Lady Marshals win first state golf title

For the first time in school history, Marshall County’s high school girls golf team has claimed the state championship.

Head coach Aaron Beth said he hopes the girls appreciate the achievement.

“As a high school coach, this is the ultimate goal,” Beth said. “I realize how special it is. I’m not sure the kids will for 20 years or so.”

On Oct. 10, tournament favorite Marshall County didn’t just win, they dominated the competition by 39 strokes over

second place South Warren (658) at the Kentucky High School Athletic Association State Championship. Tournament play was held at Bowling Green.

Marshall County seventh grader Trinity Beth (148) finished fourth individually, followed by teammate Savannah Howell (149). Apollo junior Macey Brown beat out Madison Central’s Elizabeth Eberle after both finished at 1-over-par 145 for the top two spots. Bullitt East sophomore Macie Brown finished third.

Marshall County’s Nimmo repeats as state champion Staff Report

Battling the night and a final hole playoff, Marshall County’s Jay Nimmo won his second consecutive state high school golf title, shooting a 141 across the two day tournament.

Nimmo and Cooper High School’s Rylan Wotherspoon were tied at 3-under par after 36 holes, setting up a showdown at hole 18, a par-5 challenge during daylight hours.

Without the luxury of light, Nimmo and Wotherspoon battled until Nimmo used a short three-foot putt for the win.

According to WKDZ radio, Nimmo is only

golf title for their school, shooting a 314 the first day and 305 on Saturday. Marshall County got solid play from junior Megan Hertter (tied for 16th, 157), eighth-grader Katie Roberts (37th, 163) and sophomore Elsie Riley (tied for 69th, 180).

It was a continuation of success for Marshall, having won 10-of-11 tournaments this season.

“It was a total team effort,” Beth said.

“These girls have worked hard. I’m proud of the whole team and we appreciate all the support from the community throughout the year.”

the third golfer since 1957 to win consecutive titles, joining fellow First Region golfer Case Cochran of St. Mary, who did it in 2005-2006.

Nimmo wasn’t the only western Kentucky golfer in the top 10 this week. Peyton Purvis of St. Mary finished in a two-way tie for third with a two day total of 142.

Nimmo’s teammates helped push Marshall to third overall, eight strokes behind champion Trinity (Louisville) and Taylor County. Camden McLeod (77), Trey Wall (82) and Preston Futrell (83) competed for the Marshals.

7th grader earns Ms. Golf Kentucky title Staff Report

Marshall County seventh grader Trinity Beth has been named Ms. Golf for 2020, as the Kentucky Golf Coaches Association and Golf House Kentucky have released this year’s All State First Team and Second Team.

Beth was a runaway victor of Ms. Golf, ending the season with a 125-point cushion over runner up Casey Powell, a senior at Paul Laurence Dunbar. Beth was a member of the dominant Marshall County girls team which won both the All-State and KHSAA team titles. On an individual basis, she was the runner-up in the All-State Championship while collecting a fourth-place finish at Bowling Green in the State Championship. But it was three victories and two runner-up finishes as an individual in over the course of the season that pushed her to the top in a comfortable manner. Still having five more high school seasons beyond this year, Beth has established herself as one of the top players in the state this fall.

20/21 Basketball Season Staff Report

Hoops are on the horizon for high schools across Kentucky. Most teams in the first two regions will open their seasons the last week of November.

On the following pages, West Kentucky Sports has compiled schedules for teams in the first five districts as of Oct. 25. Some schedules were incomplete as of presstime.

Below, we take a look at a few preseason favorites.

BOYS

Marshall County: The Marshals won the Fourth District title last season and fell one point short of claiming the First Region title. In November, Marshall County brings back several of those pieces, including nationally ranked Zion Harmon and several seniors.

Lyon County: The future is bright in Lyon County, with the top five scorers (Travis Perry, Jackson Shoulders, Nick Whalin, Brady Shoulders and Gunnar Bingham) all returning from last year’s Fifth District championship squad. Even better for Lyon fans: of those five, two are freshman and three are juniors.

Paducah Tilghman: With six returning seniors, Paducah Tilghman’s Blue Tornado brings back three of last season’s top five scorers(Eli Brown, Mian Shaw and Troy Williams), which finished the season second offensively behind McCracken County (2,197 to 2,282).

GIRLS

Marshall County: Head coach Aaron Beth took over for the Lady Marshals midway through the season, helping lead the team to second overall in First Region scoring, and earning district and regional titles. Marshall’s state tournament bid was cut short by COVID-19 restrictions, but the Lady Marshals return their top six scorers from last season (Cayson Conner, Halle Langhi, Jada Driver, Presley Jezik and Mia Teague).

McCracken County: Sophomores Destiny Thomas and Catherine Sivills return for 2020-2021 after leading the Lady Mustangs to a 23-10 record and the Second District championship laster season.

With other pieces returning, the Lady Mustangs could be set for this year.

Graves County: The Lady Eagles lost a few starters to graduation, but return a solid cast of players, including Avery Myatt, Nealey Jackson and Ellie Carter. The Lady Eagles fell to the Lady Marshals 52-50 in overtime during last season’s regional tournament, but could make a decent run again this year.

For a fourth consecutive year, Marshall County’s Lady Marshals are the First Region champions.

It was a repeat of the Oct. 15 Second District championship with Marshall taking on Murray. The Lady Marshals won that contest in a lopsided 9-1 decision. On Oct. 22 at host McCracken County, the two teams proved anything can happen in the post season.

