LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear WJA Community, This past year, WJA celebrated two decades of educating the most deserving young men in Washington, DC. Our 20th Anniversary Gala was a celebration of this and allowed us to highlight our impact and the generosity of all those who have positioned us to better serve our students and alumni. Most importantly, the gala ushered in individuals and families who were previously unfamiliar with the Academy, but who were quickly energized by our organization’s tireless pursuit of transforming the lives of our students and inspired by the remarkable accomplishments of our alumni. We too, were inspired—by the generosity displayed on this evening for the Academy. ALUMNI COUNCIL The Washington Jesuit Academy Alumni Council was founded in 2019 and serves as a formal point of connection among our graduates and students. Members of the council are distinctly involved with WJA as they seek to give back to our community, encourage fellow graduates and current students to explore and bond over their experiences, and foster healthy, uplifting relationships among all who have walked our halls.

AUXILIARY BOARD The WJA Auxiliary Board is a group of young professionals who assist the Academy in accomplishing its mission by increasing public awareness of WJA and its goals, serving as a fundraising cohort for the school, and supporting the expansion of existing programs. 20TH ANNIVERSARY GALA On October 29, 2022, WJA celebrated two decades of transformative work on behalf of our students and alumni. In the beautiful National Cathedral, together with over 800 guests, we recounted “Today, Tomorrow, and Forever” to weave together the way in which our past set the foundation for the present, and the way in which decisions made today will evolve into our future. We were delighted to introduce WJA to over 40% of our guests who were previously unfamiliar with the Academy. The success of this evening is credited to our many benefactors who so generously bestowed their time, talent, and treasure. We are especially grateful for the contributions of Total Wine & Beverage (RAST Foundation—Robert, Anna, and Sophia Trone), Ridgewells (Susan Lacz), 5DࢼHUW\:HLVV 0HGLD 3DWULFN 5DHUW\ Daniel Sanders, and Reyes Holdings (Jennifer and Jimmy Reyes). KELSEY AND DAN GLADING Kelsey and Dan have been involved with WJA for several years, through their connection with WJA Founding President Bill Whitaker, mutual friends, as well as Dan’s early membership on WJA’s Auxiliary Board and current membership on WJA’s Board of Directors. When asked what inspired the couple to serve as co-chairs, Dan states, “WJA speaks for itself. Any time you spend time with WKH ER\V DQG VHH WKH JHQHURVLW\ RI WKH VWD DQG GRQRU EDVH LW LV KDUG WR WXUQ GRZQ DQ\ UHTXHVW WR GR PRUH ֦ $V FR FKDLUV IRU WKH JDOD .HOVH\ DQG 'DQ DLGHG ZLWK ORJLVWLFDO GHFLVLRQV DQG VWUDWHJL]HG ZLWK IHOORZ FR FKDLUV DQG :-$ VWD to determine how to best share our story with those new to the Academy. They emphasize that “the WJA community made the venue of over 800 individuals feel small, which is exactly what we were striving for.” Dan notes that WJA’s next chapter will be centered around the students, their trajectories, and the ways in which we will continue to amplify our message by sharing the impressive outcomes of our alumni.

LAURA AND BILLY KAPPAZ Laura and Billy experienced a truly “full circle” moment as co-chairs for the 20th $QQLYHUVDU\ *DOD DV WKH\ ZHUH UVW introduced to the Academy as guests at WJA’s 10th Anniversary Gala. Laura and Billy describe being instantly “hooked” to our mission and impact after hearing a graduate speak to his experience at WJA. They soon after had the opportunity to join a sponsor group, and have been sponsoring a student ever since. As they have been actively involved with WJA through their roles as sponsors, Laura and Billy note that “it was not a stretch to be involved in a larger way.” Billy details that he recognized the importance of a gala for raising funds and allowing DQ RUJDQL]DWLRQ WR IXOOO LWV PLVVLRQ +H DOVR XQGHUVWRRG WKDW this was an opportunity to introduce WJA to their friends. Similar to their co-chairs, Laura and Billy note their main responsibility was to coordinate the best way to ensure WJA communicated its impact to a wide spectrum of the Washington community. Laura characterizes the evening as a “joyous occasion” with awe-inspiring speakers who told the story of WJA on a personal level and reminded the audience that, “it’s so much more than a middle school.” As WJA enters its next 20 years, Laura and Billy look forward to expansion of the school, sustaining the viability of WJA’s IXQGLQJ DQG DGHTXDWHO\ VXSSRUWLQJ :-$֢V 2ௗFH RI 6WXGHQW DQG Alumni Success.
