Marshall County’s annual softball shootout lived up to its billing as a chance to see top talent squaring off in a variety of matchups. The slate of games kicked off April 12 and wrapped up the next day, with games taking place at Marshall County High School and at Mike Miller Park. In addition to the hosts, other teams taking part were: Trigg County, Spencer County, Muhlenberg County, South Warren, Da-
viess County, Paducah Tilghman, Caldwell County, Graves County, Christian County and Goreville, Illinois. In varsity competition, Marshall County and Goreville both went 2-1 through the weekend, while Caldwell, Spencer and Trigg counties were all 3-1.

Lady Marshals recover after early loss The Lady Marshals opened Slugfest 2019 on a down note, falling 6-3 in extra innings. Despite the loss, Marshall County showed epic determination throughout. Down 1-0 in the seventh inning, Marshall County needed something big to stay in the contest against visiting Goreville, Illinois. Cayson Conner gave them that spark with a triple to right field, then earning the tie run on a single by Riley Piercefield on the next at bat. The two teams kept the bases clean through the next two innings until the top of the ninth when Marshall County pulled ahead by two runs. The effort started with a walk by Presley Jezik. She was joined by Layne Pea, who was hit by the pitcher. Conner provided the needed hit once again during her fourth trip to the plate, scoring Jezik on
a single. Jezik followed, scoring on an infield error for the 3-1 advantage. But Goreville closed the inning down and took the lead in the home half. Goreville used a single to bring in one run, then finished things off with a bases loaded home run. Despite the impressive early defensive effort, the Lady Marshals fell 6-3. Gabbi Lovett took the loss on the mound, striking out three batters across 112 pitches and giving up 12 hits. Conner was 2-for-4 from the plate with one RBI. Piercefield was 1-for-4 with another RBI. Marshall County fared better over the final two games, defeating Spencer County 6-4 and South Warren 5-3. Against Spencer County, Char-
Lady Tigers go 3-1 Katie Franklin gave up just four hits as Caldwell County earned a 1-0 shutout over Paducah Tilghman in their opening Slugfest matchup on April 12. Franklin had a good run on the mound for the Lady Tigers throughout the weekend as they went 3-1. Franklin gave up 18 hits across 427 pitches while striking out 29 batters. Against Tilghman, Madi Choate used a line drive to bring in Allie Felker for the lone run in the second inning. Felker had singled on a 3-2 count to lead off the inning. On April 12, the Lady Tigers bested Daviess County 4-3, earning runs in the fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Mashea Glover was 2-for3 for the Lady Tigers while Haley Stiles was 2-for4. Franklin, Felker, Choate and Karlie Rennison all earned RBIs in the contest. On April 13, the Lady Tigers had a three game win streak come to an end in a 3-2 loss to Grave County. Both teams scored their runs in a frenetic fourth inning. Caldwell shook off the loss, finishing up the weekend with a 7-1 win over Muhlenberg County. Katie Franklin and Emma Staples each notched home runs as the Lady Tigers rallied after trailing 1-0 early in the contest.

Lovett pitched a complete game, striking out one batter and giving up 10 hits in the win. Single score opening and closing innings against South Warren were book ends around a threerun sixth inning that lifted Marshall to a 5-3 win. Pursley was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the contest, while Conner was 1-for3 with two RBI. Lovett struck out two batters in the win.

Graves, Trigg A late rally attempt by the Lady Eagles fell just short in their first game of Marshall County’s Slugfest on April 12.
Playing at Mike Miller Park, Trigg County put together two runs in each of the first two innings to take an early 4-0 lead. Pitcher Hannah Colbert got it started with a double in the bottom of the firs to score Alyssa Southwood and Kara Southwood. The Lady Wildcats used a two run single by Rylee Hendricks in the second to build the lead, scoring Phelan Dossett and Logan Darnall.

It wasn’t until the top of the third that the Lady Eagles earned their first run. Cassidy Payne reached base on an error. She came home on Graves County’s next batter as Bailey Wilson smashed a triple to center field. Wilson remained on third as Trigg County picked up their first out of the inning, but

