Western Kentucky University’s First LEED Building A Growing University Strikes Gold PROJECT BACKGROUND

This new facility was designed for the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences and replaced an existing outdated building that no longer met the needs of these programs.

Located on Western Kentucky University’s main campus in Bowling Green, Kentucky, the building was designed to be a signature facility for the campus.

A TOOL FOR LEARNING

In addition to a clear, efficient internal layout, this new building is a tool for learning, and incorporates the latest classroom technology and an abundance of natural light throughout.

Classrooms, conference areas, an auditorium, a media resource center, psychology research laboratories, faculty offices and clinic spaces were all designed to support varied teaching and learning styles and to support the exploration and development of varied teaching pedagogies.

In addition, outdoor social and learning spaces were fully integrated into the design of the building. Featuring a classical architecture aesthetic, this facility celebrates Western Kentucky University’s rich history as an institution of higher learning while creating new, state-of-theart spaces dedicated to teaching and the educational process.

STRATEGIES AND RESULTS

Strategies to achieve LEED Gold included: • access to public transportation • bicycle storage and changing rooms • reflective coating on roof and parking lots to reduce heat island effect • water efficient landscaping and low flow plumbing fixtures • optimized energy performance • recycled content and regional materials • low emitting (VOC) adhesives, paints, carpets, and furnishings for improved air quality

Ransdell Hall is a $23.6 million, 120,000-square-foot new facility on Western Kentucky University’s campus. Home to the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences, the building was named after the University’s ninth president.

CHAPTER PROJECT PROFILE WESTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY – MUSIC HALL

The Second LEED Facility in Two Years WKU Demonstrates Continued Commitment to Sustainable Design PROJECT BACKGROUND

In 2001, the National Association of Schools of Music’s accreditation review identified a need for improved facilities for the choral program, and the Music Department immediately set to work. After nearly a decade of steady fundraising progress, the University broke ground in July 2010 on a new home for the Music Department designed to transform the educational experience for current students and infuse the program with new recruits.

A NEW HOME FOR THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT

Western Kentucky’s new Music Hall is a three-story building featuring both instrumental rehearsal and choral rehearsal spaces. It features five faculty offices, three graduate assistant offices, three performance music libraries (orchestra, band and choir), storage areas for the Big Red Marching Band’s instruments and uniforms, and a grand, vaulted commons area.

A variety of storage spaces are also included in the building for instruments and uniforms, percussion, jazz, and choral riser storage. Student lockers and chair and stand storage are also included in the design. The new building also features a large elevator sized to accommodate a five-octave marimba.

STRATEGIES AND RESULTS

Located on a karst site, the building features an aggressive stormwater management system that uses a 40,000-gallon aquifer beneath the building’s driveway to treat storm water. Lowflow plumbing fixtures were used to minimize water consumption. Low-VOC construction materials were specified to protect air quality and regional and recycled building materials were used whenever possible throughout the building. A shower was installed to encourage bicycle transportation. Windows provide views outdoors and infuse daylight into all regularlyoccupied areas of the building. A white roof reduces the heat-island effect and minimizes the building’s burden on the energy-efficient mechanical system.

ABOUT WESTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY MUSIC HALL

The 25,000 square foot Music Hall opened in January 2012. It features two large, acoustical, state-of-the-art rehearsal halls that have quickly become a home for not only the music majors on the Hill, but for many other students who participate in the twenty ensembles that are available for membership.

CHAPTER PROJECT PROFILE WESTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY – AUGENSTEIN ALUMNI CENTER

A Sustainable Building Welcomes Alumni Home The New Face of Western Kentucky University PROJECT BACKGROUND Western Kentucky University sought a new home for its Alumni Association staff and a central location for alumni activities. The new Alumni Center is the face of WKU, offering an inviting atmosphere as a social and logistical headquarters for students as they return to campus. The space also serves as a hub for prospective students.

The first floor of the building consists of a conference center, ballrooms, and a small museum providing visitors a history of the University. A double-height atrium serves as the main gathering space, linking the conference center on the first floor with the main alumni center space on the second level. An executive auditorium, board room, elegant dining room, parlor and sitting rooms are also located on the second floor. In addition, the second floor houses a phonathon space, lounge, and small library of alumni yearbooks and other memorabilia.

WKU’s Alumni Association staff utilizes the third floor for office and administrative space.

STRATEGIES AND RESULTS The building has been designed in a traditional style that reflects the architectural language of the rest of the campus and takes its cues from the classical architectural elements of adjacent campus buildings. Windows are highly-efficient, insulated, double-glazed panels in thermally broken aluminum clad wood frames. A white, PVC membrane roof minimizes solar heat gain.

Ceramic tile and broadloom carpet throughout the building are all comprised of renewable resources. Low-emitting paints, adhesives, sealants, floorings, and materials with recycled content were specified throughout the building whenever possible. The building is also located along a new University Bicycle Pathways Improvement Project, which it supports with dedicated bicycle parking and an employee shower to encourage staff to bike to work.

ABOUT WESTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY AUGENSTEIN ALUMNI CENTER The Augenstein Alumni Center is a place that brings the history and traditions of the University to life and instills the WKU Spirit in future generations of Hilltoppers.

The Alumni Center is located at the corner of Center and 14th Streets on the WKU Campus in Bowling Green. It provides elegant and comfortable space for visiting alumni and the WKU community to hold meetings, social events, and educational programs. Many functions are accommodated in a variety of venues accessible to virtually any size audience.

The Alumni Center also houses the Office of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving, the Office of Advancement Services and the WKU Foundation.
