Editor’s Letter
Dear Graduates,
Congratulations, you made it!
Today marks years of hard work, growth and perseverance. It’s a moment to celebrate not just what you’ve accomplished, but who you’ve become along the way. Each of us has earned this, and you deserve to feel every ounce of pride, joy and love that surrounds you right now.
Most of us arrived on the Hill unsure of who we were or what we wanted to become. But in the classrooms, late-night study sessions, and moments of doubt and discovery, we found our way. We made lifelong friends. We created memories that will always bring us back to this place. We’ve grown in ways we probably didn’t even notice until now.
We’ve seen WKU grow alongside us, too. We said goodbye to Tate Page Hall and Garrett Conference Center. We were the first to call Regents and Normal Halls home. We watched Northeast Hall become Munday Hall. Hilltopper Hall, once buzzing with life, now stands quiet. We’ve watched the new Gordon Ford Business College rise from the ground up, one beam at a time. With the conference center gone and the Commons still under construction, we spent our lunch breaks grabbing food from trucks, eating at the Colonnade and on the sidewalks. It was at times muddy and cold, but the Que Pasa cheesy rice was always worth it.
Through it all, we’ve learned that change isn’t something to fear. It’s something that helps us grow. We’ve figured out who we are, little by little, day by day. While we might not have all the answers yet, we’re leaving here with confidence in who we’re becoming.
As you step into what’s next, remember that everyone’s path looks a little different. Don’t rush to compare yours to someone else’s. Stay true to who you are and what matters most to you. Hold onto the people who made this chapter meaningful, the professors who encouraged you, the friends who stuck by you, and the memories that shaped you.
To the families, friends, and mentors who supported us, thank you for being part of our journey. To the Class of 2025, I’m proud to be one of you. You’ve challenged me, inspired me, and reminded me how lucky we are to be Hilltoppers. And to WKU, thank you for giving us a place to learn, to grow and to belong.
Sincerely,
Nicole Johnson Creative Director

The Results...
The Overachiever (Mostly As)
Usain Bolt could not have run faster to grad school.
You were applying to grad schools before midterms were over. You’re already deep in readings, running a research study, and correcting grammar over text. You’re basically one coffee-fueled paper away from becoming a professor. People will catch you studying in the library this summer even though your classes haven’t started.
The Hustler (Mostly Ds)
Starts making money and immediately lets people know.
Your LinkedIn is spotless, your work bag is more expensive than your rent. You’ve had a job lined up since junior year, and now you’re working 9-5, eating power lunches, and captioning your Insta photos “Grind mode: ON.” You’re already saying things like “quarterly projections” and “let’s circle back.” People kinda despise you, but also … respect.
The Traveler (Mostly Bs)
Did not hesitate to leave the country — or at least the state.
You saw your diploma and said, “Now it’s soul-searching time.” You’re backpacking through Europe, couchsurfing in Tokyo, and road-tripping across the US. Basically, you turned your gap year into a personality trait. You have stories about “this one time in Spain” and somehow always have Wifi to post about it.
The
Nostalgic (Mostly Es)
Already missing college … like, a lot.
You’ve made a finsta for throwbacks and have alumni events circled in your calendar. You’re still in the GroupMe and low-key trying to organize a friend reunion even though graduation was last week. You wear your college hoodie every day and might actually cry if someone mentions Fresh Food Company. You’re a sweet, sentimental soul who peaked in college — or maybe just really loved it.
The Homebody (Mostly Cs)
Goes straight home to the fam, picks up work, and starts living life slowly.
You’re catching up on sleep, saving money, and baking cookies with your mom. You’ve reclaimed your childhood bedroom (but redecorated) and have a solid part-time job or are just regrouping. You might have a little existential dread, but it’s nothing some fuzzy socks and sleepy cat pics can’t fix.
The Rebooter (Mostly Fs)
You’re taking a break. No plans. Just vibes and slow healing.
You just need a minute (or a year). No five-year plan, no resume updates; just rest and a little therapy. Someone might find you journaling in a coffee shop, doing yoga in the park, or starting a skincare blog. No one knows what you’re doing next — you don’t either — but you’re OK with that. It’s like burnout recovery, but make it chic.
Imposter No More: Combating Imposter Phenomenon
Story by Hayley Barton | Photo Illustration by Hanna Kronfeld
Imposter phenomenon, formerly known as imposter syndrome, affects many students in college and graduates as they enter their careers. Monica Burke, a professor in the counseling and student affairs department, has indepth knowledge of the subject.
Imposter phenomenon is the belief that the success you have is not deserved.