scored when Alyssa Goree singled on a line drive. The Lady Eagles would leave Goree on first as Trigg County picked up the final two outs. The Lady Wildcats added one more run in the third and another in the fourth to stretch the lead to 7-2. Graves County answered back in the fifth inning, starting with a walk off home run by Laney Shoulta.
Shoulta’s blast over the centerfield wall sparked a solid rally attempt by the Lady Eagles. Goree followed it with a single to get on base, then scoring on a double by Brittany Harrison. Carson Travis was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Harrison scored on a shot by Kristen Wimsatt, pulling within two runs. The Lady Eagles would get no closer as Trigg County got out of the inning with a 7-5 lead intact and kept the bases clean through final two innings.
Hannah Colbert earned the win from the mound, striking out seven batters across 119 pitches, while giving up 12 hits. Colbert led all batters, going 2-for-2 from the plate with three RBI.
Wimsatt was 2-for-3 with one RBI for Graves, while Brittany Harrison was 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Marshall County’s Janiec recognized for leadership and positive attitude
Seth Janiec, of Marshall County, has been chosen to receive the Senior Excellence Award. The recognition is given to a student-athlete who has made significant contributions to the team, represents the attributes of a team player and is positive and displays team leadership. The award is made through the United Soccer Coaches. Selections are to be made based on the following criteria. The student-athlete must: be a high school senior, have made significant contributions to the team, represent the finest attributes of a team player, consistently projects a positive attitude, displays team leadership. Janiec was part of a Marshall County defense that allowed just 26 goals, the fewest in the First Region. Marshall County’s defense was ranked 14th in the state overall and eighth in shutouts in 2018.

Jarred Ashmore tournament returns to Barkley One of Lake Barkley’s longest consecutive bowfishing tournaments returns June 15.
The annual Jarred Ashmore Bowfishing Tournament will kick off at the Lee S. Jones Park in Eddyville. The tournament, started by Andy
Cardwell in memory of his close friend and fellow bowfisherman, is now in its 12th year.
The tournament is free for all participants under the age of 18. Prizes will be awarded to each bowfisher. In previous events, prizes
have included shirts, bows and other gear.
Categories will be divided by age, with a group for participants under 7, one for 8- to 12-year olds and a teen division. Big fish and small fish awards will also be given out.

Lyon County’s 2019 middle school baseball season got underway in mid-March. The team has competed against talented Second Region programs, including Muhlenberg County, Christian County, Hopkinsville, Todd County and Trigg County. Lyon County’s regular season will wrap up May 7 hosting Webster County at the Lee S. Jones Park. They are slated to compete in post season play in Madisonville on May 10-11.

LYON COUNTY sweeps Second Region All ‘A’ baseball, softball tournaments
With a few weeks left in the 2019 season, Lyon County’s baseball and softball programs took a step forward, sweeping the All ‘A’ Second Region Tournament for the first time in school history. It was also the first time for the Lyons to earn the title.

For the Lyons, the road to Owensboro started with wins over Crittenden County (12-4) and Dawson Springs (9-0) before the championship game against University Hieghts Academy (10-6). In subsectional action, the Lyons defeated Murray’s Tigers 5-2 with Gabe Board and Jake Klueppel lifting them up with home runs.
The Lady Lyons, meanwhile, breezed through regional action, outscoring opponents 35-3.
At state, Lyon defeated Hickman County 3-2 in the opening game, but fell to Washington County (6-2) and Louisville Holy Cross (8-1). The Cougars, a central Kentucky powerhouse, were 20-1 following the tournament, their only loss coming to Collins County earlier in the season, and were undefeated in Owensboro.

WKCTC Desean Jones a senior at Mayfield Independent, has announced his intent to play at WKCTC in Paducah in the fall. Jones was second overall in individual scoring this season with 415 points for the Cardinals. He was a factor inside, pulling in 128 rebounds.

Huntingdon College Will Lovins signed a letter of commitment with Huntingdon College to play basketball for the Hawks. A four-year MHS varsity basketball member and team captain his junior and senior year, Lovins has scored over 500 career points. A seventy-percent career free-throw shooter, Lovins was named to the 2019 All District Team and nominated for the 2019 Rex Alexander Award. Lovins is the son of Mike and Kim Lovins, Murray.

JACKSON KELLY Lawrence College
Jackson Kelly, a Paducah Tilghman High School senior, signed a scholarship to play football for Lawrence College in a signing ceremony held at PTHS on April 18. Kelly is a two sport athlete, participating in football and track all four years. Kelly was named to the Paducah Sun All Purchase Football team in 2018. He was named All Western Kentucky Conference in 2017 and 2018.
MARY-KATE VIA Bethel College
Mary-Kate Via, was second in scoring for Paducah Tilghman High School during the 2018 campaign, notching five goals. She was tied for assists with two. Via was a multi-sport athlete, also competing in cross country and cheerleading. She was the 2019 PTHS Basketball Homecoming Queen. She will join her sister Elizabeth Via, also a PTHS graduate, on Bethel’s soccer team.
RODRIGUEZ THOMAS UT Martin
Rodriguez Thomas, has accepted an academic scholarship at UT Martin and will play basketball for the Skyhawks. Thomas led Paducah Tilghman with 426 points in 28 games. He led the team with 3-points shots (60-of-139) and free throws (100-of-117 for 86%). He was second in Tornado rebounding (120).

