a great job over the summer. She can knock down the shots from outside. I would love to run her at the point simply because she sees the floor so well and is unselfish.”

New coaches, new day for Lyons The 2019-2020 Lyons have three things in abundance: youth, size and potential.

Last season the Lyons started a trend towards utilizing a talented young class that had plenty of height and high motors. Under new coach Ryan Perry, several of those players have added muscle mass and look to join an experienced group of underclassmen on an aggressive schedule that takes the team to Marshall County’s Hoopfest, the Mustang Shootout in McCracken County and the Campbellsville Holiday Classic.

“The guys have bought in,” Perry said. “We had some guys transform their bodies over the summer. They’ve bought in to working hard in the weight room. I think we’re going to open some eyes with guys that people have never heard of.”

Perry said the team has adjusted to the coaching change from long-time leader Jeff Embrey.

“It’s been an interesting transition,” Perry said. “I’ve been the coach at the middle school, so I’ve done a little bit of it. With the high school there’s a lot more responsibility for planning, red tape stuff behind the scenes you didn’t know was going on.”

Taking the reins, Perry asked his players to buy into a knew approach.

“I expect a different kind of thing than some people do,” Perry said. I expect a lot of discipline. I like to play hard, get up and down the court hard. Those are things I wanted to make sure everybody was on the same page with.”

Those expectations don’t change despite having the dual role of father and coach to his son Travis, last year’s leading scorer as a seventh grader. Still, it presents some unique challenges.

“We’ve got a lot of young guys, but we’ve got guys who have been on the court already in tough situations,” Perry said. “But I’ve got some guys that I’m still looking to step up and take leadership roles.

“It’s a little more difficult than I thought it would be,” Perry said. “I think he got a lot of respect from the team and the coaching staff last year.”

Perry said he expects middle schoolers Jack Reddick and Brady Shoulders to see some time on the court. Both have added on some size, a trend that’s continued with sophomores Nick Whalin — a 6-foot, 3-inch left-hander — and Jackson Shoulders.

“It’s hard to coach your son at any level,” Perry said. “I’ve coached him since he could walk, but the transition to high school is a little bit different. I demand the same thing out of him that I do everybody else. He probably gets held to a higher standard than everybody else.

He’s doing well with the adjustment.

Perry said the team is still looking for leadership, noting it’s difficult to replace quality individuals like Gabe Board and Gabe Defew.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if we didn’t start and eighth grader, three sophomores and a junior this year, which is pretty young,” Perry said. “A lot of those guys have gotten minutes at important situations. Those guys are growing up everyday.”

“They’ve really put some muscle on and got some confidence,” Perry said.

Shoulders and Whalin are part of a sophomore class that includes Gunnar Bingham and Luke Gilbert. Three juniors who could see some time this season are Kade Blackburn, Corey Cissell and Trey Hawkins. They will server as upperclassmen with seniors Justin Crawford and Jeremiah Wilkerson.

Crawford is one several returning players with both size and experience.

One of the handful of players to spend most of his career under coach Embrey’s program, Crawford was looking forward

to the upcoming season.

“I think this year will be more energetic,” Crawford said. “I think the defense is going to be a lot better. Last year we didn’t really press or play good defense.”

Crawford said he hopes he can step up and provide leadership.

The center was part of last season’s squad which went 21-10 and won the district championship.

With a team that matches up well with a typically physical Fifth District and plenty of talent, time on the court could come down to players who put in the extra work. Despite the high expectations on his

players and their growth, Perry wants to put out something fans will want to watch.

“I want [fans] to say we’re playing a fun style of basketball,” Perry said. “I like to play fast. Most everything we do is on the defensive end. We try to turn people over, score in transition. If we’re open we’re going to shoot shots. I want the fans to leave and think they watched an exciting brand of basketball.”

Lyon County fans will have a chance to see that brand during the season opened Dec. 3 at Caldwell County. The Lyons’ first home game is Dec. 13 against district for Crittenden County.

The 2019 high school soccer season is over.

For local teams, there were district and regional championship repeats during postseason play. The games also saw the extension of a shutout record for one local program, as well as some firsts.

In First District soccer action, McCracken County swept Paducah Tilghman to repeat as title holders. The Lady Mustangs had a first this year, though, advancing to the championship game of the First Region tournament.

In the Second District, the Marshals and Lady Marshals extended their respective best seasons in years. For the girls, the program extended its team shutout record to 18, while keeper Carlin Whirley extended her individual record to 17.

In the Fifth District, Trigg County won the boys title. The Lady, meanwhile, repeated as girls champions.

