The Washington Jesuit Academy began our legacy in 2002 with just 20 students. Now, in 2024, we have 140 enrolled students and ambitious plans to expand our services to even more deserving young men. With these plans to serve more students, including those from under-resourced communities, we need to scale our resources to respond to future needs.
We are so excited to announce the launch of our monthly recurring giving society, The 900 Club! For $75 a month for 12 months, members will reach $900 total a year – reflecting the location of our beloved campus on 900 Varnum Street. Recurring gifts from The 900 Club provide a foundation for long-term planning, ensuring we have the resources to equip sports teams, clubs, and activities like field trips and special guests — turning dreams into reality.
Recurring gifts provide a reliable, ongoing source of funding that allows our talented and dedicated staff to plan and consistently meet the needs of our students. This steady support ensures that we can continue providing high-quality education, extracurricular activities, meals, and other critical services that empower our students. WJA’s growth is due, in no small part, to the generosity of our beloved supporters. Through The 900 Club, younger generations are embracing a culture of philanthropy, ensuring the WJA mission continues to thrive for years to come.

“To my kind and generous Sponsors - what a sacrifice! Thank you! Your generosity and your commitment to sponsor me has helped make me become the person I am today. For that, I am deeply grateful. Thank you all for choosing to be the change that we all wish to see.”

The Next Generation
Why support WJA?
Supporting WJA is about changing lives through the power of a great education. These young men face countless challenges, and WJA provides the care, structure, and resources they need to reach their full potential. My own Catholic education taught me the importance of service, community, and strong values. It gave me opportunities to grow, which shaped my sense of purpose and responsibility. Knowing firsthand how much a Catholic education can impact a person’s life, it’s incredibly rewarding to help provide these same opportunities to young men who might not otherwise have access to them.
What inspired you to join The 900 Club?
I love that my monthly gift, even if it seems small, has such a direct and meaningful impact on students’ lives. It feels good to know I’m part of their success, whether it’s in the classroom, on the field, or beyond. WJA isn’t just providing an education; it’s building a legacy, and I’m grateful to be part of that journey helping shape future leaders and changemakers.
Can you describe the feeling of knowing your support directly impacts the lives of WJA students?
Seeing the impact WJA has on its students and alumni has been my favorite part. Watching them grow and thrive makes me feel like I’m part of something much bigger—a community committed to their success and wellbeing.
How do you think your contributions are helping young men at WJA pursue their dreams and achieve their goals?
WJA offers holistic support that helps students grow into well-rounded, compassionate adults. It’s about more than academics—it’s about giving these young men opportunities and hope that lasts a lifetime.
What has been the most fulfilling part of being a member of The 900 Club so far?
The most fulfilling part has been seeing how my contribution helps students grow and succeed. I believe in the power of a WJA education to change lives, and it feels great knowing my monthly gift directly supports our student’s success. Plus, I love the community of WJA supporters—it feels like I see so many old friends and make valuable new connections at events like the Spring Soiree.
Annie Virostek, inaugural 900 Club member.
“I support WJA because it’s a place where my family’s values are reflected.”
If someone was considering joining The 900 Club, what would you tell them about the impact they can make?
I’d say go for it! The 900 Club supports experiences like clubs, sports, and field trips—opportunities that help students grow into well-rounded individuals. When you support WJA, you’re giving a student the chance to be seen, valued, and feel capable of achieving their dreams.
Getting the chance to give back to something that means so much to me is incredibly rewarding. While I may not be able to sponsor a student or join a sponsor group at this point in my career, I still want to give back and support a mission I care deeply about. It’s important to get in the habit of giving back, even in smaller ways – The 900 Club gives me the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to something bigger than myself. It’s such a blessing to know that I can grow right alongside WJA and help ensure a brighter future for students, alumni, and their families.
Financials
Philanthropic support fuels the Washington Jesuit Academy’s tuition-free model. Our community members make our work possible, as contributions generated through fundraising activities account for 90% of WJA’s organizational revenue each year.
WJA leverages diverse funding sources so we can further strengthen our capacity and advance our mission. We are committed to maximizing the impact of the philanthropic support we receive by ensuring strong financial stewardship and continuously investing in our comprehensive programming for both students and alumni.
Honor Roll
Gifts to the Washington Jesuit Academy ensure we can continue to advance educational equity for young men from under-resourced communities in the DC metropolitan region. In total, over 1,185 donors made over 1,960 gifts to WJA during our fiscal year 2024, helping us raise more than $4,670,000 in annual operating to support our mission. Additionally, four benefactors contributed just over $900,000 towards WJA’s Lower School renovation, preparing us for future enrollment expansion and creating a unique space for our youngest learners. In total, fiscal year 2024 realized $5,572,000 in fundraising revenue.
Whether through sponsoring a student, contributing to our Impact Fund, participating in WJA events, or giving as members of our Varnum Society, Magis Legacy Society, or new 900 Club, our donors’ generosity makes a lasting difference in the lives of our students and alumni
Our foundation and corporate partners’ support, our volunteers’ time and talent, and our community partners’ collaborative efforts further enhance WJA’s comprehensive approach to education.
WJA is deeply grateful for all those who join us in our commitment to supporting our students “from 4th grade through a lifetime.” We are pleased to recognize their contributions.

