Letter from the Editor Dear Graduates, So, it’s Graduation day.

Some might say today is one of the most important days of our lives, but don’t let that pressure scare you. It’s okay to feel all of the emotions. From excitement for your plans to uncertainty of where you want to go or what you want to do, today is bittersweet. Today might mark the end of schooling for some graduates, or might be just the very first step for others. Whether you’re overjoyed or sad, I suggest you take some time to reflect on your experience here on the Hill.

As I look back on my time at Western, I am greeted by so many fond memories and opportunities. From pomping 24 hours straight with my best friends to creating my first magazine at Cherry Creative, my time on the Hill has been a blessing. I hope that as you reflect, you feel the same way.

After you’ve taken a trip down memory lane, I encourage you to come back to the present and just be. Soak in all of the celebration that today offers, spend time with your friends and family, and enjoy the accomplishment of making it to the end. Here is a quote from one of my favorite movies for you to think about… and yes, it might be about a panda that does kung fu: “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift; that’s why it’s called the present.”

Whatever life throws at you after graduation, remember that your time here has prepared you for anything the world throws your way.

Beyond the Tassel: Sentimental Seniors

When we think about college, we will experience trial and error as we decide on our path, and seniors graduating will reminisce about all the work that has brought them to where they are.

Joselyne Trammell, a graduating senior with a degree in healthcare administration and a minor in psychology, understood from her first year on the hill why her heart called her to this degree.

“Initially, I chose healthcare administration because I knew I wanted to help people, but I also understood that my strengths were not necessarily in direct clinical care,” Trammell said.

She was passionate about helping others, but she knew her capabilities were still growing, which made her question what her job entailed in the real world.

She questioned how the behind-the-scenes of her career worked until she took a class that explained it all for her.

“Long-Term Care course with Professor Melanie Eaton. Through that class, we had the opportunity to tour facilities, interact with administrators and see firsthand what day-to-day life looks like in those environments,” Trammell said.

College offers a glimpse into your future career, showing how you fit into others’ lives and why your role in society matters. At Western Kentucky University, you steadily deepen your understanding of your goals, culminating in a senior moment when everything finally clicks.

“I realized this field would allow me to lead, create meaningful change and solve real problems that impact vulnerable populations,” Trammell said.

Once you find your footing, you start to learn all you can about how to achieve those dreams.

But failure is an inevitable lesson of growth that ultimately pushes us towards our goals.

Hayden Kirchberg, a graduating senior with a degree in accounting, recognizes the mistakes he made at the beginning of his journey at WKU. “One of the biggest mistakes I made was not getting involved sooner. I spent a lot of my first year just focusing on classes and staying in my comfort zone instead of branching out and fully experiencing everything campus had to offer,” Kirchberg said.

Getting involved in campus life can shape your attitude towards college and help you gain insight into skills that will help you succeed. For Kirchberg, it was FIJI, a Greek organization, which allowed him to step out of his comfort zone and pushed him to take a risk within his journey.

“It gave me a sense of belonging and a renewed drive that I hadn’t felt in a long time,” Kirchberg said.

Organizations around campus can be rewarding to your social life. Talking to other students with the same goals and values can help you understand that all students struggle.

For Katie Eversole, a senior graduating with a degree in interdisciplinary studies and a concentration in education, her time at WKU was shaped by both challenges and growth. During her college years, she experienced moments of loneliness, but those experiences ultimately gave her a valuable perspective for the future.

“Get comfortable doing things on your own because you’ll be doing a lot of things alone once you’ve graduated,” Eversole said.

Eversole acknowledges that even though there was a season of isolation, it pushed her to become more independent. In the end, she learned that perseverance is a personal choice; one that carries you to graduation and into the next stage of life.

As students near the end of their college journey, they often reflect on where they began. Lasikka Bruck, a senior graduating with a degree in business management with a concentration in applied data analytics, was a first-generation student determined to be the first in her family to earn a degree.

“I really didn’t have any prior expectations or knowledge of what college would be like. However, I didn’t realize just how much it would take me out of my shell and help me truly find myself,” Bruck said.

For students like Bruck, entering college can feel overwhelming, especially when meeting people from different backgrounds for the first time.

Over time, Bruck realized that college shapes you for the better, helping you grow into adulthood by learning to navigate life independently.

“You don’t have to have everything figured out.

What is meant for you will be yours. You get what you put out, so leave your dorm, go play pool in DSU or picnic on South Lawn,” Bruck said. “Time flies, and it’s the experiences that you’ll miss the most.”

These reflections serve as a reminder that college is a process of growth. As seniors look back on their time at WKU, they recognize that while mistakes were made, those moments didn’t define them; they shaped them into individuals ready to make a positive impact on the world.

“Consistency in how Big Red appears and protecting the character in its image has been one of the main reasons WKU’s mascot has been so successful over the years,” said Ralph Carey, creator of Big Red. From what started as a scribble on a piece of paper to what is now the Big Red everyone knows and loves, Carey said he is grateful to all those who have helped Big Red grow over the years.

“Thank you to all who have put in the time, effort and energy to keep the character alive,” Carey said.