The night could forecast bright futures for both teams as every score notched in the

match came off the foot of a sophomore.

Four minutes into the contest, Lady Marshal Kelsey Crass broke through Murray’s backfield for the opening goal. Ten minutes later, Mia Teague extended the lead to 2-0.

With 12 minutes remaining in the half, Kyra Jones converted a corner kick to get the Lady Tigers back into the contest. Six minutes later, Abby Bevil turned a loose corner kick into Marshall’s third goal, booting it into the back of the net.

Abby Bevil The Lady Tigers would try to rally in the second half following a score by Peyton Wray 10 minutes into the half, but Murray was unable to get by Marshall County’s defense, led by keeper Parker Perry. Senior Whitley Watwood and freshman Chase Hill kept the backfield clear through most of Murray’s aggressive attack as Marshall earned the 3-2 win.

Marshall would advance on to the state tournament, but fall 1-0 to Owensboro Catholic.

Mustangs win second ever First Region title Staff Report For the second time since forming in 2013, McCracken County claimed a First Region title. The Mustangs won 2-1 over Marshall County.

The last time the Mustangs won the title was 2016, when they won 2-0 over Graves County. Four years later, the Mustangs held the First Region’s most potent offense to one goal, while scoring twice against the First Region’s stingiest defense.

It was the second time the Mustangs played the Marshals this season, with the first resulting in a scoreless match.

Playing in Draffenville on Oct. 22, Kian Court scored midway through the first half for a 1-0 lead for the Marshals. The score would remain unanswered until eight minutes into the second half when McCracken’s Baker Allard scored off of a corner kick to tie the game.

Jaxon Miller scored off a penalty in the

final six minutes to give the Mustangs the go ahead goal. Keeper Gavin O’Donley held on for the win through the final minutes to secure the title.

The Mustangs run ended two nights later inthe opening round of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s state tournament. McCracken County fell 1-0 to Daviess County.

On Oct. 31, St. Xavier won the boys state title 1-0 over South Warren.

Lyons, Lady Lyons set to take court

Staff Report With a social distancing plan in place, Lyon County’s Lyons and Lady Lyons are preparing for their 2020-2021 seasons.

Both teams will host visiting Dawson Springs on November 24 in a double header at Jason White Gymnasium.

School officials will start the season with reduced seating capacity. There will be seats available to season ticket holders, players and family members of both the home and away teams.

With several members returning from each of last season’s lineups, both squads are looking to build on previous success. The Lady Lyons won the Second Region All A Classic 56-37 over Caldwell County last year, while the Lyons went 23-10 as part of their Fifth District championship season. The Lyons finished the season with the second highest point tally in the Second Region (2,378 team points, second only to Madisonville-North Hopkins).

Brown finishes 7th at state tournament Staff Report

Lyon County’s Cathryn Brown topped off her 2020 high school golf season with a seventh-overall finish at the state tournament.

Brown qualified for state with fifth place finish in the girls’ 1st Region Golf Tournament at Calvert City Country Club. Her finish was the highest finish by anyone not on the host team. At the regional, Brown recorded a 3-over-par 75 to finish two shots behind medalist Trinity Bet, who would finish her season as the 2020 Ms. Golf Kentucky.

At state, Brown had a 3-over par 75 in round one and followed it up with a 77 to finish 8-over par. Her finish put her in a three-way tie for seventh.

It was the end of a season with a range of emotions for the golfer, who lost her older brother Cullan Brown to cancer.

Lyon County Lady Lyon Kaelyn Conger has announced her intent to attend Quincy University to continue her athletic and academic career. Like most softball players across the Commonwealth, Conger missed her 2020 season due to COVID 19 restrictions. As a sophomore, Conger was third overall at the plate on a Lady Lyon team known for strong hitting.

She had 34 hits on 106 at bats, hitting five home runs and finishing with a .321 average.

On the mound, Conger split time with Allye Culp. She finished with a 3.22 ERA across 100 innings pitched.

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association needs to rethink the way it’s going to handle postseason play in the era of COVID-19.

On Oct. 22, Henderson County’s boys soccer team battled University Heights Academy to a 3-2 decision in the Second Region Tournament. The Colonels earned the win and the right to play in the state tournament. But in the days that followed, according to the team’s social media accounts, Colonels were exposed to “a person that has tested positive for COVID-19.”

Henderson would have played South Warren in the subsectionals. But, according to KHSAA guidelines, the two-week quarantine ended Henderson’s season and effectively gave South Warren a bye into the quarterfinals.

Come on, Kentucky, you’re better than that.

Everyone is having to tackle ‘what ifs’ these days. School administrators and agencies like are tasked with having to come up with solutions for scenarios that seemed unfathomable a year ago.

But the KHSAA has put in place a system where teams could intentionally advance through the postseason without ever winning a game. On Oct. 12, the association said it was committed to seeing the season through, issuing that it would “make all reasonable efforts to accommodate the competing school with rescheduling any contest provided that such rescheduled dates do not adversely affect the next round of the tournament.”

It’s good lip service, but it doesn’t mean much when a 14-day quarantine is flung at the immovable wall of postseason dates. District play, regional play, opening rounds: every step towards a state title has a designated week (or less) of play; a two-week delay just isn’t going to happen.

Which means teams like Henderson have to cancel. And teams like South Warren advance. It’s unlikely, but possible, they’ll advance through the next round due to a cancellation, too.

The question is: how far? Are we going to see a state champion crowned this year that never played beyond a district match?