CATHYANN AND TRIPP SHREVES Cathyann and Tripp joined the WJA community over a decade ago while sponsoring a student as part of a sponsor group. They have since been involved with the Academy and felt the gala was another opportunity to extend their support, stating “We believe [WJA] is an incredibly important organization that will impact potential leaders of our community for future years.” As co-chairs, Cathyann and Tripp assisted with planning the evening as well as engaging with donors and guests. A DIFFERENT WAY TO GIVE Current sponsors Kathryn Alisbah and Brett Bossung became aware of WJA through both family and friends. After Kathryn’s sister, Nimi DuFour, a longtime WJA sponsor, encouraged Kathryn and Brett to sponsor a student as well, WKH\ YLVLWHG XV RQ 9DUQXP 6WUHHW .DWKU\Q QRWHV WKDW ZKLOH WKH\ ZHUH DOUHDG\ FRPPLWWHG WR VXSSRUWLQJ :-$ FRPLQJ WR FDPSXV IRU D &RHH &RQYHUVDWLRQ WUDQVIRUPHG WKH ZD\ WKH\ YLHZHG WKHLU LQYROYHPHQW )RU .DWKU\Q DQG %UHWW experiencing the students’ energy in person gave life to the impression they gathered from mutual connections. In just a year, Kathryn, Brett, and their daughter Lindsay have supported the Academy in profound ways. When asked what inspired their involvement, Kathryn states, “[WJA] is a place where you can commit time or money, and you know it’s making an immediate impact.” Kathryn and Brett certainly make an impact as sponsors. Brett warmly recalls attending WJA’s 2023 Sponsor Back to School Night and notes the unique experience of witnessing students interact with each other and their teachers in the classroom. Kathryn remarks on the special opportunity for sponsors to connect directly with their students over personal visits. When she visited her student for lunch, he excitedly brought his binder to show her what he was learning in class. They not only sponsor a current 5th grade student, but dedicated Brett’s most recent birthday celebration to serve as an HYHQW WR EHQHW :-$ %UHWW VKDUHV WKDW LQVWHDG RI KDYLQJ JXHVWV EULQJ JLIWV IRU KLP WKH\ ZHUH HQFRXUDJHG WR PDNH D JLIW to WJA. Their daughter Lindsay sponsors a 7th grade student and is the founder of the WJA Swim Club. Lindsay, a competitive VZLPPHU DQG VWXGHQW DW WKH +ROWRQ $UPV 6FKRRO LQ %HWKHVGD 0' ZDQWHG WR XVH KHU NQRZOHGJH DQG H[SHULHQFH WR help teach WJA students how to swim. WJA’s Nationals Spring Training Reception and similar events hosted on behalf of the Academy allow our community to share the impressive outcomes of our education model and ignite a passion and motivation for others to join in our transformative work. This engagement is critical to our growth as an organization. We are deeply appreciative not only for Art’s generosity, but his family’s as well. Terrance returns to Varnum Street after graduating from the Washington Jesuit Academy in 2015. He graduated from the Landon School in 2019 and recently completed a Bachelor of Social Work from Delaware State University, where he also played football. He looks forward to working with our Wellness Team and giving back to the WJA community.
Rachel joins WJA after completing a two-year Master of Education program through the Alliance for Catholic Education at the University of Notre Dame. Having attended The Catholic University of America to obtain her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Rachel is excited to return and give back to the DC community. She teaches 6th and 8th grade Science.