Big Red’s success isn’t only dependent on those who are the mascot, though. The mascot’s success is also dependent on some of the Hilltoppers helping Big Red behind the scenes.

Graduate Kailee Ladwig, who is receiving her

master’s degree in recreational sports administration this spring, is the WKU Dance Team’s Assistant Dance Coach. Ladwig said she began working with Big Red in December 2023 and has helped navigate and manage the program ever since.

Ladwig said she started working with Big Red as an intern for her senior year in graduate school. She said she ended up staying with the department and Big Red’s team because she loved it so much.

Some of Ladwig’s responsibilities as a coordinator included scheduling events, communicating with people on and off campus, sending emails and even washing Big Red’s laundry. She said they never let Big Red wear the same suit twice because he is known for being a “good-smelling” mascot.

“I have people text me at games that they can smell Big Red when they enter,” Ladwig said.

Ladwig said she has had a lot of cool opportunities while working with Big Red’s team and the Athletic Program. She said she has been able to attend the University of Alabama football game, shoot promotional videos of the new football uniforms and Homecoming parades and she attended the Conference USA Basketball Tournament when WKU won.

“That was a lot of fun,” Ladwig said regarding the conference game. “Just in the sense of we let Big Red go around in the stands, and Big Red got to hold the conference trophy.”

Ladwig said she learned from her experience working with Big Red that the best growth in a workplace is to “truly be yourself” and not feel a need to be professional all the time.

“You can never be too fun and silly at work,” Ladwig said.

Ladwig said she has made a lot of connections and some of her best friends through working with Big Red. Anyone planning on joining Big Red’s team should just “do it” because it is “probably the best thing on campus,” Ladwig said.

“I’ve made the most connections and made the best friends,” Ladwig said. “I’ve made all of my memories through Big Red, and I never thought that would be the case ever in my life,” Ladwig said. “And I would never trade it for the world.”

Ladwig said some students are Big Red’s “handlers” who accompany Big Red everywhere. A “handler” is someone who serves as Big Red’s “bodyguard” and assists Big Red when getting in and out of the suit, according to WKU Athletics’ list of Frequently Asked Questions about Big Red. Ladwig said three students work solely as handlers for Big Red, including one student who will be graduating this spring.

Senior Madi Kellen, a health science major with a concentration in pre-physical therapy, said she has worked as one of Big Red’s handlers since April 2024.

Kellen said she originally wanted to audition to be Big Red, but it wasn’t what she expected. After deciding she didn’t want to be Big Red, Kellen said she decided to still be a part of the team as one of Big Red’s handlers. She said everyone who auditioned had the opportunity to be a part of the program in a different way.

“If you’re interested in the program, you’ll be a part of the program whether you’re Big Red or not,” Kellen said.

Kellen’s responsibilities in her role as one of Big Red’s handlers include helping Big Red prepare before an event, setting boundaries between Big Red and fans and assuring everyone follows safety protocols. She said she has accompanied Big Red to a variety of different events over the past two years, including both sporting and personal events.

Kellen said her favorite memory with Big Red was going to a personal event at Mellow Mushroom for a man’s 50th birthday, who claimed to be Big Red’s “number one fan.” Kellen said she was told the party originally consisted of 10 guests, but it ended up becoming a party of four. Kellen and Big Red ended up spending the entire dinner with the family and had fun hanging out for the man’s birthday.

“We both left and were like, ‘That was one of the coolest events,’” Kellen said. “It was literally nothing, but it was so much fun.”

Kellen said she became more of a “people person” while working as one of Big Red’s handlers. She said the position also taught her how to set boundaries with others and adapt to certain situations. She said she enjoyed being around the people at events and having a close relationship with Big Red at the same time.

“I’m definitely going to miss just being able to hang out with Big Red on my own time, being able to do all these events and being able to connect with all of the people involved,” said Kellen.

“I definitely feel like I came back almost as a completely different person,” said senior Joshua Gillespie, a triple major in corporate organizational communication, public relations and political science.

Gillespie said he studied abroad to push himself outside of his comfort zone. He said he wanted to see how he could handle himself without a “safety net” of people around him. Gillespie said he initially felt very isolated and lonely.

He said he had tried to be prepared, but there was “no real way to be completely prepared for the culture shock” of living in another country. Eventually, he became accustomed to the lifestyles and cultures abroad.

“There’s so many things that are out of your control that you can’t really prepare for in advance,” Gillespie said.

Gillespie said he grew not only academically while abroad, but also as an individual.

He was forced to depend on himself for things and test his capabilities while abroad alone.

Gillespie said the “chill moments” with friends, though, were what became some of his best memories abroad.

“I do think maybe some of the most memorable moments were just some of the slow weekends where I was hanging out with the friends that I made while I was in Florence,” Gillepsie said.

“I think Taiwanese food doesn’t really get enough attention,” said senior Chinese Flagship major Zachary Vandermolen, while reflecting on his favorite memories abroad.

Vandermolen said he studied abroad twice in Taiwan; once through a scholarship from the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y), and another time in summer 2025 through a WKU program. Vandermolen said living with a host family abroad gave him a much more “holistic” experience than living in an institution because his host family guided him through what their days look like in the country.

