25 QUESTIONS FOR A JEWISH MOTHER

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE_________________________________________________________________ What I have learned about Jewish mothers is that there is no such thing as a stereotypical Jewish mother. In the hands of Diane Flacks this lovely piece is funny, poignant and thought provoking. While WJT is not back to presenting live theatre just yet, the performances of these 10 Jewish mothers (and 2 via zoom) gathered around a table in the Berney Theatre is something to behold. It was so wonderful to be sitting around a communal table with people other than family members, talking, laughing, and listening. We learned a lot about each other as mothers and also about the Jewish mothers we portrayed in the play. We are dedicating this play and the season to our friend and long time board member Judith Putter, may her memory be blessed. Enjoy the show, Miriam Kohn Board President Winnipeg Jewish Theatre

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE______________________________________________________ This play is a love letter that speaks to the very heart of our community: Jewish Mothers. To truly celebrate the spirit of Jewish motherhood and community we have ten wonderful Winnipeg Jewish mothers sharing the stage/screen with the incredible Diane Flacks. There is humour, pathos, talent, and love overflowing in this production, we are so delighted to share it with you. We went digital to produce a production of this size and scope during the pandemic. We followed health and safety protocols meticulously to ensure the show was filmed safely. Up next, we return once again to live theatre at the Asper Jewish Community Campus. Live theatre is at the heart of what we do at WJT, it’s the most thrilling way to fulfill our mandate of illuminating the Jewish experience. We have some incredible stories lined up for you as we return to live performances, and we are always so grateful to have you in the seats to see them. Finally, on September 19, Judith Putter passed away. Judith was the Board President when I started at WJT. She led the search to hire new leadership for the company after its challenges and was the one who called to tell me I got the job. Judith was a fount of knowledge about WJT. She cared so much for the organization, believed fervently in its mission, and was deeply invested in its success. Without Judith’s dedication, determination, and passion, I wouldn’t be writing to you today. After her term as Board President, she remained as Treasurer until January 2019. She worked tirelessly to ensure WJT would be able to flourish. The fact that WJT is here, financially sound, and artistically strong amid the pandemic is very much because of Judith’s hard work and tenacity. So, it seems very fitting to dedicate the 2021 - 2022 season to Judith’s memory. After all, the season is called Strength, Spirit, and Soul, all traits Judith possessed, and why her memory will always be a blessing to me. Sincerely, Ari Weinberg Artistic and Managing Director, Winnipeg Jewish Theatre

This sounds simple enough, but after not being able to visit the homes of loved ones over the pandemic, the act of gathering, sharing stories and eating together becomes profound. This play was written for and is usually performed by Judy Gold herself. In our production, the incomparable Diane Flacks is your host. She joins ten of our own Winnipeg Jewish Mothers around the dining room table to share Judy’s journey through stories, jokes, her faith and some big questions about motherhood. Our mothers shared the verbatim monologues and experienced the play with Diane for the first time as we filmed it. We watched as they listened for their question to be asked and as they broke out into spontaneous laughter or tears. As storytellers we all got to feel again what it means to gather together; to take off the mask and breath the same air; to open our hearts and minds to human connection. Now, we welcome you to join us at the table and share in the power of community. With love, Krista Jackson & Angelica Schwartz Director & Associate Director
