Salvete mea amici!

Historians Note

My name is Sonia Zacharias, and I have had the honor of serving as this year’s WJCL Historian. As everyone knows by now, this past year has been completely unexpected. When considering a theme for this scrapbook, I reflected on the 2021 NJCL convention quote, “Each harvests one’s own farm.” I couldn’t help but think that while we are all individuals striving towards many different goals, we are also all community members who have been challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic. We have learned how to come together to support each other and connect in new ways. We have been working hard to defeat the Covid-19 pandemic and the challenges that come with it just as the classical greek heroes defeated monstrous mythical creatures. In many ways, heroes are defined by the manner in which they respond to problems. This scrapbook will feature a number of mythical creatures whose stories relate to events and obstacles we have encountered this year. Although all of these creatures were significant threats, the heroes were able to defeat them in the end.

The minotaur is a monster who was known to live in a giant labyrinth created by Daedalus. At times, this year felt like navigating an impossible maze with everchanging rules and regulations. Despite this, the WJCL board persisted and sought out inclusive opportunities to connect.

Nationals 2020

According to Greek mythology, the hydra was a serpentine monster with many heads. When one head was cut off, two more heads grew in its place. When COVID-19 initially hit, we thought quarantining for a few weeks would improve the situation, but more and more problems arose as we continued into the pandemic. At many times it has felt like our difficulties have multiplied, the WCJL & NJCL worked hard to find solutions to the unexpected problems that arose this year.

General Assemblies The Chimaera is a fire-breathing monster who was killed by Bellerophon and Pegasus only when they worked together. In the same way, the WJCL officers collaborated in order to organize the first online state convention after the inperson convention was cancelled. With everyone's contributions we were still able to make convention fun.

Pegasus is a winged horse who served Bellerophon and Zeus for many years. Like Pegasus, the WJCL chapters participated in various service events throughout the year to benefit their communities. Although volunteering opportunities were limited this year due to COVID-19, WJCL members found a way to serve.

Over 100 books were donated !