Burke said that people who have imposter phenomenon do not give themselves credit for everything they have done and think they are deceiving the people around them. She said it’s now referred to as a phenomenon, rather than a syndrome, to make clear that if a person is feeling thoughts of an imposter, there is not something wrong with them.
Imposter phenomenon can present itself more during transition periods, such as when students are graduating and entering a new job. Negotiating salaries is especially difficult due to the tendency to undervalue their skillset. Burke said people who tend to put a
lot of pressure on themselves can be affected by this. When they feel like they are not achieving enough, their negative self-talk will grow and make the cycle continue.
“We all have this self-talk loop, and sometimes negativity comes in too, and your eternal voice tells you they’re going to find out that you’re not as good as you are,” Burke said. “It has this psychological impact; it can lead to chronic self-doubt; you can be fearful of being exposed. This can lead to them being very perfectionistic.”
Since the people who suffer from this phenomenon are always worried about being “found out” or their luck running out, it can also lead to anxiety and depression. It can take a toll mentally, physically, and emotionally. Burke said the chronic self-doubt can lead to burnout and overwork.
Imposter phenomenon can affect marginalized students especially because some people suggest that they only got to where they are at due to their race, disability or gender. Burke
said that can lead to feelings of being undervalued.
“It can add another level of stress because you believe they think that you did not get this job because of your hard work or because of my grades or what I have done,” Burke said. “They’re going to think I got this because of fill in the blank.”
While people cannot necessarily get ahead of the imposter phenomenon, they can try not to get dragged into the depths of it. Burke gave a few ways to help tackle the imposter phenomenon.
One strategy is for people to say one positive thing to themselves in the mornings. Another strategy is keeping all accomplishments or positive notes people have written in a visible spot as a reminder of success. Having a healthy relationship, whether that be a friendship or romantic relationship, can also help people stay positive by having someone to remind them of their accomplishments when they’re feeling down.
Webster County freshman Ella Oakley struggles with feelings that she doesn’t belong, but she pushes through and overcomes.
The stories behind student tattoos Inked Decision
Story by Irina Boarman | Photos by Myah Griffin
While some people regret the tattoos they get in college, others love them for the experience and memories. A few students reflected on their tattoos and the importance behind them.
Allison Sadler
Senior Allison Sadler has gotten three tattoos since starting college. She got her first two in South Korea while studying abroad in 2023. Sadler saw a tattoo artist on Instagram and decided it would be a fun story to get a tattoo in Korea. She had to go through multiple channels to get in touch with the artist because tattooing is illegal in South Korea. When scheduling the appointment, she was told that she wouldn’t receive the location until the day of the tattoo.
“I went there, and it was this shady-looking Korean
building,” Sadler said. “I buzzed in, and they were like ‘Who you gonna see?’ so I showed them the artist’s Instagram. They said OK and began to unlock several locks.”
Since the artist didn’t speak much English, Sadler spent three or four hours lying in silence as she got a snake-like tattoo.
“I got up, and it was a really badass tattoo,” Sadler said. “I went back a month or two later to get a sparrow on my other arm.”
After returning to Bowling Green, Sadler got a white pony tattoo at Permanent Paint in honor of Deftones, her favorite band.
“My fiance and I went to San Francisco to see Deftones at Golden Gate Park,” Sadler said. “I had my first mosh pit there, my first ever metal show, and it was insane. Then I got proposed to that night. Now I have this tattoo.”
Allison Sadler’s snake-like tattoo is a product of experiences and memories during her time at WKU.
Morgan Larkins
Sophomore Morgan Larkins got her first tattoo the day after turning 18. Larkins got the angel number 333 tattooed on her bicep, while her sister has 444 in the same place. Angel numbers are typically a sequence of numbers repeated, believed to have a spiritual connection to them. Larkins also has a moth on her other bicep.
“I was really happy and doing really well mentally,” Larkins said. “I was like, ‘I’ll always find light in the dark.’”
Larkins also had a smashed penny on her ribs. The souvenir penny says “Kentucky, the Bluegrass State” with a horse on it.
“I was born in Kentucky. I’ll always have a place here,” Larkins said. “Also when I was little, we collected smashed pennies. My parents have three smashed penny books. I love them.”
Miriam Story
Graduate student Miriam Story said her most embarrassing tattoo is her lucky cat. The cat, located on her bicep with a One Direction lyric underneath, was done in her freshman year of college. When getting the tattoo, the design was slightly different than the final product. Halfway through the tattoo, the artist began coloring in the eyes of the cat.