During his NSLI-Y Scholarship, Vandermolen said he lived with his host family in Taiwan for three weeks. He said his host brother, Angus, is now his closest friend. They meet up whenever Vandermolen is visiting the country.

“That’s an experience you can’t really get without a host family,” Vandermolen said.

Vandermolen said that by studying abroad, he has been able to connect with people from all around the world. He said WKU champions diversity, and that’s something he couldn’t get by just staying in Bowling Green.

“It’s really unrivaled,” Vandermolen said.

“That feeling of going out at night with a friend and seeing a completely different world.”

Senior Elana Barker, an environmental, sustainability and geographical studies major, said she got to do “so many amazing things” while studying abroad in Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands in spring 2024.

Barker climbed vo l c a n o e s , spent a week in the Amazon Rainforest, swam with sharks and even met the same giant

tortoises that were on the islands when Charles Darwin visited.

Barker said she didn’t know or speak any Spanish before studying abroad.

Throughout the semester, though, she picked up the language along the way.

“I’m not studying Spanish, but it just ended up being a really great byproduct of my time there,” Barker said.

Barker said the experience abroad shaped her professional, academic and personal goals. She learned a lot about herself and the world, and it gave her a lot of confidence.

“It kind of showed me so many different ways of living that I hadn’t known about,” Barker said.

Senior Kinslei Crouch, an advertising major, said she was “fortunate enough” to travel with friends both times she studied abroad in Europe.

In summer 2024, Crouch studied abroad in Florence, Italy, at the Lorenzo de’ Medici Institute. In summer 2025, Crouch studied abroad again in London, England, through the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS).

Crouch said she received multiple scholarships through the Student Government Association, the Mahurin Honors College and WKU Global.

She said the scholarships made both experiences very affordable.

Crouch advised those thinking of studying abroad not to write it off until they have at least done the research and looked at different options.

“It’s such a growing experience for you as a person to just have to manage that on your own and really pay attention, even to currency,” Crouch said.

Landry Steenbergen, a public relations major, said she often drank Yorkshire Tea with her host family while studying abroad at Harlaxton College in spring 2025.

“I had a host family that I loved dearly, so we would go over there every Wednesday night and watch movies, eat popcorn, eat dessert and drink tea,” Steenbergen said.

Life was slower and more refreshing in England than in the United States, Steenbergen said.

“It was just the best because everything in England, the way that we lived, everything was just slower than it is here, and I just loved that so much,” Steenbergen said.

Steenbergen said it was very easy to travel in Europe.

She had the opportunity to travel to nine different places while in England, including Florence, Rome, France, Ireland and Scotland.

She said she relied on her faith while traveling, and also had to rely on her classmates to be her support system while she was halfway across the world.

“You just learn a lot about yourself, and I definitely think that my last year at WKU was a lot different because I studied abroad,” Steenbergen said.

Several graduates are showing their pride by getting creative with their grad caps.

Cameron ElliotMoody, a journalism major from Nashville, Tennessee is decorating his cap with a star

theme. Moody said he always knew he wanted to decorate his graduation cap because it is something that is valuable to him.

“It says ‘Star of the Show’. The reason I chose that is because I am the first person in my family in a long time to graduate college. This i s a big milestone for me,” Moody said.

Moody said his family is his biggest support system, and they have always seen him as someone who is going to do great things.

Candace Baker, a dental hygiene major from Russellville, Ky., said that she is a very crafty person.

“Painting has always been a hobby of mine. It’s a way for me to share my talent with friends and family.

Finding small crafts to do has always been my stress reliever throughout my college years,” Baker said.

“Being able to decorate my grad cap means the world to me. I am glad we get to show our personalities through decorating our caps. I want my cap to be a reflection of my goals when I graduate. I am excited to see what my future holds,” Baker said.

Kallie Powell, advertising major, from Monticello, Ky., shares a passion for baking and cooking.

Powell said after graduation, she hopes to be in the world of sports.

“I would say I am a pretty creative person. I enjoy letting out my artistic abilities in any way possible. I decorated my cap for high school graduation to honor my grandparents because they passed before they could see me graduate,” Powell said.

Powell said she is going to decorate her cap a little differently for college graduation.

Her decor will reflect her passion for baking and cooking, which she got from her grandparents.

Powell plans to create a 3D cake for her cap and suggests that you start planning early.

“Start making that Pinterest board now, that’s where I got my ideas from. I started my Pinterest board last semester.

Just try and figure out what is best for you,” Powell said. “Talk to other grads, bounce ideas off of each other. It helps.”

Ingredients: 1 lime, halved 2 tbsp. sugar 1 cup sweetened cranberry juice 1 bottle of champagne 12 fresh cranberries 4 small sprigs fresh rosemary

Directions: Step 1 Line champagne flutes with lime and dip in sugar. Pour 1/4 cup cranberry juice into each glass and top with champagne.

Step 2 Use a toothpick to poke a hole through cranberries.

Thread rosemary skewer through cranberries and garnish mimosas.