First District Girls GAME ONE | Paducah Tilghman bested St. Mary by a single goal twice during the regular season, including an overtime penalty shootout in their first meeting. In the first game of the First District tournament, the Lady Tornado had a bit easier time as Shelby Nickal earned a hat trick while keeper Molly Watkins and her defense got the shutout.

It extended Nickal to 15 goals on the season.

CHAMPIONSHIP | Paducah Tilghman lost by a combined 7-1 during the two regular season meetings with McCracken County. On the surface, that wasn’t a reason for a lot of Lady Tornado hope heading into the district tournament... except for it being an improvement over 2018, when Tilghman lost the two regular season matchups by a combined 21-1. On Oct. 11, Tilghman got ahead early and held a one goal lead before ultimately falling 3-1, unable to answer goals by Olivia Bogaczyk, Abby Beth and Hillary Hollowell.

5Andrew Davidson • Tilghman GAME ONE | St. Mary surprised more than a few teams this season with a retooled defense that helped the Vikings finish with their first winning season in seven years.

Still, the Vikings struggled with district heavy weights Paducah Tilghman and McCracken County. That trend continued in tn the opening round of the First District tournament. Jackson Mundy notched two goals, while Quinn Atnip and Axel Loazia picked up one each as the Tornado bested the Vikings 4-1.

5Josh Kuntz • McCracken CHAMPIONSHIP | By virtue of a flawless district record, McCracken County earned a first round bye in the tournament. The Mustangs entered on a 5-1-2 run, with the only loss coming to then 17-1 Henry Clay, a semifinalist in last year’s state tournament. Against the Tornado, the Mustangs used a varied attack to earn their third win of the season over Paducah Tilghman. Josh Kuntz, Ian Leatherman and Jaxon Miller all earned goals in the 3-0 decision. With the win, McCracken County finished action against district opponents 5-0, outscoring them 22-4.

Second District Girls GAME ONE | Murray earned a 10-0 win over Mayfield to kick off the Second District girls tournament. Madeline Howell, Angela Gierhart, Lily Vanover, Riley Campbell, Hollis Bourque, Peyton Wray, Jayln Fuqua and Makayla Galyean notched goals in the contest, ending Mayfield’s season at 2-19.

GAME TWO | Goals by Elle Carson, Anna Hill, Zoe Stom and Bailey pushed Calloway County to a 4-3 decision over Graves County in the Second District’s second game. For the Lady Eagles, Syndey Gream, Reese Gream and Hadley Looper scored in the loss. Keepers Chaney Warren and Hannah McAdoo split time in the goal for Graves, while Sunny Clark earned the win for Calloway.

GAME THREE | With eight minutes remaining on the clock, Whitley Watwood found the left side of the net from the right corner for the only goal in a defensive showdown against Murray’s Lady Tigers. The Lady Marshals had beaten Murray twice during the regular season by in 3-0 and 7-0 decisions. The win set a new program record single season shutout of 15.

CHAMPIONSHIP | Marshall County’s lone district loss this season came in a 1-0 decision against Calloway County. In the First District championship, the Lady Marshals got the final word with a 2-0 decision over the Lady Lakers. Six minutes into the first half, Kallen Fuller scored for the 1-0 lead. Carmen Gunn earned the go ahead goal on a direct kick after a foul 13 minutes into the second half.

Playing at host Mayfield, Marshall County earned a third straight district championship and the 19th in program history.

GAME ONE | Cristian Leon scored Mayfield’s lone goal against Calloway County in the opening round of the Second District tournament on Oct. 7. It was enough to push the Cardinals in semifinal action.

Goalkeeper Diego Juarez made 26 saves to secure the shutout and the win.

GAME TWO | Bryson Penn earned a hat trick to lead Marshall County’s scoring in a 6-0 decision over host Mayfield as the Second District tournament continued. William Lynch, Collin Riley and Drake earned one apiece in the win. Keeper Ben Burkeen picked up the shutout win, while Mayfield’s Diego Jaurez defended 23 shots on goal in the loss.

GAME THREE | Chase Renick earned two goals to go along with scores by Gabe Taylor and Charles Pemwell in Murray’s 4-2 win over Graves County. It was the third time the Tigers had bested the Eagles in 2019.

The first was a 2-1 win for the Marshals in double overtime. Marshall won again Sept.

10 on a penalty kick shootout. In the Second District championship, it again came down to a shootout between the two teams. With keeper Ben Burkeen holding the advantage, the Marshals claimed the title 1-0.

First Region Girls GAME ONE | First Region girls soccer host Marshall County earned six unanswered goals to open the tournament on Oct. 15 against Paducah Tilghman.