“He was like, ‘I just don’t think the original design would
work’ and I’m like OK then,’” Story said. “I get compliments on it, but it’s still not my favorite. At least they are good memories.”
The next tattoo Story got was John Steinbeck’s logo with a quote translating to “stars on the wings of a pig.” Story felt the need to mark her obsession with Steinbeck permanently, while also showing off her status as an English major.
Story later got a ghost tattoo during a Halloween flash sale. Gus the Ghost reminded her of the ghost from Scooby-Doo. She had gone back to the same tattoo artist who did her lucky cat and Steinbeck tattoos. The artist took multiple smoke breaks during the appointment, causing Story to switch artists after getting the ghost.
“I was too anxious to book an appointment with a new person,” Story said. “I trusted his line work more than his shading. I wanted to get another one from him, but just never ended up doing so.”
Story’s favorite tattoo is one of Saint Sebastian. He was used as a metaphor in her favorite book, “Confessions of a Mask.”
The saint allowed for the main character to discover his sexuality, while Story was also coming to terms with her own sexuality. She got the painting from the book tattooed, with her favorite flower to cover where the painting abruptly ends.
“My favorite flower is a blue hydrangea, so I wanted those to be in color,” Story said. “I get a lot of compliments on it. He’s gorgeous.”
Slaughters, Kentucky, sophomore Morgan Larkins said that her tattoos are sentimental, representing things she cares about.
Russell Springs, Kentucky, graduate student Miriam Story, said that although some tattoos aren’t her favorite anymore, there are still good memories behind each of them.

Where Should You Take Grad Photos?
Story by Emily Arnett | Photos by Summer Crawford
As the semester ends and graduation looms, WKU seniors started to take their graduation photos all over campus.
Presley Garrett, a senior from Greenville, Kentucky, said that it is important that seniors get graduation photos.
“College for me has been a home away from home, filled with friendships, experiences and personal growth,” Garrett said.
Garrett said graduation photos capture seniors in the most important places to them, like favorite buildings on campus or with friends. She said she wants to look back on these photos someday to share her college experience with her future children.
Garrett said she took her graduation photos by the Academic Complex and at Van Meter Hall. She posed by the Academic
Complex because she is a part of the College of Health and Human Services.
“I’m a public health major, so I spent a lot of time in that building,” Garrett said.
Garrett said she posed at Van Meter Hall because of the scenery and architecture of the building.
“I took the ones by Van Meter because it was so pretty, and I love the columns,” Garrett said.
Garrett said she also plans on taking more senior photos, joined by her friends at their freshman dorm, Pearce Ford Tower, and at the Colonnade. After taking her photos, Garett said she advises soon-to-be graduates to take a friend to get graduation photos to make things more comfortable.
Presley Garrett, Senior, Greenville, Kentucky
Mya Desbien, a senior from Clarksville, Tennessee, said that she thinks it is important to get graduation photos.
“I think we work so hard for these degrees,” Desbien said. “It’s been the hardest thing I’ve ever done, and I think it’s so important to have the pictures to look back on and remember what an accomplishment this is.”
Desbien said she also posed for her senior photos at the Academic Complex.
“I am a part of the College of Health and Human Services, so I feel like that represents my academic journey while I’ve been here at WKU,” Desbien said.
Desbien said she also took photos at the Colonnade.
“I think this is just one of the prettiest places on campus, especially to take pictures,” Desbien said.
Desbien has also taken senior photos at Van Meter Hall and
the small bridge in the middle of campus. She said she used props that correlated to her nursing major, like wearing her scrubs and posing with her stethoscope and textbooks.
Desbien advises future graduates taking photos to find a great photographer who makes you feel comfortable.
Freshman Taylor Koch from Paris, Kentucky, said that senior photos are a good way to capture milestones in your life.
Koch also said that as a journalism major in Potter College of Arts and Letters, she wants to take photos in front of Jody Richards Hall and Cherry Hall and include her friends because of their support throughout her academic journey.
“I think it’s a good idea for students to take photos in front of a building where they spend most of their time,” Koch said via text.
“I think we work so hard for these degrees, it’s been the hardest thing I’ve ever done, and I think it’s so important to have the pictures to look back on and remember what an accomplishment this is.”

The listing of a name in this publication should not be construed as an indication that the person will in fact receive a degree from WKU at this commencement. Conversely, the absence of a student’s name from this list does not necessarily mean that the person will not be awarded a degree. The students whose names appear within made formal application for graduation by the date specified in the academic calendar. Graduates who achieved clearance after April 16 are not included in this publication.