A Legacy of Giving Back
For Bill Licamele and Michael Karam, the Washington Jesuit Academy’s power to change lives stems from our commitment to the Jesuit principle of cura personalis –“care of the whole person.” As graduates of Jesuit schools themselves, Bill (Fairfield College Preparatory School ’64, Georgetown University ’68, Georgetown University School of Medicine ’72) and Michael (Georgetown University ’72, Georgetown University Law Center ’76 and ’81) both have a deep appreciation for cura personalis. WJA’s emphasis on character formation, holistic growth, and becoming “Men for Others” has led Bill and Michael to support WJA for many years and inspired them to make a lasting difference through planned gifts to WJA.
“Planned giving is about planning for your future and your family’s future while finding ways to make a significant philanthropic impact. It is about building a legacy of giving back.”
– Bill Licamele
When Bill and his wife, Annamarie, first learned about WJA, they were impressed by our comprehensive approach, including our extended-day, extended-year schedule, our healthy meals program, and our high level of family engagement. Similarly, Michael and his late wife, Linda Morgan, saw how providing holistic support and introducing young men to Jesuit values during the pivotal middle school years was creating an outsized impact in our community by positively shaping the next generation of leaders.
Bill and Annamarie have supported WJA as Student Sponsors for over 10 years, and Michael has been a Student Sponsor for over 20 years. In recent years, Bill and Michael have joined forces as leaders of the Carpenters Group, one of WJA’s longest-standing groups of Student Sponsors. Supporting WJA students “creates a sense of family and a commitment to service,” says Bill. Instead of giving him birthday or holiday gifts, Bill has encouraged his adult children to donate to WJA and even to become members of the Carpenters Group themselves.
In addition to their many years of dedication as Student Sponsors, both Bill and Michael have chosen to support WJA through planned gifts. “Planned giving is not just for older people,” says Bill. “It is about planning for your future and your family’s future while finding ways to make a significant philanthropic impact. It is about building a legacy of giving back.”
“Many people do not realize there can be tremendous tax advantages to planned giving,” explains Bill, such as making a qualified charitable distribution from an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). “Even a small percentage of your IRA can have a huge impact.”
Bill has committed to giving to WJA through his IRA for two consecutive years. This method of planned giving will help him fulfill his annual IRA minimum distribution requirement and receive the tax benefits of making a qualified charitable distribution. Most importantly, it will allow him to provide substantial support for a mission he and his family believe in so strongly.
Giving through an IRA also allows Bill and Annamarie to see the immediate impact of their generosity. Their gifts will endow half of a student sponsorship, providing critical, accelerated support for WJA’s tuition-free model
as we continue increasing our enrollment. Furthermore, the Licameles’ planned giving investment honors their dedication as long-time Student Sponsors.
Michael also believes in the value of planning for the future and creating a legacy of charitable giving. “Planned giving allows me to provide lasting support for the causes that are most special to me and my family,” says Michael. “WJA is an important part of my life and was an important part of Linda’s life as well. When I was making my philanthropic plans for the future, WJA was the natural choice.”
Michael has named WJA as a beneficiary of his estate, committing a percentage of his IRA to support WJA in the long-term. His planned giving investment will also honor his dedication as a long-time Student Sponsor, and will ensure WJA can continue creating an outsized impact in our community by empowering future generations of “Men for Others.”
Thanks to generous planned gifts from Bill, Michael, and other members of WJA’s Magis Legacy Society, WJA is increasing our capacity to provide a high-quality education and a lifetime of meaningful support to our students for years to come. Reflecting on what it means to make a lasting difference, Bill and Michael both describe how WJA’s own alumni set a powerful example of giving back by sharing their time and talents to help others. They recognize the profound impact of our
alumni who have returned to WJA as teachers and staff, who support our current students as coaches, tutors, and mentors, and who donate generously to WJA. Bill and Michael believe that every member of the WJA community can help us build a legacy of giving back.