The Lady Marshals were unable to break through the Lady Blue Tornado defense until the final 13 minutes of the half when Carmen Gunn made a drive into the box, scoring as Tilghman keeper Molly Watkins collided with defender Lily Holm. Five minutes later, Gunn earned her 91st career goal on a header, converting a pass by Kallen Fuller for the second goal. Gunn also assisted on the game’s third goal, sending a pass to Mia Teague as Marshall took a 3-0 lead into the break.

In the second half, Gunn earned her hat trick with 23 minutes remaining, dribbling into the goal for a score. Fuller extended the lead to 5-0 midway through the half, while Whitley Watwood earned the final goal.

GAME TWO | Playing at Marshall County, the Lady Mustangs paced their way to a 5-3 decision over the Lady Lakers on Oct. 16 to advance to the championship round for the first time in the program’s history. Olivia Bogaczyk earned a hat trick and an assist, while Molly Thomas and Hillary Hollowell also had goals. Zoe Stom scored twice for the Lady Lakers to go along with a goal by Elle Carson.

CHAMPIONSHIP | A header by Loralei Samson off a corner kick by Janie Pagel ricocheted off a McCracken County player in the box to score the lone goal as Marshall County bested McCracken County 1-0. It was the first time for the Lady Mustangs to advance to the championship round, while it marked the Lady Marshals’ third straight region title and 20th in the program’s history.

GAME ONE | First Region hosts McCracken County notched four goals against Second District runnerup Murray in their first game of the tournament Oct. 14. Caleb Madison, Nathan King, Jaxon Miller and Dylan Deweese earned goals, while freshman Josh Kuntz had an assist.

Keeper Gavin O’Donley had four saves on the night as McCracken County’s defense proved near impenetrable.

GAME TWO | Second District champion Marshall County used goals by Bryson Penn, William Lynch,Kiefer Court and Collin Riley to take a 4-1 decision over Paducah Tilghman. It was the second meeting for the two teams. The Marshals had opened their season Aug. 12 with a 3-1 decision over the Tornado. In regional play, Ivan Aburto scored Tilghman’s lone goal, while Marshall County keeper Ben Burkeen recorded three saves.

CHAMPIONSHIP | The Marshals battled to a 2-0 win over tournament host McCracken County on Oct. 16. Bryson Penn — who would be named the First Region Player of the Year following the conclusion of the tournament — used a header to convert a corner kick for the opening goal midway through the first half. The Mustangs had controlled play through most of the first half, but had been unable to break through Marshall County’s defense, led by keeper Ben Burkeen. McCracken County had a spate of yellow cards to open the second half as the contest stayed a physical midfield matchup.

Marshall County got some breathing room in the final six minutes as Penn brought the ball down the left side, crossing it over to Chase Riley. Riley took the shot from about 15 feet out, notching the game’s second goal. The Marshals held on to take the shutout victory and claim their first regional title since the 2014 season (when Marshall defeated McCracken 2-1). It was also the first under head coach Donnie Heath, who earned First Region Coach of the Year honors.

Lyon’s seasons end in regionals Staff Report

The Lady Lyons claimed their second consecutive Fifth District title Oct. 8 with a 2-1 decision over Trigg County.

Lyon opened the tournament with a 4-0 win over Crittenden County on Oct. 7. Rose Smith led scoring with two goals, followed by Sydney Hoffman and Emily Smith who scored one each. Keeper Abby Smith had 10 saves in the shutout.

Against Trigg, Smith scored both goals in the win. Sydney Hoffman earned an assist.

In regional action, the Lady Lyons fell 7-1 against Hopkinsville. Rose

Smith denied Lady Tiger keeper Vy Nguyen the shutout, while Abby Smith made 16 saves for the Lady Lyons.

With the loss, the Lady Lyons finished their 2019 campaign 9-13.

Smith led the way scoring for 2019, tallying 41 goals and one assist.

Also scoring for the Lady Lyons this season were: Sydney Hoffman (6), Cristsa Cummins (3), Emily Smith (3), Destiny Dycus (2), Bailey Guess (1), Mary Beth Davis (1), Kayden Watts (1).

Abby Smith earned 226 saves for the Lady Lyons in 2019.

The Lyons finished the season as runnerup in the Fifth District to Trigg

County after the Wildcats claimed the title 6-0. In Second Region action, the Lyons fell in the opening round to Henderson County, while Trigg County fell 3-1 to University Heights Academy.

Keeper Cole Schroeder had 18 saves in the district tournament game and 24 in regional action. Schroeder was a bright spot for the Lyons this season, who were outscored 114-19.

For the year, Schroeder had 505 saves, averaging 25 per game.

Of Lyon’s 19 goals, Todd Huddleston scored (8), followed by Jeremiah Wilkerson (3), Levi Willis (2), Timothy Stewart (2), Nathan Hague (1) and Walker Suitor (1).

