PRINCEVILLE SHOWCASES $8.2 MILLION UPGRADE

URBANA – Although crop condition reports and yield prospects for the 2016 Illinois corn crop continue to be good, there has been recent discussion about unfilled ear tips and whether or not this might mean lower yields than the appearance of the crop leads us to believe, says a University of Illinois crop scientist. Corn ears with kernels missing at the outer end of the ear are often said to have “tip-back.” “The term is a little obscure, but the idea is that something happened to cause the ear to adjust its kernel number downward so it won’t have as many kernels to fill. YATES CITY – The Village Board on Aug. 10 unanimously approved the purchase of a 2017 Ford Utility Police Vehicle for about $29,000 from Yemm in Galesburg, replacing a 2007 vehicle with 70,000 miles. State-bid consideration and local work on items such as reinstalling the car computer brought down the price from more than $35,000. The SUV is expected to be delivered in 60 to 120 days, according to Police Chief Randy Benson. Meanwhile, work on a tile between Maple and Vaughn streets was completed for the moment and payment of about $6,600 was approved for Kevin Windish of Otto Max Trucking and Excavating in Edwards. Work that last summer delayed the start of school and forced major adjustments for parents, teachers and students throughout the year has been completed in time for Wednesday’s first day of the 2016-17 year. “There are still a few loose ends to tie up, but I’m definitely more focused on school instead of babysitting construction workers, which was my other job last year,” Princeville High School Principal Rich Thole said. last Thursday, when Princeville unveiled its remodeled building to accolades from members of the public who attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony. “We did our ribbon-cutting and had quite a few people from the community come in and I got the impression overwhelmingly that people were extremely impressed and excited about the opportunities the kids are going to have moving forward,” Thole said. The $8.2 million project includes a new 13,720-square-foot gymnasium with seating capacity for nearly 1,400, new boys and girls locker rooms, a 9,100square-foot addition for six new classrooms to be used by students in grade 6-8, new bathrooms and renovations throughout the Junior/Senior High School.