Making a Difference for Our Students and Our Community
“Children deserve the opportunity to reach their God-given potential,” says Monica Moore Thompson. To Monica, the Washington Jesuit Academy’s commitment to combining a high-quality education with holistic support makes a powerful difference in empowering students to succeed in the classroom and beyond.
Monica and her husband, John, have been integral members of the WJA community for over 15 years. Monica is currently serving in her fourth non-consecutive term as a member of WJA’s Board of Directors and John was the keynote speaker at our 2006 eighth grade graduation ceremony. The Thompsons generously support WJA’s mission, and were instrumental in recommending WJA for a gift from the Nike Foundation in honor of John’s late father, John Thompson, Jr.
One of the most fulfilling parts of the family’s involvement with WJA has been participating in the Student Sponsorship program. “Visiting the school and experiencing learning in action helps to make a connection with WJA in a very meaningful way,” says Monica. “Sponsoring a student creates an opportunity to see WJA’s impact on an even deeper and more personal level.”
Monica recalls witnessing her sponsored student’s growth during his time at WJA, and how his development underscored the positive effects of WJA’s comprehensive approach. Learning more about her student through his sponsor letters
and spending time with him at events such as WJA’s annual sponsor Thanksgiving luncheon allowed Monica to see this young man’s academic and personal success unfold. “Attending WJA’s eighth grade graduation ceremony and watching him graduate was a very special moment.”
The Thompsons are continuing their commitment to WJA’s mission by sponsoring a student in WJA’s Class of 2029. Describing what inspired her to sponsor another WJA student, Monica says, “It is important to know that I can make a small difference in education inequities and a tremendous difference for one student.”
Reflecting on the systemic challenges that contribute to educational and socioeconomic disparities in our community, Monica believes “the responsibility belongs to all of us” to help all children thrive. It is difficult for children to learn when they are experiencing hunger, witnessing violence in their neighborhoods, or facing the limitations of underresourced communities. From healthy meals to mental health counseling, Monica recognizes WJA’s ability to provide an array of wraparound support services under one roof, which has helped hundreds of families overcome challenges.
Monica’s experiences as a Student Sponsor and a Board Member have also shown her how a WJA education has an impact beyond the classroom. The Jesuit tradition
encourages character development and provides guiding principles for life, she explains. In addition to expanding educational opportunities for young men, Monica believes that WJA plays an important role in our community by teaching students how to be good citizens and “Men for Others.”
Since first serving on WJA’s Board of Directors in 2010, Monica has provided invaluable leadership and guidance over the years as we have worked to expand and enhance our school and our alumni support program. Thinking about WJA’s future, Monica looks forward to “introducing more people to the school and finding more ways to broadcast this good news.”
“Supporting WJA is one of the best philanthropic investments one can make,” says Monica. The Thompson family’s steadfast dedication to helping children maximize their potential exemplifies the spirit of WJA’s Student Sponsor program. Their support and generosity will continue to make a lasting difference in the lives of WJA’s students and alumni.

Sustaining Donors
These benefactors align their passions with the Academy’s priorities, generating an incredible impact across WJA. We acknowledge these individuals and families who support our mission through endowments.
Anonymous Scholarship Endowment
The donor is passionate about education and considered funding the start-up of a school to provide better educational opportunities for students. When he was introduced to the Washington Jesuit Academy, he realized that what he was dreaming of already existed with a successful track record. As a result, he and his family chose to endow a scholarship.
The AnBryce Scholarship
Bea and Tony Welters grew up in difficult circumstances and after having built a successful business, they made it their mission to extend a helping hand to others in need. They have established a summer camp, afterschool and Saturday leadership program, and extensive support programs at the college level. Their AnBryce Scholarship supports WJA students who have participated in their summer camp, after-school, or any of their foundation’s programs.
The Bernasek Family Scholarship
In celebration of the Washington Jesuit Academy’s past success and bright future in providing a valuesoriented education for students, Cathy and Brian Bernasek chose to endow a scholarship in 2015.
The Brodnik Scholarship
As longtime student sponsors at the Washington Jesuit Academy, Joan and Tim Brodnik chose to make their investment permanent by endowing a scholarship in 2007.
Claire Z. Carey, Ph.D. Faculty Endowment Fund
When the Washington Jesuit Academy was formed, the MBNA Foundation and its founder Charlie Cawley chose to establish an endowment fund for faculty salaries in honor of Claire Z. Carey, a former dean of Georgetown College at Georgetown University.
The Clark Charitable Foundation Endowment
At the direction of Courtney and Scott Pastrick, having witnessed first-hand WJA’s growth toward stability and sustainability, the Clark Charitable Foundation established the endowment to honor WJA’s countless benefactors and to inspire future confidence and investment in the mission of the Academy.
The German Orphan Home of the District of Columbia Endowment Fund
This fund was established to provide support for science, art, and music programs at the Washington Jesuit Academy.
Cecilia H. Gonzalez and Stephen M. Foster Scholarship Endowment Fund
Howrey LLP and Stephen Foster, both long-time student sponsors at WJA, established this endowment fund in memory of Stephen’s beloved wife and Howrey partner, Cecilia H. Gonzalez.
The Civitas Foundation Scholarship Fund

He is a graduate of Georgetown University, where he was a Baker Scholar, and thereafter received degrees from Stanford and Columbia. He is committed to providing scholarship aid to those with a keen desire to pursue their education. John is delighted to see WJA have as a cornerstone a commitment to the Jesuit ideal of cura personalis.
The Steven Smith College Reach Fund
Margaret and John Ford, longtime supporters of WJA, established this fund in memory of Margaret’s beloved brother, Steven. Through the fund, WJA alumni are eligible to receive funds that can help mitigate barriers to their admission to and/or persistence in college so that they can realize their ultimate success.
WJA Forward Endowed SCHOLARSHIPS honor the morals on which the Academy was founded and help ensure that there will always be seats available for deserving young men for today, tomorrow, and forever.