The Lady Lyons softball team held their 2019 Zombie Glow Run/Walk 5k at the Lee S. Jones Park in Eddyville on Sept. 27. The fifth annual event serves as a fundraiser each year by the booster club. Funds go to purchase warmups and uniform components, pay for travel expenses for tournaments, and purchase practice equipment. The boosters have also used past Zombie Glow Run money to partner with the county and the Diamond Club on field improvements.

The Lady Lyons will open the 2020 season in mid-March as the defending Fifth District champions and Second Region finalists.

Nimmo named Mr. Golf 2019

Staff Report By two strokes, Jay Nimmo is the 2019 KHSAA State Golf Championships individual medalist. Nimmo took the title over 2018 champion John Marshall Butler from Trinity, who finished second, and Owen Stamper, an Allen County-Scottsville senior, who placed third.

The Marshall County golfer played strong throughout the tournament. He was on par Saturday, eventually finishing 3-under for the tournament.

Nimmo has already been recognized back home with a sign noting his accomplishment. It hangs in Olive with fellow state champion, Travis Thompson.

Following the season, he was named the 2019 Mr. Golf Kentucky.

Lexington Christian Academy senior Laney Frye repeated as Kentucky’s Ms. Golf for the 2019 season, while junior Nimmo earned honors as Kentucky’s 2019 Mr. Golf with the AllState First & Second Team announced

Frye totaled 925 points to become the first repeat winner as Ms. Golf since Lydia Gumm of North Hardin did so from 2010 to 2012. Frye was also a member of the All-State First

Team in 2017. She secured the Ms. Golf Award by finishing as the runner up of the 2019 Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac KHSAA State Championship.

During the regular season, Frye won four tournaments and finished tied for runner up in the KGCA All State Championship. This year’s runner-up was junior Faith Martin (South Warren High School), who finished 35 points behind Frye with a total of 890 points, and also finished tied for second at the KGCA All State Championship and concluded her season by finishing third in the KHSAA State Championship.

Nimmo totaled 915 points to leave him 110 points ahead of runner up senior Drew Doyle (St Xavier High School) using totals from the best seven All-State Point Invitational results during the regular season plus placement in the Regional and State Tourna-

ments. Nimmo completed his season by winning the 2019 Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac KHSAA State Championship.. During the season, Nimmo finished with ten Top 10 finishes in Invitational tournaments with four wins while finishing third in the KGCA All State Championship and winning the Boys Region 6 Championship. This is the second time Nimmo has earned a spot on the First Team. Doyle finished as Runner Up in the KGCA All State Championship and concluded his season with a Runner Up finish at the KHSAA State Championship as well.

Marshall County’s Savannah Howell was also recognized, named to the 2019 All State Girls Golf First Team.

The All State Golf First and Second Teams are chosen by points earned in high school invitationals, KGCA All State Championships, Regional Tournaments and the KHSAA State Championship. Invitationals submit their results to the All-State Points Committee comprised of Directors from Golf House Kentucky, the Kentucky Golf Coaches Association, and boys and girls high school coaches.

The First Team players and coaches will be honored at the AllState Banquet on Sunday, November 3 at Keene Trace Golf Club (Champions Course). The banquet is sponsored by the Kentucky PGA Junior Tour (Golf House Kentucky) and the Kentucky Golf Coaches Association (KGCA). Also competing in this year’s tournament was Lyon County’s Cathryn Brown, who finished with a best round of 76 and placed 12th overall during the state tournament. It was the highest finish for a female golfer in the school’s history. She is the younger brother of Cullan Brown, a former state champion who hold’s the district’s only state title in any sport.

For area youth teams, it looks like they may have to find a new place to spend the rainy, cold western Kentucky winter months.

According to reports from WPSD. Jackson Purchase Energy Corporation has purchased a site for their proposed new headquarters. It’s also the current location of the Paducah Sports Plex, which is a haven for basketball, volleyball and soccer teams looking to extend their respective seasons.

An article by The Paducah Sun’s David Zoeller cited a JPEC report that indicated (somehow) it would be more expensive ($22.3 million) to refurbish the building they currently own as opposed to buying at building at the cite near Kentucky Oaks Mall ($21.6 million). How the new construction and property purchase would be cheaper than refurbishing or building on its current site is unclear, as some details of plans submitted to the Public Service Commission — the governmental entity which approves or denies projects planned by utilities in the commonwealth — remain closed to the public.

It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to many as the site has been for sale for several years.

Still, it’s likely an unfortunate end for warm weather athletes of soccer and baseball who try to stay active in winter months. It’s also a hit for volleyball and basketball teams. They will have some options in area gymnasiums and other facilities — Mayfield, for one, has an indoor facility that typically stays pretty busy in the off months — but it could be situation of too many teams vying for a few places.