Murray High School Girl’s Archery Team displays their KHSAA Regional runner up trophy. The girls qualified to move on to state, an honor that is only granted to two teams. Breanna Hayes, a Calloway County High School sophomore, has been selected as one of the top 100 female archers in the state of Kentucky. She was invited to shoot in the “Best of the Bluegrass” charity tournament to raise funds and awareness for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The shoot was held on April 27. Breanne shot a 287/300 at the Kentucky State Tournament placing her 41st out of 3,325 female shooters.
Calloway County High School duo Jacob Hudgin and Dylan Bell took first at the Laker Open on Lake Barkley in April. Marshall County’s Davis Smith and Garrett Hicks (above) took second. The two schools were among 11 competing, with 63 teams and a total of 120 high school anglers. Calloway and Marshall had five teams in the top 10. McCracken and Ohio counties had two each and Christian County one rounding out top finishers.
Former local high school track competitors are making their mark for Murray State University. According to MSU, JaKayla McSwain, a 2018 Hopkinsville graduate, and Sophie Grogan, a 2018 McCracken County High School graduate, moved the bar for MSU in April. McSwain ran a personal best in the 200m with a time of 26.17. Grogan also ran a personal-best time of 2:30.48 in the 800m. MSU was competing at the Austin Peay Invitational. “This is the time of year when we love to see times drop and distances increase and these kids set the tone for the rest of the year,” said head coach Adam Kiesler. “It will be fun to watch when we get to OVC in May.”
Graves County tallied 29 unanswered runs across a pair of games against Ballard Memorial in late April. Drew Montgomery pitched four innings in a 12-0 win, while Caden Green earned two strikes during one inning on the mound. The Eagles allowed just one hit all night. The Eagles had 11 hits as a team in 23 at bats. On the following night, the Eagles used a nine run sixth inning to take a 17-0 win over the Bombers. Drew Cooper led Graves County’s bats, going 2-for-5 with four RBI. Lane Howell was also 2-for-5, driving in three runs. Brandon Richards brought home four runs, going 2-for-4 from the plate. Conner Mills was 3-for-3 with two RBI.
In Paducah, St. Mary hosted Lyon County’s tennis team in April. In individual matches, the Vikings girls netted four wins and the boys picked up two. Results are as follows. Standout Students ALLYE CULP Lyon County High School | A junior at Lyon County High School, Allye Culp has been named a 2019 Governor’s Scholar. Culp received the honor in April. Scholars are chosen based on academic performance, character, interests, talent and overall potential. Participants meet for four days of learning and activities at a state college or university. Culp is a member of the Lady Lyons softball team. Through the first 13 games of the season, Culp had eight starts on the mound, throwing 40 strikes across 42 innings pitched. She is the daughter of Jimmy and Penney Culp.

Many
noteworthy contributions by young competitors come off the field, from community volunteerism to academic achievement. Here are two individuals that exemplify what it means to be a student athlete.
ECHO FALWELL Murray High School | Falwell was one of two Murray students selected to attend the 2019 MHS United Space School, a space and science-based learning initiative affiliated with NASA’s Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. Students from nearly two dozen countries from around the globe participate in the annual twoweek school. In 2018, Falwell played 21 games for the Lady Tigers soccer team as part of a formidable defense. Echo is the daughter Matt and Brittney Falwell.

Last month’s issue of West Kentucky Sports featured a story on the current referee shortage plaguing Kentucky. Unfortunately, just days after the publication came out, a long-time area official was injured in an assault during an AAU basketball game.
The Michigan man — a coach who disagreed with the officiating — was charged with assault. It was as violent as it was unnecessary. It’s an unfortunate reminder of the impact officials, parent and coaches can have on student athletes.
Sports can be used to teach kids a variety of things. It can reinforce good habits and skills, like teamwork, perseverance and sacrifice. On the other hand, it can also instill selfishness, frustration and volatility. Those traits — good or bad — start at home. Children emulate their parents and siblings first and foremost. Their home environment can have a huge impact on how they approach life.
Coaches have that same impact, sometimes more so than a parent as work and outside demands can stretch families thin and reduce time spent together. Youth players look to coaches early on to be role models. Players look to them for guidance and direction both on the field and off. Ever hear someone lamenting how disrespectful kids are these days? How parents need to be tougher on them?
The truth is, as coach Frank Martin of South Carolina University said in a 2017 interview, “Kids haven’t changed. We’ve changed as adults..... Kid’s haven’t changed. Kid’s don’t know anything about anything.”
It’s true. And you don’t have to look any further than youth sports to realize it. Take a coach screaming from the sidelines about bad calls or officiating mistakes. Or one storming the field to speak his mind. What kind of impression does that have on his players?
Are they going to be more likely to disrespect authority and have less appreciation for each other? If you’re a coach or a parent, use that opportunity to help your players be the best person they can be.

A $15 fee per student will be collected. Checks may be made payable to the Marshall County Health Department. This will be the only sports physical date scheduled for the upcoming school year.
